Just wondering what's your take with Postini mail filtering services. I was expecting a huge difference but even with the filter sensativity at max threshhold *5*,, 15-30+ spam emails still seem to trickle in. The built in *junk filter* in Outlook always seems to catch the stuff that get's past by the Postini filters.
Just wondering for those using Postini, how do you feel about the accuracy of the spam filtering services.
My webhost says that I can enable "spam assassin" on my email account for free. But if I want "Postini", then I will have to pay extra. I need spam protection on my email account. But I don't want any false positives because I don't even bother scanning through my spam box.
How much better is Postini than spam assassin? I know Google is trying to buy Postini. So I figure it must be pretty good. But is it so much better than than free one?
I've got a domain name ("problemdomain.com") on my server (CentOS 4, WHM/cPanel) that has been set up with Postini for quite some time. All has been working & routing correctly. I recently changed to a new server with a new IP address. I transferred the account so that the DNS is setup identically on the new server. The only thing that changed is the main server IP, and the IP addresses that ns1.myserver.com and ns2.myserver.com resolve to. That propagation went through today and should be well set in.
Now, whenever you send an email to someone on this domain, it gets bounced back with the following:
This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification
Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:
mail@problemdomain.com
Technical details of permanent failure: PERM_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 13): 550-exprod8mx214.postini.com (psmtp.com) [64.18.3.114] is currently not 550-permitted to relay through this server. Perhaps you have not logged into 550-the pop/imap server in the last 30 minutes or do not have SMTP 550 Authentication turned on in your email client.
The way I have the DNS setup on the server for the MX records is as follows: problemdomain.com., 14400, IN MX, 100, laserskinsurgery.com.s8a1.psmtp.com. problemdomain.com., 14400, IN MX, 200, laserskinsurgery.com.s8a2.psmtp.com. problemdomain.com., 14400, IN MX, 300, laserskinsurgery.com.s8b1.psmtp.com. problemdomain.com., 14400, IN MX, 400, laserskinsurgery.com.s8b2.psmtp.com.
This DNS is exactly the way it was setup before when it was working. Any ideas what could be causing this?
we've been evaluating the Postini product for a short bit and was hoping this would be all that it's touted for.
So far, we're seeing it catch about 60% of spam but still some very obvious blatent ones are coming in.
Amazingly, we have done a forward as well to a gmail account, the gmails junk filters are pretty damm good...it catches the *rest* that Postini does not tag.
Just curious if anyone has has used other 3rd party spam services and your feedback/review
one of them, the master server ( we'll call server A ), runs a large web site with a lot of content and a mysql server.
I've setup another server ( we'll call server B ), that is completely in sync with server A, both mysql and all data using mysql replication and rsync for data.
also I've setup round robin dns, which is also working correctly.
Now, my question is:
if server A goes down, and server B picks up after it. how can i get those changes that were made on server B back in sync with server A when it comes back up. example, a use uploads files, or posts/edits/deletes data from mysql.
how should i handle this?
any ideas would be great, I'm sort on stuck on this one for the moment.
I found this forum from a friend at DP. I told her what was happening to me, and she suggested that I lay it all out here.
I wanted to try to make a site maybe 3-4 months ago, so I looked for a web host. I chose [url]
All was well until maybe 2 weeks ago. Every page that relied on a mysql database began loading very slowly. These are WP blogs. I waited a few days and contacted support @ Start Logic. They said it would have to go to level 2 tech support, but they would get an answer/ fix within 24 hours.
After 4 days, I had not heard from them. So I went to their online chat tech support for an answer. After 1.5 hours of waiting, I reached customer service. The lady began by telling me that I needed to mail them some screen shots of the problem. Then she put me on hold and came back with this auto response:
Harriet Anderson: I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you.
Harriet Anderson: Our Network Operations team is aware of the MySQL issues which is responsible for the slow running Web site. To find a fast alternative, we have already set-up a new team of Engineers who will only be monitoring the load on the MySQL servers.
