UK Web Hosting 500MB Space 1GB Bandwidth Existing .org.uk Domain

I'm the webmaster for a church website: stpetersbraunstone.org.uk and our domain & hosting renewal is coming up, so I'm looking to see if there's a better deal.

We're with namehog.net (and have been for 2 years with no problems at all) on their Professional package. The renewal fees are 105GBP (web hosting) + 5.90GBP (domain name) + 17.5pc VAT to cover the next 2 years, which comes to 130.31GBP.

The site is powered by WordPress, so PHP and MySQL are needed. And we upload lots of photos, so need at least 250MB webspace I'd have thought. So far, our highest monthly bandwidth usage has been under 800Mb, and our visitor numbers are increasing and our highest monthly figure so far was 401.

Any recommendations gratefully received. There seems to be many different companies out there who offer what I want, so I'm after some personal recommendations please.

I've already used this site to discount streamline.net due to bad reviews.
I'm looking at fuzioned.com and redfoxhosting.co.uk - any thoughts?
I've also come across no-wires.co.uk - has anyone had any good or bad experiences with them?

And yes, I have submitted my details to the "request quote" thing.

Low Space And Bandwidth, Reliable Hosting
I am planning to create a website for my business. Its a bulk exports business and there will be very few visitors, less than 1000 a month. Also space needed should also not exceed 100 mb as I will only have some html information pages and a few pictures of my products.

However, the webhost should be reliable and have an easy to use interface as I am a beginner in this field (I hear cPanel is good). Also I have 2 more domains/businesses which I hope this same hosting should cover so it should have addon hosting.

Please recommend a reliable hosting provider with a good interface and price under $25 per year.

The registrar I will be using for the domain is Namecheap as I am planning to register a .in (India) domain name and very few have that option.

Shared Host <$5/mo - 10+ Addons, 1gb+ Bandwidth
I tried to put as much as possible into the title

I've had asmallorange for like 6 years now, was great host but lately uptime seemed to suffer a bit. Searching for some new one to try.

Could You recommend a cheap less than $5/mo shared hosting?

What I need:

highest uptime available, 99.8 or above would be great
use more than 10 websites with them, addon domains feature.
bandwidth above 1 gig, maybe above 5, not sure.
support doesn't matter that much, cause I almost never ned to contact them, lol
another thing I'd prefer is to use company's details in WHOIS info - that's really kind of important. Don't like Godaddy's $10 service. Just don't want to pay.

32 Or 64bit & Existing Domain Net Vs New Domain
delving into a new server, a dual opteron w/Centos. Got two questions as I think about setup.

1) 32 bit or 64bit?

2) Regarding host names and server assignemt...I can either assign it as a node to a domain hosted elsewhere in a reseller account, or I can start with a completely unused domain which is currently parked.

Any preference, in an ideal world?

(I have absolutely no preference, but it occurrred to me it may or may not be of consequence, perfomance & IT-wise and generally speaking .. all things being equal, of course.)

Like I said, a newbie. So I'm braced for the if-you-have-to-ask, you-shouldn't-be-in-one" musings for these rather basic boneheaders.

Web Hosting That Specializes In High Bandwidth
I have a dedicated server currently hosted over by Aplus.NET

I have a 3000 GB Monthly Transfer limit and we have been going over this limit for the past few months. This has resulted in a large sum of overage fees.

I am looking to go to another hosting company that is just as good as Aplus.NET, if not better... with a better traffic rate. A friend told me about Choopa.com and I wanted to know how good of a company they were. What are some other top reliable hosting companies with premium servers and that specialize in unmetered bandwidth?

Creating Web Hosting Accounts/asigning Bandwidth
The first thing i'm thinking of is cpanel but there's many others If you're runing a server with 5000gb traffic/bandwidth per month When you're creating hosting accounts, could you allow 5000gb in
each new account you're creating?

Like if you had unmetered, you'd put unmetered in every new account Considering no account would ever reach any way near their monthly allowance.

Web Hosting Domain
I just got hosting with a company called Netfirms (netfirms.com), and I gave it my domain name(destinyislands.com) that I purchased from godaddy. However, destinyislands.com will not redirect to the actual pages that I have uploaded to netfirms. The only page that will work is destinyislands.netfirms.com(a crappy subdomain). I just signed up about 30 minutes ago, so maybe I need to wait for the domain to register into the system, but I feel like I got ripped off. Anybody have any idea of if I just need to wait, and then the regular domain will work?

Review: Maximum-Hosting.org - Horrific Experience
this is my experience with Maximum-Hosting.org.

