1 SSL Cert... 1 Domain... 2 Servers. How To Setup A Backup Server
We have two in-house servers, one is hosting our public web server. The other one was just purchased to host a mirror of the production server (as a backup). The site is protected by an SSL cert... my question is how do i set up the server(s) so if/when the backup server needs to be switched into produciton, the SSL cert will transition flawlessly?
They are both apache 2 servers.

SSL Cert
Have been given a task where I am not familiar at all.. Task I have been given is to 1. implement mod_ssl in apache 2.2.4 2. create ssl cert for mail server 3. create ssl cert for Terminal Server Now the problem is am unsure when I create these crt files and keys should I enable a pass phrase or not?? Am using openssl and the documentation states if it is a server certificate then maybe better not to have a passphrase.. Initially I thought I dont want the user when they check there mail to have to authenticate their mail account and also the passphrase for the cert and same for the TS users but am unsure of the meaning and usage of the passphrase.

SSL Cert Doesn't Work On IE
I ordered a RapidSSL (also called QuickSSL) cert from RapdiSSL.com (GeoTrust) to test out an email service. It works on firefox, but not in any version of IE I have on my two computers at home, a PC and a laptop running 6.0sp2 and 7.0 respectively. When I raised a trouble ticket, Geotrust responded with a ppt attachment that clearly shows the cert working for the domain in IE. I have no reason to doubt them, but I replied with a ppt of my own showing the cert not working and am waiting for their reply. Is it possible for a cert not to work on a specific browser like this? When I asked my email service provider, they said the following: Quote: Hello, This indicates a problem with the SSL certificate that was installed. Possibly, an intermediate certificate issued by your certificate authority is need to be installed in addition to the one you gave us to enable Internet Explorer to fully trust your certificate and show the secure site. Note for example that the only difference between going to [url]and [url] is the certificate in use ... the same server and software with the same settings is used in both cases. I recommend going back to Geotrust and ask if there is a Geotrust Intermediate certificate that should be installed in addition to your issued certificate." The domain is CNAMED to their server so that the app looks as if it is being run off my domain. I don't think there is anything non-standard about this because LuxSci is a topnotch provider and this is how they enable their clients to run private label services.

Shared SSL Cert
user of shared SSL and trying to use my hosts shared SSL cert to process the form opened from a menu link. The form opens OK using href=[url] on the test page, but when I submit the form using the action=[url] I get a IE cannot display this webpage error. The host says: The way you are using our shared SSL is correct. Still there is lot of scripts in the /home/blah-blah/public_html/staging, calling the link [url], which in turn gives error. This means that the scripts do not work on our shared SSL. It seems you need a separate SSL installed for your domain for the scripts to work properly. Should it matter how many scripts (I assume he means php scripts) there are in the /staging area? Is there another way to securely send this form to the server for processing? Do I need a cert for this domain to make this work? I've seen threads on this topic in other forums but the discussion level was between experienced developers, not a beginner like me. I would appreciate a do this not that kind of answer if possible.

Nameservers In VPS - Domain In Godaddy - Backup - How To Setup?
I just got a VPS plan for the first time where I want to host several new websites. In the past I've used individual accounts to host a couple of other websites and haven't paid much attention to nameserver setup, just configured at my registrar whatever I was given from the hosting service. So, I got a brand new domain to act as the host of the rest of the domains I'm setting up: www.example.com. In the VPS I have setup this one as the default domain for nameservers: ns1.example.com ns2.example.com Question 1: - Can I setup ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com as the nameserververs for www.example.com ? i.e. nameserver is used for the same domain in which it is named. Even if this is possible, is it a good idea or would it be better to host it somewhere else? When I try to define those as the nameservers in Godaddy I get the error message Nameserver not registered. What am I missing? Other DNS questions Question 2: - If I host my nameservers in my VPS, I will need a separate IP for each one (ns1, ns2...and so on). Can I still use those IP's to actually host websites, or do I need additional IP's to host the actual sites? Any value in keeping each IP dedicated to a nameserver? For example: IP#1 = used for ns1 IP#2 = used for ns2 IP#1 = used for website 1 IP#2 = used for website 2 Question 3: - Are DNS backup services valuable if I host my own nameservers? Any suggestions on good quality providers? Price not an issue. Question 4: - If I used DNS backup services for example.com will that apply to ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com which I used for my VPS? and therefore will be applicable to other domains I host? Does this make sense? Or would I need a separate backup for each domain I host? Can I use one backup for multiple domains? Question 5: - What are the drawbacks of hosting multiple sites under the same IP? I control all sites under these IPs Question 6: - Can somebody recommend a good resource to learn how IP, DNS, nameservers, etc work? Any book, paid website, video... anything ? While there's a ton of info on the web, all is scattered and none seems to be too detailed enough for somebody starting to learn about this.

