1and1 Hosting Advice Needed

Jan 16, 2009

I'd like to go with 1and1, using ASP.net and MS SQL Server, and the ability to setup lots of databases, websites and URLs, but I'm not keen on maintaining the server, updates, backups etc.
I'd also like to access the web space and upload files, from any computer.

1and1 Hosting Advice Needed For Newbie

Jan 22, 2009

I'm looking to host my own website(s), money isnt really an issue, but I'd like some advice on which package would be most suitable. I can't upgrade to different platforms, so I need to get the right package from the start.

I like the sound of the dedicated server, but my experience of supporting servers isn't great, so I'm wary of getting this option.

The VPS looks good, could anyone please tell me how this works? What the difference between thi sand a dedicated server? Do you need alot of server support experience to use this?

Would the normal MS hosting package be suitable? I take it its not very flexible.

Leaving Rackspace, Advice For Layman Needed

Sep 4, 2008

After 7 years with Rackspace I have decided to leave for better and cheaper service elsewhere. The final straw (after a couple of years of tolerating increasing prices and decreasing support) was a ridiculous quote from them for adding 1Gb of RAM.

I have read in the Forums about people having similar feelings, and there is advice here about where to go to instead. But I am a *total layman*, needing as many support services as possible (rebooting, backing up, etc.) so that I don't have to worry about anything really. So a lot of the advice here is over my head! Can anyone suggest where I should take my business?

Moving From 1and1, Need Some Advice

Aug 17, 2008

Hey everyone, I've been a loyal customer of 1and1 for a few years now, however some circumstances have come up that require me to upgrade to something with unmetered bandwidth with some better hardware specs, simmilar in the fashion that 1and1 in Europe does (dedicated 100mbit for 2TB or so, then downgraded to 10mbit that can be reset to 100mbit manually for no extra cost). So I was looking at 1and1.co.uk's Buisiness III server ( order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/ServerRoot ), and I figured i could cut some corners here and there to snag me an account even though I'm in the US, but I realized that their price plus VAC makes them a bit less competitive in terms of price. I was wondering if anyone would know of some place that can offer the freedoms 1and1 offers (basically, "here's your server, here's our ToS, have a blast"), with simmilar and/or better specs as that specific package, and possibly deals internationally?

I've given the foums a good once-over (I've lurked for several years now), and have gotten a general idea, but I figured I'd ask just to get a better idea.

SoftLayer Major Packet Loss Issues -- Advice Needed

Mar 8, 2008

I recently switched over to SoftLayer for dedicated hosting and the servers are great. However we've been getting hit on and off with massive (50-80%) packet loss, which has been crippling our performance and causing all sorts of problems

I put in a support ticket and they linked me to the Internet Health Report website and said it was due to one of their bandwidth providers (I think Global CrossinG) and not on their internal network and to be patient as it could take time to resolve

Are any other SoftLayer customers going through this? Is this an unusual occurrence? I feel like if it was really one of their partners that it would be affecting a lot of their customers and it would be a high priority issue right?

I'm kind of stuck on what to do; I just invested a lot of energy into moving content onto these new servers and am concerned about whether to wait it out or whether to start finding a new company. This kind of packet loss is really unacceptable...

Hosting Needed For Investment Affiliate Sites

Apr 5, 2008

I say relative, because I have built several websites in the past, going back to 1998 or so, but have never really pursued it heavily, and only recently have decided to get into the game on a more proactive scale.

In searching for a web host, I run across common TOS which seems on the surface to exclude what I want to do, which among other niches I've got in mind, include investing (gold, real estate, forex, commodities, etc.).

Maybe some of the hosting vendors here can help me with clarification. I do not want to host an investment platform, like a stock or forex trading platform. I just want to publish info sites with affiliate links to the investment products I deem worthy.

Any problem with that? If so, does anyone know of good hosting for such sites?

I've perused many hosting forums lately and find this one to be among the top of the top! Good job WHT owners!

Dedicated Hosting: MediaTemple, 1and1, Or Someone Else?

Mar 26, 2008

I run a development/consulting business that hosts several sites that are all over the map traffic wise (anywhere from 30 visitors a day to thousands).

I have been getting by with MediaTemple's Grid-Service and have been overall pleased with them, but it's clear it's time to upgrade to a more dedicated solution. Specific pain points include:
MySQL memory limits reached with exporting thousands or records through a web app
Inability to install the latest bug-tracking apps like Trac because of old versions of Python or MySQL
Inability to have SSL on multiple sites under one account.

