Setting Up Proper WebDev Workflows

May 18, 2008

I have done web development for myself for many years and have also launched a very successful video game website. But I have NEVER used what I would consider a proper workflow for developing.

I have never used a test server and never used SVN. All of my work up to now I have done using Dreamweaver and Visual Studio. Using the pitiful source control in dreamweaver (essentially just marks files as read only) and always used a web host I pay for as my platform. Its takes a while to test things as uploading takes a quick second or 2 and I run into problems making test pages and then when it comes time to roll them out to the live version of my site...well...it can get complicated.

I'm taking it upon myself to start learning Ruby along with the Rails framework. And I want to clean up my act a bit. I'm would like yalls advice on how best to set up a better/more professional work flow. I have a number of computers and would like to set one up as a dedicated test platform. I would like to do my development and coding on my windows PC but run the webhost, mySQL server, a mySQL front end, PHP, Ruby, etc on my linux box. Whats the best way to manage this? Is the best way to just ftp them over to the right directories? Or am I totally missing the boat on a much better way to push new code to my test bed? Is there a linux distro of choice out there that comes bundled and set up with all those things pretty much out of the box?

VPS Right For A Small Webdev Company

Jul 11, 2008

I'm starting a small company which will do custom web development and hosting. Right now we have appr 10 clients with no heavy traffic.

I've been thinking about buying a VPS for the hosting of these sites, in order to have more control over the server, instead of using a shared hosting, but i'm wondering if VPS is overkill.

Hopefully we'll get more customers and need more space and bandwidth as time goes by...

Best Hosting For A Small Scandinavian Webdev Company

Sep 10, 2008

We're a small company developing with PHP (Code Igniter and WordPress) and need somewhere to host our pages.

Today we have a dedicated server managed by me, but i realize it's a little too much for me and we're looking into moving to a shared host, preferrably, but we're open to others solutions (VPS?) as well.

As per now our customer's pages are rather low traffic, the highest is approx 1000 per day, and the other ones are maybe a 1000 more, so 2000 in total. Maybe a little redundancy should be added as well.

So our requirements are (in no particular order):

- SSH access
- Unlimited domains (or at least 50)
- 10-20 GB/day bandwidth (as the large site hosts some videos ~10-40 MB/video)
- ~5-10 GB disk space
- Unlimited MySQL-dbs
- European - we're in Scandinavia, but that's not required for host
- Preferrably green
- Price is not the most important - we can pay up to 35€-45€/month
- CP could be cPanel or custom. I tried Plesk but i seemed quite horrible to me
- And of course: Linux

Proper Way To Add Multiple Sites

Apr 22, 2008

Right now I have maybe 6 personal sites that I keep on my new VPS. They are mixed together in the public_html file. Ex: coolsite.com and anothersite.com are found in public_html/coolsite/ and public_html/anothersite/ so the result is somewhat messy with many folders. What is the proper way to add sites so I have access to each site separately so it is not so cluttered? Or am I doing this right?

Seting Up A Proper MX Record

Dec 9, 2007

I run my server on my home PC.

I have hosting through GoDaddy for now, but it is in the process of being transfered to my dyndns account.

I like to use my home server's e-mail account that I setup via hMailServer.

My domain is 347media.com.

I would like to know the proper procedure for setting up an MX record through the registrar.

My main concern is that I don't always have this computer on, so I'd like to setup a secondary MX record that will catch my e-mails in-case I my computer is shut off.

What's The Proper PTR Record For A Shared Web/email Server On The Same IP

Jun 6, 2008

I have a dedicated server that is running apache and exim. While they're running from the same IP, I want the domain names to be www.mydomain.com for http and mail.mydomain.com for SMTP.

What I've done so far is set up A records for *.mydomain.com and mail.mydomain.com to point to the same IP address.

My MX record points to mail.mydomain.com.

My exim primary_hostname is configured as mail.mydomain.com.

Now I'm trying to get the PTR record set correctly so that outbound email doesnt get trapped by spam filters. So in this case should my PTR record point my IP to mail.mydomain.com and not mydomain.com or does it not matter?

Is it strange that an RDNS lookup to the primary IP would return my mail server like that?

Proper Procedure When Leaving A Host - Do You "nuke" Your Space

Sep 8, 2007

I'm thinking of consolidating some of our shared hosting and vps accounts into a couple of other vps accounts.

It's just occurred to me that I've never really abandoned a host before and that I have a lot of stuff on there I don't want in the wrong hands.

Sure, hosts should be legally responsible and wipe the space but why trust what you don't know for a fact (I even have one host that had stuff hidden in my "fresh" account, buried in the logs, so apparently they were reusing something along the line as a template).

Should I, and how would I, wipe out the space properly?

Setting Up A CDN

May 15, 2008

I am wondering if you can either:

1. Point me to an article you can validate as being accurate; or

2. Explain to me as much as you are willing to the following question:

How would someone setup a CDN to compete with companies like level3/softlayer/peer1 etc..? What kind of software is used? Is there special routing issues to address? I do understand you need *at least* 15-20 nodes before you can offer a "true CDN" and I do understand that they need to be in different locations on the POP's. How do you stream files over the CDN as well? Via RTMP?

Setting Up DNS

Aug 1, 2007

to add a new domain name to my hosting account, when I put in the nameservers at namecheap, my new domain resolves to the wrong IP address.

When I contacted my host, they told me I need to contact namecheap and give them the IP address and my namservers names.

I have never had to do this before. Usually I just add a new domain in my WHM and everything works. Right now namecheap is using my hosting companies nameservers, when I try to switch to my name servers namecheap comes back with an error.

I added new zones in the WHM for my name servers, but nothing is working.

What do I need to do to get this working? I have one current domain name that is working and one that is not.

Setting Up VPS Box

Apr 3, 2008

I have already one dedicated server which I use for shared hosting and for my companys site.

I have read something little about managing VPS and can say that I want to use OpenVZ for that but that's all of my knowledge.

1. Howto setup VPS box (openVZ)?

2. Do I need leave free space/resource for "management" or can I use all space/resource for clients. I have my companys site and stuff in different server (as you can read above).

3. VPS box security? Do I need to worrie about that?

4. If I want to offer multiple OS options for clients, is it possible and how that is done?

5. Is there any "VPS control panel" for clients? For reboot, shutdown, re-install OS and such actions?

6. Do I need more IPs than VEs need (one per VE).

But i'm only wanting to use IIS for testing. Since i'm a newbie i'm unsure on some secuity aspects. Is it possible to use IIS for testing only, that is, no possibility of anyone else using it to access my computer?

Setting Up An Environment On My VPS

Nov 3, 2007

I initially wanted to set up a VPS because I want to build a web application. The first phase is to set up a development environment, testing environment and production server. For the development environment, I want to set up an SVN server for my code (one reason why I chose a vps instead of a shared server) as well as a bug tracking system. Each environment would be under subdomains, except the production server (development.domain.com, trac.domain.com, testing.domain.com).

My question is what is the best way to utilize my VPS for this type of environment? Should I create a client for each environment? Stick everything under my admin account? I'm sure this is a simple question, but I just want to make my system as organized as possible.

At the minimum, could someone point me in the direction of any resources?

My first post on here! I have just signed up with a VPS, and before I did so, i asked if IMAP was supported, and that was confirmed.

Now, when I try to get it to work, I am told by support that my current mails transport agent (mailEnable) does not support IMAP, and that I should elect not to use mailEnable and configure IMAP with the Microsoft Services.

Now, here I am lost. What do they mean, and how do i proceede Thank you for any input!
