Nothing On Server - 500mb Of Ram Used

I have an empty dedicated server, with plesk installed.

What surprised me was it was using 500mb of ram, when nothing was installed, no websites.

Code:
Mem: 2073912k total, 526132k used, 1547780k free, 28800k buffers

what is consuming the memory?

Uploading 500MB Tar.gz File In Telnet
I am having trouble uploading a 500mb file with File Manager in the control panel as well as SmartFTP. I was told to upload this large file through Putty. I able able to login through SSH as root, but i can't seem to find the right directory to upload this file into. This file is a backup file of the home directory. I am transferring all files from my old host to my new host. How would I find the right directory and upload this file through Telnet.

Shared Hosting RAM Vs Virtual Private Server (VPS) RAM
I have a reseller shared hosting plan that allows for 50 sub-accounts and I'm using about 20. I am looking at getting a VPS with between 256 - 394 mb RAM and am wondering if I were to move all of my accounts to the new VPS would I be ending up with less RAM to use for all of my sites.

To put this another way how do most reseller plans manage RAM usage? Do each of my sub-accounts have access to say 64 mb RAM so that if I were to use all 50 sub accounts I would have access to 50*64 mb.

From what I've experienced and read with shared hosting my thought is I could end up with less access to server resources, CPU and RAM, with a VPS plan - though with VPS the resources are more guaranteed rather than being dependent on the usage of other accounts on the server.

The reason I am looking at a VPS account is that I have a site that will likely have 1000s of users with a server intensive script (Moodle) and I know it would violate the reseller account agreement. So maybe my plan should be to keep the reseller account and use it for my database driven sites and use the VPS for the server intensive site and my html based sites.

Also, my VPS choice seems to be narrowed down to Liquidweb, JaguarPC and Zone - has anybody heard of any negative experiences with Liquidweb? I can't find any.

UK Web Hosting 500MB Space 1GB Bandwidth Existing .org.uk Domain
I'm the webmaster for a church website: stpetersbraunstone.org.uk and our domain & hosting renewal is coming up, so I'm looking to see if there's a better deal.

We're with namehog.net (and have been for 2 years with no problems at all) on their Professional package. The renewal fees are 105GBP (web hosting) + 5.90GBP (domain name) + 17.5pc VAT to cover the next 2 years, which comes to 130.31GBP.

The site is powered by WordPress, so PHP and MySQL are needed. And we upload lots of photos, so need at least 250MB webspace I'd have thought. So far, our highest monthly bandwidth usage has been under 800Mb, and our visitor numbers are increasing and our highest monthly figure so far was 401.

Any recommendations gratefully received. There seems to be many different companies out there who offer what I want, so I'm after some personal recommendations please.

I've already used this site to discount streamline.net due to bad reviews.
I'm looking at fuzioned.com and redfoxhosting.co.uk - any thoughts?
I've also come across no-wires.co.uk - has anyone had any good or bad experiences with them?

And yes, I have submitted my details to the "request quote" thing.

Is 256MB Of Ram Enough For A Server
I am searching for a new webhost, as my current one has been having ongoing problems for the last year or so.

I am considering this plan at hostmysite.com:
[url]

However, it says that it uses 256MB of ram ... is this enough? It's just that it sounds low to me, but I don't know much about server configuration. I willing be hosting 12 sites there right away, and adding as time goes on.

Difference Between RAM And Burstable RAM?
What is the difference between RAM and burstable RAM?

What even is RAM!

I ask because I upgraded my server (again) today. I went from 256 RAM, to 512, now to 1024 of RAM. Is 1 gig of RAM good?

Also, I want to know in general if I am getting a good deal here

I have a VPS now with these specs:
Dedicated RAM: 1024 MB
Burstable RAM: 4096 MB
RAID 10 Disk Space: 100 GB
FREE Backup Space: 100 GB
Premium Bandwidth: 4000 GB
Dedicated IP Address: 2
Monthly Price: $119.99

does that seem like a good deal to you?

I ask because I am new to all of this, and don't know if I am getting jipped.

Should a site on this server run fast, if it is a high traffic "tube" site?

Server Has 7 GBs Of Free RAM
Current server has 4 GB ram, all buffered by linux.

Code:

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 4054 3917 137 0 99 2139
-/+ buffers/cache: 1678 2375
Swap: 4094 0 4094

The buffer has 2375 MB of free ram. However this is a heavy mysql server. I want the empty ram be used by mysql so it becomes faster.

We are currently moving to a 8GB ram server, and the free ram will be around 7 GB if we use the exact same configuration. I want the free ram to be 1 GB at most, why pay for 8 GB ram if I'm going to use a fraction of it?

What optimizations should I attempt?

I know about harddisk I/O bottlenecks, I have two SATA drives in the system, and a SAS drive dedicated to mysql, that's all we can afford currently.