Even with multiple sites, we have not touched any limits traffic or storage wise, just with memory using MySQL. A key selling point for using the Grid was its theoretical ability to scale for traffic spikes, and we have not had problems because of high traffic.

Key requirements we're placing a premium on in a managed-dedicated solution:
Ability to have up-to-date versions of PHP, Python, or MySQL or be able to install them ourselves, but not necessarily to be on our own in terms of having to do all updates ourselves.
I don't want to be restarting Apache every 15 minutes, or every day, or ever, really . My only trepidation with going with a dedicated solution is the sense that we'd be on our own more when it comes to traffic spikes or an app not behaving quite as it should. Is this an unwarranted fear?
More flexibility for our memory issues.
Backup included.

Having been a long-time MediaTemple customer, I've looked at their Dedicated Virtual server, but am somewhat concerned at the lack of backup support. We are also looking at 1and1 closely.

Does anyone have comparative perspective on MT and 1and1, or any other large host we should be looking at?

1and1 Dedicated Server Review And Some Shared Hosting Ramblings (couldn't Resist)

Oct 23, 2009

http://1and1.com

I've had a couple dedicated servers with 1and1 for a while now(about 6mos). I have to say that my overall experience was pretty good. At the time the prices where pretty good, and are very comparable to most hosts. I received the speeds promised, the server was setup very quickly.

The only negative I had with the server was the kernel. I attempted to install vmware on they system however they did not have the headers needed by GCC to compile vmware. It was an annoyance, but I just opted to update the kernel since there where a few releases since their custom built kernel was made. Once I was running the new kernel the vmware process went smoothly, and everything worked perfectly.

As for 1and1's support team, I have to say their standard support I would not rate a 10/10, however their dedicated server support team, and one particular rep I've come to know in their sales / abuse department (more on the abuse dpt. later) are very knowledgeable. And always addressed any issues or questions promptly. Which honestly no issues besides vmware stand out in my mind, which was just a minor inconvenience, which you would find on most hosts. Since its an un-managed root server your responsible for keeping the system up to date, and run the latest kernels anyway right?

Ok, so I mentioned I came to know a rep out of the abuse department of sales. Now this isn't particularly related to my dedicated servers but I did have one of their hosting packages. Well I never kept tabs on the site and the scripts had a couple vulnerabilities, php5 wasn't enforced.

Anyway to make a long story short, the site was hacked and fake bank sites and other scripts where loaded onto the server. Which is where The abuse department came into play. Now I know (getting off topic, but it may be the same with a dedicated server) hosting companies don't want to run sites like these, and I thought that the way these companies usualy handle these types of situations are to send a take-down notice to their client, as its possible they may not even know its there. But 1and1 opted to completely disable all access to the server, http, ftp, ssh, everything. So at first I didn't know what happend. I call up tech support that night(prob around midnight -- 24/7 tech support is always great), they let me know the account was dissabled do to an abused related complaint. They told me I would have to wait until morning when their sales department opens(as abuse is located in sales).

So I call up the number they gave me the next morning. And meet Bob (I'm calling him bob because his name escapes me at the moment). He was very pleasant and understanding that I needed my site up as soon as possible. He looked at my account he saw I had been with them for about a year and a half, and said he didn't think I had posted any of the content anyway(he disabled it himself imagine that haha). He emailed me links to all the files in question, informed me that php5 was not forced and recomed I fix it. Since that was the only reason we had this isue in the first place. He was also able to tell me what files the hacker used to exploit and gain access to the server, as well as searched the the user directory for any backdoor scripts. Which he did find some and sent me the locations in the email.

So, finally we got of the phone he re-enabled the server. I went through the email went through everything, I just opted to delete everything as i felt the whole system was compromised anyway, and re-upload the site. I forced php5 for all php scripts and never heard anything about it again... and the site still runs today!

Their normal tech support isn't all the great, at least not when it comes to apache. I inquired about mod_rewrite not working and the first rep i spoke to didn't know what i was talking about, I explained in more detail, she put me on hold for about 10-20mins and researched it. Said she found details about my issue and shot me an email. I checked the email, it contained how to moddify headers using MS ASP which has nothing to even do with my "LINUX" shared hosting plan.