Harriet Anderson: Upgrades could be the best alternative, but we are actually trying to find the reason behind the cause of the issue. You might have a question about why did it take so long to get this settled. The team had to search each server to trap the account which was using high amount of server resources. We have now found the cause of the issue and it was only because of few customers the load on our MySQL server was very high.
Harriet Anderson: These customers were utilizing very high amount of the server resources. Now that we have deactivated the scripts and accounts of these customers, you will not find irregular disturbance while accessing your Web site. To improve the performance, we will be adding more hardware which should actually help the current servers in boosting the server performance.
I told her that I needed someone with particular knowledge to contact me. I told her that my sites that use the databases are now worthless, and that it is not getting better. It is now taking 20 seconds to 4 minutes to load a page that is on a database.
For pages that aren't, they load in less than a second. That was maybe 3 days ago, and no one from start logic has contacted me.
My friend at DP is a computer guru. She says that StartLogic is full of *hit taking 2 weeks to find the cause of my msql being slow. I don't know one way or the other.
Please tell me: does something not seem right? I'm not happy at all, and I feel like I am being cheated. 2 weeks ago all was well. Now I'm screwed, and they are not responding with solutions. What do I do?
I'd appreciate if you can point out some links, or if anyone is willing to help me for a fee, we can talk about it.
I have a web application called MyApp
- Each MyApp user has 5gb hosting, and a web interface to manage their files.
- Therefore MyApp user gets a user account on linux machine and has access to only one directory /repo/usr/<user_id> and nowhere else. (suexec?)
- If that MyApp user creates a subdomain from any folder inside his home folder (he can do that using web interface), that folder is readable by www-data user not writable.
- That myapp user is able to mount/unmount his own ftp drives using curlftpfs.
- In short, users can only mess with their own files and they have no access nor rights to any other file that is outside of their home dir.
In short, this is a kind of hosting company server setup. Right now, we will have to manage all this from -only- one powerful server.
About one year ago, I decided to setup a wiki for a speech and debate club. Being a complete rookie, I fell for one of the fake review sites and chose start logic. After all... the ad said that the web hosting plans were mediwiki compatible.
With a lot of learning on my part, I managed to get mediawiki installed only to find out that light usage by just myself and my daughters would cause the website to stop working due to a "max number of querries exceeded" error. There was no way that this could be used for an entire club! Support from Start Logic was slow and basically limited to... "yup, that's the limit"... might I offer you a VPS?
My wife had already set up the club website using Start Logic, so I did not want to move her to new technology so qiuckly. So I purchased a separate VPS... but with known host, because I was not going to reward a Start Logic for what I felt was false advertising.
Support from Known Host has been fast and understanding, even as I'm learning and ask some ocassionaly clueless questions. In a year of usage, I have not had any downtime and performance has been great.
One year later, I have taught my wife to use a new web authoring package for the club web site... and canceling my Start Logic account.
How to translate non-chunked message to a chunked message using apache server side configuration?Idea is that apache must translate non-chunked request message coming from a client to a Transfer-Encoding: chunked message, before it reaches my apache C module. Here is the configuration i tried in httpd.conf, but of no success
In the WHM VPS optimized control panel - under Service Status, I see these
Disk /dev/hda3 (/backup) No DMA! (Click to Enable) Disk /dev/hda1 (/) No DMA! (Click to Enable) Should I? or shouldn't I "click to enable" - or is this something controlled by my host? what does this mean? regards, Mike Instinct-Software.com admin
I have placed .htaccess to block some ip, when the person ip matches, my server will gives this message "client denied by server configuration", got lots of them everday in my error log, how can I disable this message? I need other error log message but not this message, is there any way I can disable it?
My server has been running fine for months and then I got this message:
IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email.
The hostname (server.dealsreferals.com) resolves to . It should resolve to 69.46.27.111. Please be sure to correct /etc/hosts as well as the 'A' entry in zone file for the domain.
Some are all of these problems can be caused by /etc/resolv.conf being setup incorrectly. Please check this file if you believe everything else is correct.