Multi Server Setup For DB Backup Performance
I am working on a busy and popular website which has a large amount of database activity - and requires hourly backups of all database data. At the moment the site is hosted on two servers - one for the front end web server, one for the database. Both servers are running a RAID HDD system which allows quick swaps of faulty HDDs without data loss. An hourly full backup of database tables is running which is killing the server when it runs. ISP has suggested installing a third server to run as a slave to the existing DB server, and hence always hold a duplicated of the live database. I have a feeling however that this is basically just like having RAID mirroring, but on a different machine - so to solve the problem of a potential dodgy SQL statement wiping out ALL copies of the live database, we'd STILL need hourly backups to run, and hence would still see the major system speed drop each hour at the time of backup.

SSL For Any Domain Hosted On Single Server
is there any sort of ssl certificate that will 'secure' any domain, hosted on a single server? For example, I have the following domains and subdomains: google.com test.google.com mywebsite.com hello.example.com All will be hosted on the same server (same IP) and I want all to be secured, through a SIGNED certificate, not a self signed. I assumed that wildcard ssl would be fine for this, but I just took a look and it's only for subdomains: example.example.com hello.example.com. Is there any way of having every subdomain and domain secured, using ssl, through one certificate? I don't want to have to buy individual certificates for every domain, that'd be... expensive.

Server Move - Is There A Way To Setup DNS To Show A Backup Site / Message
The data centre which I use, is moving all collacated servers to a brand new data centre next week, which will mean a two hour downtime for each of my servers and customer websites. At the moment my servers utilise two nameservers on seperate servers and when the move happens all websites will be offline with an ugly error message to any visitors. Does anyone know a good way to setup a page which would be displayed if the web server was down? I am using MS DNS. My thoughts so far is 1. Setup a 3rd nameserver which is off site from the data centre. 2. Purcahse web hosting / vps for a month on a seperate hosting company 3. Set it up so that it accepts * to a specific IP address in IIS or apache 4. I create an index.php script which gets the host header value sent i.e. [url]and the page then displays a nice maintenace i.e "We are sorry joeblogs.com is currently down for maintenace, we will be back online shortly". I think my main question is do I need to setup a 2nd www record in DNS for each site and how do I ensure the 2nd dns (backup record) only gets used when the first website / server is down.

How To Setup A Redundant Server For A Domain Name To Reduce Downtimes
I have registered a domain using godaddy. I have hosted my site on a server of my shared hosting provider(lets call them X).Currently I have pointed mydomain.com to the server and it is up and running.Sometimes, I have experienced downtimes. In order to solve this problem, I have hosted a clone of my site on another server from another hosting company(lets call them Y). 1. I want mydomain.com to point to Y when X is down 2. again point it to X when it is up. My main aim is to have my site live with less downtime. The probability having both servers down is very less. I dont know if it is technically feasible, just a thought out of dirty mind. I tried to google but was not able to find an answer specific to my problem. Can anybody tell me how to achieve this through godaddy domain. Added note, My site is not a commercial site and I cant afford large dedicated servers with clustering and failovers.

Using Domain Name Server (DNS) And A Backup Server
I currently have two VPS servers, each with 2 DNS names running on them as follows: dns1.mydomain.com (on Server A) dns2.mydomain.com (on Server A) dns3.mydomain.com (on Server B) dns4.mydomain.com (on Server B) I have websites running on each server and I would like to have something set-up so that when one server goes down, the other server displays a nice page saying the website is unavailable currently and will be back shortly - you know, something nicer then the normal "Server Not Found" default messages. What is the best way to do this? If I have CLIENTDOMAIN.COM and put them on Server A and they use all 4 DNS server names, will the top two DNS names always be used by people finding the website, and the bottom two choices only be used if the top two can't be found? I believe I have to create an account on Server B for them as well, just only placing the temporary page within the account, rather then a whole copy of their website. Correct?