I called in a second time frustrated, remember I usually talk to guys from their dedicated server support. When I spoke with the second rep. The first thing I asked Him was if he was familiar with "Apache Mod_Rewrite" (exact words) are you familiar with this, and if not can you please give me to someone that is. He assured me he knew what I was talking about, I explained the situation, and what the other rep sent me was completely off topic. He apologized and assured me he knows exactly what I'm talking about.

He sent me an email with another link to their FAQ yet again. However this time is was on creating 403 redirects in apache. Well I do admit at least they got closer this time right? I laughed and walked out of the room. Took a shower and relaxed. Finally, I decided I'd take one last look at .htaccess configs before trying another call. I played around with different setting and... eureka! I found the solution; for some reason mod rewrite on 1and1's shared hosting servers doesn't support sub-directories; that is you need to access the files in your root directory to successfully process a rewrite.

So whats the moral of the story? Call Dedicated Server Support! lol

So anyway since this is a dedicated server review. So for my Dedicated server experience I would rate it a "9 out of 10".

For my overall experience with 1and1, I would rate it an "8 out of 10". Not the best I ever had, but I would do business with them. There are other minor issues I've had with their shared hosting, but I don't feel like getting into them.

Anyway hope that helps sombody, I kno it was a long post... so for the people that read it all congrats, because I lost concentration over about 80% of that post lol

Little humor there.. anyway thanks for read'n the post... just my little contribution to WHT.

DDoS Attack Advice

Aug 31, 2009

I have been in online business for about 5 years, but only this morning found out what DDoS is. Shame on me.

Our site was attacked this morning and the host (shared hosting) has switched off the dns connection so our site is currently down along with email. We are a small firm and we are absolutely getting killed by this right now.

The tech support in this hosting company (icdsoft com) is absolutely phenomenal based on previous experiences and here is what they said throughout the day:

"Your site gets approximately 60 hits/second. Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done in such situation. We already blocked the most active IP addresses in our firewall, but this does not help, as the attack comes from many sources "

About an hour later they tried again and the following was said:

"Unfortunately we do not know how long this attack will last. At the moment there are more than 1100 requests/second towards your site."

about an hour after that the following was said:

"The attack is still going on. Currently, the incoming rate is 8MBit/sec. We will enable your site, and we will notify you when the attack is over."

My questions are the following and I will appreciate any advise as I am absolutely clueless about this:

1. What should I do at this point? Should I move the site to a dedicated server and if so, will this solve the DDOS problem?

2. Should I purchase anti DDoS package? They are extremely expensive it appears.

3. If I move to a new dedicated host, which one should i choose? we are a small site, with about 10,000 uniques per month and do not have massive budget so cost is a big factor.

4. How long will this current attack likely last? I know it's impossible to answer, but approximately how long do these things last and is it likely to repeat in the future if we leave things alone?

Any knowledgable advice on this matter will be greatly appreciated as we are hurting badly due to this and even 1 day loss of income for us is extremely serious and hurtful.

or may be mput all files.

the only problem that i have ... is, that i need SSH commands advice.

if i type [mput *] i must keep window opened. but as u understand 60gb is can be transferred during ~10-15 hours. that's why need to know, is there any command that i must type (with mput *) and close window. So, don't be online all this time and/or keep shell window opened during this tranfer.

IGSoBe? Current Advice: Stay Away!

Oct 17, 2009

I have been with IGSoBe for a little over 2 months now, going on 3. And the rates seemed great. I have resold a few servers for them to clients, and everything seemed okay. The server setup times exceeded the 72 hour maximum. I have a C class of IP addresses with them which were supposed to take 7 days MAXIMUM, I was told in the *WORST* case scenario. I think I waited 3 - 5 weeks for the C class which had me at a standstill with VPS sales. Long setup times had a few clients back out. Have had a few comments about slow network in that it isn't blazing fast like some premium providers, although I haven't had a problem myself.

Each month goes by and there's a downtime about this, or a downtime about that. Well this month it has been smooth sailing, I thought all the problems must have been ironed out, and to my dismay come the 15th, the DAY AFTER paying the invoice for the server, BAM the server is offline. IGSoBe main website still up, as well as client servers so I know its not a mass issue. So I open a support ticket on the 15th. It is now the 17th and no reply to the support ticket. Earlier this afternoon I finally emailed the owner John directly and have still not got any response or acknowledgement. John is the only one that can enter the datacenter suite that he colocates in, so contacting him, or him being notified is important.

