Moving Site: Ssh Advice

Jun 4, 2007

to move one of my sites from 1-st dedicated server to 2-nd dedicated server.

Of course i have shell access on both servers. As site is huge one (60gb space and 99% of files in one folder) going to tar -czvf this folder and move it.

or may be mput all files.

the only problem that i have ... is, that i need SSH commands advice.

if i type [mput *] i must keep window opened. but as u understand 60gb is can be transferred during ~10-15 hours. that's why need to know, is there any command that i must type (with mput *) and close window. So, don't be online all this time and/or keep shell window opened during this tranfer.

Moving From 1and1, Need Some Advice

Aug 17, 2008

Hey everyone, I've been a loyal customer of 1and1 for a few years now, however some circumstances have come up that require me to upgrade to something with unmetered bandwidth with some better hardware specs, simmilar in the fashion that 1and1 in Europe does (dedicated 100mbit for 2TB or so, then downgraded to 10mbit that can be reset to 100mbit manually for no extra cost). So I was looking at 1and1.co.uk's Buisiness III server ( order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/ServerRoot ), and I figured i could cut some corners here and there to snag me an account even though I'm in the US, but I realized that their price plus VAC makes them a bit less competitive in terms of price. I was wondering if anyone would know of some place that can offer the freedoms 1and1 offers (basically, "here's your server, here's our ToS, have a blast"), with simmilar and/or better specs as that specific package, and possibly deals internationally?

I've given the foums a good once-over (I've lurked for several years now), and have gotten a general idea, but I figured I'd ask just to get a better idea.

Trouble Moving A Site

Oct 19, 2009

We are in the process of changing web hosting companies and I am having difficulty in moving all the directories. We are a membership based company with over 8,900 members. The original web site (called Site a) has over 26,700 individual directories along with many tutorials in video format. The entire site is approximately 80 GB in size.

When I had the second web hosting company try to move the site via tar they indicated that the tar would abort at about 4 GB every time.

Is there any other way to move this site or get a complete backup of the site. I have no problem moving the MySQL databases.

Typically for small sites i am able to use server to server ftp to move files.

However, when moving large site like this, ftp might be disconnected and lost track of which files are not transferred.

How can i transfer/move the files (server to server) and resume if disconnected?

Moving Site From Linux To Windows

Jun 29, 2008

I have a customer who would like me to move his site from a linux box to windows. As we are all linux I'm not sure of any major implications this would have.

He wants to move as he is starting some .NET dev and wants to keep it all on the same server.

The linux box has a forum/blog type application (customer written). It was done in PHP and using MySQL.

The windows server is a Windows 2003 server.

As far as I know I'll have to install the entire windows OS, install all SP and updates. I will install IIS, .NET.

The MySQL installation is pretty simple and the PHP will be run as a CGI under IIS.

I am thinking of installing an anti virus/trjoan scanner but as there will be no mail server there I'm guessing it's not necessary.

I'm pretty sure I will need a firewall as there is no iptables equivalent for windoes (is there??). Any suggestions on something cheap / fast / stable and good.

If someobody can see anything I missed here PLEASE let me as it will be most appreciated.

is the 4GB + problem still around with a windows server 32bit ? The box will have exactly 4GB of memory.

Htaccess - Moving Site From Subdomain To New Domain

Oct 21, 2007

I have what I think is kind of a unique situation with a site move and Google is not turning up an answer that seems to work.

My site is currently in this format:

www.mydomain.com/site/file.html

And I am "moving" it but also switching from html to php, so the same file would be found at:

site.mydomain.com/file.php

I want to redirect users going to the old pages to their equivalent on the new site, however this is a little bit of a problem because this is a normal subdomain - it is the same directory as before but now there are php versions of the html files.

Right now I have all of the http files redirecting to their php equivilents, but I don't believe this is a desirable solution. Also it creates a problem when people go to www.mydomain.com/site (not indicating a specific file; just the subdir root) because I have www.mydomain.com/site/index.html redirecting to www.mydomain.com/site/index.php.

Quite a mess.

