Reliable, Best For The Money VPS?
Aug 14, 2008
I am wanting to spend around $60 - 70 a month on a VPS...
I am looking for a reliable source, and one that is on the cheaper side (but I know those two don't actually mix, so reliable more)
It doesn't have to be managed, but it can, so either way.
Any recommendations?
How much disk space/bandwidth should I be able to get with that amount of money?
I need it with control panel, and fantastico at the least.

before order,I ask poundhost's sale,
he said can provide 64 and 128 IPs,
so,I create a order at 2008-10-11,
10-15 server ready,
I ask them, but in this time,
they said only provide 10 IPs,max 16IP.
I used it for vpn applications,no have enough IPs,can't do it.
so poundhost said can cancel the server.
I never use this server, but poundhost still no refundment,
I send mail to them,no any responses,

Last week I asked my friend to pay gplhost.com for VPS server EUR25 through paypal. They said they require to authenticate me in order to set up my account. Since paypal account is not mine I was unable to pass this authentication. I said, it's OK just refund me my money. They refused to give me my EUR25 back saying they will report me to authorities for "credit card fraud"!
I understand that my behaviour MAY seem suspicious but isn't it my right to refuse give my personal information to anyone? And isn't it my right to receive refund if I don't want to disclose it?
Shall I advise my friend to initiate dispute with paypal about that? I won't give up until I get my money back.

A while ago I got an e-mail from Lunarpages saying my account was due for renewal. I contacted them well before the payment was due and asked for the account not to be renewed. I gave all the information I was asked for but then the support staff didnt reply.
Now I have an e-mail saying I have renewed my account and domaim. I quickly opened a support ticket asking for a refund, again giving all the details that I gave the first time. The ticket I opened was closed (why?!) and instead Lunarpages support replied in my original support ticket saying the charge ($100) is non-refundable.
Is there anything I can do, other than tell them if they dont give me my money back I will help in ruining their reputation?

I have now run into a very very unpleasant situation with ThePlanet.
I have ordered my 3rd server with them this month as a reseller. Before ordering I had a chat with their sales team and went through the purchase very carefully to make sure I had got the facts straight.
On their reseller programme, if you agree to a 6 months contract, you get your first month free. I asked the sales rep and verified that if I signup I will NOT be charged for the first month of service. So, instead of being charged 294 USD, I would be charged 25 USD just for the setup.
So, I went ahead and ordered. I even submitted a billing ticket requesting that this billing was applied and that 6 months contract would be applied.
Now it's exactly a week later and I can see my CC statement which says I have been charged 294 USD. These inconsiderate, and slack people at ThePlanet do NOT understand nor care about the damage this caused me.
And that billing ticket? It is unaswered, unresolved since its open date - 9th of May. 8 days now.
I'm absolutely furious. Do they think they can just take money like that? I am just sickened.
Do I file a chargeback? I spoke yet again to a live chat billing agent who was absolutely unhelpful.
I enjoy their network but now I am thinking about taking my 1000 USD per month business with them else where.

I’ve ordered a server from this company more than 4 days ago and paid for it straight away. they promised it to be setup in 24 hours but no reply since.
If I’m not getting a reply to this post in 24 hours I’m filing a chargeback. I’ve tried emailing them directly or through tickets

This may well turn into a free-for-all but...
If you're hosting a large, MySQL website and priority one (more important than price) is database stability and server uptime... who would you recommend as the best host for your money ?
I have free-hosting with Awardspace and their customer service and uptime are great, but their database crashed a couple of times in just a few months. Granted they always fixed it quickly. I've never used their paid packages.
And also I have quite a few sites pay-hosted with a Trini company that's re-selling from myhostcenter.com . They have fair customer service, but their databases have never (in four years) crashed on me... I've never lost data... and the price is very right! What I dis-like is the lack of advanced warning when sites are going to be down for server-maintenance. And there have been a couple times when the server would be down for no apparent reason at all, and with no apology.
Those issues haven't been huge problems before, because the sites are all relatively low-traffic, but it can be a disastrous for a future project I'm working on. Therefore, who would you recommend as both the most stable and most reliable host that money can buy ?

