Reflections After A 12 Hours VPS Outage

Apr 9, 2009

I had a 12 hours outage in one of my VPS. According to the report of my provider, a maintenance task reported an error on the fsck Linux command.

Now I wonder if this error can occur on any RAID hard disk subsystem? Should I stay with this company?

Media Temple - Outage For Over A Day

May 6, 2009

I manage and develop an e-commerce site which the original designer had put on Media Temple. Their grid service and general marketing looks and sounds superb. This is no doubt why a lot of people go with them.

For months now they have been giving my client problems. People in certain places can't access the site because MT are always up to tricks moving the servers around. On top of that their MySQL performance has latency issues which makes most pages load slowly.
I decided to move the site to Knownhost(vps) who seem to offer good service at a reasonable price.
Before I could even begin to transfer the emails to the new server I get reports that the site has been down for over 24 hours. The site is still down after a whole day. This means my client can't sell their stuff and I can't transfer to the new host either.

I called MT and they offered free hosting for a year. I don't think it's worth it. The uptime and service and performance I've seen has been no better than $5/month shared hosting. For a site like this I don't think it's worth risking uptime (and therefore sales) on a company that can't get their act together. I've never had downtime from any other host before, let alone multiple times like MT.

I'm putting this out there just to warn any people who may be thinking of going to Media Temple.

I would be interested to know others experiences with Media Temple.

AP7930 - After Power Outage

Apr 2, 2008

I have been reading the manual for a while, and I'm still not quite sure if I can do this with AP7930.

After power outage, I don't want all outlet to power on at the same time when the power is restored. Maybe 30-90 second gap between outlet power should suffice.

for example :
00s - power restored, port #1 on
30s - port #2 on
1m - port#3 on
1m30s - port#4 on
... and so on

The only option I see in the settings is "Power On Delay". I'm not sure if this delay only applies when I submit "On Delayed" action, or does it also apply to when the power from the provider is restored.

Surpass Hosting Major Outage

Mar 8, 2009

Anyone else notice the huge outage at Surpass? My sites went down as I was editing one, and checking the server status returns a very, very long list of downed servers. Since the Surmunity Forums appear to be down as well, I was wondering if anyone here had found out what was up via other means, and whether or not there is any estimate on when it might come back up.

Server Outage At Network Solutions

Aug 16, 2008

I'm kind of annoyed. Not so much the server outage; I know those happen.

What is annoying me is the inability to get anyone on the phone.

I've been calling each of their 4 numbers in succession for the last 45 minutes. Finally connected with someone who has no idea what's going on, only that it is allegedly affecting their entire customer base. Man, if you're not going to answer the phone, at least put on a voice message, or maybe a banner on your Account Manager page.

their site didn't go down, just the ones they are hosting.

I'm a newbie at this so, for the vets, if you are experiencing a server outage, how long do you give your hosting company to give you an answer before getting "assertive" on the phone.

It's not a big deal to me since currently I only use my site for email. However, there must be some folks losing a bit of cash by being out of commission for an extended period of time.

Power Outage Caused Damage And Downtime

May 2, 2008

On the 30th we experienced downtime on a colocated server in a UK DC we did not know about it till late afternoon

when we finally got to access the server

we found the OS was corrupt

we found 2 of 4 hard drives apparently trashed

we found the backup also corrupt

so can we claim as its a mechanical failure on the DCs end?

ThePlanet - H1 Outage, Unable To Cancel Server

Jun 22, 2008

To make a long story short, as a consequence of the outage we lost some of our advertisers, and right now we cannot afford our old server. We decided well in advance to delete our server, so early this week we contacted the customer care and asked when we were supposed to enter the cancellation ticket to have our server removed before the billing date (June 22). We were told to post the ticket on July 19.

We did better than that. We posted the ticket shortly after this first chat. On July 19th, we went into servercommand, to find out that the cancellation ticket was no longer there. I rushed into the live chat, and was told that the ticket was lost because we had not posted it in orbit. Ok then, let me post it immediately in orbit then.

Well, unsurprisingly, Orbit was unavailable in that moment. We told the live chat tech, and basically we were left hanging on the chat for hours until we were able again to access the orbit system. the Live Chat person said she could not enter the ticket for us, so we had to wait for orbit to load for us again.

Well, guess what? Orbit loaded again for us, but exactly after the Midnight, so it was now effectively the 20th, no longer the 19th. Nice, uh? Do I smell something fishy here?