My first option is to put the redirects in the htaccess file on the "old" site. But is this a problem because there are over 500 pages on the site? Does it create a heavy server load because any requests force the server to serve a huge htaccess file?

The next alternative seems the most preferable although I'm not sure how to do it. It seems it could use wildcards so that anyone going to *.html gets directed to *.php or something like that. The only problem is that there are a small number of files that were removed completely and do not have php equivilants (about 5 or 6) and would need to redirect to the index.php in the root

DDoS Attack Advice

Aug 31, 2009

I have been in online business for about 5 years, but only this morning found out what DDoS is. Shame on me.

Our site was attacked this morning and the host (shared hosting) has switched off the dns connection so our site is currently down along with email. We are a small firm and we are absolutely getting killed by this right now.

The tech support in this hosting company (icdsoft com) is absolutely phenomenal based on previous experiences and here is what they said throughout the day:

"Your site gets approximately 60 hits/second. Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done in such situation. We already blocked the most active IP addresses in our firewall, but this does not help, as the attack comes from many sources "

About an hour later they tried again and the following was said:

"Unfortunately we do not know how long this attack will last. At the moment there are more than 1100 requests/second towards your site."

about an hour after that the following was said:

"The attack is still going on. Currently, the incoming rate is 8MBit/sec. We will enable your site, and we will notify you when the attack is over."

My questions are the following and I will appreciate any advise as I am absolutely clueless about this:

1. What should I do at this point? Should I move the site to a dedicated server and if so, will this solve the DDOS problem?

2. Should I purchase anti DDoS package? They are extremely expensive it appears.

3. If I move to a new dedicated host, which one should i choose? we are a small site, with about 10,000 uniques per month and do not have massive budget so cost is a big factor.

4. How long will this current attack likely last? I know it's impossible to answer, but approximately how long do these things last and is it likely to repeat in the future if we leave things alone?

Any knowledgable advice on this matter will be greatly appreciated as we are hurting badly due to this and even 1 day loss of income for us is extremely serious and hurtful.

IGSoBe? Current Advice: Stay Away!

Oct 17, 2009

I have been with IGSoBe for a little over 2 months now, going on 3. And the rates seemed great. I have resold a few servers for them to clients, and everything seemed okay. The server setup times exceeded the 72 hour maximum. I have a C class of IP addresses with them which were supposed to take 7 days MAXIMUM, I was told in the *WORST* case scenario. I think I waited 3 - 5 weeks for the C class which had me at a standstill with VPS sales. Long setup times had a few clients back out. Have had a few comments about slow network in that it isn't blazing fast like some premium providers, although I haven't had a problem myself.

Each month goes by and there's a downtime about this, or a downtime about that. Well this month it has been smooth sailing, I thought all the problems must have been ironed out, and to my dismay come the 15th, the DAY AFTER paying the invoice for the server, BAM the server is offline. IGSoBe main website still up, as well as client servers so I know its not a mass issue. So I open a support ticket on the 15th. It is now the 17th and no reply to the support ticket. Earlier this afternoon I finally emailed the owner John directly and have still not got any response or acknowledgement. John is the only one that can enter the datacenter suite that he colocates in, so contacting him, or him being notified is important.

So going on 72 hours of downtime, no response or support from the provider, I am 100% sure no matter what John could offer me there's just no way I am staying with IGSoBe any longer than I have to. I just paid the invoice, so I am stuck for the rest of the month as all the income went towards the invoices. (One invoice for IP addresses, the other on a different day for the server). Dare I file a paypal dispute? My concern is also my clients data, about 60 VPS' total, and the WHMCS client database which I do not have a recent backup locally (I know better now to keep a backup of the most important of all important data and keep it in a safe place off-site!). If I file a dispute, it is unlikely I will see any of that data again. As if cubichost.org needs any more bad reputation right?

If you do a quick search here on WHT for igsobe you will first notice plenty of complaints.

