Hivelocity - Server Setup Problems, Advice?
Mar 4, 2008
Seven days ago, I purchased a HiVelocity server. A week later and I am still waiting. It has had non-stop problems.
HiVelocity have agreed (after my asking, nothing was offered) to move my start date forward so I don't pay for this downtime, nonetheless, after a week of this I am beginning to feel some other effort is required on there part.
What's normal after a weeks setup time and still no working server? Refund? Upgrade to better working machine? Or just chargeback?

I've never purchased a dedicated server before, so I was wondering on what some of the more experienced members here thought.
This server I'm getting needs to be able to run VoIP (all details below), and maybe some E-commerce Software.
Details on what I need :
Two IBM Xeon+ servers having 2 GB RAM 250 GB HDD with fedora core 4 installed and live ip(public Ip) on those two boxes.
2Mbps direct line in one server.
Both boxes Should be in local LAN.
Would you recommend a Core2Duo server over the Xeon+ ?

I am running FC2 with cPanel.
My server stopped responding to everything from http to ping and I had to do a hard reboot on it.
Now, I'd like to figure out what happened but am not sure where to start. I've been sifting through /var/log/messages but can't pin point what I'm looking for.

Been using the Hivelocity dedicated server for a while now and at first was happy with its hosting performance, but after using Hivelocity for about 6 months Im no longer as impressed unfortunately (especially unimpressed with Hivelocity support).
When the dedicated server worked it was fine, but I was finding it down every so often and theres no remote reboot with an unmanaged Hivelocity server (at least Server4you had remote reboots with their servers) and their support staff on live chat (who have to order reboots manually!) are far from impressive at supporting their customers at times when they really need support!

Hey everyone, I've been a loyal customer of 1and1 for a few years now, however some circumstances have come up that require me to upgrade to something with unmetered bandwidth with some better hardware specs, simmilar in the fashion that 1and1 in Europe does (dedicated 100mbit for 2TB or so, then downgraded to 10mbit that can be reset to 100mbit manually for no extra cost). So I was looking at 1and1.co.uk's Buisiness III server ( order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/ServerRoot ), and I figured i could cut some corners here and there to snag me an account even though I'm in the US, but I realized that their price plus VAC makes them a bit less competitive in terms of price. I was wondering if anyone would know of some place that can offer the freedoms 1and1 offers (basically, "here's your server, here's our ToS, have a blast"), with simmilar and/or better specs as that specific package, and possibly deals internationally?
I've given the foums a good once-over (I've lurked for several years now), and have gotten a general idea, but I figured I'd ask just to get a better idea.

I am need a VPS plan which is good enough for handling such CPU intensive programs. I had already read reviews about solarvps,wiredtree and Hostv. I really liked offers from solarvps, but I am a noob when it comes to servers so please advice me hosting talk members. Plus I need full transfer support for my website from hostgator they are ridiculously expensive.

I have been in online business for about 5 years, but only this morning found out what DDoS is. Shame on me.
Our site was attacked this morning and the host (shared hosting) has switched off the dns connection so our site is currently down along with email. We are a small firm and we are absolutely getting killed by this right now.
The tech support in this hosting company (icdsoft com) is absolutely phenomenal based on previous experiences and here is what they said throughout the day:
"Your site gets approximately 60 hits/second. Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done in such situation. We already blocked the most active IP addresses in our firewall, but this does not help, as the attack comes from many sources "
About an hour later they tried again and the following was said:
"Unfortunately we do not know how long this attack will last. At the moment there are more than 1100 requests/second towards your site."
about an hour after that the following was said:
"The attack is still going on. Currently, the incoming rate is 8MBit/sec. We will enable your site, and we will notify you when the attack is over."
My questions are the following and I will appreciate any advise as I am absolutely clueless about this:
1. What should I do at this point? Should I move the site to a dedicated server and if so, will this solve the DDOS problem?
2. Should I purchase anti DDoS package? They are extremely expensive it appears.
3. If I move to a new dedicated host, which one should i choose? we are a small site, with about 10,000 uniques per month and do not have massive budget so cost is a big factor.
4. How long will this current attack likely last? I know it's impossible to answer, but approximately how long do these things last and is it likely to repeat in the future if we leave things alone?
Any knowledgable advice on this matter will be greatly appreciated as we are hurting badly due to this and even 1 day loss of income for us is extremely serious and hurtful.

to move one of my sites from 1-st dedicated server to 2-nd dedicated server.
Of course i have shell access on both servers. As site is huge one (60gb space and 99% of files in one folder) going to tar -czvf this folder and move it.
or may be mput all files.
the only problem that i have ... is, that i need SSH commands advice.
if i type [mput *] i must keep window opened. but as u understand 60gb is can be transferred during ~10-15 hours. that's why need to know, is there any command that i must type (with mput *) and close window. So, don't be online all this time and/or keep shell window opened during this tranfer.

