Average Time To Setup Firewall
Aug 15, 2007
I am wondering what you think the average amount of time it should take to setup a firewall under the following circumstances.
The firewall in question is a Cisco ASA 5505
Say you have the firewall now but it is unstable so you an RMA to replace it, all the config rules are already known and can be seen in the old firewall when the new one arrives. There are only about 25 ACL rules and 6 object-groups that the ACLs use. There is NAT running with ~23 IPs that are statically routed to internal IPs and it has a VPN configured.
How long do you think it should take to configure the new firewall to act like the old one and replace the old one?

I have open another ticket thinking that there is mabye ticket error and thay have not receive the first one and 1h befora i have open the fist ticket about the problem i have send them another ticket about sales and so far no reply.
I have sugest them multiple times and now i`m vary disapointed.

As I have never used cPanel neither have whatsoever experience with control panels, in the process of ordering a couple of new server I am wondering what's the average recovery time after a server failure which involves data (ie. disk failure).
I am interested to understand this, because I need to choose between hardware raid or backup disk.
For example, at LiquidWeb (this is just one of the many managed providers i am evaluating) you can pay the same server 264$ with 2x250 hardware raid 1, and 219$ with 2x250 simple hard drives, where the second one is supposed to be a backup drive.
I am yet to ask, but on this servers most likely (at this prices) they do not have hot swappable disk drives where they can rebuild the array "live", so also if i choose raid hardware, in case of a disk failure, i face a downtime to bring down the server, rebuild the array, bring on the server, which I guess is something not less than 30-60 minutes downtime.
The advantage of this solution is that a disk failure keeps the system running, so you can schedule a maintenance window to replace the disk and rebuild the array, I guess.
On the other side, relying on a backup disk (and of course rsyncing data to an offsite server, i would do this anyway) you save 45$ each month, and disks after all do not fail every month.
If the main disk fails, they need to replace the disk, install again the server with what I suppose being a standard image (so let's figure a couple of hours, as they have a 30min hardware replacement sla), then you need to restore backups (which in my case are something like 20gigs). So I guess, on an average, it would take something like 4 hours downtime.
Am I correct ?
What would you reccomend as a solution with cpanel, taking into account the huge price difference ? Backup drive or Hardware raid ?
This would be for a single big website, not a hosting-company with resellers and customers environment, so I would value more the monthly saving, rather than the high availability, but of course I am interested to know what is the average time to recover a cpanel server after a drive failure.
Besides I have also another question, as I have never had a colocated server with raid hardware, so i do not know anything about this.
When a drive fails in a raid1 hardware environment, how the hosting provider gets notified ? I suppose it's not a led on the server to blink, as no one would see it.
So if you have software raid (like my computer at home) you get an email from mdadm with "warning, array degraded", so you know it quick and you can check it anytime doing a ' cat /proc/mdstat '. What about hardware raid?
My fear is that nobody notices my raid1 drive failure, the server keeps going on just a drive, then maybe the other drive fails, and it would be unpleasant: while a single drive failure would be obviously very easy to spot for me.

I've been using dedicated hosting in places like the planet and rackspace for a long time now, but we're about to purchase a rack in a local data facility. This is my first time setting up a rack environment, so I have a bunch of questions.
They'll be giving me an ethernet drop into the cabinet. I have to take it from there. I'm thinking I needed a router/firewall. Am I right? Can those be a single device? Should they be? Which models would you recommend? (We're still a small operation, we don't usually push more than 1Mbps bandwidth).

experience with InterServer, may I know how long it took for your servers to be set up?
I had order a server, received an order confirmation email. Then I paid through PayPal and that was the end of it. No payment confirmation.
My order status in the member page is still "pending".
Is this normal? I've only order about slightly more than a day ago.

I am currently planning to move from my current provider to Hetzner.de, and wanted to synchronize this in a way that would avoid too much overlay, basically don't want to double pay for a whole month.
I asked hetzner.de support how long it takes to setup a root server, and their answer was "up to 3 weeks", and asking for the average did not help.
how long it usually takes to setup a server there? Isn't 3 weeks too long?

Due to continuing problems with my current provider, I have signed up for a managed DirectAdmin VPS with Virpus.
I'll post reviews as time passes but I just wanted to post that I ordered at 3:55pm and I was setup just after 5pm. That is awesome setup time. I've now requested initial hardening and optimization, since I have a managed package. I don't expect it to be as fast (it is Sunday after all), but the setup time was awesome. I don't even know how they got a DA licence that fast, I thought that was a real bottleneck sometimes.

How long is a acceptable waiting time? just signed up to Dedishack - yesterday, Monday and been told I need to wait till Thursday.
Acceptable waiting time?
Not in a rush and I am not complaining just curious. First time I have had to wait for a dedicated server should be worth the wait though.