So this is the deal with IGS:

John, the man with the plan is the sole proprietor (as of earlier this year, I know IGSOBE wasn't a registered LLC in the state of FL as the website might insinuate), he is the only one that physically manages the servers, transiting from his home to the suite he leases in the fibermedia datacenter in the carrier neutral facility in Miami FL. He used to, in the past, transit to and from the datacenter 2 times a day to set up servers, handle reboots, OS reloads, and that sort of thing. Recently, we had a client with a pentium 4 who needed a root password reset, this was on the 7th of this month, it is now the 17th and the password has still not been reset. I am in fear of losing this client because of this which would not help in our hopes to grow and succeed as a provider. I also have admin access in WHMCS at IGSOBE as a sales agent, and have noticed no one else logs in anymore, ESPECIALLY not John. Also, no one is hardly on LiveZilla chat or in IRC anymore.

I hope all goes well for John, I hope he can pull his act together and get IGSoBe back to working order. I would stay loyal but this is not the first time this has happened and I have to go. I have to make a good name for cubichost. I would suggest for the present time though, to stay away from igs!

So by the 7th of next month, hopefully earlier though I plan to make a move to BURST.NET which will hopefully go well I hear great things about them. Only a few bad things, mostly from > 1 year ago.

Would the normal MS hosting package be suitable? I take it its not very flexible.

Leaving Rackspace, Advice For Layman Needed

Sep 4, 2008

After 7 years with Rackspace I have decided to leave for better and cheaper service elsewhere. The final straw (after a couple of years of tolerating increasing prices and decreasing support) was a ridiculous quote from them for adding 1Gb of RAM.

I exceed the "max_questions" variable they have limiting sql queries.

What I need:

• No SQL Limits.

• Ability to host up to 10 domains.

• 5 gigs of storage (user uploads).

• 20 gig/month of bandwidth.

• Fast network.

• Access to techs that know what they are doing.

• 10-20 emails

• A nice user friendly panel to handle everything.

• Looking to keep price around $10-$20 a month.

I would love to have a slice of the CPU and memory like a VPS but I don't know linux and it's a little scary.

Need Advice: Very Reliable Email, IMAP, Storage, Small B2b Business

Apr 2, 2008

I'm looking for quality hosting at the right price for a small business. I have been searching these forums, but just got no conclusion, and would appreciate any advice concerning 'features' and 'providers' that I shall look at or avoid.

My needs are:

- very reliable email, with IMAP, good spam filtering, and ability to handle Challenge Response type system;

- rSync and storage of company internal documents (intranet like);

- host a small static website of a small b2b company, with little but valuable traffic;

- handle multiple (non limited) addon domains;

- for the near future: mysql, Ruby on Rails (need to explore it), Python and a good Content Management System;

- good stats tracking tools -- ability to log a list of sessions would be great;

- control panel doesn't matter, ssh would be nice;

- datacenter location doesn't matter too much, connectivity, reliability, and uptime do;

- 5~10GB storage mainly email and internal docs;

- 1GB traffic mainly email;

- preferably with a community forum - I trust more on those who have it, and have nothing to hide;

Do you think I can get something reliable for under $10/month or $100/year ?

I have found these options:

GeekStorage - looks great, LiteSpeed is appealing, people behind it look experienced, I was almost signing for it when I was caught by several issues with long downtimes (over 24h) during the last 2 months;

MediaLayer - also offers LiteSpeed, good comments by many on here, but no listed prices - why hidding the prices? are they trying to screw our bucks? that doesn't sound good to me;

HostGator and LunarPages - very popular, but they don't seem the thing for me, maybe for those with blogs, forums, or GoogleAds oriented websites, I get puzzled how can they offer 600GB for $7.95/month !?

FusedNetwork, Steadfast, DowntownHost and many others - seem to be oriented to lower storage and higher traffic, the opposite of my case.

I know I can get dedicated storage services, but a large amount of my storage need is for email which need to be synchronized through IMAP. BTW, can IMAP be used to synchronize files beyond messages?

SoftLayer Major Packet Loss Issues -- Advice Needed

Mar 8, 2008

I recently switched over to SoftLayer for dedicated hosting and the servers are great. However we've been getting hit on and off with massive (50-80%) packet loss, which has been crippling our performance and causing all sorts of problems

I put in a support ticket and they linked me to the Internet Health Report website and said it was due to one of their bandwidth providers (I think Global CrossinG) and not on their internal network and to be patient as it could take time to resolve

Are any other SoftLayer customers going through this? Is this an unusual occurrence? I feel like if it was really one of their partners that it would be affecting a lot of their customers and it would be a high priority issue right?