I'd like to go with 1and1, using ASP.net and MS SQL Server, and the ability to setup lots of databases, websites and URLs, but I'm not keen on maintaining the server, updates, backups etc.
I'd also like to access the web space and upload files, from any computer.

I have been with IGSoBe for a little over 2 months now, going on 3. And the rates seemed great. I have resold a few servers for them to clients, and everything seemed okay. The server setup times exceeded the 72 hour maximum. I have a C class of IP addresses with them which were supposed to take 7 days MAXIMUM, I was told in the *WORST* case scenario. I think I waited 3 - 5 weeks for the C class which had me at a standstill with VPS sales. Long setup times had a few clients back out. Have had a few comments about slow network in that it isn't blazing fast like some premium providers, although I haven't had a problem myself.
Each month goes by and there's a downtime about this, or a downtime about that. Well this month it has been smooth sailing, I thought all the problems must have been ironed out, and to my dismay come the 15th, the DAY AFTER paying the invoice for the server, BAM the server is offline. IGSoBe main website still up, as well as client servers so I know its not a mass issue. So I open a support ticket on the 15th. It is now the 17th and no reply to the support ticket. Earlier this afternoon I finally emailed the owner John directly and have still not got any response or acknowledgement. John is the only one that can enter the datacenter suite that he colocates in, so contacting him, or him being notified is important.
So going on 72 hours of downtime, no response or support from the provider, I am 100% sure no matter what John could offer me there's just no way I am staying with IGSoBe any longer than I have to. I just paid the invoice, so I am stuck for the rest of the month as all the income went towards the invoices. (One invoice for IP addresses, the other on a different day for the server). Dare I file a paypal dispute? My concern is also my clients data, about 60 VPS' total, and the WHMCS client database which I do not have a recent backup locally (I know better now to keep a backup of the most important of all important data and keep it in a safe place off-site!). If I file a dispute, it is unlikely I will see any of that data again. As if cubichost.org needs any more bad reputation right?
If you do a quick search here on WHT for igsobe you will first notice plenty of complaints.
So this is the deal with IGS:
John, the man with the plan is the sole proprietor (as of earlier this year, I know IGSOBE wasn't a registered LLC in the state of FL as the website might insinuate), he is the only one that physically manages the servers, transiting from his home to the suite he leases in the fibermedia datacenter in the carrier neutral facility in Miami FL. He used to, in the past, transit to and from the datacenter 2 times a day to set up servers, handle reboots, OS reloads, and that sort of thing. Recently, we had a client with a pentium 4 who needed a root password reset, this was on the 7th of this month, it is now the 17th and the password has still not been reset. I am in fear of losing this client because of this which would not help in our hopes to grow and succeed as a provider. I also have admin access in WHMCS at IGSOBE as a sales agent, and have noticed no one else logs in anymore, ESPECIALLY not John. Also, no one is hardly on LiveZilla chat or in IRC anymore.
I hope all goes well for John, I hope he can pull his act together and get IGSoBe back to working order. I would stay loyal but this is not the first time this has happened and I have to go. I have to make a good name for cubichost. I would suggest for the present time though, to stay away from igs!
So by the 7th of next month, hopefully earlier though I plan to make a move to BURST.NET which will hopefully go well I hear great things about them. Only a few bad things, mostly from > 1 year ago.

I am wondering if any of you guys can give me some advice. I can not access my geekstorage reseller hosting panel nor will any of the sites come up on the net for me.
I think everyone else can see them but I can't access them. Geekstorage says they my IP is on the allow list and I am not blocked from their end. They said it was with my ISP.
I have embarq dsl. I called embarq this morning and they said that my ip was not blocked any way shape or form on their end. He was even able to pull up my cpanel and some of my sites. Also I can pinged from my computer to my control panel and it went through. I have done system restore on my machine thinking maybe windows update had caused something but that is not the case. Any advice would be greatly apprecaited. I have been with geekstorage several months and never had an issue accessing my accts.

To give a hint of the advice i am looking for,: say i have 300 different mp3 files at 3.0 mb per size what size of hosting and bandwidth should i look for that can cater for upwards of 100,000 users who will listen to up to 6 hrs of music on the site.

I'm looking to host my own website(s), money isnt really an issue, but I'd like some advice on which package would be most suitable. I can't upgrade to different platforms, so I need to get the right package from the start.
I like the sound of the dedicated server, but my experience of supporting servers isn't great, so I'm wary of getting this option.
The VPS looks good, could anyone please tell me how this works? What the difference between thi sand a dedicated server? Do you need alot of server support experience to use this?
Would the normal MS hosting package be suitable? I take it its not very flexible.