I had 2 annual accounts with joeusa.com for my website hosting (2 websites). I was a 3-year customer, somewhat disatisfied with tech support service but without time to change hosting servers. My email quit receiving on one website/account about 2 weeks ago. Joe told me they had changed out a hosting server & that was likely the issue. I continued to have no email with Joe being evasive & nonhelpful. Upon logging into the control panel, I noted I was blocked out. I finally got him to agree to check on it, & he stated that the host spam blockers were not activated, & there was too much spam. I had made no changes, so the spam blockers had to be deactivated when they changed servers with no notification to me.
Joe shut down both of my accounts refusing me a prorated refund. I had paid one on Sept. 6 through PayPal for 1 year & the other on Nov. 6 through PayPal, also for a year. I was told by PayPal that they do not cover services, so FYI on PayPal, buyer beware. Joe gave me 24 hours to take my websites down. He also wiped out all of my email that was on the server that I had not been able to receive for the last 2 weeks & I lost all of it with no access to it.
I have email proof of what transpired & only want a prorated refund, what is fair, because I have not received near the full year service purchased for both accounts. He has refused, and I am considering filing fraud charges. My email documentation shows how a simple tech support issue turned into his cheating me out of my money when he cancelled both services & refused any prorated refund.
I have no idea why he has acted so vindictively, including wiping all non-spam email off the server that I was never able to receive, but, based on some of his comments, I believe that he either did not like our Judeo-Christian website or that he had been reading some of my personal email with political comments in the recent election. He was not even aware of my 2nd account until I made him aware that there were two, but he was aware of the ministry website/account, where the email issues were. The other account had no issues, but he cancelled both. Also, the Judeo-Christian ministry website had been hacked on his server by someone alleging to be Islamic about a year ago.
I am not making this report in vengeance. I am only trying to keep the same thing from happening to other consumers. This is a low-bid hosting company, and, once again the old adage, "You get what you pay for," is proven true.

I signed up with service from infinitie.net after seeing an offer they had on this link [url]
This was on July 21st about 8PM EST. Link above states "PLEASE ALLOW UP TO 2 HOURS FOR YOUR NEW VPS ACCOUNT ACTIVATE ONCE ORDERED."
First reply took 8hrs, second 9hrs, third 5hrs, and to this date I haven't heard back from them since Jul 23, 2007 2:32 PM EST.
Incomplete login details were issued on Jul 23, 2007 2:32 PM EST. However, message stated "CPanel is finalizing its install and will be complete in 2 hours." I immediately asked them to please advise when setup is complete on Jul 23, 2007 2:56 PM EST. After not hearing anything back I decided to cancel and emailed request at Jul 24, 2007 2:54 PM EST.
I have a couple services I'm happy with elsewhere. I more or less just wanted to separate an account and see what other options were out there. I wasn't bothered by the fact setup was slow. The main issue was if they take this long to reply and handle simple issues prior to setup, what happens if I'm setup one day and there is a more serious issue? Since initial cancel request I attempted to contact them on several other occasions by both direct email and their ticket system. I never received a response other then the standard automatic "Thank you for writing to Infinitie's Support Team."
I have disputed transaction with paypal today. At a last attempt I emailed infinitie.net yesterday and told them unless refund was issued this is action I would be forced to take. No response so I proceeded. I will update and let you all know how this turns out.

On apr 10th, I ordered 1 month of 3dg's $20 vps plan..
I asked about paying through paypal, and they said that they would setup the account, and charge me 'later'
on somewhere around may 5th~7th, I turned off auto-renew through their control panel..
since then, I forgot about the vps, and went ahead with my life, etc.
but today.. I get in my email a $40 PayPal invoice, charging me for apr11~june11 ...
I turned off auto renew before may10, which was the expire date for the plan.. but it now appears it has not been canceled.
I have never used their service after may 10... and I never enabled auto renew, but set it to disabled ...
now, they are charging me $40, which is complete.. BS.
they have renewed my account against my will, and they want me to pay for it.. and they are threatening me to take 'legal action'. should I decide not to pay $40...
don't trust 3dghosting.. they will renew your account w/o your consent, and charge you. if you don't give into their demands, they will contact debt collection agency, and contact credit bureaus..
don't trust 3dghosting.. they are ignorant people. I can pretty much imagine the big "WE CHARGE CUSTOMERS AT OUR WILL, AND WE MAKE THEM PAY NO MATTER WHAT" image as their background display for their computers...

