Unlimited Space And Bandwidth For 4$
while looking for a host I've found that there are many hosts that offer unlimited web space and unlimited bandwidth for very little money like 4$ per month and there are also expensive web hosts that offer limited but big webspace and high bandwidth for much more money. What am I missing here? If a big website like yahoo decides to buy that 4$ per month host and move there, what would happen? Would the bandwidth really be enough and not slow down? If it wouldn't carry yahoo then why do they say it's unlimited? I'm confused because I've heard about people spending thousands of dollars for big websites every month.

Unlimited Space And Bandwidth ...?
Unlimited space and bandwidth... totally lying?

I bought hosting with unlimited bandwidth, space, domain, etc. A few days ago I install script to sell photos. So I upload huge of photos and maybe eat their bandwidth and space. And today my account is deleted without any warning! I tried to ask this but no answer yet.

Is the Unlimited space and bandwidth is totally lying??? But why even hostgator selling the unlimited features?

UK Web Hosting 500MB Space 1GB Bandwidth Existing .org.uk Domain
I'm the webmaster for a church website: stpetersbraunstone.org.uk and our domain & hosting renewal is coming up, so I'm looking to see if there's a better deal.

We're with namehog.net (and have been for 2 years with no problems at all) on their Professional package. The renewal fees are 105GBP (web hosting) + 5.90GBP (domain name) + 17.5pc VAT to cover the next 2 years, which comes to 130.31GBP.

The site is powered by WordPress, so PHP and MySQL are needed. And we upload lots of photos, so need at least 250MB webspace I'd have thought. So far, our highest monthly bandwidth usage has been under 800Mb, and our visitor numbers are increasing and our highest monthly figure so far was 401.

Any recommendations gratefully received. There seems to be many different companies out there who offer what I want, so I'm after some personal recommendations please.

I've already used this site to discount streamline.net due to bad reviews.
I'm looking at fuzioned.com and redfoxhosting.co.uk - any thoughts?
I've also come across no-wires.co.uk - has anyone had any good or bad experiences with them?

And yes, I have submitted my details to the "request quote" thing.

Limited Versus Unlimited Bandwidth
I am having trouble working out which host to choose for a new project.

I usually opt for Webmania or Heart Internet - they are excellent providers but Webmania now applies a bandwidth cap that may be too low and Heart's cheapest package does not provide sub-domains. I can't be sure whether 12GB will be big enough for a site that will contain galleries of high-res images (I have no prior experience with caps and traffic predictions are impossible at this time) and to get sub-domains from Heart means a £90 per year package (too much).

Streamline is one of the few good-value providers that do not cap bandwidth, but I have concerns about the effect that this may have on server speed given that it is bound to attract the kind of sites that are really heavy on bandwidth. This point was mentioned in an article recently.

If I take the last option, will I be hampering the performance of my site?

Low Space And Bandwidth, Reliable Hosting
I am planning to create a website for my business. Its a bulk exports business and there will be very few visitors, less than 1000 a month. Also space needed should also not exceed 100 mb as I will only have some html information pages and a few pictures of my products.

However, the webhost should be reliable and have an easy to use interface as I am a beginner in this field (I hear cPanel is good). Also I have 2 more domains/businesses which I hope this same hosting should cover so it should have addon hosting.

Please recommend a reliable hosting provider with a good interface and price under $25 per year.

The registrar I will be using for the domain is Namecheap as I am planning to register a .in (India) domain name and very few have that option.

Need 1000GB Disk Space/200TB Bandwidth?
OK so I've been in the hosting industry a very long time now and I have noticed that overselling has got more and more crazy over time. 7 years ago, 2GB of disk and 10GB bandwidth was considered overselling. Today, its common to see offers at 1000GB/1000TB.

So my question, to all you looking for web hosting, do you really think you will need all that space and bandwidth?

I'm going to let you in on a little secret. (Some might hate me for this!) Out of all my customers, 99% use less than 1GB disk and 5GB transfer.

Every hosting provider out there knows this, and will tack on a bunch of 0s to their offer to make it look more enticing . The thing is, if you aren't using the space, you aren't getting any extra value. If you come even close to the amount they offer, I am willing to bet you will be suspended faster than you can blink. This advertising tactic is very misleading and a lot of newcomers base their decision off the meaningless numbers they see. <<Snip>>

Bloggers - Think again if you believe you need anything more than 1GB of space. You could type blog posts until you are blue in the face before you come close to using 1GB(unless you incorporate a lot of videos and images)

Forum owners - Considering most forums are text based, forums use hardly any bandwidth. If you run a highly active forum, eventually you will start consuming decent amounts of disk space. However, there is no way that a shared host would allow such a forum to exist on the servers. You will be shut down before you use even a fraction of that 100gb/1000tb.