So, I went to the chat today, and here is the reply:

Quote:

Please wait while we find an agent to assist you...
You have been connected to Daniel W.
Daniel W: Hello. How can I help you?
Customer: Hello, I need urgent help. It is the third time I am attempting to delete a server, and cancellation is sitll not going through as it should
Daniel W: ok, what is the account id and password? and the reason for cancellation?
Customer: <<snipped>>, H1 outage
Customer: I had sent another ticket more than 1 week agoi
Customer: but it went lost, for some reason
Customer: so I spent two hours a couple of days ago with one of your guys to send this other ticket
Customer: but I see that the cancellation date listed is July
Daniel W: Before I can transfer you to another department, I will need to confirm your account information. Please provide you Orbit/ServerCommand login and the last 4 characters of the password.
Customer: while we wanted an instant cancellation
Customer: <<snipped>> / xxxx
Daniel W has left the session.
Please wait while we find an agent from the Customer Service department to assist you.
You have been connected to Andrew S.
Andrew S: Hi! Thanks for conacting The Planet's Billing Care Team. May I please have your Login I.D. and last 4 characters of your password to Server Command or Orbit please. Please feel free to ask about our promotions
Andrew S: one minute
Andrew S: I am reading you last chaty
Customer: <<snipped>> / xxx
Customer: ah ok
Andrew S: Please give me a few minutes to look into this for you. Thank you.
Customer: thanks
Andrew S: I will have to get my accounting department to review this for you. It has a July date for cancellation because the server cancellation ticket was put in in less than 48 hours from the billing date.
Andrew S: I will have them review this issue for you.
Andrew S: How else may I assit you today ?
Customer: I sent another ticket days before, and it was lost. On July 19 I came to talk about this with one of your techs, and we were unable to access orbit
Customer: They said to wait until orbit was available again for us
Customer: This should all be saved in your logs, I hope
Customer: So, what should I wait for?
Andrew S: I am creating a ticket to the accounting department for them to give you an answer on the cancellation date
Andrew S: ok sir How else may I assist you today ?
Customer: Nothing else, thanks. We will be waiting for the reply.
Andrew S: Thank you for choosing The Planet again my name is Andrew and I hope you have a great day!
Thank you for using InstantService. You may now close this window.
Your session has ended. You may now close this window.

Not bad way to answer a customer who has been with theplanet for 7 years! Not only I am NOT bitching about the advertisers I lost because of the outage, since that's our fault, but I must also go through this strange - not to use another word - issue. I spent HOURS this week just to (not) being able to delete this server. I hope the fact of posting this on WebHostingTalk will help us and others in the future.

Colo Datacenter Complete Power Outage

Jun 22, 2007

how often does a colo provider's datacenter go down? I'm not talking about resellers or their racks, but the primary provider itself.

This has been the 2nd time (this year I believe) that my datacenter at NAC has suffered a complete power outage [url], their backups failed, and my entire rack of servers were power-cycled.

Luckily I am not a web host but I am running some critical public web services/sites. I have all of the equipment to manage my own colocated machines from afar (monitoring, remote reboot hardware, and KVM/IP hardware for all of my machines) but I'm dead in the water if my datacenter's power is out.

I always ease my pain throughout a network outage or power outage by visiting DSLReports. Their HUGE website is hosted in the same datacenter (probably in the same room) as me and while it is a terrible thing to say, being able to share the downtime with a bigger fish is easier for me to handle.

CPanel VPS 24-48 Hours

Jul 28, 2007

I am currently running DA on my VPS and have about 15-20 accounts on it. We are upgrading to a dedicated running plesk while we need it, but I have not found a tool or an easy way to transfer DA accounts to plesk without problems. Because of this, I feel it would be easiest to transfer the accounts to a cPanel VPS, then to plesk. I know hosts are not supposed to PM here, but if you can offer me a cPanel VPS sometime within the next week for 24-48 hours for under $5-7, that would be great. This may seem like a little amount of money, but realistically it is a good amount in comparison to the pricing for a whole month of service.

It can be OpenVZ, virtuozzo, or Xen.

Top Usage Over Constant 48/72 Hours

Jul 17, 2009

I am wanting to get access to 'top -c' for a period of 48/72 hours.

Now I have found the following

Code:

top -c -b -d 15 > top.txt
What this does is every 15 seconds add reply 'top -c' to top.txt

Now I can make this into a shell script then put it into the background and exit SSH while leaving it running.