So going on 72 hours of downtime, no response or support from the provider, I am 100% sure no matter what John could offer me there's just no way I am staying with IGSoBe any longer than I have to. I just paid the invoice, so I am stuck for the rest of the month as all the income went towards the invoices. (One invoice for IP addresses, the other on a different day for the server). Dare I file a paypal dispute? My concern is also my clients data, about 60 VPS' total, and the WHMCS client database which I do not have a recent backup locally (I know better now to keep a backup of the most important of all important data and keep it in a safe place off-site!). If I file a dispute, it is unlikely I will see any of that data again. As if cubichost.org needs any more bad reputation right?

If you do a quick search here on WHT for igsobe you will first notice plenty of complaints.

So this is the deal with IGS:

John, the man with the plan is the sole proprietor (as of earlier this year, I know IGSOBE wasn't a registered LLC in the state of FL as the website might insinuate), he is the only one that physically manages the servers, transiting from his home to the suite he leases in the fibermedia datacenter in the carrier neutral facility in Miami FL. He used to, in the past, transit to and from the datacenter 2 times a day to set up servers, handle reboots, OS reloads, and that sort of thing. Recently, we had a client with a pentium 4 who needed a root password reset, this was on the 7th of this month, it is now the 17th and the password has still not been reset. I am in fear of losing this client because of this which would not help in our hopes to grow and succeed as a provider. I also have admin access in WHMCS at IGSOBE as a sales agent, and have noticed no one else logs in anymore, ESPECIALLY not John. Also, no one is hardly on LiveZilla chat or in IRC anymore.

I hope all goes well for John, I hope he can pull his act together and get IGSoBe back to working order. I would stay loyal but this is not the first time this has happened and I have to go. I have to make a good name for cubichost. I would suggest for the present time though, to stay away from igs!

So by the 7th of next month, hopefully earlier though I plan to make a move to BURST.NET which will hopefully go well I hear great things about them. Only a few bad things, mostly from > 1 year ago.

I exceed the "max_questions" variable they have limiting sql queries.

I have already created a bunch of users and it helps but it's still not perfect.

What I need:

• No SQL Limits.

• Ability to host up to 10 domains.

• 5 gigs of storage (user uploads).

• 20 gig/month of bandwidth.

• Fast network.

• Access to techs that know what they are doing.

• 10-20 emails

• A nice user friendly panel to handle everything.

• Looking to keep price around $10-$20 a month.

I would love to have a slice of the CPU and memory like a VPS but I don't know linux and it's a little scary.

Need Advice: Very Reliable Email, IMAP, Storage, Small B2b Business

Apr 2, 2008

I'm looking for quality hosting at the right price for a small business. I have been searching these forums, but just got no conclusion, and would appreciate any advice concerning 'features' and 'providers' that I shall look at or avoid.

My needs are:

- very reliable email, with IMAP, good spam filtering, and ability to handle Challenge Response type system;

- rSync and storage of company internal documents (intranet like);

- host a small static website of a small b2b company, with little but valuable traffic;

- handle multiple (non limited) addon domains;

- for the near future: mysql, Ruby on Rails (need to explore it), Python and a good Content Management System;

- good stats tracking tools -- ability to log a list of sessions would be great;

- control panel doesn't matter, ssh would be nice;

- datacenter location doesn't matter too much, connectivity, reliability, and uptime do;

- 5~10GB storage mainly email and internal docs;

- 1GB traffic mainly email;

- preferably with a community forum - I trust more on those who have it, and have nothing to hide;

Do you think I can get something reliable for under $10/month or $100/year ?

I have found these options:

GeekStorage - looks great, LiteSpeed is appealing, people behind it look experienced, I was almost signing for it when I was caught by several issues with long downtimes (over 24h) during the last 2 months;

MediaLayer - also offers LiteSpeed, good comments by many on here, but no listed prices - why hidding the prices? are they trying to screw our bucks? that doesn't sound good to me;

HostGator and LunarPages - very popular, but they don't seem the thing for me, maybe for those with blogs, forums, or GoogleAds oriented websites, I get puzzled how can they offer 600GB for $7.95/month !?

FusedNetwork, Steadfast, DowntownHost and many others - seem to be oriented to lower storage and higher traffic, the opposite of my case.

I know I can get dedicated storage services, but a large amount of my storage need is for email which need to be synchronized through IMAP. BTW, can IMAP be used to synchronize files beyond messages?

