if our host is experiencing technical problems, or if they're in financial collapse.
Since 5 PM Sat., many sites hosted by powerfulhosting.com of Santa Monica have gone dead, mostly on NS01.POWERFULHOSTING.COM and some on NS1.IOCUS.COM They include:
and many more. Over the weekend, tech help claimed the problems were assocaited with an "upgrade" to a new server. As the site owners started talking to each other, and the outage grew into the work week, Powerful Hosting stopped responding to inquiries, even from longtime clients. Their phone mailboxes are full and silent.
Now, I'm not an administrator or even a very quick FTPer, but these stores have burned to the ground and there are are livelihoods on the line. Can anyone in this community find any evidence suggesting a geniune technical glitch on their servers? A couple of people in our group think maybe they can't pay a server bill, in which case we all need to bail out immediately.
So I finally decided to upgrade apache from 1.3 to 2.2 and thought I'd upgrade php while I'm doing it. Everything isntalls ok and the php installer says it has configured apache etc but I just can't get it to parse php. It just loads a blank page!
I have a client trying to log in via ftp. They cannot log in and get this error.
[14:36:05] Resolving host name "www.domain.com" [14:36:05] Connecting to "IP ex 1.1.1.1" Port: 21 [14:36:06] No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. [14:36:06] Cannot login waiting to retry (30s)... [14:36:06] Client closed the connection.
I restarted FTP and checked to see if apf was blocking them and neither worked. She is using smartftp and I also had her try filezilla and neither worked.
However I am able to log in fine from my pc using this login info.
This is returning all kinds of IP address results such as: 58.216.50.2 Can you suggest how I can tweak the grep command to search for the right IP addresses?
I want to scan precisely for IP addresses starting 216.2*.
We've been given the following information about spam, and want to track the source of it down:
216.2x.x.x - email spam
So any ideas how I can scan these logfiles more precisely for the IP address I need?
I was wondering, if installing ffmpeg-php is worth the trouble for shared hosting accounts or if it is too much of a resource hog. I had a couple of requests for that but I am not used to this extension.
We are in the process of changing web hosting companies and I am having difficulty in moving all the directories. We are a membership based company with over 8,900 members. The original web site (called Site a) has over 26,700 individual directories along with many tutorials in video format. The entire site is approximately 80 GB in size.
When I had the second web hosting company try to move the site via tar they indicated that the tar would abort at about 4 GB every time.
Is there any other way to move this site or get a complete backup of the site. I have no problem moving the MySQL databases.
I managed to install xcache on my Centos 4.5 server.
Xcache is shown in my phpinfo, but I think there's problem since php -v gives me following error, I don't have a clue how to fix this. See attached images. I tried several different configurations in xcache.ini, but all with this same result.
It seems that this error doens't occur always.

I am having trouble setting up webdav on IIS6. I wasted all day on this today.
So far I have set it up to work over the internet with anonymous access.
Now I want to turn on:
1) basic authentication
2) SSL
I try to turn on (1) but:
- when try to access over the internet, it prompts for my login but it doesn't accept the login and keeps reprompting me.
- when I try to access from the local server, it seems to accept the login but gives an error 'the folder you entered does not appear to be valid, please choose another'
I have created a new user who has permission to access both the directory on the server and the virtual directory in IIS. I have turned on the webdav extension. I have tried reinstalling IIS too.
I'm trying another cpanel hosting service in addition to one with which I have a main domain and a bunch of addons. I'm used to being able to create the addon accounts regardless of whether I've already changed the ns for the domains being added yet. In the new service I'm trying, I am unable to to do that, but instead get an error message which appears online in various forum posts:
Quote:
Error from park wrapper: Using nameservers with the following IPs: exampleIP 1,example IP 2 Sorry, the domain is already pointed to an IP address that does not appear to use DNS servers associated with this server. Please transfer the domain to this servers nameservers or have your administrator add one of its nameservers to /etc/ips.remotedns and make the proper A entries on that remote nameserver.
With the hosting service where I can always create the accounts any time, I use a secure login that contains my account ip: [url] I will only do secure logins, and not any unsecure http logins. The other hosting service where I am unable to create the addons does not appear to have that available for my normal account url or ip, at least it doesn't work when I've tried, but after searching I found out that you can get a secure login in another way, so I am able to securely log into my account using [url] but this is not the same as my account's IP or the normal shorter url for my regular unsecure login. I would guess that's the significant difference which allows me to create accounts any time in the first account vs. not at all in the second - that I'm using my account's normal ip for the one, but the longer-than-normal secure urls for the other (?), although I don't fully know how that would work.
There is however, one significant difference in the second account which I do not have in the first, and that is that I have SSH access in the second account. So, I am wondering if there is a simple method for using that SSH access to change a setting in my second account in such a way that I can have the same freedom to create addons there first and then attend to ns changes and so forth later when I'm ready? Especially is there a way to do this only once for the whole account, instead of having to do it for each and every addon? Thanks in advance to those who might really know the score on all this stuff and exactly what the best solution or solutions are.
i am tring to setup my own nameservers for the past two days but couldn't get them to work.
i hve already created the ns at godaddy.com. and created dns zone file with corress ponding ips in my vps
iam getting the following error on the dns report. can anyone help me fix them......thanks aloot