I went there for the low prices to startup my Shoutcast station. At $3 a month, it sounded too good to be true. I got my service, and the owner, seemed like a nice guy. He was very helpful, and was eager to help me get started. This was back in March. The first half of my stent there was great, however, in the last half, downtimes and even a data loss was getting on my nerves. I saw some really personal issues and arguments in the IRC server about the owner and staff, and even some back talk and really personal stuff that I wish I never had heard.

Because of the downtime, the owner did provide me with some free service and features. In these times, I was itching to leave, but the owner lured me back in with something better.

In this time, the service was 'okay', no real big complaints, I was even promoted to an IRCop, on the server.

Four things happened.

1) There was an incident in the chatroom with a regular joke we have done may times was taken really the wrong way. (I did not use my IRCop powers when this happened)

2) After a long outage (last night from 'this' post date), I was the only human on the irc server. In order for me to ask the owner what happened, I silenced a eggdrop bot by banning it from the main room. This was so I can get a new message notification when a real person enters the room. The bot posted every 2min, and it was at 2am in the morning.

3) I actually found a pretty big security hole in the control panel, the owner thanked me yesterday, and was furious the next.

4) because of the top three things, the owner basically got extremely mad and took away my IRCops.

Those 4 things basically were the last pieces of trash I could take. Yes, I forgot to unban the bot I mentioned in #2, but is that a good reason to get me out? Tonight, after a somewhat heated discussion with the owner, my account was instantly closed, all http/ftp pipes closed. I am very lucky I saw the owner start to fall into this cycle he seems to do, I had a full backup of the space I had.

In a nut shell, I would highly advise people NOT to use Maximum-Hosting. If you want low prices, frequent downtime, and the possibility your data could be gone in an instant, this is the host for you!

I can only hope no one else falls into the nightmare I have had to put up with for cheap hosting.

50+ Existing Customers Using Shared Hosting...
What should I do ?

Dear Site Point , im looking for some advice on which steps I should now take with my online business which really needs SEO performance to be the best it can but with my current hosting situation and existing customers using a live system things might be complicated.

Im using a hosting company in Europe to run UK Based websites which I have read makes no difference to SEO aslong as you use the Google webmaster tools and define the location. The hosting company offers the use of adding multiple domains to one account which I currently have about 50 so in theory 50 sites are using the same IP Address , I have just read that sites with backlinks to the same IP Address gives your site a big ' 0 ' for SEO backlink results, is this true ? so having " website designed by " has no effect on each of your clients pages.

I have looked into to becoming a reseller on a UK based hosting company but the problem is my customers use one master SQL database for all the products as all my customers even though different businesses all sell similar types of products so they all use the same SQL tables as it made no sense setting up a seperate database for each customer on the same hosting , each customer uses a shared control panel with sessions so everything is secure.

So Should each customer have a reseller hosting account with a seperate database / domain etc which could be a security risk as potentially they could resell the website software.

or

Keep the virtual overseas hosting (cheaper) and keep all my customers on one account and purchase a dedicated ip address for a primary domain that I sell from to try and boost SEO back links ?

or.....maybe someone could advise something better ? more stable ?

Why are existing customers less important?

Unlimited Space And Bandwidth For 4$
while looking for a host I've found that there are many hosts that offer unlimited web space and unlimited bandwidth for very little money like 4$ per month and there are also expensive web hosts that offer limited but big webspace and high bandwidth for much more money. What am I missing here? If a big website like yahoo decides to buy that 4$ per month host and move there, what would happen? Would the bandwidth really be enough and not slow down? If it wouldn't carry yahoo then why do they say it's unlimited? I'm confused because I've heard about people spending thousands of dollars for big websites every month.

Need 1000GB Disk Space/200TB Bandwidth?
OK so I've been in the hosting industry a very long time now and I have noticed that overselling has got more and more crazy over time. 7 years ago, 2GB of disk and 10GB bandwidth was considered overselling. Today, its common to see offers at 1000GB/1000TB.

So my question, to all you looking for web hosting, do you really think you will need all that space and bandwidth?

I'm going to let you in on a little secret. (Some might hate me for this!) Out of all my customers, 99% use less than 1GB disk and 5GB transfer.

