LiquidWeb Dedicated 1month Review

Jun 30, 2008

I help a not-so-much-tech-savy friend running a busy wordpress website (50-70.000visitors each day) and a bit busy vbulletin forum (100 to 350 users online, 957 record), which is hosted at LiquidWeb since a month.

I got the server with a WHT special, is a AMD X2 5000+ , 4gb ram, dual sata raid1 hardware + third backup disk, cpanel fully managed.

I am not usually in the market for fully managed dedicated servers, because I am quite expert in running unix boxes, but as my free time begins to decrease I had no longer the time to help my friend every day, even for a simple httpd.conf vhost configuration change, so I thought to switch to a control panel fully managed server, so when I am not available he could write to support to have issues solved, without him waiting for me.

I decided to choose LiquidWeb for this project for several reason:

1) Sales person (M.Leven) replied to my pre-sales question very fast, and in a convincing way.
2) Network speed test was good
3) Price was very affordable. I used to pay 260$/mo for a dual core, 2gb ram, 2x160gb sata disks (raid software), unmanaged, no control panel, hosted in the UK.
For 1$ less than the previous price at LiquidWeb I got:
- Slightly slower cpu
+ Double Ram
+ Control Panel license
+ Hardware Raid and an addictional backup disk (3disk total)
+ Fully management.
And the network differences with europe DC are not so big like I thought before.
4) It's a big solid company, they own all their equipment. While this is not a factor by itself (look at some horrible big companies like godad and 1und1), it's a plus if you're already sure of the quality, compared to a smaller/personal company.

So, order process went smoothly, I have got my server in maybe 8 hours after a phone call which welcomed my friend to liquidweb (and verified the identity).
We have been happy to not need to provide a ID scan (as most previous hosters who lost my business did), because we are afraid of identity thefts and I won't ever send my IDs overseas. A phone call is enough (landline phone number is on the white pages anyway so it would easy to match with a name and more secure than requesting a easily-fakeable ID digital copy).

After I got the server I have begun setting everything up, and moving the data using rsync. I enjoyed the PIMS user area where you have a complete breakdown of your server load, bandwidth graphs, reverse ip control and else, with stats updated every minute.

The day after (once the rsync was done) I tried to setup the websites, and this is where I encountered my first (and unique at the moment) problem with LiquidWeb.

Their server "custom engineering" was not so good as I expekted.

Mysql was very slow to run, even at importing files, because was using default settings (very conservative on a 4gb ram server!) so I created a custom my.cnf file and everything went smoothly (I hope they're able to do this on request for customers, since they're a full managed provider).
After I switched DNS, I realized SuPHP/PHP-cgi was causing extremely high loads, from 7.00 to 15.00 ... So I compiled Apache 2.2.8 (now updated to 2.2.9) and PHP5.2.6 dso (mod_php) with my custom options, and cpanel built-in eaccelerator support, now my average load is 0.60-0.70

I understand that if you want a more secure php environment you need to bear a performance tradeoff, but this was too much (10-20x)!

I think that the only liquidweb fault is not stating clearly that if you choose their sever-secure package with su-php / php-cgi, and you run an intensive PHP application, then your performance would be severely degraded.

I hope this is not a way to upsell better hardware to customers, but I am confident it's not the case as most people won't buy a load balancer and a couple of addictional servers for sure, they will simply go away, so it's not in their best interest to provide slow servers.

I think they should provide a choice or at least a complete information if you want an hardened server:
1) Slightly hardened (apf+rkhunter+someotherstuff), but with mod_php and without those very restrictive mod_security rules: best for performances and compatibility.
2) Highly hardened, with php-cgi, strict mod_security, with a warning for the user of the possible performance problem if they run really busy php websites.

Anyway, once I optimized my apache and my websites, I had not any further problem, and my website is running smoothly. So that's the only negative thing i can warn any users about Liquidweb.

Support: Always very responsive, fast and competent answers. Unlike most provider claiming "fully managed" this is really proactive. Once I was upgrading apache and forgot to turn 80port monitoring off. They proactively contacted me in less than 5 minutes to ask what was going on, and to request my (changed) root password if I wanted them to check.
When I reboot my server or shutdown apache for a while I often see their ssh login from a .liquidweb.com box.