What should you consider than? If you see a host offering such impossible amounts of resources for an even more impossible price, look elsewhere. If you want a decent service, look to spend $5-10/m for a reasonable amount of disk space and bandwidth.

Host That Doesn't Lie About Bandwidth Space?
I am sure this thread was most likely created before but I haven't been able to find anything on the particular host I just had an issue with.

It goes like this.

I've been through web hosts ever since 1998. I've grown accustomed to web hosts deceiving their customers by listing '20 gigs of BW use, or 'Unlimited BW' (which we all know is BS) but for the past few years, I actually had a host who didn't lie about how much BW their customers got with the packages. I signed up for a 20 gig BW account with HostVector and I've used up to 19 gigs and they have never said a single word. I left them recently because they were bought out by Millennium Services and ever since then, its been a nightmare. Constant down time, tech support nowhere to be found. Sadly to say, I had to leave that host due to fact that their new owners have no clue what they are doing.

I found ELIEF and thought they looked promising. I signed up for the package that listed 20 gigs of BW, now at first I thought okay.. this may be fishy, but if this was a flake, they would have specified that customers really won't get 20 gigs of BW.

Regardless, I trusted them the way I trusted HostVector. Seeing how I am a musician, I uploaded a 80MB pack and sent it to some friends to download and not even a 12 hours later. My account was suspended because it apparently caused their server to crash?

I checked the stats and only 68 users downloaded that 80MB file.

This is beyond aggravating. I know there are countless web hosts who lie about this type of stuff but why cant at least specify someplace on their page a more detailed info about bandwidth usage? Maybe put an asterisks next to the BW section like some hosts do and explain that what is listed there is not the reality.

So here I am, my domain is suspended. My fans/listeners/friends are wondering what happened and I am sitting here angered beyond belief because I thought this type of lying was something that hosts stopped doing in the late 90s.

Any recommendation guys? Does an honest web host who actually offers the same amount of BW they list on their hosting packages, exist anywhere?

Hosting With Un(limited) Bandwidth
I've always used German hosts because they are much cheaper than my homeland Greek alternatives, the latency (70ms Germany vs 30ms Greece) is bearable.

Until recently I used Strato single cpu dedicated servers, which allowed me 2000gb at 100mb/s. Although I came close, I never actually reached that 2000gb allocation.

Ever since moving to 1und1 (to a quad core) the server's speed difference has attracted more visitors and pageviews. Now my bandwidth usage has gone to 3000gb per month and at peak it requires 20-30mb/s.

The problem is that 1und1 limits you to 10mb/s if you go over 1000gb, and then requires 'resetting' it every 250gb in order to get back to 100mb/s speed.

Does anyone know of a european host that offers truly unlimited bandwidth? Every time I hit the 10mb/s limit, my pageviews go down, users leave the site.

I've contemplated writing a simple heartbeat script that polls the control panel every 5 minutes and checks if the limit has been crossed, at which it will automatically reset it for me.

i activated the disk quota to the native linux file system and i tried to create a user but i could not put this user in any folder in the public_html (i dont know how to do this) also there is no option to create bandwidth quota..

one more detail is that the folders need to be protected with login and password because people may try to enter this folders (e.g. www.mydomain.com/protectedfolder)

all this using webmin or another free good script.

Shared File Space For All Web Servers
Is it normal practice to have shared filespace that multiple web servers can access? Then I just provide my developers access to that filespace (one server, instead of multiple users on multiple servers) to manage files for different sites easily... right? (also meaning multiple servers can serve the same content)

So.. what would be the best way to do this? We're talking Linux systems here by the way. What sort of specs would such a server need?

I *think* it's NAS that I'm trying to get at.. unsure though if that's correct or not!

Fast Webhost, Little Disk Space, With Php, Mysql, Phpmyadmin, And Alot Of Bandwidth
The most important requirement is that the webhost must be fast. It must have alot of bandwidth.

The disc space is not so important. 200 MB would be enough.

It must have PHP, MySQL and phpmyadmin installed.

Must be accesable through FTP.

There are offcourse more requirements. But the main thing is that i want it to be fast.

My pages will be only informative and exists of just mainly text and an image every now and then.

Do you know any fast webhosts that is good to handle websites with large amounts of visitors?

