DNS: Rootservers Respond With Wrong Nameservers For All Domains
Jan 14, 2007
Ive always thought that I knew the DNS principles, but now something really strange is going on.
I have one domain (hosting.com), which runs the nameservers:
ns1.hosting.com = server1
ns2.hosting.com = server2
ns3.hosting.com = server3
ns4.hosting.com = server4
And a lot of normal domains: client1.com and client2.com. These domains have ns1.hosting.com, and ns2.hosting.com configured as nameserver. Hosting.com also had these configured.
The situation above worked well. Server3 and 4 were not used at all.
The problems started when I migrated hosting.com to use server3 and server4. I transfered the zonefiles of hosting.com to these servers, and edited the WHOIS info to reflect these changes. This worked: hosting.com was working from server3 and server4.
10 mins later the first downtime-message came in. Client1.com could not resolve. A quick check using dig showed why:
l.gtld-servers.net [192.41.162.30] ns3.hosting.com. ns4.hosting.com.
Somehow the root servers think that the client1.com and client2.com domain also have changed nameservers. But those are not changed, the wois info still points to ns1 and ns2.
So in some strange way the root servers now return ns3 and ns4 for all domains that use ns1.hosting.com & ns2.hosting.com in their WHOIS. I alway thought that the root servers got their info from the whois info of the domain. (Or better said: the registar). Why do the root servers return ns3 & ns4, while ns1 and ns2 are configured?

I've been told by a few people that something's wrong with my nameservers. But I'm not sure what it is that's wrong.
the site => www.visualpoetry.ca
the DNSs: ns1.visualpoetry.ca / ns2.visualpoetry.ca
a zone check says:
Quote:
---- warning ----
w: Nameservers are all part of the same AS
* Adv: ZoneCheck
To avoid loosing all connectivity with the autoritative DNS in case of a routing problem inside your Autonomous System, it is advised to host the DNS on different AS.
*
All the nameservers are part of the same Autonomous System (AS number 30058), try to have some of them hosted on another AS.
* generic
w: Host doesn't reply to ICMP requests (firewall?)
* ns1.wablue.info./66.90.101.202
* ns2.wablue.info./66.90.65.34
w: Reverse for the nameserver IP address doesn't match
* ns2.wablue.info./66.90.65.34
* ns1.wablue.info./66.90.101.202
I'm not sure how to interpret this.

I was looking for a tool that would allow me to enter a Nameserver, and it would then return the Domains that use that Nameserver in its DNS.
I see domaintools.com has a tool that does it, but it costs. Is there a free one available?

I have a client who can't change the nameservers on his .co.zw domain to my nameservers due to restrictions.
Is it possible to have him forward the domain to his IP and use it that way?
Does anyone have any experience with .co.zw domains?

I registred with ENOM a IO and a JP Domain and tried to enter my nameservers which are correct configured. I always use them for other com, net, org, info and biz domains which I registred with ENOM.
But for the JP and the IO Domains, ENOM is not accepting my nameservers and I get the following error message:
For the IO Domain:
Quote:
nRRPResponseCode 507
Nameserver ns1.mynameserver.com cannot be registered
Errors may be due to changes that may take 1 hour to 4 days to take effect at the
registry.
For the JP Domain:
Quote:
Updating nameservers failed. Please try again.531
I contacted ENOM and got the following responce:
Quote:
This error message usually indicates that the name server is not registered in the appropriate zone. Please contact the sponsoring registrar of mynameserver.com and request that they add the out-of-zone records for the name servers to be used in the .IO zone.
But what does this mean? Do I need to configure my nameservers different for IO or JP domains? Or do I need to register my nameservers somewhere for this domains?

I currently have a domain at Network Solutions and I am going to transfer that domain to Godaddy. I also have 2 nameservers that I am running associated with that domain (ns1.mydomain.com & ns2.mydomain.com) that are also registered with Network Solutions.
My question is what happens to those nameservers when the transfer takes place? Will Network Solutions remove them from their database at that time? My concern is when the transfer happens there will be no nameservers registered at Godaddy and my sites will be down. Anyone know how that works?

This is a legitimate request .. nothing dodgy.
Is it possible for me find out which domains are currently using 2 particular nameservers?
I think not but thought I'd confirm here.

Is it possible to get a list of domains that are using a specific pair of nameservers?
We've purchased several hosting companies over the years, and would like to consolidate the nameservers we are using and need to manage.
Thus.. we need to figure out which customers are using which nameservers.
So getting a list of which domains are using the nameservers we don't want to use any more would be a nice easy way. Then we can contact those specific customers only.