Network : Well, the surprising thing is I am really happy with the network. It's surprising because I live in southern europe and I am never happy with most USA locations (why not host in Europe? Because is too expensive indeed, dollar is so cheap nowadays). Liquidweb facility is amongst the fewer ones I have been happy with in several years (the other ones being Ashburn, VA; NAC, NJ and Fortress ITX, NJ), so I hope they keep a premium network this way. I push 3.5mbit/s on average, with 12-20mbit spikes.

So in the end I would raccomend LiquidWeb for the overall price/quality ratio, if you are in the market for a fully managed dedicated server with a control panel.

I hope our experience will keep being good as it is. If this will not happen you will be the first to know ;-) I have almost never been sweet with hosting providers in the past on this forum, but at the moment really I have nothing to complain about LW service, so let's hope it all keeps that way.

[Review] Geekstorage - Not So Happy

Oct 5, 2008

I have to tell you about my not so happy experience with Geekstorage.

Let me make it short:

Slow loads, there are hours where it's barely loading, from anywhere in the world, I've sent in 1-2 support tickets, but the only answer I got was that it should be okay again (oversold?), no concrete answers at all.

Right now, I'm having a DB Error on my forum, been so for the past hour or so, still waiting for a reply to my ticket, marked as High Priority.

Support: Slow, just plain out slow, I was assured to get my tickets answered within a hour when I spoke to their sales dude, sadly, they havent been able to hold their end of the bargain within that one.

Overall: They are good if you want to have slow loading websites, fly by the day support answers, and in my shoes, a DB Error on my forum.

I am looking for a new host, anyone with any good recommendations ? Pref EU location, but will also be able to live with a Texas based location.

VPSVILLE Review, Very Happy Customer

Jun 13, 2008

I haven't seen any reviews on these guys so I thought I'd contribute. I started an account with them last 5 or 6 weeks ago and had a great experience.

setup:
was very very fast. It literally took 2 minutes. I paid with paypal and the server was made by the time I got the setup email to my gmail account. I got a town plan mostly for my new blog.

control:
this is very important for me. I like to be able to reinstall the OS without opening a support ticket. vpsville does this very well, you can choose any Linux os you want and its setup fast!

I was also able to set the rDNS without opening a ticket. That was a nice change.

speed:
the server is fast, so fast it seems like a dedicated box sitting beside me. my ping time is only 10ms from my house (Toronto, Rogers network) so that might be part of it.

Low ping time
was very important for me as I will use it as a game server. compiling code on the server is really fast and so is yum or aptitude. apache loads pages quick. No complaints at all.

support:
really good. No complaints. I asked about lots of stuff and I always get a quick reply. I was having some problems with iptables and they gave me a firewall script that does exactly what i wanted.

Axishost 2 Year Review - Very Happy Customer

Mar 31, 2008

I have had a dedicated server with Axishost for just shy of 2 years.

Before moving to Axishost, I had done the shared hosting account thing with a few companies and was never impressed with the performance or uptime. After realizing that most companies grossly oversell their shared servers, I decided that investing in a dedicated server was the best route for my company.

I recall researching and sending some 'test' helpdesk tickets to a few popular companies. None of the companies I emailed were very helpful. They just wanted to close the sale and sell me more server than I needed.

Tina @ axishost took the time to find out what my needs were and offered me a good deal on a dedicated box.

Overall, I just wanted a dependable server that I could put a couple dozen fairly low volume accounts on...have a company fully manage the box, and run a server that is Very reliable and fast.

Axishost delivered.

For about $170/month they supply me with a fast single core linux server running Cpanel.

They fully manage the box and provide all the support I need in a timely manner. Rsync backups are included.

My server is in Gnax/Atlanta and has done a fine job for 2 years.

Support ticket responses are always fast. If I put in an emergency ticket it is taken care of within minutes.

I am a happy customer, and I recommend Axishost to anyone looking for a fully managed cPanel server.

Gigenet Review

Jan 6, 2009

I've never written a review before neither have i really remained active on these forums, but i'd like to give you my small updated review of Gigenet if it would help.

I can honestly say i've only been with these for a week at the most thus going to give a monthly update on my hosting experience with Gigenet. If you don't fancy reading through this whole post then let me make it quick for you, i've purchased a dedicated server from them and they're fantastic - i would highly recommend them to anyone. But if you fancy reading through my so called detailed review then feel free to read on.

