I've coded a small blog / file management system that I'd like to charge for space after 25mb (or so). In looking for hosting what should I consider? Will most hosts allow me to resell space like this? Will they even notice? What about when I need more space? Backups?

WIndows Server 2008 VPS Setup Considerations
I've just purchased a Windows Server 2008 VPS plan with a hosting provider. With that I have needed to open up several ports - 21 (FTP), 25 & 110 (Mail) on Windows Firewall. My first question is about security on those ports. So far I've just opened them in Windows Firewall and that's it. Is there anything in particular I should consider to keep those ports secure? I've also had to install a mail server. So far I've installed the standard version of MailEnable and have it running fine. The problem I see is that the standard version has no spam filtering and no virus checking. So I did some more looking into all this and found SmarterMail, the free version. The thing that gives this potential comes straight off their site... "SmarterTools understand what it is like to be part of a growing company. Budgets are tight, and often money is not available for software expenses.". This is exatly where I'm at, a small business with no software budget, at least not for now. After looking into it, it appears as though we would have to pay for spam/virus protection when using MailEnable, because this is for commercial use (Maybe there's some free spam/vrus software for MailEnasble I'm not aware of), but we would have that included with SmarterMail. As an added note, this VPS facility is for a single domain and I realise that SmarterMail only allows for 10 accounts, but we can live with that for now. Does anyone have real world experince using MailEnable vs. SmarterMail in this kind of scenraio? If so, from experience, what do you think is the best option?

Low Space And Bandwidth, Reliable Hosting
I am planning to create a website for my business. Its a bulk exports business and there will be very few visitors, less than 1000 a month. Also space needed should also not exceed 100 mb as I will only have some html information pages and a few pictures of my products. However, the webhost should be reliable and have an easy to use interface as I am a beginner in this field (I hear cPanel is good). Also I have 2 more domains/businesses which I hope this same hosting should cover so it should have addon hosting. Please recommend a reliable hosting provider with a good interface and price under $25 per year. The registrar I will be using for the domain is Namecheap as I am planning to register a .in (India) domain name and very few have that option.

Web Space Storage Or Get Additional Space From Another Server
im running out of space on one of my sites but i have more then plenty of data transfer. Unfortunately my hosting packaged it weird where they provide not enough hd space. Im trying to figure out is there a way where i can use another server or hosting company that can provide space only and use their servers just for space? i think amazon.com offered this but wasnt sure how exactly this works.

UK Web Hosting 500MB Space 1GB Bandwidth Existing .org.uk Domain
I'm the webmaster for a church website: stpetersbraunstone.org.uk and our domain & hosting renewal is coming up, so I'm looking to see if there's a better deal. We're with namehog.net (and have been for 2 years with no problems at all) on their Professional package. The renewal fees are 105GBP (web hosting) + 5.90GBP (domain name) + 17.5pc VAT to cover the next 2 years, which comes to 130.31GBP. The site is powered by WordPress, so PHP and MySQL are needed. And we upload lots of photos, so need at least 250MB webspace I'd have thought. So far, our highest monthly bandwidth usage has been under 800Mb, and our visitor numbers are increasing and our highest monthly figure so far was 401. Any recommendations gratefully received. There seems to be many different companies out there who offer what I want, so I'm after some personal recommendations please. I've already used this site to discount streamline.net due to bad reviews. I'm looking at fuzioned.com and redfoxhosting.co.uk - any thoughts? I've also come across no-wires.co.uk - has anyone had any good or bad experiences with them? And yes, I have submitted my details to the "request quote" thing.

Hosting Space For You "H.S.4.U" Is A Scam
BEWARE! of this company or operation: "Hosting Space for you" are definately crooks and a scam. After they got my yearly subscription, my account was activated for 3 weeks and then it disappeared. I mean LOST, not able to login, sites down, etc... 4 weeks of writing to their support resulting only in one automated reply that I will be contacted soon.

