I have a dedicated server that I am renting that appears to randomly respond very slowly for some reason (pings are between 90-4000ms with about 75% packet loss).
This has been happening lately (about once a week for the past 4 weeks) and I thought I had originally found the cause of the problem but it appears I haven't.
Originally, when this problem was happening we were getting an abnormally high about of traffic but a reboot always fixed the issue. I've checked every where I can think of but I cannot find anything out of the ordinary.
ight now we're averaging less than 2Mbps in traffic, the CPU load is less than 0.75, the memory usage is at 55% with no swap being used, Apache connections are normal, no active SSH, FTP, or mail connections, I've restarted all services which had no impact, I've checked the access and error logs but can't see anything out of the ordinary.
I have a ticket open with the data center but I'm trying to figure this out on my own to fix whatever is causing this so I can move my data over to a new server we just got setup over the weekend in a local data center.

I recently made a shift to FDC for one of my servers that I use for downloadable content.
I went for a $199 server with a 100mbps shared bandwidth port. Now, the only problem I seem to be having with it is that downloads appear to be, I would say recognized, very slowly by the server before they start, however, once the download starts I get a full speed. This usually happens during peak times.
I'm using about 10/15mbps on the server according to my cPanel statistics. I just wanted to ask here prior to contacting FDC on this, whether this slow server response time has something to do with the bandwidth port, or perhaps the server's RAM, CPU, etc? Given I'm using quite minimal bandwidth on the port, should I consider having them fix this or upgrade the server instead?
And if I had to upgrade, would I need to upgrade the port or the RAM, or both for this?

We have a dedicated server and we host 4 news portals based on e107 and joomla.
My partner on Sunday has upgraded mysql from version 4 to 5. Now the server experiences very high CPU usage and query time on portals has been increased very much.
We used to have query times lower than 1 sec for the main page of [url](which is a site that receives about 2000 visits/day) and now query times are 5-15sec !
Does anybody know if this is makes sense ?

experience with InterServer, may I know how long it took for your servers to be set up?
I had order a server, received an order confirmation email. Then I paid through PayPal and that was the end of it. No payment confirmation.
My order status in the member page is still "pending".
Is this normal? I've only order about slightly more than a day ago.

I am currently planning to move from my current provider to Hetzner.de, and wanted to synchronize this in a way that would avoid too much overlay, basically don't want to double pay for a whole month.
I asked hetzner.de support how long it takes to setup a root server, and their answer was "up to 3 weeks", and asking for the average did not help.
how long it usually takes to setup a server there? Isn't 3 weeks too long?

Due to continuing problems with my current provider, I have signed up for a managed DirectAdmin VPS with Virpus.
I'll post reviews as time passes but I just wanted to post that I ordered at 3:55pm and I was setup just after 5pm. That is awesome setup time. I've now requested initial hardening and optimization, since I have a managed package. I don't expect it to be as fast (it is Sunday after all), but the setup time was awesome. I don't even know how they got a DA licence that fast, I thought that was a real bottleneck sometimes.

How long is a acceptable waiting time? just signed up to Dedishack - yesterday, Monday and been told I need to wait till Thursday.
Acceptable waiting time?
Not in a rush and I am not complaining just curious. First time I have had to wait for a dedicated server should be worth the wait though.

I am wondering what you think the average amount of time it should take to setup a firewall under the following circumstances.
The firewall in question is a Cisco ASA 5505
Say you have the firewall now but it is unstable so you an RMA to replace it, all the config rules are already known and can be seen in the old firewall when the new one arrives. There are only about 25 ACL rules and 6 object-groups that the ACLs use. There is NAT running with ~23 IPs that are statically routed to internal IPs and it has a VPN configured.
How long do you think it should take to configure the new firewall to act like the old one and replace the old one?

Hotmail doesn't work. The email filtering technologies are still broken 18 months after the original problems were found with their implementation. And now it looks like they've stopped supporting it.
Seriously, does anyone know if the email filtering team at Microsoft has just given up on responding to requests and complaints? We've just deployed two new servers and both are blocked for delivering email to clients Hotmail/MSN/Live.com accounts.
The following steps have been taken:
1. Our DNS has been tested and checked using DNSstuff.com services.
2. Our server IP addresses checked to ensure they do not appear in any blacklists.
3. rDNS correctly setup for hostnames and mailserver names.
4. All our email is signed using DomainKeys.
5. All our domain names have published SPF records.
6. All our domain names have valid abuse@ and postmaster@ email addresses.
7. We have emailed senderid@microsoft.com notifying them as requested on postmaster.msn.com of our published SPF records.
8. We have even completed the senderid support form providing further notification here:
[url]
9. I have contacted the technical support team using the contact form on [url] witn absolutely no success.
Two weeks later I've made no progress whatsoever beyond receiving a request to complete a survey rating the non-existent support I have received. (No human has responded to any of my messages) And all our messages to Hotmail are still disappearing into the email filtering black-hole.
At this point I'm starting to wonder if Hotmail is even usable as an email service anymore. I doubt many people will be bothering to jump through all the hoops I am to resolve this issue. I dread to think how much legitimate email is getting caught up in the Microsoft email filtering black-hole - never providing any notification or information to senders their messages were not delivered.
Meanwhile, our email arrives perfectly in Yahoo/Gmail who both pass our SPF records and DomainKeys signatures. Oh, and we're not engaging in any email marketing practises (i.e. spam).