The Setup

-----------

I ordered at about 10pm GMT (what time this is in the US i do not know) but i woke up the following morning with all the details i needed to start working on the dedicated server. The time was 23:23:51 when i receieved details for the server so the setup was a little under 1 hour and a half. I'll let you discuss the setup time, but i thought it was fantastic.
The Support

-----------

I'm very new to the web hosting industry (i've had experience with resellers before) so i've required a lot of help from their sales and support - which i can happily say has been the best experience i've had from a company such as theirselves before. They've been able to reply to all my support tickets within 5 minutes and i've started about 5 different tickets on numerous occasions requiring help, they gave a prompt reply with everything i needed to know.

The Staff

------------

Brilliant support staff and very helpful, just what you'd want to pay for. The staff make sure you're happy with the support they have given you, fantastic support usually very detailed helpful responses. Just like to say a personal thanks to each staff member for being polite and helpful with all my requests. Not forgetting the sales staff either, Brandon Hale - very helpful guy, i'm sure the others are as well.
The Pricing

-------------

I'm assuming it's not the lowest pricing in the world, it's always possible to find better deals elsewhere but i would seriously pay more for the service Gigenet has to offer, it's well worth it. If the service they have provided so far is going to continue which i'm sure it will, then i'm going to be using these guys for years to come.
The Uptime

-------------

It's just what you'd expect for a weeks of hosting really, 100%. But the service they run is definately professional so i can't see any problems persisting, but i'll update you all with this information as time passes. I've not met any other problems as of yet either, but again i'll update you on my progress.

Again, i can't emphasise enough how happy i am to be a customer of Gignet's and i'm going to be a customer for a while to come. I hope this small review has been of any help to anyone currently researching Gigenet. I also really apreciate the fantastic service Gigenet has currently provided, so i thought i'd show some apreciation and post a review for them.

Gigenet: Post-migration Review

Oct 17, 2009

It's been close to a month since we've migrated away from our former provider to Gigenet, and after monitoring the activity and health of our new servers, I felt it was time to write a review.

This isn't about bashing our old partners, the data center and our former managed hosting provider. I'm leaving names out of this, and I'll appreciate it if the couple people on WHT who know our old providers keep that info to themselves, because this is not about them; it's about Gigenet.

Support
Tickets/support is about as good a place as any to start. Our old setup had all management running through our managed hosting provider, and tickets were either closed unanswered, or we might wait days to get a response, which was too often less than helpful.

Our setup now includes standard management through Gigenet, and we've contracted Rack911 to handle management of some very specialized services and security requirements we wouldn't expect Gigenet or any other data center-based management team anywhere to handle. That's another (very positive) review for another day.

During the course of migrating (five servers during three weekends), we opened perhaps 10 tickets regarding server config, IPs, provisioning certain services, etc., and the longest we had to wait for any ticket to get answered was 9 minutes. In all but one case, the first response resolved the ticket - the remaining ticket did require more back-and-forth communication, which is to be expected. Even better, instead of hearing about everything that can't be done (something we'd come to expect from our previous provider), they focused on what could be done, and they did it. Things were handled properly and professionally every time.

Best of all, I can actually call my admins or chat with them, sort out issues in minutes instead of days or months.

Hardware Performance
Despite how much happier we are with the response we're getting from our admins, this benefit pales in comparison to the performance increase we've seen since we moved.

We have a single client who accounts for three of the five servers we're hosting right now. Again, I'm leaving names out, because this is not their endorsement of Gigenet - it's our endorsement. The performance boost we've seen since moving has been nothing less than astonishing.

Of those three servers, let's consider the old Web server config:
- Xeon Quad Core, one of the mid-2008 E series
- 6GB RAM
- Public 100MBPS connection
- SATAII 250GB HD

And now the new Web server:
- Core i7 920
- 8GB RAM
- Public 100MBPS connection
- 10k Raptor 147GB x2, RAID1

So, it's a step up. Is it a significant step up? I'll leave that to hardware geeks to debate. But I don't think anyone can argue that the increase in hardware does not match the increase in performance when you look at these numbers:

Old Web Server
Typical Load: 2 - 5
High Traffic Load: Always 15+, often 40+, sometimes reaching 200+ and requiring a restart
Typical Idle: 85%
High Traffic Idle: 0%, and it could stay buried for 15-30 minutes at a time!

