AP7930 - After Power Outage
Apr 2, 2008
I have been reading the manual for a while, and I'm still not quite sure if I can do this with AP7930.
After power outage, I don't want all outlet to power on at the same time when the power is restored. Maybe 30-90 second gap between outlet power should suffice.
for example :
00s - power restored, port #1 on
30s - port #2 on
1m - port#3 on
1m30s - port#4 on
... and so on
The only option I see in the settings is "Power On Delay". I'm not sure if this delay only applies when I submit "On Delayed" action, or does it also apply to when the power from the provider is restored.

my freebsd server suffered power outage and now at boot it shows
BIOS installed successfully!
strike F1 to continue, strike F2 to go to setup utility.
FreeBSD installed
Default 0,a (o.a)boot loaded

On the 30th we experienced downtime on a colocated server in a UK DC we did not know about it till late afternoon
when we finally got to access the server
we found the OS was corrupt
we found 2 of 4 hard drives apparently trashed
we found the backup also corrupt
so can we claim as its a mechanical failure on the DCs end?

how often does a colo provider's datacenter go down? I'm not talking about resellers or their racks, but the primary provider itself.
This has been the 2nd time (this year I believe) that my datacenter at NAC has suffered a complete power outage [url], their backups failed, and my entire rack of servers were power-cycled.
Luckily I am not a web host but I am running some critical public web services/sites. I have all of the equipment to manage my own colocated machines from afar (monitoring, remote reboot hardware, and KVM/IP hardware for all of my machines) but I'm dead in the water if my datacenter's power is out.
I always ease my pain throughout a network outage or power outage by visiting DSLReports. Their HUGE website is hosted in the same datacenter (probably in the same room) as me and while it is a terrible thing to say, being able to share the downtime with a bigger fish is easier for me to handle.

Have an issue that I am dealing with, APC support couldn't really help me get anywhere either.
Here is the story:
I am leasing a rack at Equinix in Sunnyvale.
It came with 3 APC Switched rack PDUs.
By the looks of it, they were used by the previous customer.
APC sent me a serial to RJ11 programming cable, and I have been trying to use HyperTerminal, but I get a blank screen when I attempt to connect.
I have tried arp commands, but, again, it looks like the device was previously configured.
I downloaded this: [url] hyper terminal software.

I have an APC AP7930 which just randomly stopped showing the amperage of the circuit. When I log into the device I see:
Code:
Communication Status
Communication has been lost to the device!
and in the logs see:
Code:
08/26/2007 11:00:53 Switched Rack PDU: Communications lost.
08/26/2007 10:55:21 Switched Rack PDU: Communications lost.
08/26/2007 10:49:39 Switched Rack PDU: Communications lost.
08/26/2007 10:27:58 Switched Rack PDU: Communications lost.
08/26/2007 09:57:58 Switched Rack PDU: Communications lost.
Anyone ever see this on the AP793X series? My next step is to contact APC as think the unit might be under warranty. But it definitely will not be fun to migrate power for the some 20 devices connected to it...
I recently upgraded the firmware and rebooted the management interface several times to no avail. Powering down the PDU is not an option at this point.
This is the first time I've had an issue with an APC product. This isn't a huge issue. But I DO rely on amperage readings to keep from tripping breakers and keep power even among cabinets...

I had a 12 hours outage in one of my VPS. According to the report of my provider, a maintenance task reported an error on the fsck Linux command.
Now I wonder if this error can occur on any RAID hard disk subsystem? Should I stay with this company?

I manage and develop an e-commerce site which the original designer had put on Media Temple. Their grid service and general marketing looks and sounds superb. This is no doubt why a lot of people go with them.
For months now they have been giving my client problems. People in certain places can't access the site because MT are always up to tricks moving the servers around. On top of that their MySQL performance has latency issues which makes most pages load slowly.
I decided to move the site to Knownhost(vps) who seem to offer good service at a reasonable price.
Before I could even begin to transfer the emails to the new server I get reports that the site has been down for over 24 hours. The site is still down after a whole day. This means my client can't sell their stuff and I can't transfer to the new host either.
I called MT and they offered free hosting for a year. I don't think it's worth it. The uptime and service and performance I've seen has been no better than $5/month shared hosting. For a site like this I don't think it's worth risking uptime (and therefore sales) on a company that can't get their act together. I've never had downtime from any other host before, let alone multiple times like MT.
I'm putting this out there just to warn any people who may be thinking of going to Media Temple.
I would be interested to know others experiences with Media Temple.

