Server Taking Forever To Respond
I was on a 100mbps shared port with a dedicated server from FDC and I use it only for downloads. The downloads took a little long to start but once they did, were as fast as they could be. Thinking this was definitely a shared bandwidth problem, I ordered a dedicated port of 25mbps from FDC to fix it but it seems to have gotten worse. The website uses around 10/15mbps but it takes forever for the server to respond. Even logging into cPanel takes around 40/50 seconds for the dialog box to appear but everything is fast once I log into my cPanel. I also hired a sys admin to look into the server and He says everything is fine. I don't know what to do. I could increase my port bandwidth higher but it'll be disappointing if I do and it's just a waste of bandwidth (and money!)

Hosting Company Doesn't Respond - Is My Domain Lost
its not actually my domain but the other day an older lady contacted me frustrated because she had lost her login info for her dog kennel site. She tried for over a month to get a hold of the company but no one returns her calls or emails. She contacted me to see if there was anything I could do. The first thing I did was fire off an email and call the number I was given. Left a msg to call me back, waited a few days sent another email and made another phone call...nothing. So I did some sniffing around and found the company had changed names to Black Wire Marketing (from teknon media). So I sent emails to them and made phone calls....it was the same phone system as the previous number. My question is this, is there any protocol for recovering a website or more importantly the domain, if the hosting company has left town? The original site definitely resembles a flyby night reseller setup and not one that had a lot of thought put into it, wreaks of IM (why do IM people think they make good hosting service providers?).

I recently contacted 'theprimehost' with some pre-sales questions about their service. However I received no replies, so posted on their forums in hope to get a reply from Darrell. However I found that the thread was removed. The questions I asked were as below: 1. Can I host MODx/Textpattern on Primehost space? 2. Do I get access to mod_rewrite / SSH with your account? (As an individual and as reseller) 3. How much do you charge for a dedicated IP? 4. Do you oversell or allow overselling with reseller accounts? How is the bandwidth calculated? 5. How can I monitor the uptime of your servers? 6. Is domain alias enabled? 7. Does mail enable me to set vacation auto-replies? 8. How frequently do you backup data? 9. Do you accept payments for 2 years at a time? 10. I didn't find information about your datacenter on the site. Can you please tell me more about it? 11. Can I avail of the 20% discount in addition to the 2 for 1 offer? Till when are these two offers valid? DNS: Rootservers Respond With Wrong Nameservers For All Domains
Ive always thought that I knew the DNS principles, but now something really strange is going on. I have one domain (hosting.com), which runs the nameservers: ns1.hosting.com = server1 ns2.hosting.com = server2 ns3.hosting.com = server3 ns4.hosting.com = server4 And a lot of normal domains: client1.com and client2.com. These domains have ns1.hosting.com, and ns2.hosting.com configured as nameserver. Hosting.com also had these configured. The situation above worked well. Server3 and 4 were not used at all. The problems started when I migrated hosting.com to use server3 and server4. I transfered the zonefiles of hosting.com to these servers, and edited the WHOIS info to reflect these changes. This worked: hosting.com was working from server3 and server4. 10 mins later the first downtime-message came in. Client1.com could not resolve. A quick check using dig showed why: l.gtld-servers.net [192.41.162.30] ns3.hosting.com. ns4.hosting.com. Somehow the root servers think that the client1.com and client2.com domain also have changed nameservers. But those are not changed, the wois info still points to ns1 and ns2. So in some strange way the root servers now return ns3 and ns4 for all domains that use ns1.hosting.com & ns2.hosting.com in their WHOIS. I alway thought that the root servers got their info from the whois info of the domain. (Or better said: the registar). Why do the root servers return ns3 & ns4, while ns1 and ns2 are configured?

Dotable Suspends Account Doesn't Respond To Tickets
One of our accounts has been suspended by Dotable. It is under quota for diskspace and bandwidth and has been paid for in advance. Dotable will not respond to the ticket asking why the account has been suspended and what we have to do to get it back up. I have posted on the Dotable forum (in the 'Dotable Support Forum) about this but nobody has replied (I can't link to it because I don't have more than 5 posts). Has anyone got any suggestions about what I can do to find out why the account has been suspended and how to get it back up if Dotable doesn't reply?