New Web Server:
Typical Load: .1 - .3
High Traffic Load: .5 - 1 (I've only seen it go above 1 twice)
Typical Idle: 95-100%
High Traffic Idle: 80-90%

We have even more revealing numbers from when we did some post-migration stress testing. I won't get into details here (I might be doing a more thorough write-up about this in the future), but the general conclusion was that the new server could handle 6x the traffic of the old server and still serve pages faster than the old server did even with all traffic already routed off that server.

I attribute this to three things (caveat: I'm not a hardware expert, and this is my best guess).

1) The hardware is a step up, and that will account for some performance boost.

2) Rack911 optimized this server from day one.

3) The components/build are simply higher quality.

If you happen to know the client who uses these three servers, again, please keep this info to yourself, but try surfing their site now, and you tell me whether it's faster, like maybe 3-4x faster! They've been getting quite a few people complimenting them on their site's performance over the last few weeks. I'd like to take credit for that, but I can't.

----------

So there you have it - another satisfied customer of Gigenet (and Rack911). I hope over time my experience with them continues to be the same quality it is now. We're paying a bit more than we were before (for both hosting and administration), but we're getting so much more for our money!

Gigenet - Quick Initial Review

Dec 1, 2008

I another thread recently I done a 5 year review for another provider hover circumstance changed and I took on a couple of Gigenet servers ( relatively high end)

Sales were extremely efficient working with me to achieve what I needed at a price I was comfortable with, replies were fast and concise so I ended up with 2 new machines and backup service.

Normally I don't need a lot of support and for the first few weeks nothing bar rDNS set ups - However I ran into some serious post migration issues over the past few days that had me stumped, support has been some of the best I have ever received both in speed and efficiency -

Anyway I sincerely hope I will be coming back to this thread in 5 years time to update it.

HiVelocity Review (Possible Client Review)

Apr 17, 2009

I just want to take the time and review Hivelocity. Boy oh boy, where to start. I am just so pleased with the customer support they offer and I don't even own a single product with them.

I currently own a server with another comapny and I am always looking at other options for cheaper prices, better services and etc.

I found Hivelocity through WHT and I took the time to start up a live chat which was answered quickly from Kevin. Kevin was very nice and welcoming. I was asking about discounts they could provide and etc. Kevin showed me their reseller program which seemed to be something I may be interested in. After a 15-20 minute chat with Kevin, he offered to add me on MSN if I ever wanted to chat which I thought was pretty nice.

After I got off live chat with Kevin, I decided to keep researching Hivelocity. I immediately signed up on Twitter (I never had a Twitter Account). I saw they had some awesome deals. They were offering an awesome deal today it looks like this:

"The next person to go to our site, open a live chat and say "I just got your TWEET" gets a Core2Duo 3.0Ghz e8400 for $5 the first month."

By time I even got onto Twitter, I noticed that this was already taken. I kept browsing their Twitter and hey what do you know, another great deal it followed like this:
"The 1st $5 Core2Duo sold in about 20 seconds so lets do it again. The next person to open a live chat saying "Give me a $5 Server" gets it."

I decided I was going to be late as the last one sold in 20 seconds. Well, it turned out it did get sold but, I got into a Live Chat with David from Hivelocity.

David informed me that the server was sold and I was a bit too late. What do you know, more great discounts! He offered me the same server for $5 on the first month. I decided not to take advantage of the offer as I wouldn't be able to put much use to the offer. I will be moving to Hivelocity within the next 1-3 months.

Overall I am very pleased with the great offers they provide and the support is just amazing!

Based on the sales support and the deals they provide, I did a bit of a rating on Hivelocity.

Sales Support:5/5
Deals:5/5
Overall:5/5

Also, if you decide your interested in Hivelocity's awesome offers, I would follow them on Twitter! They are constantly updating their Twitter and offering great deals. Their Twitter deals are 100% and it's pretty awesome a company like Hivelocity offers products and support so great!

I don't think I've given my thanks to KH yet so here goes..

I've been with KH for over 2 years now and worked my way up from a regular VPS to a Hybrid VPS. Their costs are low for their high quality of service, product, and care.