Before i start i would just like to mention i had this problem about 8-10 months ago but fought this would be useful to share.
I bought the hostgator swamp shared hosting package for a website me and my friend were going to make.
Long story short my friend didnt have to much time in his hands so pulled out so a was left with hosting that i didnt need, so about 30-35 days in i cancelled the account, Hostgator claim that if you cancel your account with them no more than 45 days being with them the will issue a full refund.
I waited the full 3-5 business days they say it takes to issue the refund, I never recieved that refund, i gave them another week still no sign of the money.
After numerous chats with live operaters and opening tickets, i still hadn't got anywhere, live operaters where giving me coupons to make up for the refund ( but thats still not good enough ) and the operaters answering the tickets were saying they had issued the refund.
I just decided to forget about it.
The service was good though in that period of time they, such as changed my main domain name for me for free because i was a new customer.
So what do you think about this ?

if our host is experiencing technical problems, or if they're in financial collapse.
Since 5 PM Sat., many sites hosted by powerfulhosting.com of Santa Monica have gone dead, mostly on NS01.POWERFULHOSTING.COM and some on NS1.IOCUS.COM They include:
chandarawestla.com
peggypotter.com
countrysidepet.com
robertpaulgalleries.com
cameraleather.com
goeastern.com
roastyourown.com
and many more. Over the weekend, tech help claimed the problems were assocaited with an "upgrade" to a new server. As the site owners started talking to each other, and the outage grew into the work week, Powerful Hosting stopped responding to inquiries, even from longtime clients. Their phone mailboxes are full and silent.
Now, I'm not an administrator or even a very quick FTPer, but these stores have burned to the ground and there are are livelihoods on the line. Can anyone in this community find any evidence suggesting a geniune technical glitch on their servers? A couple of people in our group think maybe they can't pay a server bill, in which case we all need to bail out immediately.

I'm looking for the most reliable VPS/network I can get my hands on. I'm willing to pay a premium for 99.999 - 100% uptime. I don't want 99.5, that translates into two or three very painful outages a year.
I don't need a managed system, or any control panel. Debian etch is preferred.
Anyone else out there shopping primarily for reliability?

Just read about some deal they're having where they're selling you a domain and 2 years of unlimited bandwidth hosting for 24 dollars or so. Is this legit?
Is quality sacrificed for this kind of pricing?
I'm currently with downtownhost and they are amazing by the way but if it's that cheap, I might be forced to switch.

I was wondering what some reliable web hosts would be for hosting a website that would provide enough bandwidth to allow downloads of text files and also a forum. I just want something to get started with. However, I want something that is easily upgradeable. TO be honest I just really need the name of a few reliable companies that aren't scams or anything.

I've been using a Ubiquity VPS for a bit over a year now, and have been generally satisfied, for two reasons:
1) The performance has been excellent. It's still pretty fast considering how much we're using it, and I was able to record just over 200 days uptime.
2) The support seems to be competent and no-BS. Nothing ticks me off more than being lied to, or being told that something that is clearly beyond my control is my fault. While there have been various teething problems (I signed up just before they did a big infrastructure upgrade, and then the whole "someone pulled the plug on the entire company thing".
We're now looking to procure some additional virtual boxes. Not out of any slight to them (primarily to do with SEO, but also a matter of eggs and baskets), we'd like to get them from different firms.
I can generally handle the technical stuff running on the VPS myself, so in terms of ongoing support (once the basic "provision everything, get forward and reverse DNS for the server's IP set up" is done), all I really need is a company that will keep the lights on, the machine plugged into the network, and replace hardware when it fails promptly-- in short, self-managed VPS.
Each one would likely host only a single site, but the sites are apt to be fairly database-intensive. Linux-based.
So what I was thinking, to start with, would be:
* 512M memory
* 20G disc
* 500G transfer
or higher. I'd honestly prefer a bit more memory (the current VPS, hosting probably 75 domains of minor traffic, is a 1Gb setup, and will occasionally breach the red line; I've kept it reined in to 20 simultaneous Apache processes to keep memory use low).
I shopped around a bit, and was able to find a variety of providers offering packages of this size (and frequently larger-- 768M/40G/600G seemed a common size) at about $50-60 per montt.
I'm leaning towards a VPS primarily because of the assumption that the low end fully-dedicated boxes are relatively poor spec-- low permanent capacity (compared to the burst capacity I could get on a decent VPS), and most importantly, no redundant drive subsystem. Data loss is my big fear. That, and really weak performance.
But of course, nobody is going to tell you "Your VPS is on a Duron 750 shared equally between 32 VPSes", "We have RAID. When there's a roach in the lunch room, we spray it." or "We really suck at support and end up taking it out on our customers."
So who can be trusted in those departments?
I'd prefer someone with no-gimmick pricing, because we're researching today but may not provision immediately.

