What's The Proper PTR Record For A Shared Web/email Server On The Same IP
Jun 6, 2008
I have a dedicated server that is running apache and exim. While they're running from the same IP, I want the domain names to be www.mydomain.com for http and mail.mydomain.com for SMTP.
What I've done so far is set up A records for *.mydomain.com and mail.mydomain.com to point to the same IP address.
My MX record points to mail.mydomain.com.
My exim primary_hostname is configured as mail.mydomain.com.
Now I'm trying to get the PTR record set correctly so that outbound email doesnt get trapped by spam filters. So in this case should my PTR record point my IP to mail.mydomain.com and not mydomain.com or does it not matter?
Is it strange that an RDNS lookup to the primary IP would return my mail server like that?

I run my server on my home PC.
I have hosting through GoDaddy for now, but it is in the process of being transfered to my dyndns account.
I like to use my home server's e-mail account that I setup via hMailServer.
My domain is 347media.com.
I would like to know the proper procedure for setting up an MX record through the registrar.
My main concern is that I don't always have this computer on, so I'd like to setup a secondary MX record that will catch my e-mails in-case I my computer is shut off.

I'm having difficulty sending an email to another email address (with a different domain) which is on the same VPS.The trouble is, on the other domain's VPS control panel, within the DNS settings, the MX records have been pointed externally (to an exchange server). Their email is turned off. But bizarrely, their mailbox is full.
It seems as though Plesk is ignoring the MX records, and sending MY email internally to the OTHER domain's mailbox on the same VPS.How do I get Plesk to send my mail to the correct EXTERNAL MX records?

So I've just got a server with 2xSATA raid 1 (OS, cpanel and everything in here) and 4xSCSI raid 10 (clean).
Which one do you guys think will give the best performance:
1. Move mysql only to 4xSCSI raid 10
2. Move mysql and home folder to 4xSCSI raid 10

I have just recently purchased a shared hosting package and am having some trouble with my email. I have set it up to work with Microsoft Outlook 2003 and it works perfectly when it comes to SENDING emails. Sadly, it doesn't work at all when RECEIVING emails comes into play.
The incoming server is set to port 110. And I'm pretty sure my incoming server address is correct because, well, Outlook says it's correct :p

I have two companies hosted at Futurequest. I've used them before and have been and still am happy with them. Along with shared hosting for two companies, we have email. In one account we use less than 25 email accounts, and total disk space allowed for web hosting and email is maximum 1GB. We use less than 500MB for our web site so that leaves us on average 20MB per email account. We're running into problems with disk usage due to the way some people are using their email accounts. Most of us use Outlook Express for email. I have options set to delete when downloaded, so I rarely use much disk space. Others delete 1-10 days after downloaded from server, and those can add up to some considerable disk space usage for email.
Looking at similar small shared web hosting (<$25 per month), most seem to have similar limits. For example, Dotster has a 200GB disk usage limit, but email is 2GB, and since number of email accounts is advertised as unlimited, that 2GB limit must be total for all email accounts. I've been told that these companies focus on website hosting, not on email, and they suggest customers needing larger email accounts look at other email services.
Why is this? In the case of Dotster, why 200GB total disk space, but only 2GB for email disk space? The powers that be here insist that disk space is cheap - under $1 per GB - so limits like this aren't based on cost of disk space. It's a difficult argument for me to refute - why are the email disk space usage limits so low?
As for alternatives, I found this thread here about Hosted Email Options: [url]showth...=EMAIL+STORAGE
Is this type of service what I should be looking at - leaving web hosting where it is but moving our email to one of these? I hate to move our email again. I could increase our account at Futurequest to allow on average 60MB per mailbox but someday the problem's going to come up again. That's probably less costly than a separate email provider, no extra work, and he problem should go away for quite a while.

Right now I have maybe 6 personal sites that I keep on my new VPS. They are mixed together in the public_html file. Ex: coolsite.com and anothersite.com are found in public_html/coolsite/ and public_html/anothersite/ so the result is somewhat messy with many folders. What is the proper way to add sites so I have access to each site separately so it is not so cluttered? Or am I doing this right?

Is there any conventional wisdom on WHT about which shared hosting providers have highly reliable email service?
The provider I have now has very good web hosting service but their email services tend to bitbucket far too much mail for comfort. Reliable delivery and reception for the half a dozen emails I might send/receive a day (it's a personal use site) is I hope not too much to ask without needing to pay and arm and a leg for the privilege.

