Sendmail :: Sorry, Your Helo Has Been Denied

Jan 8, 2008

I am on a VPS and set everything up myself. When I try and email a friend, I get it bounced back with the following message (with his email filtered):

<<< 550-5.7.1 {mx078} Sorry, your helo has been denied. <<< 550 5.7.1 [url] 550 5.1.1 <**********@gmx.co.uk>... User unknown

I'm pretty sure the user isn't unknown, I have checked and it is his email address. Can anyone tell me what is wrong, and if the problem is on my end or his, and if my end how I might go about fixing it?

SASL Authentication For Mail Server (Sendmail/Postfix)

Mar 18, 2007

I recently moved to virtual dedicated hosting for my website, mainly because I wanted a better mail server to work with to manage a mailing list.

I have a few PHP software scripts for different things: managing affiliates and email marketing.

I want to send mail using both of those via SMTP on my new server. They both have a place to type in the host and username/password.

The problem I am noticing is SASL Authentication. They attempt to connect to the host without any trouble. However, the affiliate software fails SASL Authentication every time I try to send an email or test the email system.

Email marketing software connects when I manually send a campaign. However, users are supposed to immediately receive a confirmation mail upon opting in. In this case, it shows up as an attempt in the mail log, but it fails SASL Authentication. I don't know if it's a problem with the software or not, since it attempts to connect but fails, yet connects successfully in other cases.

My question is this: Is there another way around this? I've contacted my host to double check on the appropriate username/password to pass authentication. I will also be contacting the software developers after I receive an answer.

But if nothing comes of it, is there any way around it? Is there a place where I can have it automatically authenticate if the email is coming from a certain user, or if the attempt is being made from the same server (everything sits on the same server, I use localhost in the software to connect to the mail server). Since I am the only person who has access to the server and uses it, it seems safe to automatically authenticate if the request is being asked by the server itself...

I'm just looking for other alternatives if the software does indeed have a problem and I cannot figure it out.

Keep in mind I am very new to all this server and root access. Just a few days ago I was on a shared hosting plan, so I didn't have any access to anything. With that in mind, I know very little about mail servers, although I've been learning more over the past few days. I only stumbled upon the mail logs on my server recently by browsing files in the control panel (I'm not familiar with SSH, although I do have access to it)

See Who Is Relaying Using Port 587

Dec 2, 2007

One of my clients has a couple of servers from me.

In the course of my work, I've setup various people to send mail via one of these servers, using SMTP on port 587.

Can I see on the server who has been using it to send via port 587? I didn't keep a record, the server is closing down and I'd like to let as many people as possible know that they need to change their SMTP settings .. there are only 50 or so I think.

How To Dump All Relaying Email?

How to dump all relaying email?

I have a domain that used to have a huge members list with thousands of email addresses. Now that I enabled its web site, the server attempts to relay email meant for those harvested addresses. Also, spam relayers picked up that the DNS is live and try to use the domain to deliver spam What can I do with the MX records in order to dump all email without the server handling it? Currently all email is set to :blackhole:

DNS / Mail Issue With Postini Relaying

Feb 14, 2008

I've got a domain name ("problemdomain.com") on my server (CentOS 4, WHM/cPanel) that has been set up with Postini for quite some time. All has been working & routing correctly. I recently changed to a new server with a new IP address. I transferred the account so that the DNS is setup identically on the new server. The only thing that changed is the main server IP, and the IP addresses that ns1.myserver.com and ns2.myserver.com resolve to. That propagation went through today and should be well set in.

Now, whenever you send an email to someone on this domain, it gets bounced back with the following:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

mail@problemdomain.com

Technical details of permanent failure:
PERM_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 13): 550-exprod8mx214.postini.com (psmtp.com) [64.18.3.114] is currently not
550-permitted to relay through this server. Perhaps you have not logged into
550-the pop/imap server in the last 30 minutes or do not have SMTP
550 Authentication turned on in your email client.

The way I have the DNS setup on the server for the MX records is as follows:
problemdomain.com., 14400, IN MX, 100, laserskinsurgery.com.s8a1.psmtp.com.
problemdomain.com., 14400, IN MX, 200, laserskinsurgery.com.s8a2.psmtp.com.
problemdomain.com., 14400, IN MX, 300, laserskinsurgery.com.s8b1.psmtp.com.
problemdomain.com., 14400, IN MX, 400, laserskinsurgery.com.s8b2.psmtp.com.

This DNS is exactly the way it was setup before when it was working. Any ideas what could be causing this?

I use ConfigServer Security & Firewall http://www.configserver.com/cp/csf.html which can block IP's that exceed a number of SMTP connections per hour. But these are thousands of IPs and proxies. Is there anything else I can do?

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Find Spam Relaying User?