You may be able to automaticly correct this problem by using the ' Add an A entry for your hostname ' under ' Dns Functions ' in your Web Host Manager
What is the problem? Maybe I should do what is suggested, however, why suddenly the problem?
My server is working fine. Should I just let this problem? What harm can happen?
I've only just finished setting up Apache, PHP and MySQL etc.
I went through the sitepoint pdf on how to set everything up - and i tested it by making a php page (showing the date) and saving it in the htdocs folder just like the instructions.
I go to view the page in firefox by going to [url] and i get this error message
Apache HTTP Server has encountered a problem and needs to close.
I have a dedicated server and I am using the SMTP of one of my domain names to send mail. The IP of this domain name ends in .25 and the server hostname IP ends in .24.
The emails that are received list the server hostname and IP in the message headers instead of the IP of the domain name that is sending the email. Is there something that can be done about this? I read that a message could be mistaken as spam if it doesn't originate from the exact IP of the domain in the 'from' field.
Trying to figure out the hardware configuration I'll need to host a message board and was wondering if those of you with experience could throw out some numbers in terms of # users, bandwidth used, and what hardware configuration you're on (single server, dual server, dual proc, RAM, disk, etc). Been tricky trying to guestimate so some numbers to compare would be a huge help.
I am opening this thread to complain about Yahoo mail issues with our ISP. Its been a month that we are having problems trying to send e-mail to Yahoo accounts.
First of all we are a Web Hosting company in Brazil and the IP that they blocked only host our main domain maxihost.com.br. We dont send bulk ou spam e-mails, we only send invoices and support replies to their accounts.
The logs from our mail servers when trying to e-mail them is below,
Code: LOG: MAIN cwd=/usr/local/cpanel/whostmgr/docroot 4 args: /usr/sbin/exim -v -M 1KHPUv-0007rp-0r delivering 1KHPUv-0007rp-0r Connecting to g.mx.mail.yahoo.com [209.191.88.239]:25 ... connected SMTP<< 421 Message from (189.1.169.32) temporarily deferred - 4.16.50. Please refer to [url] Note that I already filled out the form [url]telling them I am an ISP and I do not send any e-mail spam for their accounts, although every time I fill it I get an automatic/canned e-mail from their system with the following content,
Code: Hello Guillherme,
Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Mail.

What can you do to stop so many users on your server that use mysql as apart of their website from getting this message: MySQL server has gone away
Like there has to be something installed or configured on the server that causes this as well, as I know people are taking too long to load something and it through that message, but it has to be something you can do server wide to get reed of it?
I getting error from cpanel now about possible hard drive failure.First it was only secondary disk,so i send request to support to ask them why is that happening and they said it is just temperature warning, but they still checked disk.Testing took 3 hours, and support said everything is ok.
But now i start to receive again that message, and now not just secondary disk, also primary disk.So what should i do,should i just ignore that error considering now is summer and it's hot or contact support again?I am in that dilema beacuse if support will test disk that require offline testing and means server will be down again, and now even longer beacuse of both disk warning, and again if they realy fail then i will lost all data and experience much longer downtime.
We are getting following error while we view the awstats.
WARNING: LastLine parameter in history file is '20080518001148' so in future. May be you need to correct manually the line LastLine in some awstats*.domain.com .conf files.
is there anything to run on server to fix this issue globally as we are facing this for all domains on server.
Also in the awstats configuration file of the website(awstats.domain.com.conf). when we make the value WarningMessages = 0 then the error gets fixed.
But after running /scripts/runweblogs < username > the value of WarningMessages again come back to 1 WarningMessages=1
and we again see the above Warning message in the awstats webpage.
I have a client who could not send email to another domain, it didn't bounce just disappeared.
When I look in the exim_mainlog, the message in question wind up frozen after getting this error:
smtp transport process returned non-zero status 0x000e: terminated by signal 14

Dissapeared
It never warned the user as said it dissapeared, I have checked exim_mainlog and have found other cases to different domains that maybe the users have not reported but they were lost too.
I tried /scripts/eximup --force and that didn't fix it.