I'm kind of stuck on what to do; I just invested a lot of energy into moving content onto these new servers and am concerned about whether to wait it out or whether to start finding a new company. This kind of packet loss is really unacceptable...

Plesk Automation :: Adding Dedicated IP Breaks Site (visitors Land On Default Site)

Apr 14, 2015

Starting point: a working site using a shared IPv4, dedicated IPv6, and SSL. HTTP and HTTPS work, the latter only using SNI of course.

The good news: If I simply allocate an IP resource of 1 to a subscription it is pulled from the pool, assigned to the service node, assigned to the web site, DNS is updated, and the site is automatically changed to using a Dedicated IPv4 and Dedicated IPv6.

The bad news: visitors land on the default web site of the service node, with the default SSL certificate.

Other info: I can't ping the new IP, even though it shows in "ip a l" and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:0. [edited]

After the IP assignment, it is still installed, and /etc/httpd/conf/plesk.conf.d/ip_default/domainname.conf shows the new certificate is being used.

However, a second set of VirtualHost entries is created in server.conf for this IP for ports 80 and 443, with NameVirtualHost enabled on the new IP. The port 443 entry uses the default certificate. Apache's setup this default VirtualHost entry will override the web site configuration because Apache is listening on port 443 with the wrong cert.

If I go to "Change webspace settings" and toggle to Shared IPv4, Dedicated IPv6 the site works again via HTTPS, and Dedicated IPv4 and Dedicated IPv6 breaks it again. Setting the SSL cert to None and back again does not work.

Setting the SSL cert to None, changing to a dedicated IP, and enabling SSL results in the server being inexplicably inaccessible...browsers no longer connect to either the default site or the correct site, and I don't see any entries in the vhosts's logs.

Database Site Vs Comany Site

Jun 29, 2009

I'm on a short assignment to inventory and manage the fixed assets of a small company, and we've just bought a web-based database for this purpose. While I'm pretty good at administering/running local databases, the web part has me stymied. Our company is between IT people, and there's no one on site with any more idea than I have about what's going on!!

Here's what I have so far:

--The company has a website which I'll call "ourwebsite.org" -- which I think, from searching the IP address the website points to, is hosted by HostMySite.com.

--There's also a record in DNS Management with the same name (ourwebsite.org), but pointing to our little server's local IP address.

--I need to find a way to get my database -- which I can access on the network at (server's IP address)/database (ie 0.0.00.0/database) -- online. I tried creating records in DNS Management (for ex., assets.ourwebsite.org) that point to our server's IP (the one that, if I type it in on the network, I can get to the site I'm looking for), but get generic "can't find the page" or "can't connect to the server" errors, even after 72 hours, when trying to access it from off the network.

--If I browse to assets.ourwebsite.org/database on the server itself, I get to the website! But if I go to that page from any other computer, on or off the network, it doesn't work.

--The Server is running Windows Server 2003

So, what are my options? Do I have to talk to the HostMySite.com people to add this page? Shouldn't I just be able to use my server's name (ourcompanyadc.ourcompany.org) and have that route to the server? What's going on here! Is there a simple way to get a tiny local-server-hosted website online outside of the network?

Moving Up To VPS

Jul 11, 2008

I've been on shared hosting for nigh on 3 years now. My site suddenly started growing rapidly recently and my shared host now has requested that I move onto a VPS or Dedicated as soon as possible (I would stay with them, but they don't have VPS options sadly)

My site is an image host, a dynamic image host too.

About 80% of my visits are from the US so I have decided, even though I am UK, that I need a US VPS.

I need it to be cheap, like $30 (To start with, while I gain funds) and generally reliable.

Would anyone know where such VPSs are? I would like 300MB or more RAM and about 5-10GB of disk space. My main issue right now is quality of customer service, I don't want to end up with a company that either has poor customer service or puts extreme restrictions on activity.