All mysql databases are for SMF forums, and currently using MyISAM tables. Switching to another storage engine is a possibility, if it won't create problems in restarts and hot backups.

Subversion Server RAM Usage
I have a low traffic VPS, with fairly limited resources (most notably only 256mb RAM).

This runs fine for what's currently being hosted - one low traffic site (with 1-10 users on at any time, usually 2 or 3), and several other essentially dead sites. Everything runs smoothly, and generally RAM usage remains below the 200mb mark.

However, I've been contempating setting up a Subversion server on the same VPS, and I'm unsure if this will top it over the limit. Does anyone here have any experience running a SVN server? How memory hungry is it? If I do set this up, it won't be very active, with a couple of checkouts a day, and a max of 2 or 3 users connecting at any one point, more often than not no one will be connected. Can I do this with the resource limitations listed above, or should I start looking at alternatives?

RAM Usage: Dedicated Server Vs. VPS
I have never rented a dedi before but have used and continue to use VPS for my websites. With a hostinabox VPS with lxadmin control panel and apache for web serving I have seen idle ram usage at around 100MB. My question is am I going to see a similar amount if I move to a dedicated server ? I ask this because I remember reading somewhere that dedis have a higher RAM usage by the OS compared to VPS. So does a dedi at idle use more RAM than a VPS at idle?

Optimizing MySQL On A Busy Server (4 Gigs Of Ram)
it's getting to the point where I need to optimize MySQL to better handle a busy server.

These days it seems MySQL is using 30% - 60% CPU almost constantly. But, the good news is that I've got 4 gigs of ram on this box and their seems to be an access of 600mb free constantly throughout the day.

Is it possible to tweak MySQL to a little more RAM dependent and take some of the load off the CPU? It seems MySQL wont go over 300mb of ram at any given time.. I'm already working on optimizing the SQL Querys on the web page itself.

CPU Load Low, Server Slow, Need More Ram
My server gets 300 - 600 concurrent connections to http port 80, has a CPU load of 1 - 2%, has practically all RAM of 1 GB used, is running apache 2 and centos 5.

It tends to get slow and when I ban IPs that use many connections to my server (raping it), it becomes fast again. But soon after that new ******* users come which I again ban and the process repeats itself

I'm starting to think that maybe I just don't have enough RAM to handle them because it seems at least some of those users are legit. I don't however have even that much content that needs to be cached so I'm not sure what good RAM would do but perhaps apache just needs more.

I have a question because I am a bit confused. On one of our servers we needed more RAM.

So we ordered RAM from our provider and we paid. After 3-4 hours i get a reply the ram could not be added. (No explanation given)

The server can handle 32GB ram and currently has 16GB. We added 8GB more but this is what they said:

"
The server will not post with anything over 16GB, even though the board supports up to 32GB.

Why cant the motherboard handle more ram when it supports up to 32gb...

As my application will be frontended by a CDN, network quality is somewhat less of an issue. Reliability and price is. So who be good a choice for machines with lots of RAM? (almost obviously, AMD, Intel uses FB-DIMM and I am not inclined to pay through my nose for that) I guess WebNX is one,

VPS: What's Using All My RAM
I'm running a vB forum (runemart.com), and my VPS has the following specs:

~666MHz CPU
512MB RAM
CentOS 5.3 64-bit
DirectAdmin

In my VPS control panel, it's saying that I'm using around 350MB to 450MB RAM - this is 24/7, it never goes below 350MB. At the moment all I'm running is a vB forum, that doesn't have many memory consuming plugins (such as no shoutbox at the moment).

Is it normal for a vB forum to use so much RAM? Is there any way that I can find out what's using the RAM?

More RAM Or Better CPU
We currently have a server with the following specs at ThePlanet

* Intel Xeon 3060 Dual Core Conroe (2.4Ghz)
* 146GB, 10K RPM SCSI/SAS Hard Drive
* 2048 MB RAM

and have recently started to get a lot of problems with the server. The server is deicated to one website with a vBulletin forum. When we're reaching around 5-600 concurrent users the server starts to slow down and the load skyrockets (100+).

Some quick stats from phpMyAdmin (just restarted the SQL server):

This MySQL server has been running for 0 days, 0 hours, 7 minutes and 23 seconds.

Query statistics: Since its startup, 15,001 queries have been sent to the server.

Totalř per hourř per minuteř per second
15 k121.90 k2.03 k33.86

As you can see, the mySQL server is the one thats struggling the most.

What should we do at this point... Do we need to go for a better processor and/or just get 4GB RAM?

MySQL = How Much RAM
I'm trying to understand, generally, on a Hybrid VPS with 1gig guaranteed/4gig burst- for small sites that might be installing stuff like Wordpress, a Forum, Joomla!, etc., how many MySQL databases this system can support.

I realize traffic would be a major factor but for discussion sake lets assume an average of 50 users for each db with a peak of 100 users.