I have done web development for myself for many years and have also launched a very successful video game website. But I have NEVER used what I would consider a proper workflow for developing.
I have never used a test server and never used SVN. All of my work up to now I have done using Dreamweaver and Visual Studio. Using the pitiful source control in dreamweaver (essentially just marks files as read only) and always used a web host I pay for as my platform. Its takes a while to test things as uploading takes a quick second or 2 and I run into problems making test pages and then when it comes time to roll them out to the live version of my site...well...it can get complicated.
I'm taking it upon myself to start learning Ruby along with the Rails framework. And I want to clean up my act a bit. I'm would like yalls advice on how best to set up a better/more professional work flow. I have a number of computers and would like to set one up as a dedicated test platform. I would like to do my development and coding on my windows PC but run the webhost, mySQL server, a mySQL front end, PHP, Ruby, etc on my linux box. Whats the best way to manage this? Is the best way to just ftp them over to the right directories? Or am I totally missing the boat on a much better way to push new code to my test bed? Is there a linux distro of choice out there that comes bundled and set up with all those things pretty much out of the box?

how ya all debug email scripts that you create on a shared host when you don't have access to the sendmail/qmail/etc log files?
For example I have created two scripts. One uses the SwiftMailer PHP class and the other uses the PEAR class. The SwiftMailer one works just fine. The PEAR one does not and I have no clue as to why not.
My web hoster has graciously offered to let me look at the log file (I think) but that's only a temporary solution to the long term problem of debugging other email related scripts I might write in the future. Not to mention that I can't rely on every hoster allowing me to view such a thing (should I ever switch hosting companies).
Shared hosting is just fine for me at this point so switching to VPS or other hosting solutions is not neccessary (I'll just use the SwiftMailer class if it's the only one that will work but, it would be nice to know why the PEAR or other scripts may not work).

All I have is a big forum to host and I dont have much time to manage it - so a managed server is preferred. I also want cPanel on it.
futurehosting.biz really appealed to me but I was wondering if there was anything better, in terms of storage, bandwidth and RAM (also CPU, i dont know how much futurehosting give).
I would prefer if they had some kind of 24/7 live chat.

I am currently having a few technical difficulties with configuring my PLESK server to accept an A Record from another domain. Perhaps I have been going about this all wrong but I will explain what I am trying to do and how I have currently been trying to get it to work. Hopefully you might have a suggestion for me to try.
We currently run an On-Demand web design platform. This CMS can be completely rebranded for our Partners who can then sell this facility to their clients. There is only one installation of the code base but we need to give our partners a their own web address to access the cms.
For example:
cms.altstudio.com.au
cms.pcgraphicart.com.au
cms.pcgraphicart.com.au has been set up as a domain alias. The reason this is working is because the primary domain pcgraphicart.com.au is also hosted on this server.
So I thought if the partner has their domain delegated elsewhere then I could simply get them to create an A record for their chosen subdomain and point it to our IP address, then I could configure the domain alias again for their particular A record and hey presto. Unfortunately not so easy.
Here are two of the examples of what is happening
cms.newlight.com.au - their root domain is delegated elsewhere, but they have created an A-record for that subdomain and pointed it to 202.60.87.185. Now it reaches my server as I see a PLESK error page at that address.
At this stage I don't really know what to try to get PLESK to register that entry. I have created a domain alias for cms.newlight.com.au on the cms.altstudio.com.au account but it didn't pick things up.
Another example is cms.abconsulting.com.au

We had written a free file sharing website like rapidshare,2shared,4shared n .... .
We let people add as many file as they want to upload.
People also search and browse among files.
Do we need a dedicated server or a dedicated VPS ?
How much should the configuration be? i mean How much Ram?
We need to add extra hard disks in the close future.
Maybe sometime we need to add clustering and ... .
Please tell me in detail about the initial configuration needed to run this website so we ll be sure that the site will never be down or lacks of hard disk and ram or CPU.
and tell me your experience in best dedicated services with online support which will be good friends.

The BV forums are dead, the webhosting is up and down like a yoyo, mail is intermittent.
Not just me but fellow users are experiencing the same.
Support tickets are going unanswered (accounts & tech. support).