Anyone else notice the huge outage at Surpass? My sites went down as I was editing one, and checking the server status returns a very, very long list of downed servers. Since the Surmunity Forums appear to be down as well, I was wondering if anyone here had found out what was up via other means, and whether or not there is any estimate on when it might come back up.

I'm kind of annoyed. Not so much the server outage; I know those happen.
What is annoying me is the inability to get anyone on the phone.
I've been calling each of their 4 numbers in succession for the last 45 minutes. Finally connected with someone who has no idea what's going on, only that it is allegedly affecting their entire customer base. Man, if you're not going to answer the phone, at least put on a voice message, or maybe a banner on your Account Manager page.
their site didn't go down, just the ones they are hosting.
I'm a newbie at this so, for the vets, if you are experiencing a server outage, how long do you give your hosting company to give you an answer before getting "assertive" on the phone.
It's not a big deal to me since currently I only use my site for email. However, there must be some folks losing a bit of cash by being out of commission for an extended period of time.

To make a long story short, as a consequence of the outage we lost some of our advertisers, and right now we cannot afford our old server. We decided well in advance to delete our server, so early this week we contacted the customer care and asked when we were supposed to enter the cancellation ticket to have our server removed before the billing date (June 22). We were told to post the ticket on July 19.
We did better than that. We posted the ticket shortly after this first chat. On July 19th, we went into servercommand, to find out that the cancellation ticket was no longer there. I rushed into the live chat, and was told that the ticket was lost because we had not posted it in orbit. Ok then, let me post it immediately in orbit then.
Well, unsurprisingly, Orbit was unavailable in that moment. We told the live chat tech, and basically we were left hanging on the chat for hours until we were able again to access the orbit system. the Live Chat person said she could not enter the ticket for us, so we had to wait for orbit to load for us again.
Well, guess what? Orbit loaded again for us, but exactly after the Midnight, so it was now effectively the 20th, no longer the 19th. Nice, uh? Do I smell something fishy here?
So, I went to the chat today, and here is the reply:
Quote:
Please wait while we find an agent to assist you...

Daniel W: Hello. How can I help you?
Customer: Hello, I need urgent help. It is the third time I am attempting to delete a server, and cancellation is sitll not going through as it should
Daniel W: ok, what is the account id and password? and the reason for cancellation?
Customer: <<snipped>>, H1 outage
Customer: I had sent another ticket more than 1 week agoi
Customer: but it went lost, for some reason
Customer: so I spent two hours a couple of days ago with one of your guys to send this other ticket
Customer: but I see that the cancellation date listed is July
Daniel W: Before I can transfer you to another department, I will need to confirm your account information. Please provide you Orbit/ServerCommand login and the last 4 characters of the password.
Customer: while we wanted an instant cancellation
Customer: <<snipped>> / xxxx
Daniel W has left the session.
Please wait while we find an agent from the Customer Service department to assist you.
You have been connected to Andrew S.
Andrew S: Hi! Thanks for conacting The Planet's Billing Care Team. May I please have your Login I.D. and last 4 characters of your password to Server Command or Orbit please. Please feel free to ask about our promotions
Andrew S: one minute
Andrew S: I am reading you last chaty
Customer: <<snipped>> / xxx
Customer: ah ok
Andrew S: Please give me a few minutes to look into this for you. Thank you.
Customer: thanks
Andrew S: I will have to get my accounting department to review this for you. It has a July date for cancellation because the server cancellation ticket was put in in less than 48 hours from the billing date.
Andrew S: I will have them review this issue for you.
Andrew S: How else may I assit you today ?
Customer: I sent another ticket days before, and it was lost. On July 19 I came to talk about this with one of your techs, and we were unable to access orbit
Customer: They said to wait until orbit was available again for us
Customer: This should all be saved in your logs, I hope
Customer: So, what should I wait for?
Andrew S: I am creating a ticket to the accounting department for them to give you an answer on the cancellation date
Andrew S: ok sir How else may I assist you today ?
Customer: Nothing else, thanks. We will be waiting for the reply.
Andrew S: Thank you for choosing The Planet again my name is Andrew and I hope you have a great day!
Thank you for using InstantService. You may now close this window.
Your session has ended. You may now close this window.
Not bad way to answer a customer who has been with theplanet for 7 years! Not only I am NOT bitching about the advertisers I lost because of the outage, since that's our fault, but I must also go through this strange - not to use another word - issue. I spent HOURS this week just to (not) being able to delete this server. I hope the fact of posting this on WebHostingTalk will help us and others in the future.