Just trying to get a 'rule of thumb'. Wondering also, how much RAM (resources?) an idle db consumes.

VPS And Ram
for either VPS or dedicated hosting for a few websites (a mix of Wordpress, Joomla and custom Ruby on Rails). Traffic is likely to be low to medium.

I'm confused about memory on VPS. Most of the ones I've seen start at 128MB going up to about 512MB (at prices approaching those of dedicated servers). Now, to me, that all sounds woefully low for a server. If I was getting a dedicated server I'd be looking at a gig at least. Is there something I'm missing?

I've seen reference to guaranteed versus burstable memory. I presume burstable means my server can take up to that amount for a short time but only if it happens to be available on the host - no guarantee. Given that traffic to my sites is likely to be bursty should I be paying more attention to the guaranteed or the burstable level of memory?

I'll be running Linux, Apache, MySQL BTW.

root@server [~]# top
top: error while loading shared libraries: libproc-3.2.3.so: failed to map segment from shared object: Cannot allocate memory

But I keep getting the errors.

What could I do when this happens? Is there any commands where it specifically shows you the amount of ram each process is running?

4 Gb RAM Limit
I have a server with the following specs:

2 x Xeon 2.0 Ghz
4 x 2 Gb DDR RAM (8 Gb total)

I am trying many OS's but none of them worked as it should:

- Windows 2000: install aborted
- Windows XP: install aborted
- CentOS 4.4: install OK but Kernel panic on start-up
- CentOS 3.8: instal OK, only 3.8 Gb identified but the OS out of 8 Gb
- CentOS 3.8 64 bits: couldn't install, CPUs support only 32 bits

Add to this, the machine boots on EL Kernel on CentOS 4.4 but not on the SMP Kernel!

how I could run this machine on Linux with 8 Gb RAM?

Cpanel And RAM
I’ve been reading several posts about cpanel vs. directadmin and the difference in RAM usage.

I understand that cpanel is a resource hog that uses more RAM... so here is my noob question...

How and when does this have an impact on my site visitors?

Meaning...

1. Does this ONLY have an impact on ME while I’m using the control panel? Or..

2. Does this impact my visitors ONLY if I’m running/using my control panel at that moment? Or...

3? Does this have an impact on my visitors all the time regardless of my control panel usage at the moment?

Vps Ram
How should I know if my VPS is getting the promised amount of RAM?

Does the top command tell me?

PHP Code:

top - 23:46:31 up 7 days, 19 min,  1 user,  load average: 0.33, 0.21, 0.08Tasks:  18 total,   2 running,  16 sleeping,   0 stopped,   0 zombieCpu(s):  2.7% us,  0.3% sy,  0.0% ni, 82.2% id, 14.8% wa,  0.0% hi,  0.0% si,Mem:   4136952k total,  4090732k used,    46220k free,   600796k buffersSwap:  2096472k total,      800k used,  2095672k free,  1554344k cached  PID USER      PR  NI  VIRT  RES  SHR S %CPU %MEM    TIME+  COMMAND 3139 lighttpd  15   0  8996 3208 2148 S    4  0.1   0:00.16 php 3143 lighttpd  16   0  9828 3236 2176 S    1  0.1   0:00.47 php 3140 lighttpd  15   0  9332 3156 2104 S    1  0.1   0:00.04 php    1 root      16   0  2840  668  572 S    0  0.0   0:00.38 init

Now here it indicates only 46mb memory is free. I'm not using any memory since the VPS is not hosting anything. Am I wrong or the provider is overselling the server?

Ram On A Vps
I'm currently hosting a bunch of small sites on a VPS with serverforce.net with 64mb ram. I'm no longer living in england, and I'm thinking about moving to a provider closer to my new home (Toronto). I've had a look around and I'm thinking about going with future hosting.

I'm looking at their unmanaged no control panel vps which would be similar to what I have now. I'm deciding between 2 packages, the silver package with 128mb ram for $14.95/month and the pearl package with 256mb plus an extra 128mb (they have an offer on) for $19.95 a month.

My fiance says the extra $5 is a waste because I don't need that much ram, and I think for an extra $5 I might as well have it, everyone always says the more ram the better.

(He thinks I should host on his home server with his bog standard DSL connection)

I'm planning to run ubuntu 7.04, lighttpd, php5, sqlite (same as I have at the moment).

My sites are mostly text, very few images, no video or anything. At the moment I have low traffic, but I'm starting to build web apps which will hopefully bring more traffic and will use more databasey stuff.

How To Check Ram
Let's say I have a VPS with 512 MBs of RAM.

How do I check in shell that this is indeed the case?

I read in some places that "top" and "free -m" and such can help.

But these gave me way more than 512.

Here is the output from my "free -m". Total shows here 3886 MBs of MEM??? That is almost 4 Gigs. Please someone explain this.

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3886 3721 164 0 17 542
-/+ buffers/cache: 3161 724
Swap: 6142 2020 4121
