Where Is PTR Record On A *nix Server?
Jan 25, 2008
Which file do I need to open on a Unix server to add a PTR record? Sorry, I'm clueless about DNS but I think if I could find the file, I can add the PTR record by piecing together what I've found through searching the Internet.

I have been trying to run my emails accounts from my dedicated server, or just put the emails back to the go daddy secure server net. But I can get this right. Can someone help me? I am using the simple control panel. I went to use a dedicated server because this will give some freedom, but I just realize I may not be ready for this servers yet.

I am currently having a few technical difficulties with configuring my PLESK server to accept an A Record from another domain. Perhaps I have been going about this all wrong but I will explain what I am trying to do and how I have currently been trying to get it to work. Hopefully you might have a suggestion for me to try.
We currently run an On-Demand web design platform. This CMS can be completely rebranded for our Partners who can then sell this facility to their clients. There is only one installation of the code base but we need to give our partners a their own web address to access the cms.
For example:
cms.altstudio.com.au
cms.pcgraphicart.com.au
cms.pcgraphicart.com.au has been set up as a domain alias. The reason this is working is because the primary domain pcgraphicart.com.au is also hosted on this server.
So I thought if the partner has their domain delegated elsewhere then I could simply get them to create an A record for their chosen subdomain and point it to our IP address, then I could configure the domain alias again for their particular A record and hey presto. Unfortunately not so easy.
Here are two of the examples of what is happening
cms.newlight.com.au - their root domain is delegated elsewhere, but they have created an A-record for that subdomain and pointed it to 202.60.87.185. Now it reaches my server as I see a PLESK error page at that address.
At this stage I don't really know what to try to get PLESK to register that entry. I have created a domain alias for cms.newlight.com.au on the cms.altstudio.com.au account but it didn't pick things up.
Another example is cms.abconsulting.com.au

I run an online music archive site . Djs can upload their mixes to share and we also archive radio shows for people to listen back to.
Basically I was wondering if it would be possible to build a secondary server that could do this for me.
The secondary server could have multiple cast rippers running and could record internet radio shows, then once finished recording transfer it could send them over to my primary server to add to the website for people to download.

I was using dedicated server from ev1servers.net.
They are excellent. One of the feature .. unless I forgot was the ability to add our domain record to their DNS server by ourselves.
I think it was controlcommand, or commandcenter, or was it controlcentre , I forget.
This feature is very fascinating as I can make my site up and running within second.
[I know where to register domain with real time activation, and I have reseller account with WHM]
So everytime I have an idea of making a website. All of this cycle can be done within seconds , and my site is up and running. [register domain, create account in WHM, and populate the DNS record]
Anybody know any dedicated server provider which offering this kinda feature this day?

I have a dedicated server that is running apache and exim. While they're running from the same IP, I want the domain names to be www.mydomain.com for http and mail.mydomain.com for SMTP.
What I've done so far is set up A records for *.mydomain.com and mail.mydomain.com to point to the same IP address.
My MX record points to mail.mydomain.com.
My exim primary_hostname is configured as mail.mydomain.com.
Now I'm trying to get the PTR record set correctly so that outbound email doesnt get trapped by spam filters. So in this case should my PTR record point my IP to mail.mydomain.com and not mydomain.com or does it not matter?
Is it strange that an RDNS lookup to the primary IP would return my mail server like that?

Scenario: I have a website, www.site.com, hosted on an ensim 4 box. The MX records for that zone point to google apps for mail services. Some of the alerting tools my client use are too stupid and don't support SSL or TLS, so they don't work with the pop/smtp services google apps uses.
Can I setup this ensim box to utilize it's smtp server to send mail as user@site.com even though the mail is hosted by google apps?
I guess it's kinda like e-mail spoofing.

i have a simple reseller account to give my clients some hosting space. one specific client keeps the domain registered with his current domain registrar. to point the domain name at his new hosting account (provided by me) he's saying that he just needs the "a-record", not the nameservers that i gave him originally. i can not seem to find an a-record for my hosting accounts anywhere ...
my hosting support is saying the client will just need the IP address. but afaik ip address is not == a-record
can anyone clarify what an a-record is exactly and whether or not it can be interchanged with an ip address?
this is for a .co.uk domain name and my reseller account is with hostgator