I'm looking for something around 6 dollars per month.

I dont know much about webhosting at all, so i'd appreciate any help i can get

Also i see websites where you can register a domain. But the prices vary, isn't a domain just a domain? What makes this price difference?

Web Hosts Dedicated Server Bandwidth
Every web hosting company I've seen has a certain amount of monthly bandwidth for a dedicated server. For example, one hosting company offers a dedicated server with 10TB of bandwidth per month.

Question is, why don't web hosting companies offer 2 monthly bandwidth options like International and Local? Local bandwidth costs alot less than International bandwidth.

So for example, a web host based in the USA should have a Dedicated server with 10TB Local monthly bandwidth and 10TB International monthly bandwidth.

Can't hosting companies detect where the dedicated server is being accessed from?

Is Really Bandwidth Unlimited In Some Hostings

End of the day, I was asking for a VPS solution. My God! they do not have any VPS or dedicated server solution at all.

Why the hosting companies just buildup their advertisement. And why should they offer what they cannot provide. And their strength I still see is.. they are still saying to me that they are hosting is Unlimited Bandwidth, Unlimited Disk storage.

Secure Web Space Costs
I'm working for an organisation which is looking for a company who can provide us with a public website to be updated with a CMS and 132 secure areas which should be accessible from that public website.

Today I was sent a proposal by them stating that there would be a cost per year of:

£3,350 for data storage areas of up to 20mb space per secure area (i.e. £25 per secure area)

£6,700 for data storage areas of up to 75mb space per secure area (i.e. £50.70 per secure area)

We really would prefer much more space per area than this (upwards of 2GB per area) and are a bit wary of how much is being charged for the storage space.

I have three questions on this :

1) How do these prices compare with other hosts that you know of? Are they reasonable?

2) Is this 'secure space' much more expensive than normal space?

3) Are there hosts that offer unlimited secure space for reasonable prices?

Btw, these are the facilities that this host provides:

6 redundant Internet connections
24x7x365 onsite support
Fire protection
Backup power generators
Daily back up to magnetic tape media
Anti virus protection for all uploaded content
Industry Standard Cisco firewalls

It would be only 1-2 gigs, so I might get away with it anyway on most hosts, but would like to avoid problems in the future. Dreamhost offers both SVN and rsync, which I'd like a lot, but they clearly forbid such use.

And, I do have an external hard drive and very important files are also on DVD and memory stick, but since I need to purchase webhosting I'm looking at this extra option too.

Looking For A Dedicated Server With 3-4 TB Of Space For ~100 USD A Month
I'm looking for a server with 3-4 TB of disk space and moderate traffic requirements (1.5-2 TB a month will suffice).

CPU, RAM do not really matter.
Location: EU or US.
Price: ~100 USD a month with some setup fee or ~120 USD without.

So far I found OVH's SP Storage (http://www.ovh.co.uk/individual/products/superplan_storage.xml) which offers 4 x 1.5 TB RAID0/1 drives for a total of 3 TB disk space. However I can't register with them and their sales did not react quickly enough yet to help me.

Is there anyone else with similar offerings with whom you have personal experience?

Premium Bandwidth And Service
Seems like some of the more premium colo's out there will only do full racks or higher. And to me, "premium" are companies like equinix, savvis, and iland.

We are coming from managed servers at Rackspace and are used to a pretty awesome support level. While reliability and uptime are the most important to us we also need a great service level.

Anyone have any recommendations on any Colo's that provide that sort of premium bandwidth, data center and service but also does half-racks?

Hosting Considerations For Space Resale
I've coded a small blog / file management system that I'd like to charge for space after 25mb (or so). In looking for hosting what should I consider? Will most hosts allow me to resell space like this? Will they even notice? What about when I need more space? Backups?

Shared Unmetered Bandwidth
I got a question about shared unmetered bandwidth offerings. Currently we specialise in Dedicated Unmetered bandwidth offers but also offer metered.

we see an increase in demand for shared unmetered, with some minor guarantees of troughput. Much in the style of FDC servers. We are toying with the idea, to add a shared unmetered service thats overbooked 1/4 (100 mbit) or 1/6 (gigabit).

The questions.

1.
Are these overbooking rates reasonable? it looks like other companies roughly have these overbooking factors.

2.
What kind of hardware should be bundle with such an offer? obviously its the bargain hunter category (no pun intended) that we would try to appeal to. Would that mean generally lower end servers like ATOMs?