They have always answered my tickets in a timely manner and been lenient in my times of financial crisis when I fell behind payments a few times. They even allowed me to keep my 10% lifetime discount when I upgraded to a Hybrid VPS just because I've been a member for so long. They also have scalability opportunities for members that need dedicated servers (which I will be moving to in a few months).

There really is no need to fatten this post up. Just take away from this that KH is the absolutely best hosting provider out there.

Happy With Giga-International

Oct 14, 2009

i want to post my experience with giga-international.

A month ago i was looking for a dedicated server to start a gaming community, at first i was looking for something cheap and simple, just for start and check how it was going until i get a better server.

Well, my first server with they was a Pentium 4, i've sent the payment on a saturday so i didn't expect an answer until the monday, and since they say at the website that usually takes 1-3 days to setup the server, i dont care too much about the time.

My surprise was, the monday at 7:52 GMT +1 i receive an email confirming the receipt of the payment, all ok, so i was like, ok, i must wait 3 days.

But no, 2 hours later another mail was at my gmail account with my login data, they had the server up and running in 2 hours when they say in the website that may take 1-3 days to complete the setup, that was a VERY nice start.

Since my gameservers was a huge succes, i have bough the server package with the Core 2 Quad Q6600 and 8GB of ram, same as above, they receive the payment and 2 hours later i was configuring my server.

Actually i host 4 Team Fortress 2 gameservers with 32 slots each, this morning with all the servers full the netgrap was reporting a 1-1.5mb/s continue data transfer rate and the servers running so fine.

The support team was very helpful, when i was thinking to get the quad server they have helped me about the SO choice mainly due the ram.

Also their Windows License offer is awesome, you dont pay the first 3 months of the Windows license, only a little setup fee (14€ for W2008 Web)

Happy HostGator.com Customer

Apr 1, 2008

I just wanted to let you know that based on your recommendations I ended up with HostGator.com. The good thing I like about them is simplicity. I purchased an account and it was active VERY FAST. Compared to my previous experiences, this amazing. I was able to upload and start working with my space. They have a great interface with a cPanel link. They have a guide teaching newbies how to start they even offered tutorials on how to add my DNS using namecheap.com! which is my domain-name registrar.

The speed is excellent and I was using a webbased file uploader. I will check using FTP it should get faster. I have so many things to do to test their other features. I would definitely upgrade to their dedicated plan if I get a better bandwidth for their plan.

Conclusion: Great experience. Fast, professional and convenient. I recommend it.

I will keep this page updated if I get anything extra to add. Cons or Pros.

FortressITX/DedNow: Still Happy After Ten Months....

May 18, 2009

Toward the end of August 2008, I published this review as that week I became a customer under the DedicatedNow service line. In it, you'll read that I was more than pleased with the service quality I was receiving across-the-board. I prefer the personal control of a dedicated server over shared hosting, any day.

It's been approximately ten months since that review. My opinion of this company has not changed a single iota since I started service. I have since obtained additional services, including Applicure DotDefender, and am researching off-site backup solutions with Josh in the sales team this week.

Performance has been unsurpassed. My single core P4 went about its business for almost 300 days, and the only reason I had to reboot, was due to my own fault, mis-typing 'ip route del /' and hitting enter before specifying the proper address & range to unrestrict. So yeah, the only reason I had a service interruption is because I hosed it my darn self....accidentally.

The times I do work with their techs, I'm met with the same personable, professional individuals I've been working with since the beginning. I figured out the issue I was having with cpmove.

Boil it all down: I'm still thrilled with these guys. I cannot recall a single disruption that wasn't caused by my own ISP, and I love the early email notifications during planned maintenance. Looks like the prices are a bit lower nowadays, too.

I am not an employee nor affiliate of Sagonet but I wanted to recommend a really good service I've had to date from them. I've been with them for about two years now, and as a large number of my customers are US based, we require a US hosting presence. Being in the UK, it's incredibly helpful to be able to speak to a real technician 24/7 if required. The service uptime has been constant and their prices are very good. I would definitely have no problem recommending them and I don't usually say that.

Gigenet

Apr 30, 2009

I signed up for a basic dedicated server (carbon.aeflexmedia.com/69.65.42.26) from Gigenet back in September. It's now almost May, and I've got one simple thing to say about Gigenet - they are incredible.