Common scenario; email sent from our server to Yahoo does not arrive. It is so bad that we have a 23% order completion rate for Yahoo users. To compare, Gmail is 83%.
We send emails to confirm registration, and also to remind users to complete their invoices.
Our setup is like so:
User registers at registration.domain.com, a different server to domain.com.
Upon registering an email is sent to the user using the registration.domain.com web server but with a from address of info@domain.com
Our info@domain.com email address is hooked up to Google Apps as this is who we use to manage our inbox.
how to construct our SPF records? I am slightly confused as we have a mail server, a different reply to domain and MX records with Google..

I would like to setup SPF record for my domain. I am using Google Apps for the domain.
But I will also be sending mail from my vps server. Hence what should I use?
Quote:
v=spf1 a include:aspmx.googlemail.com ~all
or
Quote:
v=spf1 a mx ~all
If both works, which one is better? I will be sending emails from subdomains of my main site too, so do I need to anything special for that?
I am using ~all instead of -all, because I sometimes send emails from my development server(which is having dynamic ip). Hence I don't want those emails to rejected, even if they are marked as spam.[url]

If my SPF record would be the following: domain.com. 14400 IN TXT "v=spf1 ip4:78.129.143.155 a mx a:.mail.saunalahti.fi -all"
Would mail sent from whatever@domain.com get sent through gw01.mail.saunalahti.fi (Would the SPF record allow it?) or would I have to specify a:gw01.mail.saunalahti.fi in the SPF record?

Currently we use a short SPF record that is inserted to the customers DNS file when the account is created....
"v=spf1 a mx ~all"
I was wondering do you guys/gals have a standard SPF record, one that is tested and works or do you think the above entry is sufficent?

how to add an SPF record to my web hosting company's domain? The thing I'm scared of is blocking or messing up what works fine now.
My server (say myhostingcompany.com) is a mix of all kinds of services, some customers send mail through my server, some through they're ISP (so they're domain's DNS is with me) and all kinds of strange things.
How can I add a "risk free" SPF record?

Here are the scenarios :
1. This Dedicated Server don't have main domain name but I use something like hostname.domain.com for the hostname.
2. The nameservers I use are something like ns21.domain.com and ns22.domain.com which I registered it already on my domain registrar.
3. Domain.com is use on other Dedicated server
Are these kind of setup okay? or should I really changed the hostname.domain.com to something else that is hosted on the same server?

I have a server: serverA.maindomain.com
and another serverB.maindomain.com
The DNS records for maindomain.com are on serverA
so the serverB A record is on serverA which is fine (i am aware it's a risk if serverA goes down).
If I'm setting a sub domain of serverB such as site1.serverB.maindomain.com I have to setup an A record on serverA for the subdomain and I don't want to have to do this every time.
Is there anyway I can setup a wildcard A record for subdomains such as:
*.serverB.maindomain.com

I cannot use DN's so Ive had to use dot in place of periods below)
I have a domain name registered with Netfirms - lets call it mydomain dot com. I didnt want to use their hosting services, just reg'd the DN with them. I host the mydomain dot com website on my home PC. In order to get both mydomain dot com and www dot mydomain dot com to resolve to my Home IP address I had to create an A record for each on the Netfirms Domain manager GUI.
I have since purchased Hosting services from Webhostingpad dot com and now wish to move/point my mydomain dot com and www dot mydomain dot com to my webhostingpad dot com hosted account.
When I spoke with Webhostingpad about pointing mydomain dot com to them they said all I had to do was use their Name Servers on the Netfirms side and I should be set. When I asked 'what about the A records? Do I need to create A records on their side for mydomain dot com and www dot mydomain dot com' they said 'Nope' - once its pointed to their NS I should be all set
My questions are:
- Why did I need to create A records on the Netfirms side to point to my Home IP?
- Will what Webhostingpad is saying work (once I point my DN to their NS, and remove the existing A records on the Netfirms side, I should be good to go)
- Will both mydomain dot com and www dot mydomain dot com resolve properly to my webhostingpad server?
I just want to make sure this works before I do it and potentially down my website.