Unlimited Domains With Shared Hosting Vs. Reseller Hosting
This question gets asked a lot in our Helpdesk and I figured I would post our knowledgebase article here to help anyone else wondering the Pros and Cons of Unlimited Domain Shared Hosting vs. Reseller Hosting. If anyone has anything else to add, I appreciate any feedback on how we can improve our KB article.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Given the present state of shared hosting, many clients may ask "Why would I need a Reseller account if I can host unlimited Addon and Parked domains within a single shared hosting account?". There is certainly enough Disk Space and Bandwidth provided in many of today's hosting packages, so why bother to purchase a Reseller account?

Many don't realize the drawbacks of hosting large numbers of domains within a single hosting account until they've already packed tens of them onto a single package.

So how do you know whether a Reseller account or Shared Hosting account is right for you? The answer is in how you plan to provide access to others and how "mission-critical" the sites are. You should consider the following factors when deciding on hosting a large number of domains:

1. Who will be managing these sites?

2. How important is site security between sites?

3. Will these domains need dedicated SSLs?

4. How resource intensive will these sites be (RAM, CPU, MySQL)?

In a nutshell, Reseller plans are for those who wish to host websites for other sub-clients and a shared hosting package is for a single individual managing multiple personal domains. We'll go over the 4 points above in greater detail.

1. Who will be managing these site?

If you personally own multiple domains and wish to host them within the same hosting space, you can easily do so with an Addon or Parked domain. An addon domain will allow you to host a new domain within a subdirectory of your hosting space. A parked domain will allow you to have multiple domain names point to the same content. Since addon domains reside within the same user space as your main domain, you can manage all of your domains with a single login. You can see the problem if you want to provide another user with access. Since all accounts are managed with a single set of login credentials, if you give another user access to their addon domain you are also giving them access to your main domain. If you have vital information stored on your main domain and you are hosting another domain as an addon domain for someone else, you cannot provide them access to their hosting without compromising the integrity of your main domain.

When hosting sites as a Reseller, your clients in turn will want access to their account and will want exclusive rights to their disk space and server resources. With a Reseller account, each sub-account you create gets its own username, password, and isolated user space on the server. Individual clients of yours have access to their user space and their user space alone. In addition to the isolation with regards to access concerns, each account also gets their own cPanel access. All of the same great features that you use to manage your sites can also be given to your clients. Next time client Y wants to add an email account, you don't have to do it for them for fear of giving them access to your cPanel, you can simply give them their login details and they can manage their own email accounts.

2. How important is site security between sites?

This is along the same lines as point 1. This is not necessarily related to who you are hosting for, but what content you are hosting. Imagine that you are a webmaster and you are hosting your own personal site-in-a-box community forums (such as PHPBB or vBulliten) on your main domain and a company website for a paying client on an addon domain. It is not uncommon for popular scripts to have security flaws in older versions. Script authors will often update security flaws in later versions of their software. For this reason, it is very important to keep scripts up to date on your site. But let's assume you forget to update your scripts for a couple of months and an unscrupulous individual takes advantage of a well known security hole. Using this exploit, they gain access to your forums and any subdirectories. Since you are hosting another domain as an addon, they now have access to this domain's content as well. A site defacement on this company's site may not bode well for you when they are considering you for web master services in the future.

If these two domains had been separate into two individual users (i.e. two subaccounts created through a Reseller), their content would've been inherently isolated server side by Linux's user management. Sure, your forums still would've been affected by the security hole, but the break-in would've been isolated to your site alone.

Going back to our example, let's say that instead of a corporate website as an addon domain you are hosting an image gallery site for all of your cats. In this case, it may not be a big deal if a compromise in your main domain spreads to your addon domain. After all, they are both owned by you and you're only losing some time and effort to restore these sites from your local backups (which I'm sure you've actively maintained ). But then again, you are losing time and time is money. If these sites had been separated into individual users, again, you'd only have to restore one site's content.

The idea here is isolation. Reseller plans provide you with the peace of mind to know that if one of your users doesn't keep up with their site's content as actively as they should, their actions won't negatively impact the content hosted on other domains. If you and those you host in your addons are diligent webmasters, maybe this point won't have much bearing on your decision. Only you can say for sure.

3. Will these domains need SSLs?

As of this writing, SSL certificates must have a dedicated IP address to be installed. If you are hosting multiple domains on the same shared hosting package, you can still install an SSL (or purchase a dedicated IP address and install one) but you are limited to exactly one SSL on your account. If you are hosting multiple domains on the same package (and consequently the same IP), you must choose which domains gets to have the dedicated SSL.