Opinion Needed About Liquidweb

Apr 20, 2007

I have 2 dedicated servers and one VPS with liquidweb. Lately I am facing quite an issue with support and I think I am posting 2nd time about liquidweb support.

Its all about my VPS, which use to hold 45 clients consumming around 50 % disk space and around 30 % bandwidth.

On 3rd of April VPS started to shoot emails about services failure and continuously went for 2 days. Then on finally 5th April, it went down. So I reported this to liquidweb support by creating a ticket(I created the ticket by shooting an email to support@liquidweb.com not by logging into PIMS). I got an reply in around 1 hr 20 mins that server is up. So i checked it and yes it was up, but with lots of issues. Still were getting service failure emails as they are failing and above all my root password stopped working. So couldn't login into WHM that time.

I reported this back on 6th April. No reply on 6th of April. On 7th april, I sent a reminder about the issue. They repiled by asking for my last 4 digits of credit card for verification purpose (Designatation of that person was written Web Designer) . Now when I ordered this using paypal, there is no question of last 4 digits of credit card. So I politely replied them back within 4 hours that I have used paypal for ordering the VPS.

They didn't reply back on 7th, not on 8th. Finally on 9th, when I lost few customers because I can't login into WHM, I wrote a bit stringly worded post in that support ticket.

To quote myself.....

"OPPS!!!....This has been a tremendous lack of response from you guys. It seems
that you don't have support guys anymore. I have lost few customers
because I can't login into my WHM. And it seems that you have changed my
root password and now not letting me know about this.

Suddenly one web designer is replying my ticket.

Whats is happening there?

Let me know my root password immediately.

Thanks
Krish"

Now after posting this reply, I decided to call them. So within 30 mins of this post I called them. Jason, a system admin replied and we talked politely about the issue. He accepted over phone that it was big mess.

Why big mess?????...because when he restored my old password and I logged into WHM....I don't see any account left . All data lost...everything gone as it appeared there is nothing left.

So he took up the issue of restoring account. He claimed that server was rooted. Now how come after so many days and communications they discovered my server was rooted?

Then he started restoring accounts....all accounts came back but with a loss of around whopping 80% loss of data. Most of customers started complaining about loss of emails and data. On 10th again I reported them about such loss and mysql which was not working. They fixed the mysql issue, but no database was left.

Then I got busy on 11th, could not follow it up as I should have been doing. But still as I was waiting replies from my customer about how much is the loss (I was telling them that we should be able to get them back from backup).

So I reported back to support on 11th as follows...I quote myself...

"I am waiting for reply from them. I noticed one thing. That the content is not
restored properly...as there are only 13% of space used right..which should be
around 50%."

On 12th I got following reply...I quote...

Load Balancing - What Is Needed

Dec 5, 2007

I´m thinking about setting up a load balanced setup. I´ll start with load-balancing MySQL, and after, I´ll go with the webservers. MySQL is currently more important.

I have two different bandwidth providers, with two different networks, in the same datacenter. Pings between both are under 1ms.

I was think about buying 4 servers, two for a MySQL Cluster (NDB), and two for a UltraMonkey Load Balancer setup. The MySQL Cluster API would be installed in another server, currently in use.

So, what else would I need? My intention is to have two servers in one provider, and two servers in another provider. Would this kind of setup require large quantities of bandwidth? Both providers wouldn´t let me pass a diferent cable for this purpose, so I would have to use the uplink.

Also, for webservers, I would only need two more servers, right? Maybe rsync them, and have sessions stored in database would be the best choice?

Thank You

Load Balancing - What Is Needed ...?

Aug 13, 2006

I would like to setup a load balancing pair of servers. Currently, I have about 7 servers, all of them working stand alone. I would like to use two of them to host some "power-hungry" websites, that require high availiability. What kind of hardware will I need to do it? I´ve already searched for some, and found load-balancers from F5 which seem to be very good, however they seem to be very expensive (9000 dolars maybe?). Is there any solution which might end cheaper? Will I need anything else?

Domain Name Server (DNS) Needed

May 9, 2008

I need 2 dedicated DNS servers.

I'd like one server on the east coast and one on the west or close to it.

They will be used for primary ans secondary dns only.

Simply running Bind and webmin.

I need cheap servers since they are pushing dns data around.

Not very bandwidth intensive or cpu resource intensive.

The most important thing is that the backbone redundancy is amazing.

You can get a good server at a lot of place these day, but who has the staff and backbone to make sure these servers are not bottlenecked and up and running.
