Moving From Reseller To VPS

Mar 18, 2008

I've bought a VPS and have copied all of the clients data to the new server. I've setup my resolvers to point to the new nameserver IPs.

Now I need to edit the host.com host record IPs from my old ones to my new ones. (example domain) ns1.host.com and ns2.hosting.com

I've gone to fasthosts' control panel where I registered host.com and attempted to delete the old host records but this fails because other domains are pointing to the current records.

How can I update the host records for ns1 and ns2 with my new nameserver IPs?

Moving Host As A Reseller

Sep 17, 2008

I bought a reseller account because i had a dozen or so sites and could save money etc taking charge of them. I bought a reseller account. After a while with my hosting company I am unhappy with the uptime so I have set up another reseller account with hostgator.

I now need to move all my sites over.

I understand what I need to do is;

(these are simple, non database, non wordpress sites btw)

Make a backup of site
Put backup of site on new reseller account
repoint dns for site on old reseller account to new reseller account
job done!

I have backed up my site and now want to upload it to my new location. I have setup the domain account in my reseller control panel.

My problem is how/where do i upload these files to? I think I need a direct IP address as if i ftp to ftp.sitename.com that onviously sends me to the reseller account i am trying to leave.

I know my reseller ip address, but how does that relate to the sites i am going to host...?

Moving Away From HostICan Reseller To VPS

Aug 29, 2007

since February (this year) I was a happy reseller user of HostICan. When I moved with them they transfered all my accounts and had no problems for the months I stayed with them.

But all has to come to an end ... and I moved from their reseller because they closed it.

But, what better place to move from HostICan reseller than HostICan VPS?

About a week ago we agreed to be transfered to one of their VPS. Painless, free, fast (half our for 40 cpanel accounts) and had no problems at all. I just waited a week to make sure nothing bad happens so I can tell you about this.

Anything else? No downtime that I know about, fast services and fast support. I didn't had more than 3 support tickets in all these months

I must say these guys really took care of me all these months, especially Denis Motova.
Not a bad review like you would of thought ...

Very satisfied with them... one of the best hosts I've been with.

Moving Reseller Acount To New Host - Want To Keep Email

Jul 16, 2009

We currently use a hosting company in the UK to host about 13 of our clients websites. The domains have been registered with many different companies to complicate things even more!

We do not host their email. The clients look after their email themselves but obviously use the same domain as the website in their email addresses.

We would now like to move these websites to a new hosting company which I have already set up. I've uploaded all the files and databases so all that's in place and seems to be working well.

Now the complicated part (for me anyway)!

I'm not sure what I need to do in order to change where the site is hosted from and NOT change anything about the clients email settings. I believe I do not need to change the DNS settings as this may disrupt the email settings which I don't want. Do I need to change only the IP address to the new server?

My new hosting plan is on a Virtual dedicated server if that's important.

Trouble Moving A Site

Oct 19, 2009

We are in the process of changing web hosting companies and I am having difficulty in moving all the directories. We are a membership based company with over 8,900 members. The original web site (called Site a) has over 26,700 individual directories along with many tutorials in video format. The entire site is approximately 80 GB in size.

When I had the second web hosting company try to move the site via tar they indicated that the tar would abort at about 4 GB every time.

Is there any other way to move this site or get a complete backup of the site. I have no problem moving the MySQL databases.

Moving Site: Ssh Advice

Jun 4, 2007

to move one of my sites from 1-st dedicated server to 2-nd dedicated server.

Of course i have shell access on both servers. As site is huge one (60gb space and 99% of files in one folder) going to tar -czvf this folder and move it.

or may be mput all files.

the only problem that i have ... is, that i need SSH commands advice.

if i type [mput *] i must keep window opened. but as u understand 60gb is can be transferred during ~10-15 hours. that's why need to know, is there any command that i must type (with mput *) and close window. So, don't be online all this time and/or keep shell window opened during this tranfer.

Moving Large Site

Typically for small sites i am able to use server to server ftp to move files.

However, when moving large site like this, ftp might be disconnected and lost track of which files are not transferred.

How can i transfer/move the files (server to server) and resume if disconnected?

Moving Site From Linux To Windows

Jun 29, 2008

I have a customer who would like me to move his site from a linux box to windows. As we are all linux I'm not sure of any major implications this would have.

He wants to move as he is starting some .NET dev and wants to keep it all on the same server.

The linux box has a forum/blog type application (customer written). It was done in PHP and using MySQL.

The windows server is a Windows 2003 server.

As far as I know I'll have to install the entire windows OS, install all SP and updates. I will install IIS, .NET.