UK IP Space
Does any know of any UK companies who do public IP space? aka putting a request into RIPE for some IPs (with justification). We only need a class c and we cannot justify the fees of joining ourself to RIPE. Getting IPs from our current provider isnt possible as we want our own IPs so if we ever moved away we could take the addresses with us without having to change.

Portable IP Space?
The last time I applied for a portable block from ARIN was about 7 years ago, and it was pretty easy to get when you could justify a /22. I'm just about to begin this process with my current company. Right now we're using a a /24 and 2x /23's from 3 different providers, and are hoping to get a portable block from ARIN. Basically needing a /21, do we stand a chance of getting a portable block, or are we still stuck getting our prefix from one of our providers?

Route My IP Space
what is needed is a dedicated server or colocation in which my portable IP space (a class c assigned to me in 1995) can be routed to in its entirety. We will then have a VPN back to our own site. This could be accomplished by the ISP BGP peering, or simply announcing the routes themselves. We've got clue in routing, both in OpenBSD and IOS. The machine doesn't have to be too powerful, and needs little storage space, but the bandwidth provided has to be decent. This is for a hobbyist rather than commercial project, so price is an issue.

How Is It A Waste Of Space
I'm starting to get annoyed with companies stipulating that is it considered a waste of space to store your own files, and backups or whatever on your shared hosting account. I don't understand why that is considered a waste of space you purchase that space and bandwidth. So why can you not use it for whatever you want in legal terms. In fact I would be confident to say I have not seen a single terms of service NOT state that you cannot use your space as storage.

VPS Space Available
I have a 30gb vps which I only have used about 6gb. This 6gb is a live site so if that means anything. I want to take 15gb of it and use it for personal ftp storage where I can access it at work and via at home so I don't have to always copy things to media discs. My question is that will doing that and just leaving 9gb give or take on my live site affect performance or anything.

Where Is All My Disk Space Used
I have a server with cpanel/WHM. Difference Of Used Space Between Du -hs And Df
I have a partition /dev/sda2 which is mounted to /webroot. Today, I find that I can't upload any files via IPB (running on lighttpd) So, as usual, I went on SSH and tried df in order to see how much space is left on the server: Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on <deleted> /dev/sda2 20641788 19483292 109856 100% /webroot Since lighttpd is running inside chroot, I thought it was the log files but even after I deleted them, it is still at 100% usage. Does anyone know how most hosters would handle this situation?A hoster has a customer with a certain config, let's say 2 servers and a firewall This customer anticipates growing, perhaps later in the year, and will likely add a number of servers In an effort to avoid migrations within the DC, does the hoster reserve space in the rack? Would the hoster charge the customer for said reserved space? I'm just wondering what standard practice is, if there is one.

Why So Little Disk Space
I've got a server in a local colo facility. both the facility and my server are slowly falling apart. Rather than investing in hardware and then shipping it to some location and hoping it doesn't break, I've decided to investigate VPS. What I am finding is puzzling me. Why do providers charge so much for disk space? My current old p3-733 has a 30gb drive, I could deal with about 15gb but with some 'flex' room (i.e. a virtual drive for uncompressing files or some such). It's a personal server for me and a couple of friends, it doesn't get much traffic, I don't need a heck of a lot of bandwidth, nor anything flashy, just Ubuntu 8.04. I see places offering plenty of traffic for a decent price, yet little in the way of storage. I just don't get it. A year ago I was here wanting to trade my class C for a dedicated server. I realize now that it would be pretty difficult for providers to do this, because if I wanted to yank my class c they'd have to renumber. But if anyone is still interested, let me know.

Where To Get FTP Space
I read an offer from a company a month or so ago that offered some plan where you were given a certain amount of space on an ftp server. I'm not sure if it was hosting as well or just ftp space. Then each month you paid $5 or something and for as long as you have your account with them they give you and extra 5-10GB per month. So your space on the server grows with your needs. Does anyone know the company? I can't find it anymore but I'd like to take another look at them.

Saving Space With Rsync
Just wondering if you guys had any resolutions to this. We are looking to save space on our rsync backups. I know you can use the --compress, or -z and it compresses data on the fly to save bandwidth but is there anyway to keep the data compressed so it takes up less space once it is on the server and still make it so it only copies over the file changes? If not, anyone have any suggestions on how to save space with rsync backups?