Every hosting provider out there knows this, and will tack on a bunch of 0s to their offer to make it look more enticing . The thing is, if you aren't using the space, you aren't getting any extra value. If you come even close to the amount they offer, I am willing to bet you will be suspended faster than you can blink. This advertising tactic is very misleading and a lot of newcomers base their decision off the meaningless numbers they see. <<Snip>>

Bloggers - Think again if you believe you need anything more than 1GB of space. You could type blog posts until you are blue in the face before you come close to using 1GB(unless you incorporate a lot of videos and images)

Forum owners - Considering most forums are text based, forums use hardly any bandwidth. If you run a highly active forum, eventually you will start consuming decent amounts of disk space. However, there is no way that a shared host would allow such a forum to exist on the servers. You will be shut down before you use even a fraction of that 100gb/1000tb.

What should you consider than? If you see a host offering such impossible amounts of resources for an even more impossible price, look elsewhere. If you want a decent service, look to spend $5-10/m for a reasonable amount of disk space and bandwidth.

Host That Doesn't Lie About Bandwidth Space?
I am sure this thread was most likely created before but I haven't been able to find anything on the particular host I just had an issue with.

It goes like this.

I've been through web hosts ever since 1998. I've grown accustomed to web hosts deceiving their customers by listing '20 gigs of BW use, or 'Unlimited BW' (which we all know is BS) but for the past few years, I actually had a host who didn't lie about how much BW their customers got with the packages. I signed up for a 20 gig BW account with HostVector and I've used up to 19 gigs and they have never said a single word. I left them recently because they were bought out by Millennium Services and ever since then, its been a nightmare. Constant down time, tech support nowhere to be found. Sadly to say, I had to leave that host due to fact that their new owners have no clue what they are doing.

I found ELIEF and thought they looked promising. I signed up for the package that listed 20 gigs of BW, now at first I thought okay.. this may be fishy, but if this was a flake, they would have specified that customers really won't get 20 gigs of BW.

Regardless, I trusted them the way I trusted HostVector. Seeing how I am a musician, I uploaded a 80MB pack and sent it to some friends to download and not even a 12 hours later. My account was suspended because it apparently caused their server to crash?

I checked the stats and only 68 users downloaded that 80MB file.

This is beyond aggravating. I know there are countless web hosts who lie about this type of stuff but why cant at least specify someplace on their page a more detailed info about bandwidth usage? Maybe put an asterisks next to the BW section like some hosts do and explain that what is listed there is not the reality.

So here I am, my domain is suspended. My fans/listeners/friends are wondering what happened and I am sitting here angered beyond belief because I thought this type of lying was something that hosts stopped doing in the late 90s.

Any recommendation guys? Does an honest web host who actually offers the same amount of BW they list on their hosting packages, exist anywhere?

one more detail is that the folders need to be protected with login and password because people may try to enter this folders (e.g. www.mydomain.com/protectedfolder)

Secure Web Space Costs
I'm working for an organisation which is looking for a company who can provide us with a public website to be updated with a CMS and 132 secure areas which should be accessible from that public website.

Today I was sent a proposal by them stating that there would be a cost per year of:

£3,350 for data storage areas of up to 20mb space per secure area (i.e. £25 per secure area)

£6,700 for data storage areas of up to 75mb space per secure area (i.e. £50.70 per secure area)

We really would prefer much more space per area than this (upwards of 2GB per area) and are a bit wary of how much is being charged for the storage space.

I have three questions on this :

1) How do these prices compare with other hosts that you know of? Are they reasonable?

2) Is this 'secure space' much more expensive than normal space?

3) Are there hosts that offer unlimited secure space for reasonable prices?

Btw, these are the facilities that this host provides:

6 redundant Internet connections
24x7x365 onsite support
Fire protection
Backup power generators
Daily back up to magnetic tape media
Anti virus protection for all uploaded content
Industry Standard Cisco firewalls

It would be only 1-2 gigs, so I might get away with it anyway on most hosts, but would like to avoid problems in the future. Dreamhost offers both SVN and rsync, which I'd like a lot, but they clearly forbid such use.

And, I do have an external hard drive and very important files are also on DVD and memory stick, but since I need to purchase webhosting I'm looking at this extra option too.

Fast Webhost, Little Disk Space, With Php, Mysql, Phpmyadmin, And Alot Of Bandwidth
The most important requirement is that the webhost must be fast. It must have alot of bandwidth.

The disc space is not so important. 200 MB would be enough.

It must have PHP, MySQL and phpmyadmin installed.

Must be accesable through FTP.

There are offcourse more requirements. But the main thing is that i want it to be fast.

My pages will be only informative and exists of just mainly text and an image every now and then.

Do you know any fast webhosts that is good to handle websites with large amounts of visitors?

I'm looking for something around 6 dollars per month.

I dont know much about webhosting at all, so i'd appreciate any help i can get

Also i see websites where you can register a domain. But the prices vary, isn't a domain just a domain? What makes this price difference?