After 7 years with Rackspace I have decided to leave for better and cheaper service elsewhere. The final straw (after a couple of years of tolerating increasing prices and decreasing support) was a ridiculous quote from them for adding 1Gb of RAM.
I have read in the Forums about people having similar feelings, and there is advice here about where to go to instead. But I am a *total layman*, needing as many support services as possible (rebooting, backing up, etc.) so that I don't have to worry about anything really. So a lot of the advice here is over my head! Can anyone suggest where I should take my business?

I run a fairly large but low traffic oscommerce site that is currently hosted on ipower.
I exceed the "max_questions" variable they have limiting sql queries.
I have already created a bunch of users and it helps but it's still not perfect.
What I need:
No SQL Limits.
Ability to host up to 10 domains.
5 gigs of storage (user uploads).
20 gig/month of bandwidth.
Fast network.
Access to techs that know what they are doing.
10-20 emails
A nice user friendly panel to handle everything.
Looking to keep price around $10-$20 a month.
I would love to have a slice of the CPU and memory like a VPS but I don't know linux and it's a little scary.

I'm looking for quality hosting at the right price for a small business. I have been searching these forums, but just got no conclusion, and would appreciate any advice concerning 'features' and 'providers' that I shall look at or avoid.
My needs are:
- very reliable email, with IMAP, good spam filtering, and ability to handle Challenge Response type system;
- rSync and storage of company internal documents (intranet like);
- host a small static website of a small b2b company, with little but valuable traffic;
- handle multiple (non limited) addon domains;
- for the near future: mysql, Ruby on Rails (need to explore it), Python and a good Content Management System;
- good stats tracking tools -- ability to log a list of sessions would be great;
- control panel doesn't matter, ssh would be nice;
- datacenter location doesn't matter too much, connectivity, reliability, and uptime do;
- 5~10GB storage mainly email and internal docs;
- 1GB traffic mainly email;
- preferably with a community forum - I trust more on those who have it, and have nothing to hide;
Do you think I can get something reliable for under $10/month or $100/year ?
I have found these options:
GeekStorage - looks great, LiteSpeed is appealing, people behind it look experienced, I was almost signing for it when I was caught by several issues with long downtimes (over 24h) during the last 2 months;
MediaLayer - also offers LiteSpeed, good comments by many on here, but no listed prices - why hidding the prices? are they trying to screw our bucks? that doesn't sound good to me;
HostGator and LunarPages - very popular, but they don't seem the thing for me, maybe for those with blogs, forums, or GoogleAds oriented websites, I get puzzled how can they offer 600GB for $7.95/month !?
FusedNetwork, Steadfast, DowntownHost and many others - seem to be oriented to lower storage and higher traffic, the opposite of my case.
I know I can get dedicated storage services, but a large amount of my storage need is for email which need to be synchronized through IMAP. BTW, can IMAP be used to synchronize files beyond messages?

I recently switched over to SoftLayer for dedicated hosting and the servers are great. However we've been getting hit on and off with massive (50-80%) packet loss, which has been crippling our performance and causing all sorts of problems
I put in a support ticket and they linked me to the Internet Health Report website and said it was due to one of their bandwidth providers (I think Global CrossinG) and not on their internal network and to be patient as it could take time to resolve
Are any other SoftLayer customers going through this? Is this an unusual occurrence? I feel like if it was really one of their partners that it would be affecting a lot of their customers and it would be a high priority issue right?
I'm kind of stuck on what to do; I just invested a lot of energy into moving content onto these new servers and am concerned about whether to wait it out or whether to start finding a new company. This kind of packet loss is really unacceptable...

I am currently Hivelocity customer (also have servers with Softlayer).
I am wondering if Hivelocity ever plans to make portal options similar to Softlayer?
I am talking about automated os reinstall (better prices or free like SL does)
I am talking about Support ticket (Administration tickets which are 3 dollars at Softlayer).
I am talking about free kvm and stuff like that.
I am not asking this because i don't think that hivelocity is not good provider. I am with hivelocity for about 10 days now, and its been fine.
I must say that i am not very impressed with their customer portal page, ticketing page, server page, nor bandwidth graphs (where they had a problem with my account since the first day i signed up .. and problem is still there, 'they are working on it' which is fine ... i don't mind).
I must say that hivelocity gave me great deal on the server, thats why i ordered it with them.
I just hope that they will make some stuff hingssupport easier for their customers and make it less expensive to have our servers fixed, worked on.