I ask it because some company charge money for the SSL/month and pluss charge money for certificate/year. What does it mean if the certificate is outdated? The SSL connection works fine, isn't it? I ask it strictly technicaly.

SSL Setup
I have a dedicated server, Windows Box using IIS and Plesk. I purchased an SSL from comodo and have installed the cert without any problems. I have read the many plesk tutorials without any success. Problem: [url]works as it should [url] automatically re-directs the the browser and displays the index page found in the /httpdocs/ folder [url] not found even though the file is there and in the /httpsdocs/ folder, however the SSL is working and is indeed my SSL that I purchased. It would appear to me that for some reason the /httpsdocs/ folder is not accessible and if no specific file is requested it re directs to the /httpdocs/index.html file and thus breaking the SSL.

Set it up so they use [url] Pros and Cons Way 1: If I set it up this way, I will need to setup each FTP account in cPanel manually from what I can see, which maybe a problem in the future. Way 2: I think I would need 'PHP open_basedir Protection' turned off for this account for it to work.

Want To Setup SSL For IMAP Email And Their Cpanels
I have a couple questions maybe some of you can help me with - I have a dedicated server and many hosted customers, I want to setup SSL for IMAP email and their cpanels. Instead of purchasing individual SSL certificates for each domain. I was thinking to just use my hostanme (eg host.myhostname.net) and direct them to that as I have seen the option in WHM. My question is can I use an SSL cert for email that will act as a "fleetwide" SSL cert? For example instead of using mail.theirdomain.com could I just use mail.myhostname.com and would it give them SSL without warnings? Of course they would set their email client to mail.myhostname.com.. Is it safe or recommend to use your hostname? I read somewhere to never use your hostname as a domain.. so not sure.

Ssl Certificate, Sub-domain
i just got this ssl certificate but i have some doubts how exactly should i set up the whole magic. i created the secure.domain.com which suppose to be the sub-domain for the login page which means when user decide to sign up/login to immediately transfer to the ssl state(sample: see ebay.com and then their https login page). so, far the home page which is domain.com(or www.domain.com) it doesn't need to be covered by the ssl. so, i was just wondering how do i play the game? i know it's kinda tricky and the key is somewhere in the sub-domain name(cP set up), .htaccess and/or index.php files but not very clear to me.

While Setup DNS For 1 Domain.de
One of our customers need to use a domain.de (.de ext), he registered the domain using godaddy, and godaddy have a few very special requirements for .de domains: • The first 3 bits of the IP address (C-class) is different for each name server. • A glue record is necessary for the domain on the name servers. • The SOA (Start of Authority) must be within the following guidelines: refresh : 10000 - 86400 retry: 1800 -28800 expire: 604800 - 3600000 ttl: 180 - 345600 This is all done, 2 different C class IPs for each name servers, glue record, and SOA has been configured between specified values. Because of the 2 C class, we created DNS at server1, and pointed all www traffic to server2 (where the domain.de will be hosted) This is the DNS zone at server1 (an Ensim server): $ORIGIN . $TTL 86400 ; 1 day A XX.XX.XX.XX $ORIGIN sitename.de. ftp A XX.XX.XX.XX www A XX.XX.XX.XX This is the DNS zone at server2 (an cPanel server): ; Modified by Web Host Manager ; Zone File for sitename.de $TTL 3600 @ 86400 IN SOA nameserver2.server2.com. support@hostingcompany.com. ( 2008010804 10000 1800 604800 345600 ) sitename.de. 86400 IN NS nameserver2.server2.com. sitename.de. 86400 IN NS nameserver3.server2.com. sitename.de. 14400 IN A XX.XX.XX.XX localhost.sitename.de. 14400 IN A 127.0.0.1 sitename.de. 14400 IN MX 0 sitename.de. mail 14400 IN CNAME sitename.de. www 14400 IN A sitename.de. ftp 14400 IN A XX.XX.XX.XX While checking the domain at [url], an error appears: Zone sitename.de. Primary nameserver1.server.com. IP_ADDRESS_HERE Secondary nameserver2.server2.com. IP_ADDRESS_HERE Test results ---- fatal ---- f: [TEST SOA record present]: server failure (IN/SOA: sitename.de.) * nameserver2.server.com./IP_ADDRESS_HERE I have verified every single thing at sitename.de.db on both servers at /var/named/, disabled DNS Recursion protection, stopped firewall, and the error continues. And the error as you can see only happens with SOA at second server.