Shared File Space For All Web Servers
Is it normal practice to have shared filespace that multiple web servers can access? Then I just provide my developers access to that filespace (one server, instead of multiple users on multiple servers) to manage files for different sites easily... right? So.. what would be the best way to do this? We're talking Linux systems here by the way. What sort of specs would such a server need?

I *think* it's NAS that I'm trying to get at.. unsure though if that's correct or not!

From all the forum messages reagrds this event its apparent that a lot of hosting companies are suffering the worst from having their support websites at the DC where they host their customers and have no way of notifying their customers of whats going on.

Web Hosts Dedicated Server Bandwidth
Every web hosting company I've seen has a certain amount of monthly bandwidth for a dedicated server. For example, one hosting company offers a dedicated server with 10TB of bandwidth per month.

Question is, why don't web hosting companies offer 2 monthly bandwidth options like International and Local? Local bandwidth costs alot less than International bandwidth.

So for example, a web host based in the USA should have a Dedicated server with 10TB Local monthly bandwidth and 10TB International monthly bandwidth.

Can't hosting companies detect where the dedicated server is being accessed from?

They provide hosting for as low as $1 per month and this was the reason I thought to host with them just like thousands of other users who have hosted with them.

I was stunned to see that my domains hosted with them has doorway subdomains with adverisements and malware.

I checked my cpanel and amazingly there were actually no sub domains in cpanel.

Those subdomains were actually created secretly through DNS entries by 3ix.org so that they can serve advertisements and malwares without being caught by

HOSTING USERS.

So I did a Reverse DNS lookup and found that all domains hosted by them are suffering from the same issue.

They are cheating their users and now all the sites hosted with them are in danger as this will be considered as spam by Search engines and all sites can be

banned anytime.

I would strictly advice to stay away from this web hosting company....

2mhost.com - Web Stress Testing To Use Up Bandwidth Quota?
I was just curious as to whether anyone has ever came across a situation where your monthly bandwidth/transfer quota is being consumed at an exponential rate without any increase of traffic to the site?

My current situation is this.

I have an account 2mhost and a monthly bandwidth transfer quota of 100,000 MB. For the past few months it's been steadily growing. When I first transfered the site to this host their cheapest package quota wasnt sufficient and I ended up with a bandwidth overage error page on my site, so I had to upgrade. In doing so I've always ended the month just shy of 80% total quota.

My problem is that it's only the 17th, and a few days ago i was at about 32%, now im at 51% with no increase of pageviews. Looking into awestats shows the alexandria2.2mhost.com using 30 gigs!! I questioned the tech support via live chat and they said it was wordpress accessing the images. This was fixed in ~24 hours, and then I had access. I struggled with the limited RAM, and OS, so I changed to Ubuntu and queried about cost to change RAM amount - decided not to and just used apache to run 4 websites.

Day 3 - 21st August 2009

System goes down, "Seemed like your ssh was not running; rebooted your vps now it looks good.", not quite sure on this - as I am quite experienced with *nix, and I dont see why "it wasnt running" but apache was. I suspect there was some routing problems somewhere, but eitherway, it was back up after approx 6 hours of non-ssh downtime.

Day 11 - 29th August 2009

Had some issues in the days previous - saw some threads here on WHT. Still decided to upgrade to premium - as was going to be running a demanding MySQL server. Payment taken on 4th September for upgrade, and all was OK!

Day ?? - 19th-21st (?) September 2009

Servers all went down, cubic host lost their IP range. Thread on forums somewhere about it. new IP allocation email received on ~24th, 2 days downtime, host unreachable.

October 3rd 2009

My VPS vanishes completely, along with all the data. IP resolves to a new server, with fresh apache install. I am unable to log into root. Their billing system had "messed up" during my upgrade:

Hey,

The billing system say invoice #196 which was issued on 04/09/2009 is unpaid so the system automatically terminated your VPS after a period of non payment. I will confer with my partner that this invoice was in fact paid and will re activate your account.

Regards,

Gray F.
CubicHost.org

They responded by saying my VPS had been setup again

I created your VPS manually. And for the inconvenience can give you 2 months from this date FREE. Then you will not get an invoice until December 2nd

But, sadly, no backups had been kept on their end, and none of my websites or data was recoverable.

I was digging around and couldn't find any backups anywhere. The billing system did a good job of terminating, unfortunately.

What I could do is provide you hypervm panel access where you are able to configure backups and such. Like I said, you have 2 months from today, on the house; if you wish to use them.

you have full reboot access, can change your hostname, and all sorts of the like

Cubichost.org - Innovative Solutions

October 12th 2009

Requested to close account obviously - as I had nothing left there now! Account appears to have been closed - could not log into cubichost.org, or their ticketing system - just email chains left.