Man that was a badly worded title. My question is, for example any domain parking program, all you have to do is point your domain nameservers to the nameservers of the parking company. How can I do this for me?
Sorry if it's worded a bit weird, but I want people to be able to set their nameservers to mine, and that domain would become similar to a parked domain that I'd make through cpanel. Then I'm assuming I can use a little script or mod_rewrite to configure it (for example, parkeddomain.com would be rewritten to mysite.com/redir.php?a=parkeddomain.com).
1) What are some things/terms/programs I can look into for this?
2) Is this possible on shared hosting or would I need a dedicated?

my sys admin is currently in vacation and ovh staff cant help me much so i really appreciate if someone could help me tackle down this issue. I cant create ftp account at all heres what ovh said
Good morning,
Thank you to trust us, there is not my point of view or that of my colleague problem of the kernel compilation on your server or a file corrupted, and your Apache web server is functional, Status of the launch; after this command, via ssh:
/ etc / init.d / httpd start
Starting httpd: [OK]
We see that the port is open 80:

tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0: * LISTEN 14349/httpd
From the outside, at this precise moment, we are able to establish a connection on port 80:
Telnet ks357687.kimsufi.com 80
Trying 91.121.148.X ...
Connected to ks357687.kimsufi.com.

I was on a 100mbps shared port with a dedicated server from FDC and I use it only for downloads. The downloads took a little long to start but once they did, were as fast as they could be.
Thinking this was definitely a shared bandwidth problem, I ordered a dedicated port of 25mbps from FDC to fix it but it seems to have gotten worse.
The website uses around 10/15mbps but it takes forever for the server to respond. Even logging into cPanel takes around 40/50 seconds for the dialog box to appear but everything is fast once I log into my cPanel.
I also hired a sys admin to look into the server and He says everything is fine. I don't know what to do. I could increase my port bandwidth higher but it'll be disappointing if I do and it's just a waste of bandwidth (and money!)

I recently contacted 'theprimehost' with some pre-sales questions about their service.
However I received no replies, so posted on their forums in hope to get a reply from Darrell. However I found that the thread was removed. The questions I asked were as below:
1. Can I host MODx/Textpattern on Primehost space?
2. Do I get access to mod_rewrite / SSH with your account? (As an individual and as reseller)
3. How much do you charge for a dedicated IP?
4. Do you oversell or allow overselling with reseller accounts? How is the bandwidth calculated?
5. How can I monitor the uptime of your servers?
6. Is domain alias enabled?
7. Does mail enable me to set vacation auto-replies?
8. How frequently do you backup data?
9. Do you accept payments for 2 years at a time?
10. I didn't find information about your datacenter on the site. Can you please tell me more about it?
11. Can I avail of the 20% discount in addition to the 2 for 1 offer? Till when are these two offers valid?
I wonder why nobody at 'theprimehost' bothered to reply to my queries and deleted the thread so promptly. Anybody knows whats up with the guys? I have seen great reviews about them on the forum so this was unexpected.
I know Darrell is active on this forum - maybe he can clarify...

I have an Xitami server and am migrating to apache httpd. I have the regular server working fine. I tried configuring ssl, but no requests are coming through. I know 443 is open on the router because it works fine under Xitami. I checked the logs and it si starting fine. I am attaching my httpd.conf and the startup log. If I try to access the website using https, it just times out and nothing goes in the log file. I replaced my domain with domain.com. I have tried many different examples, but cannot get it to work and am not sure what to do.

One of our accounts has been suspended by Dotable.
It is under quota for diskspace and bandwidth and has been paid for in advance.
Dotable will not respond to the ticket asking why the account has been suspended and what we have to do to get it back up.
I have posted on the Dotable forum (in the 'Dotable Support Forum) about this but nobody has replied (I can't link to it because I don't have more than 5 posts).
Has anyone got any suggestions about what I can do to find out why the account has been suspended and how to get it back up if Dotable doesn't reply?

its not actually my domain but the other day an older lady contacted me frustrated because she had lost her login info for her dog kennel site. She tried for over a month to get a hold of the company but no one returns her calls or emails. She contacted me to see if there was anything I could do. The first thing I did was fire off an email and call the number I was given. Left a msg to call me back, waited a few days sent another email and made another phone call...nothing. So I did some sniffing around and found the company had changed names to Black Wire Marketing (from teknon media). So I sent emails to them and made phone calls....it was the same phone system as the previous number.
My question is this, is there any protocol for recovering a website or more importantly the domain, if the hosting company has left town? The original site definitely resembles a flyby night reseller setup and not one that had a lot of thought put into it, wreaks of IM (why do IM people think they make good hosting service providers?).

