WireSix.com - Holding Servers And Payment Hostage

Apr 22, 2008

I had two servers with wiresix, for the most part support was OK (not the best, but not really bad) and Ryan was responsive to AIM and emails. At one point I no longer needed my dedicated server with them as I had moved everything over to my Colo server. I submitted a ticket to cancel the server (i gave 45 days) and request confirmation from them which I never got. AS the time got closer for that server to go away I started getting longer and longer response times to IM and support. Because of this I felt the need to cancel my colo box and get it shipped to a DC by me as not to be left stranded by a host that didnt care.

I submitted another cancellation request (about 6 weeks in advanced) and again got no response. About this time the dedicated server was supposed to go offline. I got invoiced and charged for it so I opened another ticket asking for a refund for a server that had been canceled. No responses, on anything. Now it comes time for the colo box to be taken offline...

I requested it be taken offline and shipped out a little bit earlier then the actual date. I provided shipping information. I also noted they can use the payment that should have been refunded to cover the shipping costs. This was the first of April. I am borrowing a server from a coworker for my customer who is supposed to be on the colo server. No big deal right, borrow a server for a few days and then move the customer back to the new server...Right?

Wrong. As of this date Ryan still has all my servers online, in the rack and will not even respond to my tickets or AIM. I cant even get in touch with him (or the rest of wiresix) to allow a friend of mine to goto the datacenter and pick up the server. The refund? Who knows... At this point I am convinced Ryan is angered that I am leaving and is hold my colocated server and my payment hostage. I have no other explanation.

I have attached an image file (with some information whited out) with the tickets and the last response times intact. Please I urge everyone DO NOT USE WIRESIX. If you do, do not ever cancel or you will never see your hardware.

At this point, I do not think I have any other choice but to contact my lawyer or the Atlanta Police department for the theft of my hardware.

LeaseWeb - Wait Two Weeks For Server Setup

Apr 1, 2009

I've ordered server from LeaseWeb two weeks ago and still wait for the server setup. Its looks to slow for me - we are used to wait only a few hours for servers setup in datacanters in the US.

I'm afraid that such slow response will be also in response and level of the support. Do you think I should cancel this service and look for other provider in Europe? If yes please suggest such provider.

I've paid in advance by paypal for 3 month(~ 500 EURO). Do you think I will be able to cancel that payment?

Leaseweb Mail Servers

Nov 2, 2008

I have configured my yahoo domain to use Leaseweb shared Linux hosting by changing my A records to my hosting IP. When I check my yahoo domain control panel I see,

Type: >>>>>>>>>>>>> Source: >>>>>>>>>>>>> Destination:
CNAME Record>>>>>>>>>>>>>mail.mydomain.com>>>>>>>>>>>Yahoo! Hostname
Problem

All my email addresses that I created from Leaseweb plesk control panel can not receive any emails (test emails bounce back with a failure notice)

I think I have to change the above CNAME record in yahoo domain control panel to leaseweb mail servers.

InterServer Setup Time

Sep 29, 2009

experience with InterServer, may I know how long it took for your servers to be set up?

I had order a server, received an order confirmation email. Then I paid through PayPal and that was the end of it. No payment confirmation.

My order status in the member page is still "pending".

Is this normal? I've only order about slightly more than a day ago.

Setup Time For Hetzner.de

Mar 5, 2008

I am currently planning to move from my current provider to Hetzner.de, and wanted to synchronize this in a way that would avoid too much overlay, basically don't want to double pay for a whole month.

I asked hetzner.de support how long it takes to setup a root server, and their answer was "up to 3 weeks", and asking for the average did not help.

how long it usually takes to setup a server there? Isn't 3 weeks too long?

Virpus VPS Setup Time

May 18, 2008

Due to continuing problems with my current provider, I have signed up for a managed DirectAdmin VPS with Virpus.

I'll post reviews as time passes but I just wanted to post that I ordered at 3:55pm and I was setup just after 5pm. That is awesome setup time. I've now requested initial hardening and optimization, since I have a managed package. I don't expect it to be as fast (it is Sunday after all), but the setup time was awesome. I don't even know how they got a DA licence that fast, I thought that was a real bottleneck sometimes.