Building New Servers - Drive Setup
We're building a bunch of new servers (as I mentioned in another thread). What do you guys think is the best drive layout? Traditionally we just have the entire 4-6 drives in a RAID 5, but now I'm wondering if it makes sense to have a separate OS drive, and then the rest in a raid 5? On a side note, we need a giant ~2TB-3TB partition on these boxes, that's why we go with the multi-drive raid setup. Thoughts? I know it was customary to have a separate OS drive back in the day (I remember having WD raptor's for that), but now when the WD Black-edition (which we'll be using for the raid setup) are as fast as the raptor's, is it even worth it?

Web/Database Servers Setup
We are currently looking into getting a new setup to serve our online store, and I would be thankful for feedback as to which servers to choose. Today almost the entire store is on a single three year old dual proc/dual core server (4 gb ram, RAID5) that is beginning to get overloaded. (There is also a simpler secondary server that serves some static content and does some cron jobs.) The system is a in-house developed LAMP (where the P is mod_perl/Mason). The database is rather large, two tables with 2-6 million rows are hit multiple times on most public pages - these grow with ~10% per year. Several other often-used tables are in the few-hundred thousand to a million rows, also continuously growing. We anticipate rapid sales/visit growth over the next couple of years (a good day today is 6000-8000 visits), so I'm thinking of separating the database and web server. The most likely hosting candidate right now is Softlayer's WDC data center (we are located in Europe). With that background, does this sound like an adequate setup: Database server Dual Xeon 5430 - 2.66GHz 8GB ram RAIDed 3x73GB (or possibly 147GB) (15k rpm). I'm thinking RAID1? The big tables are not written to too much during the day, so read performance is more important than writing. Web server This (these) would be serving the Apache/mod_perl part of the system. Some static content (images and some PDFs) unless we put them on a separate server (all static content are placed in a single folder so it would be easy to do a mod_rewrite to an image server). Dual Xeon 5050 or 7320 4GB ram 2x73GB (SCSI 10k rpm) RAID1 I don't think we need to load balance between two web servers from the beginning but that is something we will keep in mind (and hopefully have to do at some point). Are the two configurations sane (or is one overkill compared to the other)? Generally, how many web servers can a single database server serve? Email is handled separately (Google Apps). I estimate our budget to not more than $1000-1500 a month (if we go with Softlayer we will most likely use some other services such as firewalls, SAN and so on). We currently use Suse, I have previously used RedHat on personal servers at ThePlanet. Is RedHat 4 32-bit a sensible choice? I have some experience with CPanel so we would most likely use that.

Setup- Multiple Servers Or 1 Powerful One
some setup recommendations as I feel I have outgrown my current server. I have two websites: #1 is a busy vBulletin based forum with 42,000 members. #2 is a website with Wordpress and Vbulletin installed (though the forum is nowhere near as busy as the first site) and gets roughly 2000 uniques a day. When site #2 gets a good surge of visitors from offline media or a large site, site #1 will die first with the "mysql error: too many connections" error and site #2 will take a very very long time to load. For every other day, the load is quite low, nearly always under 1.50. The current server that both sites reside on has the following specs: Quote: processor : 0 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 15 model : 2 model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66GHz stepping : 9 cpu MHz : 2667.540 cache size : 512 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 2 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe cid xtpr bogomips : 5339.18 total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1003 484 519 0 3 192 -/+ buffers/cache: 288 715 Swap: 2047 25 2022 What sort of setup would be best for me? A files server and a sql server? A server for site #1 and another for site #2? A single, more powerful server? Or something else you recommend? How Do You Backup Your Servers
Just curious how everyone backups their servers offsite. I have "onsite" (more like on server, as I don't have physical access to the actual network obviously) so it puts .7z files in right folders and I occasionally go and download the latest backup. it does 10 rotations on the server. But in my case its a simple small enough backup. For big servers such as hosting, how do you go about backing up all the data? I know some dedicated hosts provide backup, but they tend to be way too expensive, so I'm sure theres cheaper ways.