Hotmail doesn't work. The email filtering technologies are still broken 18 months after the original problems were found with their implementation. And now it looks like they've stopped supporting it.
Seriously, does anyone know if the email filtering team at Microsoft has just given up on responding to requests and complaints? We've just deployed two new servers and both are blocked for delivering email to clients Hotmail/MSN/Live.com accounts.
The following steps have been taken:
1. Our DNS has been tested and checked using DNSstuff.com services.
2. Our server IP addresses checked to ensure they do not appear in any blacklists.
3. rDNS correctly setup for hostnames and mailserver names.
4. All our email is signed using DomainKeys.
5. All our domain names have published SPF records.
6. All our domain names have valid abuse@ and postmaster@ email addresses.
7. We have emailed senderid@microsoft.com notifying them as requested on postmaster.msn.com of our published SPF records.
8. We have even completed the senderid support form providing further notification here:
[url]
9. I have contacted the technical support team using the contact form on [url] witn absolutely no success.
Two weeks later I've made no progress whatsoever beyond receiving a request to complete a survey rating the non-existent support I have received. (No human has responded to any of my messages) And all our messages to Hotmail are still disappearing into the email filtering black-hole.
At this point I'm starting to wonder if Hotmail is even usable as an email service anymore. I doubt many people will be bothering to jump through all the hoops I am to resolve this issue. I dread to think how much legitimate email is getting caught up in the Microsoft email filtering black-hole - never providing any notification or information to senders their messages were not delivered.
Meanwhile, our email arrives perfectly in Yahoo/Gmail who both pass our SPF records and DomainKeys signatures. Oh, and we're not engaging in any email marketing practises (i.e. spam).

I am in the process of gathering the peices to move from a dedicated box to my own hardware in a local colo and am undecided how best to choose the edge device.
The colo has a 30Mb pipe with about 10Mb of it being constantly used during biz hours. Another 10Mb is being allocated in the next couple of months. I want to be able to burst to the full 30Mb when needed.
I am getting 12 IP's allocated but will increase to 24 soon if all goes well (fingers crossed!).
I will have for starters just a single Proliant running dnp on 2008 with IIS, FTP, Mail, ns1 and a 2003 VM running my secondary ns.
What I am unsure of is the edge device and looking for others that have used either a 2800 series router or a ASA5500 series firewall in a similiar fashion. I know what the raw throughput of each device is, but raw benchmarks are not realworld numbers by any means.
I am looking at the 2801 with IOS Firewall turned on and hopefully even some inspects for FTP and HTTP traffic. The other option and one that I am less familiar with is to use the ASA5505 instead which will do my basic routing but supposedly provide more thourough inspects and advanced rules.
Does anyone have experiance with either of these in a hosting environment and have input on the realistic throughput one can expect from either device?
There is a signifigant cost difference with the ASA5505 being much cheaper but I am more familiar with IOS. Would anyone recommend a 1841 router instead?

I already rebooted httpd, exim, and imap server, and the server itself too.. and problem stills.

I can't get access to a certain site. I always get the page with:
network time out - server at *** takes to long to respons. More people have noticed this and apparently it only happens to people with certain specific providers. And not all the time. Some times they DO get access eventy to they belong to the same ISP. So I guess an ISP isn't blocking access to it otherwise it would be permenantly/The site administrator insists that certain ISP's are blocking his site. He's hosting it on his own server. The domain belongs is registered at namecheap.com.
If an ISP is blocking this site (if that's possible?), that would lead to that 'network timeout' page wouldn't it?
What is the most likely reason for getting a timeout page anyway?

Do you recommend a software firewall when behind a hardware firewall?
All of our servers are behind Cisco ASA 5505 firewalls which we rent from Liquidweb. All are being managed correctly and setup to there optimal levels. With hardware firewalls firmly in place, do you still recommend a software firewall such as APF or IPTables (we're talking linux); in our opinion we see it as an extra administration overhead. If this is however untrue, we will change out thinking.

I am considering adding offsite secondary backup servers in house on a full T1 (multiple? or a fractional T3?). Servers will be located in Ontario Canada. Does anyone know the average, upper, and lower cost for a full or even partial T1? I am trying to go as cheap as possible since the line probably wont be used unless the datacenter looses service.
If anyones had any experience with T1, as far as price, reliability, best providers etc

I have a dedicated server specs: AMD 3500+ 64 Bit CPU, 1 GB Ram, 160 GB Sata Drive. For 1 month, CPU load average reaches 40-50 value. This happens about 5-6 times in a day. When I stop httpd service for 30 seconds everything goes normal. I think this is not a DoS attack because it comes systematic, I dont believe no one makes this regularly except bots.
Maybe its a system service or a cronjob but it stops when I turn off httpd service?
How can I be sure about what's making this regularly load?
I also did set up a script which mail me when load average of system goes crazy and restart httpd service. But instant restart is not working to stop load increase.