October 18th 2009

Cubichost take a $5 payment from my account.

Dear Mr A P Ross,

You sent $5.00 USD to Cubichost for a subscription payment.

-----------------------------------
Payment Details
-----------------------------------

Subscription name: Mr A P Ross
Transaction date: Oct 18, 2009
Transaction time: 05:40:22 PDT
Funding source: Credit Card
Subscription number: XXXX

exchange rate for this purchase is 1 GBP = 1.59235USD

I am not quite sure why they have charged me after my account has been closed, but eitherway, it's only $5.

Overview

Cubichost whilst appearing cheap, and offering what at first may be a good service, in my experience has struggled with reliability and providing a good, consistent service. They managed to give me ~7 days downtime with no-proactive communication (all communication was my-end first noticing service was down), and then deleted all my data due to "a billing issue".

They finally, charged me $5 after my account was closed, for what I am not quite sure, but I dont fancy the effort of chasing.

3ix.org - What A Disappointment!
A few words of warning.

I came across 3ix by googling the net. Compared it to a few others and thought, hey, they're cheap. I'll host my site with them. They offer a US $ 1 dollar package (minimum 6 months subscription) for a small site and US $ 3 package (minimum 6 months subscription). I chose the US $ 3 a month subscription which equals US $ 18 a month. The reason I chose the $3 package over the $1 package is because I was and still am pretty cluelesss as to how to design my site and the $3 deal came with a site builder called "Click Be" and templates. Nice templates. the only problem I could neither edit existing buttons in the menu nor remove them. I e-mailed 3ix.org about the problem and got no answer. I visited Click Be's authors, a company in the Nehterlands and indeed on their forum I discovered that others were discussing and complaining about the same problems they had with Click Be. A few replies as well from the Click Be authors on that same forum confirming that indeed the buttons in the menu can neither be edited nor removed and that they're working on a newer version of Click Be site builder. Fair enough. however, this wasn't described anywhere on 3ix's site and none of 3ix sales staff had told me about this flaw. 3ix's site builder Click Be was touted as the latest and most powerful site builder on the net. they also advertise money back guaranteed within 2 weeks if not satisfied. I have e-mailed them at least 5 times before the 14-day trial period ended asking them to either fix the problem or arrange for a refund. Never heard from them again. Cheap does not necessarily mean good. I was duped by 3ix.org. Buyers beware!

1GB Ethernet Vs. USB 2.0
In terms of storage, which will provide faster data transfer?

1. A NAS (e.g. Lacie or Thecus) with 1GB port connected to a gigabit switch

2. An external storage that uses USB 2.0 interface

3. An external storage that uses eSata inferface.

Assumption:
All of it use sata drives under a raid 5 configuration.

Hosting Considerations For Space Resale
I've coded a small blog / file management system that I'd like to charge for space after 25mb (or so). In looking for hosting what should I consider? Will most hosts allow me to resell space like this? Will they even notice? What about when I need more space? Backups?

Jailtime.org Xen Images
Has anyone here gotten any of the Xen images from jailtime.org to work on CentOS? I've figured out what the heck I'm doing since my last question [url], but they still won't boot. And the more I Google it, the more people I find asking the same questions.

It looks like they're depending on a bunch of non-standard images in their initrd, and, unless we have some of these unknown modules, the darned thing won't boot. Mine ends up failing like this:

Code:
NET: Registered protocol family 1
NET: Registered protocol family 17
Using IPI No-Shortcut mode
XENBUS: Device with no driver: device/vbd/2049
XENBUS: Device with no driver: device/vbd/2050
XENBUS: Device with no driver: device/vif/0
md: Autodetecting RAID arrays.
md: autorun ...
md: ... autorun DONE.
VFS: Cannot open root device "sda1" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
The xen.conf for this particular VM:

Code:
# This points ta real Dom0 kernel!
kernel = "/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-53.1.13.el5xen"
memory = "256"
name = "Ubuntu-Matt"
vif = [ 'mac=00:01:02:03:04:07, bridge=xenbr0, vifname=vif1.0' ]
# Set the disk...
disk = ['file:/home/matt/vms/ubuntu-7.04/ubuntu.7-04.img,sda1,w', 'file://home/matt/vms/ubuntu-7.04/ubuntu.swap,sda2,w']
root = "/dev/sda1 ro"
This is driving me bonkers... Has anyone gotten these to work? Would I be better off just installing from an ISO?