Unlimited Space And Bandwidth For 4$
while looking for a host I've found that there are many hosts that offer unlimited web space and unlimited bandwidth for very little money like 4$ per month and there are also expensive web hosts that offer limited but big webspace and high bandwidth for much more money. What am I missing here? If a big website like yahoo decides to buy that 4$ per month host and move there, what would happen? Would the bandwidth really be enough and not slow down? If it wouldn't carry yahoo then why do they say it's unlimited? I'm confused because I've heard about people spending thousands of dollars for big websites every month.

Disappearing Disk Space

Unknown Space Consumption
my friend has an un-managed VPS plan in kloxo-hypervm mode yesterday the stats showed in hypervm as the space was over used, so I personally deleted the processed stats which cleared around 20gb space, again today the space is totally consumed, I don't know why its happening and have no clue where are the other locations where the space could have been consumed i.e similar to location of logs or any other specs which could have been consuming space unknown space consumption - very high no idea how! its actually an image hosting site and I noted that not many pics and not much space was consumed in the pics uploaded in the last 24hrs but this really puzzles and troubles me as I am currently tracking my friend's VPS, please help me sort this out problem and keep my head high before my friend

Need 2 Sites To Share Space
for my inexperience and lack of techno speak... With my last hosting company I was able to buy another domain, but use my existing web space I was using for a different domain, so I didn't need to purchase more web space as what I had was plenty for both my sites. This was a feature that I was able to select from as part of a bonus offer. With my new host, I can not see this feature (whatever you may call it) and when I asked my hosting company about it, they just said 'yes, we can park domains'...maybe they didn't understand my question, because I don't think I'm parking it. Companies That Sell IP Space
Are there companies out there that we can purchase IP's from? We might be moving data centers in 6 months and I am sick of asking my customers to always change their IP's every year. Are there companies that we can purchase an IP block from and then carry those over to different data centers? I am looking for something like a /26. We currently have (2) /27's with our data center right now, but I would prefer a single /26 to keep all our IP's in the same range. I've looked at trying to get them from ARIN, but the minimum they want to sell is a /22. Also, how easy is it for data centers to announce your own IP space?

5GB Space Lost
We delete LOGS. We delete QUEUE mail. After we add up all the space of the counts. space of count1 + space of count2 + space of count3 + ... ALL COUNTS And TOTAL < to 2GB included MySQL space But space used (say Vistuozzo), is 8.47 Gb! How we can understand this? Ok, maybe 2 GB of CENTOS + cpanel + WHM+ MySQL + Files config = 2 GB Home + MySQL = 2GB 4 GB is very different to 8.5 GB! Ok think in 3 GB of SO+WHM+CONFIG add 2 GB of files this = 5 GB

Disk Space Keeps Growing
I get this message from the shared Apache server (I have a reseller account and host about 50 sites) where one of my sites is and it says the site is almost out of space. I only have it at 60 megs because the site itself is about 20 to 25 megs, so this should be plenty of room. So, I emailed my hosting company and they say it's the 'analog' web statistics folder that keeps getting bigger, n bigger causing this issue. I told them that I only use Awstats and they said "If you don't want to use 'analog' web statistics you can delete "tmp/analog" folder" So, my question is this...how do you delete the "tmp/analog folder"?

VPS Space Constraints
In a VPS package, the space designated, say 20 GB... contains all OS files, Control Panel files, and other utility files. and it will be say 25% of the space remains for data .. I mean for the /home/ folder/.. I wonder if someone has done any research on space taken by different OS's and CP's. Since for me, who cant afford to pay more to get more space, space allocated/remaind for my /home folder matters a lot lot. Also, for example, if the the monthly/weekly/daily backup is enabled, then the space for home folder becomes almost half! I would like to hear any advice to choose the best combination of OS/CP and the Backup settings, to get the maximum of spaces in the homefolder, say on a VPS package of 25 GB.