Now the question is will this use much usage/server load over the 48/72hrs, it will be checking 4 times every minute.

63 Hours And Still Going Downtime With Liquidweb

May 3, 2008

like to clarify this is not a post to bash liquidweb.

I have been a loyal customer of LW for the past 2 years (almost)

My websites have been down since Thursday 3:00 a.m due to "DDos Attack"

on Friday night, the network engineer told me the "DDos Attack" has stopped and problem should have been resolved. However, no websites were accessible.

On Saturday, I ensure you I have made many phone calls to Liquidweb dedicated server support and try to resolve this issue. (Never once did I raise my voice and they were being very polite.)

I believe the server admins that were helping was at the end of their shifts and every time I try to make a phone call to the person that was assisting me to get an update, liquidweb would tell me that he has gone home. Every time the server admin finishes his shift, the support ticket is not assigned to anyone else that is working until I make a phone call to them stating my problem.

I own quite a few large sites that generate over 3 millions hits per day and every hour of downtime means I will be losing valuable clients and revenue. That is why I am extremely frustrated with the 63 hours downtime as it seems like the results of working hard for the past 2 years is slipping away from me as the clock keeps ticking.

I am sorry, I am just trying to share this with fellow webmasters as I really need a place to express my feeling. (None of my friends will understand online business.)

Again, I am not bashing liquidweb...I must have really bad luck myself.

FDCServers (24 Hours) VPS Review

Nov 19, 2008

To start please take this in mind I have servers colo'd at FDC and have 0 problems, so i'm still all for fdc servers.

Here is my 24 hours review on my new vps server from FDC setup was quick less than 5hours after paying my invoice.

Now down to my problems. Off peak hours last night my VPS server was great 10 / 20mbits solid speed on sending data from the box today I am unable to get over 150kb/sec.

This doesn't help me since the nature of my business I need to transfer files fast between servers. The VPS speeds of 150kb/sec will be no use for my business if anything make our job harder.

These tests were taken using the internal fdc network transferring from the new vps to one of my 1gig fdc colos and other various servers I have on the FDC network.

After contacting fdc support about this speed issue they logged in and checked the speeds they did a download of the speedtest file from the fdc website around 30 - 40mbits. But they didn't test the outgoing from the server.

I received the response that I am sharing bandwidth on the node so speeds could vary so on there 100mbit unmetered vds package they are saying 150kb/sec is acceptable.

So basically after that my last response is if 150kb/sec are the speeds i can expect from a VDS then please cancel my server at the end of the billing period as the VDS will be no use to me.

So now I have been transferred to billing to cancel the vps at the end of the billing period.

So to sum it up, vps setup was fast and the vps runs great but don't expect the speeds you can get from one of there dedicated servers.

MySQL 'freezes' Every Few Hours

Jul 9, 2007

Im running MySQL 5.0.32 on a Debian Etch server. I recently moved a couple sites from a Debian Sarge (with MySQL 4.1) server over, and now MySQL has become very unstable.

Every few hours mysql just hangs on a query. All the following queries are queued and never get executed. The only way to get things running again is forcefully killing and restarting the mysql process. After that things work again...for a few hours.

The logs (error and query log) show nothing exceptional. When it hangs and I do a 'show processlist;' I noticed that everytime a SELECT....IN (a,b,c) query is holding up everything. Could the 'IN ()' be the reason for mysql not completing the query and holding up the rest?

Another option might be to temp. go back to MySQL 4.1...but that is going to be a real problem on Debian Etch

Review Of Future Hosting - 48 Hours

Oct 11, 2009

I thought I should share my feelings on FutureHosting even though we have only been on their server for 48 hours.

Background
---------
I started having my sites hosted back in 1990's and have had about a dozen hosts since then. (Started with Pair.net when they were like maybe 2 of the 3 hosts on the planet, LOL) 90% of the time, I have needed to find a host due to my former host being acquired or some other non-technical reason. So you could say that I tend to stick with a host for as long as possible. I have moved from shared hosting, to reseller hosting, to dedicated hosting, and now to VPS hosting. I started my VPS adventures with PowerVPS.