Jun 20, 2014

I facing a serious problem with my qmail and plesk 11.0.9.I found the way spammer did with my server by listening everything on port 25. Maybe he know the RCPT hosts of mine, and they send emails with random username but with domain hosted on my Plesk. (user1@mydomain.com, user2@ my domain.com, ... userxxx@mydomain.com).

qmail only check domain in RCPT if spammer input:"mail from user1@mydomain.com" - (with out ":") - no email address on my server.then server reply: 550, no mailbox here by that name. (#5.7.17)

But qmail check username and domain if spammer input:""mail from: user1@mydomain.com" - (with ":") - no email address on my server. Then server reply: 250 OK..This is really weird! I tried with all my plesk server, this bug still effected.Click to expand...

My domain is 347media.com.

I would like to know the proper procedure for setting up an MX record through the registrar.

My main concern is that I don't always have this computer on, so I'd like to setup a secondary MX record that will catch my e-mails in-case I my computer is shut off.

Setting Up Proper WebDev Workflows

May 18, 2008

I have done web development for myself for many years and have also launched a very successful video game website. But I have NEVER used what I would consider a proper workflow for developing.

I have never used a test server and never used SVN. All of my work up to now I have done using Dreamweaver and Visual Studio. Using the pitiful source control in dreamweaver (essentially just marks files as read only) and always used a web host I pay for as my platform. Its takes a while to test things as uploading takes a quick second or 2 and I run into problems making test pages and then when it comes time to roll them out to the live version of my site...well...it can get complicated.

I'm taking it upon myself to start learning Ruby along with the Rails framework. And I want to clean up my act a bit. I'm would like yalls advice on how best to set up a better/more professional work flow. I have a number of computers and would like to set one up as a dedicated test platform. I would like to do my development and coding on my windows PC but run the webhost, mySQL server, a mySQL front end, PHP, Ruby, etc on my linux box. Whats the best way to manage this? Is the best way to just ftp them over to the right directories? Or am I totally missing the boat on a much better way to push new code to my test bed? Is there a linux distro of choice out there that comes bundled and set up with all those things pretty much out of the box?

What's The Proper PTR Record For A Shared Web/email Server On The Same IP

Jun 6, 2008

I have a dedicated server that is running apache and exim. While they're running from the same IP, I want the domain names to be www.mydomain.com for http and mail.mydomain.com for SMTP.

What I've done so far is set up A records for *.mydomain.com and mail.mydomain.com to point to the same IP address.

My MX record points to mail.mydomain.com.

My exim primary_hostname is configured as mail.mydomain.com.

Now I'm trying to get the PTR record set correctly so that outbound email doesnt get trapped by spam filters. So in this case should my PTR record point my IP to mail.mydomain.com and not mydomain.com or does it not matter?

Is it strange that an RDNS lookup to the primary IP would return my mail server like that?

Well Supported VPS Required

Nov 3, 2007

I moved a web site i developed from shared hosting at fasthosts due to performance issues and beacause I needed a more flexible platform.

I decided to go with webfusion as i'd seen them in the press everywhere.

Everything was working fine and performance was good - however the emails sent from the site (worked fine on shared hosting)- using php mail bounced. was getting ...

<sal@goldplateuk.com>:
213.171.216.118 does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 550 <anonymous@lvps212-241-216-214.vps.webfusion.co.uk>:
Sender address rejected: Domain not found
Giving up on 213.171.216.118.

However - sending to a hotmail address would work.

I referred to support - first line said they'd have to talk to second line support and get back to me.

Eventually - they called back and basically said everything looks ok on the server - they don't know why it's happening - do some analysis of your own - go on google.

Generally support isn't too hot - 2 days for a reply on a ticket. To cut a long story short -

does anyone know of a VPS host who would know what was wrong and would be able to help someone who is new to the VPS scene as i need to move host fast as the customer wants this resolved asap.
£25/month top budget.

Proper Procedure When Leaving A Host - Do You "nuke" Your Space

Sep 8, 2007

I'm thinking of consolidating some of our shared hosting and vps accounts into a couple of other vps accounts.

It's just occurred to me that I've never really abandoned a host before and that I have a lot of stuff on there I don't want in the wrong hands.

Sure, hosts should be legally responsible and wipe the space but why trust what you don't know for a fact (I even have one host that had stuff hidden in my "fresh" account, buried in the logs, so apparently they were reusing something along the line as a template).

Should I, and how would I, wipe out the space properly?

Mailserver / Admin Required

Aug 1, 2008

I'm having some serious issues.. I moved to a new dedicated server company and found out that the IP block I was on was blacklisted with 5 anti-spam lists.

However, the company is great and they have managed to get the IP block out of every single black list.

However, I am still having issues. My server does not seem to be listed on any blacklists but emails sent out to various places, get bounced back with the following types of errors.

Any suggestions or advice? Any server administrators who think they can fix this? Please PM me with your quote.

Rack Space Required In GlobalSwitch 1 Or 2

We are an established owner of three data centres outside of London. We are looking at either a half or full lockable rack in either Global Switch 1 or 2 (ideally with 24/7 managed hands) in order to terminate a backhaul circuit there.

We are also interested in a similar arrangement in TH-E.

We only require around 2 amps as the space will only house an edge router and switch for inter/cross connects.