Host That Doesnt Oversell
As posted in a previous thread I noted how I have been hosting with GeekStorage. After a little bit of investigation I found that a total of 593 (possibly more) website where being hosted on the same server as mine. I'm not sure if this is overselling but because I'm new to all this but I'm pretty sure it is. Now, I'm looking on switching from GeekStorage to someone who doesn't oversell. I would be fine with 10-20GB of storage and >150GB bandwidth. Budget is 5-10$ a month.

Pc-core.net Doesnt Care
so for over 3 weeks now pc-core.net had some problems with their servers and my accounts were just lost and no one answers my support tickets they just erase them, they disabled my account to support so i can only submit support tickets and click the link on the email. they told me to email cshelpdesk.com to get my account moved to a new server and cshelpdesk is just telling me im SOL. they dont have access to the server i was at and basically to F off. is there anything i can do? im basically just being ignored and they dont even have a number to them.

Webalizer Doesnt Work Using EnsimPro X
After migrating from the old ensim to the new "X", everything is working fine, except for the webalizer, I activated webalizer in one domain a few days ago.. and everyday Im trying to see the webalizer information, and it is always displaying this message: Could not retrieve the requested site report because the Web server logs have not yet been generated. These are generated once a day. Please check again later. I also tried forcing the log rotating for that site, but the problem still there. Server is RHES 4 with EnsimPro X, log generation and webalizer is activated for the domain.

Using Www Site Doesnt Resolve

The problem is that trying to browse the site trough http://www.site.com redirects me to [url] my main server IP address, this page shows a cPanel Welcome message. Monit + Qmail Alerts Doesnt Work
I configured monit to send me email alerts when apache is using too many resources but I cannot receive email alerts. I use Qmail. As for syslog, there is this message: monit[6473]: Sendmail: error receiving data from the mailserver 'localhost' -- Resource temporarily unavailable I tried to add for server name the name used in MX record but with the same result. Btw: other things configured in cron (eg. RKHUNTER) send me alerts OK.

Windows Doesnt Detected All 4GB RAM
I am using Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1 and i have recently set the computer up to 4GB RAM. I notice a problem occur error : When I start the computer, Bios detected all 4GB Ram. However, i have checked Total physical memory in General (My Computer-> Properties) doesnot detect all 4GB Ram. it only detect 3GB Ram. I have checked that this OS support up to 32GB . Why it doesn't detect all 4GB ? What happen to it? Mainboard : Intel chipset 915GL I did following the instruction in internet (exactly is Microsoft) is /PAE in boot.ini file. But, it doesnt work.

Http Messed Up But Not Http
where when I view my website through http using Firefox, it never stops loading. If I use IE, then I get a "page can not be displayed" error. If I use https then everything works fine. I have noticed that if I delete lines from the files, I don't have this problem. If I try viewing images (so I know it can't be an html of php problem) some look fine (the very small files). But, larger files, around 168 kb, load halfway and the second half is distorted (green and purple chunks and other random colors and lines). If I view the image through https, the image is perfectly fine! If I put my site through w3.org's validator (just to see what it would report) it says "500 Line too long (limit is 4096)". My website used to work, so I know there isn't any code in the pages that would cause this to happen. Is there an Apache setting I check? Perhaps it is sending a really long header that I can not see? I am not really sure what to do. I have made my site to force https but it's slow and not signed.

Ping Doesnt Work Until Remote Desktop Connection Is Made
I have a remote XP PC: 172.16.1.5 OpenVPN connection with route added for 192.168.2.0/24 to go via the VPN Now on the other end the network consists of: I have a OpenVPN server inside the lan on 192.168.2.245 Its default gateway is 192.168.2.1 I have 3 Windows Servers, 192.168.2.246, 247 and 248. All gateways are set to 192.168.2.1. I have a ethernet router on the network, 192.168.2.1, it has a route added for 192.168.0.0/16 to go via 192.168.2.245, and route added for 172.16.0.0/24 to go via 192.168.2.245 also). the 192.168.0.0/16 is incase any other LANs are connected at a later date, if computers saw any packets not on the the 192.168.2.x subnet they would be routed to the default gateway which would then pass them to the OpenVPN router. The trouble is, i can remotely connect and ping to the OpenVPN router fine and also the ethernet router, however when i ping any of the Windows boxes it times out. But i can open up Remote Desktop and connect to the windows box without problem, infact if i am running 'ping 192.168.2.246 -t' it will suddenly come alive but only after the RDP connection is made. Is this something funny with the routing? I want to keep the OpenVPN server internal to the network and i appreciate it is hitting the ethernet router then being passed to the OpenVPN but something is weird as it fires up RDP fine but not ping. No firewalls are enabled on any of the boxes. If i log into ssh on the OpenVPN router or ethernet router i can ping from that to the windows boxes fine. Its as if a ICMP redirect is issued, and all is well after the 1st connection. Not too sure but could anyone be kind enough to enlighten me?