I'm using plesk with CentOS 6.6
After setting up some e-mail accounts over the plesk gui I tried to connect via a mail software (like thunderbird).
This failed with every combination of settings I tried. So I checked if the POP3/IMAP services are running correctly using telnet.
I connected using the following command:
Code:
telnet <host-ip> 110
The response was:
Code:
Trying <host-IP>...
Connected to <host-IP>.
Escape character is '^]'.
-ERR Cannot connect to POP server <host-IP> (<host-IP>:110), NB connect error 1460
Connection closed by foreign host.
Did I miss to enable a setting?
The Plesk gui schows me, that the corresponding services are running...

Will the nameservers work if the nameservers are pointed to a parking page?
For example:
I need to change my nameservers to ns1.mywebhost.com and ns2.mywebhost.com
(nameservers are made up)
These nameservers are from my web hosting service provider. When I visit the nameservers, it shows up a parking page from a domain parking service (let's say NameDrive parking page)
Will the nameservers function correctly and will my websites work? I have this question because usually the nameservers that I use, they always point to a CP page or something like that rather than a parking page.

I have 2 wordpress blogs, and I'd like a few different domains to be shared on each of them.
Using some exemples, suppose I have domains from domainA.com to domainE.com. domainA.com is my main domain and the others are addon domains.
Today Blog1 is using blog.domainA.com, and domainB.com and domainC.com use WebRedirect to blog.domainA.com. And Blog2 uses domainD.com with WebRedirect on domainE.com too.
To access a post like /2008/02/02/this-is-a-nice-post, it is available only at blog.domainA.com, and not by domains B and C. I'd like they 3 to be able to access all posts directly, without redirecting to domain A.
To do that, I suppose I'd need to do some config on cPanel. And also on wordpress, even if I replicate it over other domains it insists to redirect to its configured domain.
I was thinking on the possibility of using symbolic link (ln -s) on their folders to blog.domainA.com folder, but I don't have access to shell on SSH so I'd like to know if it would work before trying.
In a real exemple of what I want, these domains all share the same phpBB forum: forumpcs.com.br, extremepc.com.br, forumdohardware.com.br.
Do u know if symbolic link would work to share the same wordpress? And how to make wordpress stop redirecting to blog.domainA.com?

I'm just looking for some background information or a place where I can learn more about this.
Here's the problem:
The web site runs on a dedicated Apache server. There's 2 SSL certificates installed, one for e-commerce for https://www.mysite.com and one to help with the administrative interface for https://admin.mysite.com. I run a custom php application that forces the web page from http://www.mysite.com to https://www.mysite.com when going to an e-commerce page.
Generally everything runs Ok but a few times this year there has been a problem where the php application points to https://www.mysite.com/ecom.php but instead it gets https://admin.mysite.com/ecom.php and gets a page not found.
In discussing this with my web hosting company they claim they haven't changed anything but they do manage to fix the problem and get the web site working correctly again.
I generally figure that the web hosting company has done some type of maintenance on the web server and messed-up the dns entries or something for the SSL part of the web site but this is really outside my area of experience. I'm trying to understand what went wrong and where the entries are that determine when going to SSL which SSL certificate/URL is used.

My server with APF (firewall script) with BFD logs over 1215 events today of some hack user or bot trying to login to my server from various of IP trying many kind of usernames...
Is it possible to customize BFD to automatically ban the IP directly if the username they try to login with it was wrong 2 times?
For example the username is qwerty
The hack is trying with many usernames john, root, master, boot, etc...

A friend of mine has a server that the provider claims is a Core2Duo, but looking at /proc/cpuinfo, the cpu is shown as:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 000 @ 1.86GHz
What would cause this? I'm not saying the host is lying, I've just never seen this before and I haven't found anyone else with this problem on google. The processor is supposed to be a e6300, so the 1.86GHz speed is right. Also, this has happened on 2 different linux distros.

I have bought a dedicated server with FDC servers and installed a script. Initially everything was working fine but now the site is not accessible. Everything is alright with the script installed but looks like there is some issue with the DNS settings. When I ping the IP address (it's dedicated ip address) it gives me an error. When I Ping the domain name, it just closes the window after few mins. Can someone experienced with WHM help me to fix the DNS settings? Of course, I am ready to pay for your help (though i might not have a very higher budget)

I'm having a problem with my /usr. When I check it through WHM it's 100% full. But when I check it through SSH ( du -sh /usr ). it's almost 50% full
is there a way to let WHM recalculates the disk usage for /usr.
i already tried to empty it. but the 100% in WHM never changed. I deleted about 3GB of files. but in WHM, still saying 9.4GB used from 9.9GB