This was about 3 years ago if I recall. Like most here, I did a great deal of homework, read and lurked. PowerVPS was in my top 5 final list. I selected PowerVPS and was extremely happy to put the headaches of dedicated servers behind me. For two years the VPS was very stable. That changed about one year ago. I was told I was hitting resource max and asked to upgrade. Oddly, my sites' traffic was about 1/2 of what it was in the first two years. ie my VPS should have less resources needed. PowerVPS moved many of its legacy VPS users to new hardware. I don't recall they informed me, though they said they did. They did inform me that they would make a decision on the remaining legacy users in terms of billing promotions -- they never did. Downtime continued. I began to notice that their newer techs did not share the same ability of communication and skills as past/founding techs. Answers were curt and became more and more unhelpful. We have all seen this pattern before where a host starts out so well (2 or 3 guys/gals), and as it grows, they add remote staff that just don't have the same passion of the founders, or language skills. (Disclaimer: English isn't my native, so no excuse for lack of communications in business IMHO).

Thus, I began my search for a new VPS here. FutureHosting was in my top 5 along with KnownHost, SolarVPS, Jaguar. Actually, I rated them 3 or 4 in my final list. I tested all of these hosts' sales responses and went through the shopping process just before clicking 'sign-me up'. (I work in Ecommerce so I like to see that process). SolarVPS answered my questions the best. KnownHost a close second. I am sure there are a few other good VPS companies like ServInt, Lunar and HostNexus, but their prices just don't reflect the marketplace IMHO.

Due to my needs and budget though, I selected FutureHosting as they seem to offer the best balance -- competitiveness and support.

FutureHosting - 48 hours
-------------------
As my data was on PowerVPS with Plesk, selecting another provider with Plesk was important. Actually, I have always been a Plesk fan having used all the CPs (I just wish they would stop trying to offer 1,000 products and spin off a CP-only company like they were.)

FutureHosting (FH) started the migration on Saturday night. Sunday morning I notice that all sites hadn't been moved. I checked my inbox and read the many emails awaiting me. It seemed Plesk was having a hard time using its server migration tool (typical of Plesk that they introduce a feature that doesn't work 100% of the time.) FH informed me they would migrate my VPS (domains, etc) manually.

While this was going on, another tech worked on some requests I had related to SSH, root access, etc.

What I found in the last 48 hours was what I had hoped for... Techs that received my tickets, and replies that stated WHAT they were doing. I felt informed during the entire process. In some cases, CLEAR explanations were given. In some cases, SIMPLE answers were given -- where I couldn't grasp the why. The level of service was what I experienced in my first year with PowerVPS. And now, a really important point -- EVERY tech that worked on my tickets displayed the same level of competence. All too often, I have felt in the past that the level and ability of techs ranged so much. This became more apparent as of late on PowerVPS (are they contracting out support? No idea.) It was a real pleasure to deal with each tech. I think I counted 5 different names! What I REALLY appreciate was that it was obvious that each tech taking over a ticket READ the entire ticket thread. Too often when a tech takes over due to moving it a tier or shift change, I felt like I needed to explain everything from the start. Gah!! I don't have time or patience for that.

Hardware wise, I moved from (PowerVPS) AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 246 to Intel(R) Xeon(R)CPU E5420 @ 2.50GHz (Future Hosting). In the case of PowerVPS, my VPS was on an old legacy machine that a few of us unlucky ones were still on (We were asked to bump up $$ to go to the new machines, I refused.) I don't know which server is better, but thus far my sites feel much more snappy. I also notice that my former VPS used burst RAM approach vs. SLM. (See my other post http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=896249). I should also state that perhaps PowerVPS uses this in their new machines. No idea.

Overall, I am paying the same amount for my new VPS, the sites are loading much faster and most importantly, the service has been top rate. I was a little worried at first because I heard such great reviews of Knownhost and SolarVPS (I am sure they are warranted), but based on the past 48-hours, I must say my selection was right for me in many ways. I'm crossing my fingers that this level of service will continue 3, 5 or more years down the road. If they do, I won't hesitate to recommend FutureHosting to the MANY developers I come into contact with. (I have sent a great deal of leads/business to every host I have been at.) I will need to revisit this thread on my anniversary to see if things continue in such a great manner.

Host Which Would Set Up Server Or VPS Fast (up To 1-2 Hours)

May 19, 2008

Somebody posted a video in my website which got viral. Many big websites (like gizmodo) embeded it and I've maxed out my 100mbit/s connection. Traffic is increasing and my website started crashing.

I want to move that video to other server ASAP so my website would stop crashing.

Do you know any host which would set up server or VPS fast (up to 1-2 hours)?