Installed Apache Can Access Via LAN IP + Localhost But WAN IP Doesnt Work
I'm on windows vista. I've got an SDSL line into the house with a dedicated IP 62.etc. I've then got a Prestige 791R and all PC's plugged in to that. I've also got a wireless router for my Wii set up. Basically I've set up this DHCP thingy to start at 192.etc.3 and the Wireless router is at 192.etc.1 and the Prestige is at 192.etc.2 my pc is at 192.etc.9 This is about where my knowledge stops unfortunately. I have installed apache as the most basic default install I think you can and it seems to be working absolutely fine. I'm assuming I could also install PHP and MySQL etc and wouldn't have too much of a problem, however, my friend cannot seem to access the environment from the WAN IP and when I type in my WAN IP I get the prestige router's control panel. I read somewhere that I needed to forward port 80, now I can 'open' ports in the prestige control panel but I did try opening port 80 in the control panel and pointing it to my LAN IP (92.etc.9) but it didn't seem to work. I'm at a bit of a loss so if anyone could point me in the right direction I would be most grateful, just to clarify: //localhost loads the html file 100% //192.etc.9 loads the html file 100% //62.WANIP internally loads my prestige routers control panel //62.WANIP externally does not load a page (cannot be found) If you need any more info just let me know and I'll get it.

Forwarding/Default+POP3 Addy Doesnt Work - Piping/Webmail Works
My server which runs cPanel (license issued touchsupport) is having problems with handling emails. I use an external DNS provider (editdns.net) only for this 1 particular domain for handling many Records and such. Through their panel, I have added my mail server's record, i.e. "mailserver.tld". Now there is a problem with one part of the email issue. I have email piping setup and 1 webmail account setup too. These two work flawlessly. No issues with them. But email forwarding and default address doesn't work. I am confident that the email settings are working right because, when my clients send an email, piping works and my support system creates a new ticket. But the email forwarding/Default EMail doesn't. Not just that, I cannot even connect to the webmail account I created via POP3. I 100% sure that I used the correct login credentials and also tried the "+" and ":" for the username part. Just doesn't work. But I can access and read my emails via the Webmail (squirrelmail). Please help me out with this as soon as possible.

Uploading Flash Video Files To Host_A Doesnt Play Well But Plays FIne On Host_B
to upload some flash videos over to our web host. All the videos have been uploaded to << link removed >> and in there you will seea flash_video directory, in there should be a html file where you can double click and watch the flash video. Now go ahead and try it, click on the HTML file and click CONTINUE and try clicking on MODULE 1.. You will see a video play to the left but on the right are bunch of POWERPOINT slides that will appear as the guy continues to speak. THAT DOESNT SHOW.. Our website is hosted by xo.com Dont know much about the plan since its my 2nd day at the job.. But here is the weird part, i have uploaded the samething - same exact way to another web host and it plays fine, the PPTs show up fine.. What do you guys think it is? Ping Is Down, Http Is Up
My sites are up when I go to http and there is no slowdown but my monitors (panopta and pingdom) say that there is an outage in ping (only in ping, http is up). I tried pinging the server and there are packet loss up to 100% but the site is still up. I also used other online pinging tools (all-nettools.com, dnsstuff.com, etc.) and host unreachable. I tried contacting the provider but they say there are no network problem at this time. So I found this other site that's also hosted on the same provider and I can access their site but fails on ping.

Currently I have a URL that has HTTP. This has been given to the public. There is no doubt that they have added this URL to their favorites. In about 2 weeks, I will be applying an SSL certificate that would add an ‘S’ to the HTTP (e.g. https) My questions is: After applying this SSL certificate, which adds an “S”, will the link saved in my users’ favorites still work? Or do I have to add some HTML code that will redirect them?