I just added a database server in private network and moved the database for Vbulletin Forum to this server.
But some how, the Forum is loading extremely slow compare to before ( when it was on the localhost). Also, Compare to another website on server (using local database) it is much slower.
One thing good is the load is lower
2 servers are connected via 10mbs private link, both servers are at Softlayer.
webserver: Opteron 170, 2GB RAM, 73GB SCSI 15K
database: Quad Xeon 3220, 2GB RAM, 73GB SCSI 15K.

I've got 25 domains on a Virtuozzo/Plesk8.6/CentOS5 VPS. Each domain has one up-to-date install of WordPress, most have very little traffic (average 200mb per month), maybe 2 domains get 5-7gb traffic per month.
I monitor port 80 connections and rarely see more than 10 at a time.
That should in my opinion be no problem at all for a VPS with 768mb guaranteed ram and 2.4ghz cpu. I've got 30gb hard drive spare too.
But.... about 8 or 10 times a day it grinds to a complete halt: server load at 500-1000%, sites timing out, plesk takes 3mins to load, often I can't even connect with SSH, and the plesk web server, apache
INSERT INTO module_watchdog_sys_stat (time, type, value, service_id) VALUES(FROM_UNIXTIME(1226404705), 'MAINMEM_USAGE', 17472, 11);
80 seconds sounds like a huge amount of time for a MySQL insert to me! Does anyone know if this is likely to be the cause of my trouble? Some problem with Plesk and the database? Or could it be something else?

Server time is:
Tue Nov 11 17:02:51 CST 2008
Squirrelmail time show:
Code:
Last Refresh:

So, that is correct too..
But email arrives with -4 hours time, example:
webmaster@xxx.com 1:03 pm testing email
I already rebooted httpd, exim, and imap server, and the server itself too.. and problem stills.

I can't get access to a certain site. I always get the page with:
network time out - server at *** takes to long to respons. More people have noticed this and apparently it only happens to people with certain specific providers. And not all the time. Some times they DO get access eventy to they belong to the same ISP. So I guess an ISP isn't blocking access to it otherwise it would be permenantly/The site administrator insists that certain ISP's are blocking his site. He's hosting it on his own server. The domain belongs is registered at namecheap.com.
If an ISP is blocking this site (if that's possible?), that would lead to that 'network timeout' page wouldn't it?
What is the most likely reason for getting a timeout page anyway?

I've been waiting to get a server for a long time. On Monday, I went ahead and ordered a server from The Planet. 20 minutes later, I decided for the money I might as well upgrade my package a little bit (from $180 to $220). So I chatted with one of the sales representatives (Ryan B to be exact) and was told my first order was canceled and that the second server was ordered. $197 was charged for the first order and today, 5 days later, has yet to be refunded.
I found out on Tuesday that I'm being laid off on August 22. With this information, I immediately canceled my second order with The Planet, knowing I wouldn't be able to pay it monthly. I was told the order was canceled (the server was never setup) and I also asked about my first order. They said it had been canceled and I should be getting the refund shortly. That was Tuesday afternoon. I contacted them on Wednesday and again they said I should be getting the money soon. It's a simple credit card charge back, it can be done instantly. It's now Friday afternoon, almost 5 days since I ordered my first server and the money (totaling $443) still hasn't been refunded. Is this normal...? I really could use that money...

I was hosted with these guys for well over 2 years, and was spending on average more than $2,000.00 a month for servers.
I had slowly grown to well over 10 boxes, and was definately on my way. then one day I get a spam complaint that one of my serves was casing complaints. So I checked it out, and asked for the complaints to be relayed so I would have record of it..... nothing.... I responded and even tried to call, but at that point they had sent me a tciket stating.
We have recieved well ofer 1000 spam complaints from a server you lease with us, per out TOS we are terminating ALL OF YOUR SERVERS, and you have 15 days to remove the data!
WOW... there was no ability to have them terminate that server, they simply said NO your account will be terminated (all of your servers) and you will be banned from The Planet!
When I tried to call they said your not allowed to speak with the abuse dept, again I tried contacting my account manager, and he said he checked into it and only saw a few complaints, and didn;t understand why they were doing this... In short I barely got moved over to another provideer before they shut me down completely..... They did however offer one course of action... you could turn your dedicated server clients over to us so they dont have to move! THEY ACTUALLY SAID THIS!
I at that point made the move and then they hit my credit card for another month well short of 20 days before a bill would even be due.. I had to file charges at the local courthouse to get this reversed.
My advice, if you host at the planet dont send mail. get another server provider for mail, these guys are *&^)(* and they don;t care about shutting you down no matter what you spend with them, on top of that they will try to scarf your clients up if they can, after they leave you high and dry....
Anyone else have issues like this with anyone else. I want to compile a list of providers that do business like this so I can avoid them.

I've had my servers with The Planet for years. Used to be really happy with them. Ever since the merger, they seem to have deteriorated over time. Recently, I find the level of support to have become poor.
The redeeming quality is that they have had outstanding uptime over all of these years, and they are always there if you need them in a true emergency - in other words, they always pick up the phone.
I need a company that is comparable in their level of staffing and resources. Who out there is comparable, yet providing better support and overall attitude these days and for the long-haul?

The Planet used to be great. All the people that made them great left for softlayer.
The Planet support now runs the gamut from mediocre to bad. But their billing policies are atrocious. They add charges to your service without you ordering it. They promise to refund you but don't. And when you cancel, they bill you anyway. When you call, they will admit their mistake. They will claim to refund you, but then don't.
It's a nightmare. So far Softlayer is as good or even better than The Planet used to be.
When you cancel with The Planet, make sure to change your credit card number so they can't charge you. If you are contemplating hosting with them, don't. Everything good you heard about them was true, but only because of the people who left for Softlayer.