I couple of weeks ago I was in need for a dedicated server, for my file hosting site. Now I needed the site as asap, so I even took the weekend off work just so I can work on the server and make sure everything is up and running.
So I found hivelocity by searching through the net and it had pretty good prices so, before I bought the server from Hivelocity I specifically asked how long will it take to setup the server and they told me it would be 24 hours. So I went and bought the server from them believing I would have it by saturday evening. So the next day around the same time I checked whether my server was online but it wasnt, I contacted support and asked them whats going on. This is what really irritated me..
I spoke to the same guy i spoke to the day before when buying the server. I asked him when my server would be online and he said its gonna be another 6 hours. So I told him what he told me yesterday.. he said it would take 24 hours. He then claimed he doesn't remember saying how long it took when I could CLEARLY remember he did, I wouldn't of bought the server if I didnt ask. And then after arguing with him he went and checked his records and turned around and said yes 24 hours was an estimate. First of all, why on earth would you say you don't remember that conversation and then the next second change your words.. he never said 24 hours was a rough estimate.
So even after that I waited that 6 extra hours (so I would have been 6AM in the UK), I came woke up the next morning around 12PM (so its now been 12 hours) to find the server still wasn't online. I went back onto support and then they said I have to wait upto ANOTHER 16 hours!
Now if I knew i would have to wait this long I would have just canceled my order there and then but I was reluctant enough to wait thinking that it may come online within the next few hours. The server went online the next afternoon! (Monday afternoon) So instead of their 24 hours they told me it took almost 72 hours!
I didnt even login to the account to check whether the server was online or not.. i went straight to support and asked them to cancel my account and give me a refund. They had no problem canceling my account, but they never gave me a refund saying its part of the T&C not to give refunds for dedicated servers.
So let me sum this up... I was told I would get a server within 24 hours which i didn't... i was lied to.. i took 2 days off of work...and then paid $165 for A SERVER WHICH I NEVER USED!

Does Hivelocity have a UK data center for their dedicated servers ? If they don't, where exactly in the USA is their data center located?
Anyway, I was just at Hivelocity's new Cloud server site www.thecloudiscoming.com and it says it is being launched on 10/15/2009 but they only have a "beta signup" option. Anyone know when the full service will be operational and the pricing?

I placed an order with Hivelocity to find out two days later that they want some extra signed paperwork (paypal authorisation form + copy of id). They never disclosed any of this during the signup process or discussions with their sales staff which is making me hesitant to use a provider that pulls strange tricks like old managed.com.
Any way do you have any suggestions where I can get a rapid deploy of FreeBSD 7.0 that is not Layered Technologies, Sagonet, Managed.com or Hivelocity?

i had a bad start with them, but now I got my server up 24/7 for 18 days straight now. They charge well for a 300 gb per month and 100 mbps of bandwdith. Their support is really quick too. The bad problem was my server crash every 2 time per week and I told the support if they can help me with that problem but they said they will charge 68 dollars per hr which is really bad. So i had to fix that problem, i don't know if i did or not. But over all, Hivelocity.com is great provider so far.

Do I tell my hosting provider to just install the OS and give me ssh action and that's it? Don't install any control panels or any other stuff? I want one domain and one subdomain on it though and ftp action.

I am very disappointed with business practices at Hivelocity. I rent a budget server from them and always pay on time.
Last week I received a reminder claiming an unpaid invoice and was threatened twice my service would be terminated if I would not pay. I checked my debits and all hosting invoices were paid.
I noticed they have sent me another invoice for a remote reboot feature for 3$. I have never ordered such feature and I am very surprised they dare to invoice me for a service I never ordered.
Unless this was an error, I find this very shady to be invoiced for items I never ordered - Yet, to be threatened disconnection of paid services. Neither an explanation why i was invoiced for unwanted items nor an apology was offered. They said I could cancel the service ... but why would I need to cancel an order I never made?

This is 4th day i am having network issue on HiVeloCity.
Does anyone else here experiencing the same problem, or its only rack where my server is located?
I am unable to use my server for almost 4 days as i already said, and they still have no solution for me.
Every time i open up a live chat with support, they tell me that they are checking, working on it, having someone see it, etc. but problem is still there.
What should i do?
I am going to post pings from SoftLayer and my home to their main ip (their websites' IP where i see pocket loss as well)
... because of this my websites are opening so slow, and many ppl are complaining about this.
Since there is many experts on this forum i would like advise from you guys.
I would like to stay with HVC if they can fix this, if not looks like i will have to look for another provider.

It would appear that Hivelocity's networks were incredibly, or portions of them were, from 430 am CST to around 630 AM this morning, and once again, god only knows how long it'll be down this time. 1m files were taking upwards of 1 minute to download and traceroutes 45+ seconds to complete, when one can get in the server that is. Anyone else noticing this? Here's a few traceroutes from inside the network (again, when I can actually get in). Quite latent ...