Average Time To Setup Firewall

Aug 15, 2007

I am wondering what you think the average amount of time it should take to setup a firewall under the following circumstances.

The firewall in question is a Cisco ASA 5505

Say you have the firewall now but it is unstable so you an RMA to replace it, all the config rules are already known and can be seen in the old firewall when the new one arrives. There are only about 25 ACL rules and 6 object-groups that the ACLs use. There is NAT running with ~23 IPs that are statically routed to internal IPs and it has a VPN configured.

How long do you think it should take to configure the new firewall to act like the old one and replace the old one?

Is It Time To Setup A 'don't Use Hotmail Advisory Website'

May 15, 2008

Hotmail doesn't work. The email filtering technologies are still broken 18 months after the original problems were found with their implementation. And now it looks like they've stopped supporting it.

Seriously, does anyone know if the email filtering team at Microsoft has just given up on responding to requests and complaints? We've just deployed two new servers and both are blocked for delivering email to clients Hotmail/MSN/Live.com accounts.

The following steps have been taken:

1. Our DNS has been tested and checked using DNSstuff.com services.

2. Our server IP addresses checked to ensure they do not appear in any blacklists.

3. rDNS correctly setup for hostnames and mailserver names.

4. All our email is signed using DomainKeys.

5. All our domain names have published SPF records.

6. All our domain names have valid abuse@ and postmaster@ email addresses.

7. We have emailed senderid@microsoft.com notifying them as requested on postmaster.msn.com of our published SPF records.

8. We have even completed the senderid support form providing further notification here:
[url]

9. I have contacted the technical support team using the contact form on [url] witn absolutely no success.

Two weeks later I've made no progress whatsoever beyond receiving a request to complete a survey rating the non-existent support I have received. (No human has responded to any of my messages) And all our messages to Hotmail are still disappearing into the email filtering black-hole.

At this point I'm starting to wonder if Hotmail is even usable as an email service anymore. I doubt many people will be bothering to jump through all the hoops I am to resolve this issue. I dread to think how much legitimate email is getting caught up in the Microsoft email filtering black-hole - never providing any notification or information to senders their messages were not delivered.

Meanwhile, our email arrives perfectly in Yahoo/Gmail who both pass our SPF records and DomainKeys signatures. Oh, and we're not engaging in any email marketing practises (i.e. spam).

I need to make a change to terminal services configuration on all of them. I don't want to login to each one and manually edit it.

How the hell can I do this in Windows?

In Linux i could knock up a script in about 5 minutes with expect that would login to every single one and make the change i wanted.

So now i wanna host ABC.com in that server. My registrar is Godaddy.

So how to setup at godaddy? can anyone guide me.

Is it like make hosts like ns1 and ns2 and put the IPs from the server in the fileds?

Then i have to put the nameservers fileds also ns1.abc.com and ns2.abc.com too. Or just making ns1 and ns2 hosts enough?

Web/Database Servers Setup

Jul 9, 2008

We are currently looking into getting a new setup to serve our online store, and I would be thankful for feedback as to which servers to choose.

Today almost the entire store is on a single three year old dual proc/dual core server (4 gb ram, RAID5) that is beginning to get overloaded. (There is also a simpler secondary server that serves some static content and does some cron jobs.)

The system is a in-house developed LAMP (where the P is mod_perl/Mason). The database is rather large, two tables with 2-6 million rows are hit multiple times on most public pages - these grow with ~10% per year. Several other often-used tables are in the few-hundred thousand to a million rows, also continuously growing.

We anticipate rapid sales/visit growth over the next couple of years (a good day today is 6000-8000 visits), so I'm thinking of separating the database and web server. The most likely hosting candidate right now is Softlayer's WDC data center (we are located in Europe).