I had a small issue when first getting the server, where I was supposed to have VPN/KVMoIP access and didn't have it, but a quick phone call to their support team, and a couple of hours later, I had the server setup with VPN and KVMoIP. Aside from that, as well as a few tickets regarding IP/PTR requests, I haven't had to use the support very much, but when I do contact support, replies come typically within 5-10 minutes, sometimes even less.

The network is incredible, definitely the best network in the Midwest, maybe even the US. It's never down, and latency is always low to my location in suburban Chicago, on both DSL and Cable. If there are any issues, their team are always willing to solve the issue.

The server's an Intel Core2Duo E7200, with 2GB of RAM, and a 250GB Hard Drive. The hardware is top notch, and I haven't had any issues with it. The server also has KVMoIP/IPMI, which is accessible through the control panel, as well as through VPN.

Gigenet Setup

Jan 8, 2009

We have servers in many DC's FDC, Singlehop, DedicatedNOW, ThePlanet, but no one set up our servers faster than Gigenet. I placed the order and 2 hours later I get my server login details and all the plugins I needed were also installed. I also read on their website that 95% of the servers get deployed within 2 hours which is great! I have contacted support 2 times and they replied quickly and they did exactly what I asked for. So far so good and will update everyone in a couple of months on how everything goes.

Gigenet Vs Softlayer

May 30, 2009

if someone who has used both the providers could help me decide between the two.

I need an unmanaged server and location for both is fine for me.

Gigenet: First Feedback = MORE THAN BAD

Oct 18, 2008

Our website, hosted in Canada, came under DDOS attack 4 days ago and our IP immediately got null routed. I understand this action.

As Gigenet is reputed for being good there, I contacted them, among other suppliers of remote protection.

A first chat with Derek at Gigenet.com was pretty good, despite I got disconnected a few times due to my internet connection problems. Derek quickly supplied a test IP, and I sent the website there. Unfortunately (!) the attack had stopped and he could not see anything. Then I got disconnected and could not connect again before the morning
In the morning I sent an email to Derek as he was not online, asking him some details about the setup, especially technical modifications we would have to make to our scripts.

I had to wait TWO days to get a reply, more than short. I emailed him again.

I connected again yesterday on Gigenet, could catch Derek 2 minutes, he said "I reply to your email quickly". I told him we are waiting his reply to subscribe to their proxyshield protection.

After 2 hours wait, I went to the gigenet chat again and John Lee helped me a lot, replying to my questions, but the last one "must be replied by Derek", he said. Concerning the price and concrete setup. He told me that Derek will reply immediately after his conference.

I went to bed as I am in another TZ, thinking that I will get his email during the night.
Morning; NO email. And now the chat is closed until Monday. So I sent an email to "sales", asking in short if gigenet is a serious company or what. FOUR DAYS offline due to attacks!

Mister Ameen Pishdadi kindly replied me right now "We are not interested in working on this project with you as you are not being attacked on the demo account we gave you.

When you have a real attack please contact us."

What is this crap? As soon as we are attacked we are null routed and I promised my hosting company we won't connect the site again without protection!

And gigenet does not sell their program (at $1300 by month, first level!) as a PREVENTIVE action?

I am more than disappointed by this so called "good company". If somebody could tell me an email of a HIGH executive, thank you. Writing to "sales@gigenet.com" will probably be without result.

GIGENET VS. TB10

Nov 1, 2008

how TB10 is VS Gigenet? I have Gigenet as my host and for DDOS protection. Due to the sluggish times, I've been hit hard on my primary income earning sites. Since I am paying Gigenet for both hosting and DDOS protection, my costs have gone up quite a bit. I was thinking of moving my two servers over to TB10. It would considerably save me a nice some of money. I only have one question. Is TB10's service (hosting and DDOS protection) as good as Gigenet?

Its mainly a pricing issue. I'd cut around 1500 a month in hosting costs.

Dedicatednow Or Gigenet

Nov 25, 2008

Im currently hosted with Staminus, I left dedicatednow in the past because of the way they handled the ddos attacks, if they were too big they would just give up very easily.

Thats not something I was ok with. Im wondering now if maybe things have changed or where I should go? I am currently with Staminus but they are too over priced for me. I want to move to a nice 8 core somewhere else that I don't have to tack on hundreds more just to stay online.