do dual power supplies use more power than a single supply?
E.g. Say I have a server than uses two amps, powered by a single power supply. Now if I switch to a dual supply (and say each supply has the same efficiency rating as the single), does my server use more power? How much more?
My simple view of this is that it probably does, but maybe not much. The second power supply consumes some power itself, but since its not under load, it doesn't consume much. Therefore, my server with redundant supplies might use 2.1A or 2.2A.

I just signed my agreement for 2 cabinets at Internap's Atlanta CoLo. For now, I will just have 1 120V 20A circuit in each cabinet.
At my office's server room we currently have 8 circuits I am powering my 2 racks from. I am just curious how many servers you can typically put on a 20A circuit. I am also considering adding two additional power feeds (1 more for each cabinet) to have truly redundant power for my dual power supplies.
I am hoping that 20A is plenty for my needs. I have around 20 HP and Dell systems. Mostly HP DL380s and Dell PE2950s.
Any ideas? I am splitting them in half, only filling up a half of each cabinet for now, as we are growing quickly and I wanted to overguy space so I would not be forced to add another cabinet later and have it end up somewhere else in the DC.

I wonder if any colocation providers here have any tips for measuring power. Currently I'm using APC 7900 power strips with amperage meter. I'm not a power expert by any means but I want to be able to calculate whats the cost having a server drawing 2 amps 24/7 365 days week.
Our secondary site gave us a whopping power bill, and at our own data center we never considered charging our customers for power.

I need to know what happens when a rack has capped its (lets say) 5A limit. I'm trying to calculate what exactly I can put into a rack and am considering that not all servers are going to be 100% load, as that would be bad performance anyway.
I guess it could do the following (but really don't know):
Cap performance of all servers
Cause system failures
Trip
The rack would have servers, a switch and perhaps a Remote Power Strip and Firewall. I don't know how they would be affected.

how much power the average hard drive would use? (ie a 1tb drive). I was looking on WDC's website and it said 7.5 watts peak durring writing and reading etc, so assuming thats at 110 voltage, would it be safe to assume that 12 drives @ 7.5 watts each would make a total of .81 amps? I am going off of the equation that Amps = Watts/Volts. So amps = 90/110

I've been doing research, and looking around on Google for a list of processors that use little power.
What are some of the processors out now a days that have minimal power usage?
Chassis will be SuperMicro's with 1-4 GB ram, if that's of any use.