Sub accounts of Resellers can each be placed onto separate IP addresses and, as a result, can each have their own dedicated SSL installed.

Of course, both shared accounts and Resellers' sub accounts can use the server's shared SSL free of charge. However, some clients prefer to see their domain in the URL bar when they visit https.

4. How resource intensive will these sites be (RAM, CPU, MySQL)?

We've already established that disk space and bandwidth will be no problem. But what about CPU, RAM, and MySQL resources?

It's important to be aware of the resource needs of your website. As administrators, we have to make sure all users "play nice" on the server. We can't have user X eating all of the CPU cycles computing pi to the trillionth decimal place while you are trying to serve web pages to your loyal visitors. We have to monitor the actions of all of our users and in the event someone is stepping beyond the bounds of acceptable resource consumption, we have to take action. In most cases, this entails disabling the abusive script, but in extreme cases we have to suspend the abusive user account to prevent other domains from encountering performance degradation on their sites.

If you are hosting 100 domains as addon domains, all serving nothing but static HTML pages, maybe you will stay off the radar.

But considering most sites are more complicated than static HTML, you may want to be aware of how many sites you host as addons and what content they serve. If you're hosting the latest and greatest Joomla modules, with up to date news feeds, integrated forums modules, polls, blog posts, etc your site can certainly require a degree of CPU to serve your pages. Now imagine you have 5 or 10 of these sites all hosted as addon domains. The resources these sites need to generate their content can quickly add up and before you know it you've got a friendly email from Acenet, Inc. in your inbox wondering why your user is consuming 2 of the 8 CPU cores on the server. That may be an exaggeration, but you get the idea. In the event your resource usage becomes so excessive that we have to suspend your user, now all of your sites are down instead of whichever one may be the direct cause of the spike in CPU, RAM, or MySQL consumption.

If each of these had been separate Reseller accounts, the offending account could've been suspended temporarily while we work through the cause, leaving the rest of your domains live and kicking.

The conclusion here is that you need to be aware of the needs of your sites in a general sense. Hosting unlimited domains within a shared hosting space is certainly a nice feature. For those webmasters who have multiple presences on the web, it's very convenient to be able to manage all of their personal domains from a single control panel. For those entrepreneurs who are hosting multiple domains for other individuals, the features and security associated with a Reseller plan and the inherent isolation of Linux users is a must have.

HostGator is offering unlimited disk space, bandwidth and domains in shared hosting BABY Package.

Does it mean i can host 10 domains in baby plan and each site is eating + 200gb per month.

Does 10 Domains hosting in this account mean that they will host using addon technology?
What role dedicate IP will play for my websites?

If my domain registrar is different but my host is hostgator then will this plan will work for me or do i need to transfer all the 10 domains to hostgator?

Unlimited Web Hosting, What's Next
the industry is back to where it was about 8 years ago, when only a few companies offering unlimited were labeled as "scam". Now 8 years down the road, most of the large companies offering unlimited everything, but everyone is ok with it.

What is next? How will the competition go on?

Examples:
Unlimited + Free 2nd Unlimited account.
Unlimited + Unlimited = Unlimited!!
Unlimited + FREE CASH!

How low can these companies go? How will they keep up the competition since there is no more disk space or bandwidth left to compete on. Maybe start free hosting? Start giving out cash to sign up?

If you look at one of those Top 10 hosting web sites, you will see all the companies listed now offer unlimited everything, just different pricing structure. Since they all offer the same thing, wouldn't the person looking just click on the lowest price? Since most people aren't aware of overselling or the unlimited truth, they see it as something that they will never run out of. Average consumer is not aware of these marketing gimmicks.

Honestly if my cell phone provider was offering unlimited minutes for $45 per month, and another one was offering $100 for 1000 minutes my choice would be unlimited. I would even put up with a little bit of crap from the support for $45 unlimited talk time, and a few service outages.

Shared Host <$5/mo - 10+ Addons, 1gb+ Bandwidth
I tried to put as much as possible into the title

I've had asmallorange for like 6 years now, was great host but lately uptime seemed to suffer a bit. Searching for some new one to try.

Could You recommend a cheap less than $5/mo shared hosting?

What I need:

highest uptime available, 99.8 or above would be great
use more than 10 websites with them, addon domains feature.
bandwidth above 1 gig, maybe above 5, not sure.
support doesn't matter that much, cause I almost never ned to contact them, lol
another thing I'd prefer is to use company's details in WHOIS info - that's really kind of important. Don't like Godaddy's $10 service. Just don't want to pay.