I have been doing some research to try and figure out the best host for my ASP.Net website. DiscountASP.Net seems like a very good option. However, I have read about some serious downtime they had due to two DDOS attacks they had. Apparently this brought down all hosted sites for days.
Other than this, DA.Net seems quite reliable. My questions are:
1. Are the DDOS attacks on DA.Net something I should be worried about? They claim to have improved their security, but I wonder why they were brought to their knees twice?
2. How come only DA.Net was attacked on such a large scale twice? Is it a sign that hackers are targeting it?
3. How good is the infrastructure that DA.Net has?

We currently have our sites hosted with 1&1 but after a nightmare of intermittent downtime, poor service and complex setup requirements for basic ASP .NET sites we have given up!
We want to leave the domain registrations with 1&1 as they do that side of things well and I don’t want the issues of moving domains to another provider.
But what we need is a fast reliable host that will allow us to leave our domains with 1&1 and will host our websites, their subdomains (and hopefully emails if possible) with the domains still registered at 1&1.
Also the things we need to resolve from 1&1 are:
1 - using asp or aspx custom error404 pages for all webpages, we can do this for aspx sites though our web.config but all other extensions go to a single .html page (not very dynamic)
2 - different error 404 pages per domain
3 - ability to do extension-less url rewriting in ASPX - we could not do this with 1&1 due to the inability to change IIS settings for the application to forward all requests to the asp .net application
4 - different IIS applications for each domain without requiring a folder in the url, 1&1 require us to move the domains into folders for this to work but moving our domain to a sub folder therefore loosing links to pages in google etc
5 - great technical service and attention to problems
Also all of our customers are in the UK, is there any latency or issues with slow loading using say a US based host?

Just wanted to put a little warning out there for people thinking about ReliableSite.net for hosting. I am a web host and designer/developer and I was looking for Windows hosting for one of my clients (I only do Linux) to host a shopping cart called ProductCart on and after searching in here I found ReliableSite.net. I researched them, they seemed to have a good rep, their prices were great and they said they had ASPImage and ASPUpload installed (which we needed specificlly for ProductCart, I was even offered the most current invoice or something to prove they had it). I talked with the sales guy (Radic) a few times before I had my client order services and a few time after.
Once we started having some problems with things not working correclty it was VERY hard to get ahold of Radic and support tickets were taking longer and longer to be answered.
I really don't remember to many of the eariler problems, they were not a big deal, but we hit a major road block when the feature in ProductCart wouldn't work (the image upload and resize feature that is dependent on ASPImage and ASPUpload being installed).
I finally determined that it was becuase the ASPImage and ASPUpload were not liscened correctly (even though they stated it was before we purchased services). I emailed support they took their time getting back to me, then told me it was setup correctly and it must be something with the program we were using.
After contacting support for ProductCart I found a little tester script they provide to test for what version of ASPImage and ASPUpload are installed. That failed and gave an error number. I forwarded this onto support, they responded and said they would look in to it. I was then told that they had found the problem and it was a billing or provision issue. A few days later I still have not gotten an update nor are the componets working.
I am emailing and emailing them and they are ignoring me. I finally get a response and they say they are working on an emergency server restore and everyone is busy with that, we will have to wait, they say they will have it fixed by the next day at 7pm EST. I wait until after that time period, see nothing has happened, I email them a few hours later I get a response that says they still have hundreds of clients down and cannot do it.
By this time it has been close to a week and no action has been taken. We decided to move everything to yet another host (this will be our 3rd) and we never did get an update about when it was fixed, if ever. I then had to email them one last time to ask for the SSL Cert to be exported, took them 10 days to get that to me and by then I had reissued it.