A while ago I got an e-mail from Lunarpages saying my account was due for renewal. I contacted them well before the payment was due and asked for the account not to be renewed. I gave all the information I was asked for but then the support staff didnt reply.
Now I have an e-mail saying I have renewed my account and domaim. I quickly opened a support ticket asking for a refund, again giving all the details that I gave the first time. The ticket I opened was closed (why?!) and instead Lunarpages support replied in my original support ticket saying the charge ($100) is non-refundable.
Is there anything I can do, other than tell them if they dont give me my money back I will help in ruining their reputation?
If you're hosting a large, MySQL website and priority one (more important than price) is database stability and server uptime... who would you recommend as the best host for your money ?
I have free-hosting with Awardspace and their customer service and uptime are great, but their database crashed a couple of times in just a few months. Granted they always fixed it quickly. I've never used their paid packages.
And also I have quite a few sites pay-hosted with a Trini company that's re-selling from myhostcenter.com . They have fair customer service, but their databases have never (in four years) crashed on me... I've never lost data... and the price is very right! What I dis-like is the lack of advanced warning when sites are going to be down for server-maintenance. And there have been a couple times when the server would be down for no apparent reason at all, and with no apology.
Those issues haven't been huge problems before, because the sites are all relatively low-traffic, but it can be a disastrous for a future project I'm working on. Therefore, who would you recommend as both the most stable and most reliable host that money can buy ?
We would just like to take a minute to say how impressed and satisfied we are with one of our primary colo providers, G3 Technologies [url]. Brendan at G3 is a absolute pleasure to deal with. The facility is secure, well maintained and the BGP network Brendan has created is powerful and reliable.
I wouldn't trust anyone but Brendan and G3 when you need premium colocation.
Mods, you can PM us for proof that we use G3 or you can just trace hostvault.net ;-).
before order,I ask poundhost's sale, he said can provide 64 and 128 IPs, so,I create a order at 2008-10-11, 10-15 server ready, I ask them, but in this time, they said only provide 10 IPs,max 16IP. I used it for vpn applications,no have enough IPs,can't do it. so poundhost said can cancel the server. I never use this server, but poundhost still no refundment, I send mail to them,no any responses, ......

I can remember not so long ago, Layered Tech and Soft Layer were pitched as being pretty much equal in pricing. When it comes to high-end VPS nodes, I've seen it so far to be more feesable to lease them, maybe on RTO, rather than buy hardware and rack it up so when I came to request a quote from the two providers, it seems to be that Layered Tech charge some what $800 more for the same configuration as Soft Layer. Who is actually worth the money in your opinion?
The quote:
Quote:
Dual Processor Quad Core Xeon 5335 2.00GHz (Clovertown) - 2 x 8MB cache 2 x 1.00TB SATA II 24 GB FB-DIMM Registered 533/667 100 Mbps Public & Private Ports Public Bandwidth 2000 GB Bandwidth Monitoring Host Ping Notification Email and Ticket Response Automated Notification Operating System CentOS 5 (64 bit) Primary IP Addresses: 1 IP Address Secondary IP Addresses: 4 IP Addresses Lockbox 1 GB Network IDS/IPS Protection Unlimited SSL VPN Users & 1 PPTP VPN User per account Nessus Vulnerability Assessment & Reporting Quantity: 1 Discounted Total: $599/month, $0 setup
For exactly the same quote, Layered Tech wanted $1,400 per month. Although I have no plans to go with either right now, who is actually worth the money?
i know that one or more of the people who work for hostecon post here
i just want to say i am very upset right now
hostecon was a decent host - but i decided to end my offshore site
i had prepaid for another 4 months before i told them i was cancelling my account and wanted my prepaid money back
they told me they would cancel my account on the 1st of april and give me my money back
it is now april 2nd, hostecon.com seems to have vanished, and i have not received any money from them.
if you work for hostecon or know how i can contact them then help me get this sorted right away. hostecon support has always been great, but i just dont need their services anymore and want my prepaid money back.
I didn't even know about this company until I saw one of their PDU in somebody's cabinet in the datacenter.
They don't list any prices or vendors, I emailed them waiting for reply.
One thing that caught my eye was the number of additional outlets per strip. We never daisy chain out PDUs so even though we have the power to put more servers per circuit we never could. It has at least 3-4 more outlets than Raritan PX and APC, which means we can put 3-4 more servers per circuit.
How are their products? The look pretty robust from what I saw in the cabinet.
I've found an interesting offer from this provider. After doing some research I found one topic which didn't really describe the quality of their service.
Last week I asked my friend to pay gplhost.com for VPS server EUR25 through paypal. They said they require to authenticate me in order to set up my account. Since paypal account is not mine I was unable to pass this authentication. I said, it's OK just refund me my money. They refused to give me my EUR25 back saying they will report me to authorities for "credit card fraud"!
I understand that my behaviour MAY seem suspicious but isn't it my right to refuse give my personal information to anyone? And isn't it my right to receive refund if I don't want to disclose it?
Shall I advise my friend to initiate dispute with paypal about that? I won't give up until I get my money back.
For people looking for a vps, I thought it's important to get a feel for their technical support team. So for the first time, I've had to use it. . .
My problem is that MySQL CPU utilization is around 25% at all times and it is lagging the box like crazy. All of my sites hosted only get around 200k uniques per month. <<snipped>> The lag seemed to start around the same time I added multiple cronjobs at various times and frequencies to grab RSS feed data and check to see if it should add a new entry into the DB.
I am not a linux guru, so I opened a ticket and asked for help and suggestions on what to do. . .
Response:
Quote:
I could try tweaking the mysql configuration so the service uses less resources, but this usually just helps with the memory use.
I was looking for him to either say yes the cronjobs are doing it or I have poorly coded queries. . something useful and related to CPU usage. But no.
So then I say sure, tweak. I ask if he agrees that the cronjobs are the problem and what options I have to remedy the situation.
Response:
I have tweaked the mysql configuration for you. Yes, most likely those cronjobs are causing the big CPU usage in mysql.
Basically he completely ignored my question on what other options I have or recommendations on what to do next. Needless to say I am furious. I ask for advice and get absolutely nothing useful in return. Not to mention his short answers make it seem like I'm lucky he even reads my entire question.