I am maintaining a site that is totally on a secure folder. I have been asked to make only the things like the cart to be secure and to make the rest of the site non-secure. there is an https and an http folder on the server all of the site is now on the https folder. I thought all I needed to do is move the pages I wanted to be non-secure to the http folder and then use an absolute address when I needed to refer betweem them. I called my hosting people (the people who originally developer the site and made it all secure before handing to it me) and asked them about what all I need to do. they said its very complicated because I am dealing with 2 different root directories and didn't offer me much info on how to do it myself instead they just said if I can't figure it out they will do it for a price.

I have a question related to apache. Last night, I noticed the system was using 100% CPU. So I did "top" and saw a process, with command "http" using it all up. I tried restarting apache a few times because I though that was it, it didn't stop. Then I realized apache is httpd. I killed the process and haven't seen it since (least 12 hours now). What is this? Has anyone ever had this? Does this process belong to apache or something else and I just don't know it? If so, any general ideas on why it was using 100% CPU? I can post my configuration files if needed. I also did an rkhunter scan. Everything came up as not infected or OK there, so... MD5 MD5 compared: 0 Incorrect MD5 checksums: 0 File scan Scanned files: 342 Possible infected files: 0 Application scan Scanning took 168 seconds This is CentOS 4.4, Pentium D, 1gb RAM box, guarded by Smoothwall.

HTTP Requests With Crontab?
I set up a cron to run every minute & I'm running a PHP script by way of cron like wget http://example.com/some_script.php Now does each request of Cron is a seperate HTTP Request or what? Say my script takes more than 1 minute to execute completely but before its completed, its called again. So, will that effect the PHP script running because of previous HTTP Request or will it create a new HTTP Request & let the previous request finish its operation? Technically, it shouldn't block/affect the previous request, but I'm not sure!!

Recurring HTTP Exploit
I'm having a recurring issue where someone is getting a script into /tmp, taking down the webserver and setting up their stupid IRC bot on port 80. It's annoying because thus far I have not been able to track them down. As soon as it happens I'm combing through the logs trying to find out what PHP script (probably PHPBB or something like it from one of my customers) is letting them through but there is nothing in the logs. I've had this happen before but usually there's some trace in the logs like some ASCII encoded string. Right now I just have little to nothing to go on and it's quite annoying. I've combed all over the net but found next to nothing. RKHunter doesn't even know it exists.

I host videos in virtual directory : ( ex: video1.myweb.com ; video2.myweb.com ) Before Now : CentOS 4.5 Apache 1.3 JW FLV 3.14 1. the user click the play button 2. the player put on screen the first frame of video and start loading 3. the player when have loaded 3% start play the video 4. if the buffer become empty the player pause the reproduction and restart from the current time position when the buffer is full. Now CentOs 4.5 Apache 2 JW FLV 3.14 1. the user click the play button 2. the player doesn't start ( black screen ) --> probably in backgorund the download is started because: 3. the user click again the button --> and now the player start the reproduction of the video 4. if the player have not loaded all the video, the player stop with black screen 5. the user click on play and the player restart not from the current posizion but from the start of the video Clearly this depend on Apache bad configuration i think, but i have no idea how can i resolve, and on google i have not found any tutorial and documentation.

HTTP 500 Error
I recently transferred my domain names from MyDomain.com to GoDaddy.com and now whenever you click on a link to my site from the search results it produces an HTTP 500 Error. I am using HostGator and they said that it is "not what they assist with". I know it could be a number of things but they told me to check with my redirects and there is nothing in the .htaccess file.

I'm trying to solve an issue with certain customers timing out. In regards to the "http KeepAlive timeout" value.... When this timer expires, does the webserver have the tcp stack send a FIN? IF so, does it actually do it like at six or seven seconds? It's actually IBM IHS in this case.

Is there a way to construct an HTML request so that only HTML text is returned (without images or rich media)? I assume search engines do this - how? my friend's server is being attacked, the http processes shoots up causing the server load to go above 200 in minutes of starting httpd which causes server to die. this is how the apache web server's access_log would log a normal http request; ------------------------------------------------------ "xx.xxx.xx.xx - - [01/Jun/2007:22:13:21] "GET /folder/name.gif HTTP/1.1" 200 877 [url]"Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1)" ------------------------------------------------------ Today when the http load increased we saw hundreds of following requests; ------------------------------------------------------ "xx.xxx.xx.xx - - [01/Jun/2007:22:13:21] "GET /? HTTP/1.1" 200 16305 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1)" ------------------------------------------------------ You see the difference between a legitimate http access log entry and the above one is that the legitimate one shows the filename(GET /folder/name.gif) and domain name being requested whereas the second one shows ("GET /?") Above requests continously originate from 30 to 40 different ip addresses. Most of them russian ips, and many form US and canada to. When i do a grep "GET /?" in access log there are thousands of these which started just today. I cannot block each ips because i feel they have hundreds of IPs to initiate these requests from.