With that background, does this sound like an adequate setup:

Database server
Dual Xeon 5430 - 2.66GHz
8GB ram
RAIDed 3x73GB (or possibly 147GB) (15k rpm). I'm thinking RAID1? The big tables are not written to too much during the day, so read performance is more important than writing.
Web server

This (these) would be serving the Apache/mod_perl part of the system. Some static content (images and some PDFs) unless we put them on a separate server (all static content are placed in a single folder so it would be easy to do a mod_rewrite to an image server).
Dual Xeon 5050 or 7320
4GB ram
2x73GB (SCSI 10k rpm) RAID1

I don't think we need to load balance between two web servers from the beginning but that is something we will keep in mind (and hopefully have to do at some point). Are the two configurations sane (or is one overkill compared to the other)? Generally, how many web servers can a single database server serve? Email is handled separately (Google Apps). I estimate our budget to not more than $1000-1500 a month (if we go with Softlayer we will most likely use some other services such as firewalls, SAN and so on).

We currently use Suse, I have previously used RedHat on personal servers at ThePlanet. Is RedHat 4 32-bit a sensible choice? I have some experience with CPanel so we would most likely use that.

Building New Servers - Drive Setup

Oct 4, 2009

We're building a bunch of new servers (as I mentioned in another thread). What do you guys think is the best drive layout? Traditionally we just have the entire 4-6 drives in a RAID 5, but now I'm wondering if it makes sense to have a separate OS drive, and then the rest in a raid 5?

On a side note, we need a giant ~2TB-3TB partition on these boxes, that's why we go with the multi-drive raid setup. Thoughts? I know it was customary to have a separate OS drive back in the day (I remember having WD raptor's for that), but now when the WD Black-edition (which we'll be using for the raid setup) are as fast as the raptor's, is it even worth it?

Setup- Multiple Servers Or 1 Powerful One

Sep 21, 2007

some setup recommendations as I feel I have outgrown my current server.

I have two websites:

#1 is a busy vBulletin based forum with 42,000 members.

#2 is a website with Wordpress and Vbulletin installed (though the forum is nowhere near as busy as the first site) and gets roughly 2000 uniques a day.

When site #2 gets a good surge of visitors from offline media or a large site, site #1 will die first with the "mysql error: too many connections" error and site #2 will take a very very long time to load.

For every other day, the load is quite low, nearly always under 1.50.

The current server that both sites reside on has the following specs:

Quote:

processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 15
model : 2
model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66GHz
stepping : 9
cpu MHz : 2667.540
cache size : 512 KB
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug : no
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 2
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe cid xtpr
bogomips : 5339.18

Mem: 1003 484 519 0 3 192
-/+ buffers/cache: 288 715
Swap: 2047 25 2022

What sort of setup would be best for me?

A files server and a sql server?

A server for site #1 and another for site #2?

A single, more powerful server?

Or something else you recommend?

Also, for the setup you do recommend, can you recommend a hosting company that is reliable and can do it for a good price?

Time For A Dedicated? And Opinions On Future Hosting Dedicated Servers?

Mar 26, 2009

Some information about my forum:

I run a VBulletin forum with - 575,614 post, 14,369 members and 2.9 million page views per month. On average there are 300 - 400 people on the site.

The server right now is a Linux CentOS VPS with 1.1 gigs of memory. The hosting provider keeps telling me that I need a dedicated server.

Question # 1 - In your opinion - do you think its time for a dedicated server?

The server I am looking at has these stats:

E8300
2 GB RAM
250GB HD
cPanel
Management

The price I was given is pretty good. So the offer is going to be hard to pass up.

Question # 2 - Has anyone here used Future Hosting for their dedicated server solution?

Payment Methods

Jan 22, 2009

I am planning to build my own site, but the problem is that I still don't have a domain and a hosting site..

I wanted to buy one but they all requested for a credit card number.. I'm still a student now and unfortunately I have no credit card..

Does anyone know any other way of paying those hosting sites and registering a domain w/o using credit card or something..

Or maybe since i'm still new, should I go for free hosting then? but my site uses MySql for database, is there a free hosting site that lets you use a database?

i m not telling much but its about 6 days our server is turned off and our website is down ,still no answer from them

its better for them to sell watermelon rather than webhosting and dedicated servers (IMO)

because they don't know how its heavy for a big website to be down