We are transitioning from an on-site data center to a collocation facility and are having problems negotiating the right amount of power, the type of connections, and the PDU power strips that we need.
For simplicity lets say that we are going to rent a 10 ft by 10 ft cage area. This should house 4-5 rack cabinets.
The amount of power we are given for this area varies with the lowest being 120 watts/sq. ft and the highest being 175 watts/sq. ft.
With 120 watts per square foot that comes out to about 6.25 circuits that are 20 amps for a 10x10 space.
For the initial setup we would have a Cisco 73xx Router, a HP 26xx switch, an Avocent IP KVM, an EMC CX3-10 SAN, and our Dell PowerEdge 2950 III servers (4).
Using the calculator at: dell.com/calc I show the power requirements for all of the Dell equipment to be:
C13 Power Cord Qty: 12
Amperage on C13 Cords: 26.49 amps
System Heat/Power: 2754.6 watts
Total Current: 13.24 amps
The way I was envisioning this was Rack 1: Router, Switching, KVM on a 20 amp circuit and Rack 2: Dell Equipment on a 30 amp circuit. Is that right?
Additionally, I'm confused about single phase vs. three phase power in the data center and what most people choose to implement. I've heard talk of getting redundant power in each cabinet but that seems like you limit yourself to half of your space doing it that way.
And the last thing is it's confusing about what type of PDU you need to put in your racks to make it all come together. All of our equipment should be using IEC C13 cords and we're thinking about going with Avocent for all of the KVM/PDU so we can centrally manage it.
It seems to me that if the cost is roughly the same we should be pressing as hard as possible for the highest watts/square foot since that seems to be one of the most important commodities in any data center.

How much does a typical quad core Xeon eat, say an E5410 or a E7320? a 2GB RAM stick? A 500-750GB SATA disk? How much is the system overhead for a 1U unit? I tried to find data on this without too much success. For example Intel says the same number (80W) for an 1.6GHz CPU and a 2.4GHz one -- that does not sound too reliable to me.
If this is too abstract, then I would like to ask aobut the real world power consumption of two boxes. 1 E5410, 8GB of RAM, 2 SATA disk maybe 10K RPM. The other will have two E7320, 24-32GB of RAM and 3 10-15K disk.

I'm working out the power needs for running two Bc's ( each with 10 blades @ dual 2.8 with dual ide disks, 2x mgmt & 2x 4port Cisco sw ) and am quite frankly going in circles!
The rack will also host a 3550 swith, Vyatta fw ( dl360 ) and a TFT slide out job.
Now using the IBM calc i'm getting figures of around 20amps? Which sounds fair enough for 20servers, but is this correct and would have been better off with a mix of 1u's and 2u's?
Seems the cost saving on the blades will be outdone on the power consumption.. if so that's the last time i watch an IBM tv add!

I have just removed my servers and switch from a data centre in london only to find that for the last 6 months since I last visited the data centre some one has had one of there switches plugged into my power strip. When I approached the provider about this they claimed it would have not affected my charges for power consumption because they were monitoring the power of each server.
Is this possible for a provider to monitor the power for each single server on a power strip that I own? or are they just trying to get them selves out of trouble for the fact they have been over charging me for power for the last 6 months?

I maybe interested in co-locating a server but looking from the power max for a 1U server of around 0.3Amps I'm wondering if it will be easy.
Doing the equation 0.3 * 240 gives me 72watts I believe. (Where 240 is the voltage for the UK). So with this, it doesn't give me much choice considering most processors run around 90watts and that doesn't leave any room for the power from hard drives and memory. Does anyone know what the average power consumption is for hard drives and memory?
I'm not looking for a really power system, but I would like something that if I pull it out of co-location that I can still use it one way or another. So was looking at an AMD Athlon 64 X2 where there is a 34watt version that is seemingly discontinued. Or use an AMD Turion X2, which are again hard to find, with a mini-itx board. Running with the mini-itx board, there is also the Intel Core 2 Duo which I can get quite easily.
Does anyone else co-locate and how to you manage the specification?

at building 10 new servers to sell to our customers as dedis but are I am unsure of how power hungry the processors are.
The two options I am looking at are:
# E6600/E6400 Core2Duo Processor
# AMD X2 Energy Efficant 5000/4800/4600 Range
All the same setups are using just the one harddrive (SATA2 80gb) with 1GB RAM all on a budget motherboard. While I have seen Heavily used Core2Duo systems pull over 0.7amps (with 4gb ram and 2 hard drives) I am unsure which processor setup will use the less ampage. We are running these at 230v so had anyone got any ideas how much ampage these may pull and which would use the least ammount of power?