Proving A Concept.. HTTP
Would very much appreciate assistance here, I know just enough about Linux to be slightly dangerous and am coming at this issue from a business point of view not technical so excuse anything I say thats technically inept. On Sunday 5th August at 9am, I attempted to access our e-commerce site admin panel to check on sales. Nothing. 404.I tried the main site. Still nothing. I placed a call to Tech support and waited. Let's just ignore the customer service disaster that followed but it wasn't until 9.30pm that evening that I actually spoke to someone. They informed me that Apache had failed due to an oversized log file. I'm ok at this point, I understand what has happened. The technician moved the log file and then brought Apache back up and everything returned to normal. What I'm not sure about is that our 'provider' should provide a fully managed server with service monitoring. 5 point, including HTTP. They are now claiming that HTTP was not down for 12 hours and that their monitoring did not fail but that it was something else that caused me (or 3k customers who usually view my site on a Sunday) to be unable to view our pages. They can't tell me what it is but are adamant that HTTP was running. This is where I need help. a) Am I not correct in thinking that without Apache, there is no serving of web pages? b) That any monitoring system should have recognised this and alerted an engineer? c) How do I go about proving my point? I have root access.. I think.. I have a feeling its not full root. Are there any obvious steps, I would need very clear instructions if its to work, that I can take to prove whether I'm right or wrong? If not, is there anyone who comes highly recommended who can help me? Despite HTTP being down for over 12 hours and no pages being served, the 'provider' is being unhelpful.

What Else Would Be Blocking HTTP Requests
I have a guy who can't get to any of the 100 or so virtual hosts on my RHEL3 server. It's running the latest Apache RPM from RedHat. I also have mod_evasive and mod_security running. Here's what I know. The guy *CAN* connect via SSH and FTP. The guy *CAN* see the default web page when he hits the IP in his web browser (e.g. he types [url]into the address bar on IE). But when he uses any of the host names on the server he *CAN NOT* see anything. He gets timeout errors. His IP in NOT in ANY error logs, it's not in mod_evasive or mod_security, it's not in IPTABLES, it's not anywhere I can see. I must be missing something. Anyone have any ideas? What would be in front of Apache blocking his requests?

RPC Over Http For Email
I have always been interested in trying new things...but this one is a bit odd. I know Microsoft likes to do things different..but it's not always clear *why*. I now have a trial exchange account on one of my domains..because I was curious about the claims of redundancy, archiving and fault tolerance. This happened because I am 100% sure I "lost" a few emails recently. Nevertheless...I did I was told. Just to put this in perspective..this setup is so complex they have you download a installer to do it for you. Seriously...it uses proxies and only the fates know what else. It works, though. My question is this: Do I really need all this extra stuff? It is amazing the options you have to get mail from the servers: POP3, IMAP and webside I expected..but they have several fancy phones listed..and..(gasp) Mac access as well through entourage. They even have access through a cell phone's browser (nifty) Still..are there any advantages for all the rpc over http stuff? Or could I revert to a simpler (faster) setup without sacrificing the promise of better reliability? >>>I forgot to mention another little perk that comes with this.. even with the free trial..free outlook. I used to have outlook..and I did use many of it's features. It's great to have it back!

Using Htaccess To Redirect From Http To Https
if there is anyway to redirect my users to https no matter what page they are on using htaccess? I really don't fancey using full url extentions and changing them on every link on my site. I can get the homepage to redirect to https but not any other. If there is no way to do this does anyone know the shortest hyperlink to use the redirect?

On a cpanel / centos box: We are facing with a strange issue about URLs. At any web site in our reseller account in php pages when we add http:// or http%3A%2F%2F to the URL as a query string server returns Internal Server Error 500. For example when I try to access such page /index.php?q=http%3A%2F%2F[url] or /index.php?q=[url]I get this error.