My Consumed Space Is Keep Increasing - Do You Know Why
I have bought a hosting from new hosting company. I have total 5GB space wherein I can host unlimited domains. When I uploaded my files ( for 4 sites ) I saw that I have used total 16 MB. But today when I logged in there I noticed that the cPanel shows that I have used total 22.75 MB But I didn't upload anything that may take upto 6MB space I just uploaded few images that may take maximum 100KB. My hosting provider said this "The extra disk space could be email messages stored on the server, mysql database files, etc... All these things are accounted for within your disk space." But I replied that I don't use any database and I don't have any single email in my account so how that space can by consumed? Waiting for their further reply.

Expandable Disk Space
With a VPS account from the various VPS providers out there, you can always add more disk space to your VPS. This is done in realtime without having to take the VPS down or anything like that. What kind of storage mechanism is used for this? Is it possible to use such a storage method on a dedicated server? I just think it would be advantageous in some dedicated server offerings to be able to continue to add disk space to a server without having to physically replace the hard drive.

RAID 1 Setup / More HD Space
I have a Red Hat 8 server with RAID 1 setup and now I need more HD space. I managed to replace both 40 gb disks on the raid array with 200 gb disks and the system stayed perfectly alive, BUT I still have only 40 gb of space available (and 160 gb of space somewhere hiding). Is there a method on Red Hat 8 to get the rest of the disk in use? At first I replaced another 40 gb disk with a new (empty) 200 gb disk and then on the raid setup I mirrored the old disk with the new disk. After that I replaced that another old 40 gb disk with a new 200 gb disk and did the mirroring again. Got both new 200 gb disks working on the RAID 1 array, except that little problem with space available on Red Hat 8..

Does anyone know why Disk Space needs to be entered in both 'Clients' & 'Domains' in Plesk? I don't understand how that works... If I set up a client template and make this 250MB Disk Space, and then set up a new Client using this template... Next I attach them to my Domain template where I have given them unlimited Disk Space... What will they have 250MB or Unlimited?

Swap Space For VPS
I have purchased several VPS from a provider and found they do not provide swap space with VPS, and even with 256MB ram, I get 'out of memory' trying to compile a perl library... Creation of a swap file by myself doesn't work (operation is not permitted). Hosting providers runs HyperVM. So the question. Is it common or is it a misconfiguration? For now I got just 'checking on this for you' and three days of silence from their support. I'm not opening hosting provider name, but I will if they say "You must pay for more RAM", just because other 5 VPS providers support my VPS servers with swap space.

Space In Colocation Facilities
Perhaps some of you who run colocation facilities could help me with the following questions 1) How many of your customers running applications on upwards of 30 servers use regular clunky server towers as opposed to nice 1U servers? I ask because from a cost standpoint it's important to consider deploying an application on commodity hardware as opposed to expensive blades or other tiny servers. But I'm wondering if for large and growing applications that use upwards of 30 servers in total the savings in hardware purchase would be offset by the colocation facility space required by regular server towers or other large servers? 2) Also, in a rack configuration I know how the servers would be laid out. But with regular server towers, how would these be laid out within the cage? Can they be stacked, or would that not be viable because they're a lot heavier, and each server probably needs room to breathe due to heat generation. 3) What's the industry-standard pricing model for colocation? Is it based on a number of square feet, a number of cages, a number of rack units, or something else? How does this play in to the use of regular server towers?

Ping No Buffer Space Available
i have a custom setup, front end, that serves the apache requests, and a remote SQL Server. the SQL traffic runs on the internal network. the front end runs freebsd 6.2, and apache 2.2 with php 5.2.5 the sql server runs centos 5.1, and mysql 5.0.45 tonight, i found that my website was not working, i logged in, and i saw that when i tried to ping the internal network, i had that error: ping No buffer space available i was trying to ping the sql server, from the front end. the sql server worked fine, i could ping other servers in the internal network, but the front end's internal card allowed no traffic. I tried restarting the internal network card, state up/down, did not solve the issue.