The MySQL installation is pretty simple and the PHP will be run as a CGI under IIS.

I am thinking of installing an anti virus/trjoan scanner but as there will be no mail server there I'm guessing it's not necessary.

I'm pretty sure I will need a firewall as there is no iptables equivalent for windoes (is there??). Any suggestions on something cheap / fast / stable and good.

If someobody can see anything I missed here PLEASE let me as it will be most appreciated.

is the 4GB + problem still around with a windows server 32bit ? The box will have exactly 4GB of memory.

Htaccess - Moving Site From Subdomain To New Domain

Oct 21, 2007

I have what I think is kind of a unique situation with a site move and Google is not turning up an answer that seems to work.

My site is currently in this format:

www.mydomain.com/site/file.html

And I am "moving" it but also switching from html to php, so the same file would be found at:

site.mydomain.com/file.php

I want to redirect users going to the old pages to their equivalent on the new site, however this is a little bit of a problem because this is a normal subdomain - it is the same directory as before but now there are php versions of the html files.

Right now I have all of the http files redirecting to their php equivilents, but I don't believe this is a desirable solution. Also it creates a problem when people go to www.mydomain.com/site (not indicating a specific file; just the subdir root) because I have www.mydomain.com/site/index.html redirecting to www.mydomain.com/site/index.php.

Quite a mess.

My first option is to put the redirects in the htaccess file on the "old" site. But is this a problem because there are over 500 pages on the site? Does it create a heavy server load because any requests force the server to serve a huge htaccess file?

The next alternative seems the most preferable although I'm not sure how to do it. It seems it could use wildcards so that anyone going to *.html gets directed to *.php or something like that. The only problem is that there are a small number of files that were removed completely and do not have php equivilants (about 5 or 6) and would need to redirect to the index.php in the root

Dedicated Or VPS Or Reseller Hosting For Business Site

Jul 30, 2008

I'm managing our business websites and we're presently using budget shared web hosting.

As the business grows, the uptime of our websites (and web server) is important to the bosses.

I'm wondering whether we should go with managed dedicated web hosting (expensive), VPS hosting (not too familiar with it) or go with a reseller hosting account?

Cpanel Moving Accounts

Jun 28, 2009

i have a dedicated server. Centos 5.3 /Cpanel
2 reseller accounts on it: acc1 and acc2.
acc1 has ns1.domain.tld and ns2.domain.tl nameservers set up
acc2 has ns3.domain.tld and ns4.domain.tl nameservers set up

now i want to move an account (customer.tld) from acc2 to acc1 without downtime.
how can i do this provided i can not have customer.tld both on acc1 and acc2 on the same server?

here's what i did:

1. changed customer.tld nameservers to have ns1.domain.tld, ns2.domain.tld, ns3.domain.tld, ns4.domain.tld then waited for 48 hours for the changes to propagate

2. changed the customer.tld owner in WHM from acc2 to acc1

3. changed the cpanel package from acc2_package ti acc1_package

4. changed the IP in WHM for the account from ns3 IP to ns1 IP

5. changed the DNS entries in WHM ns3 changed to ns1 on all instances found there

but i still have a downtime period now. everything looks fine in httpd.conf thou

Moving From CPanel, And Maybe Softlayer

Oct 29, 2009

I've finally decided to move from relying on cPanel so much to managing php/mysql/apache on my own, but I have a problem... I host a few people on my server ... Not a lot, but enough to justify some type of cPanel-ish system for their domains. Is there anything free that allows them to manage their emails, FTP accounts, database, etc. while allowing me to manage the server's software? Something that lets me manage the vhosts easily would be great too, but not required.

Since I'm moving off of cPanel, and from CentOS->Debian as a result, I'm going to just buy a new server - however I'm not sure if I want to stick with SoftLayer. They're an amazing company, have great support, great hardware, I've never experienced ANY downtime with them... But I'm paying a bit of a premium - are there any alternatives with the same quality level but a bit cheaper? Even $5-10 cheaper would be fine. I'm looking to switch to a server that's a dualcore, 2gb ram, and at least 1.5tB of bandwidth - I'd rather not pay more than $155/month for that but I'm willing to go up to $200/month (Assuming the hardware and bandwidth scale).
It'd be GREAT if I could get the hardware I listed with a 10mbit unmetered for under $240/month... But, how realistic is that? Softlayer's 10mbit unmetered is $100/month.

I'd also love to be able to build my own server and colo it somewhere, but... So far all the prices I've found don't pay off until you're paying $6-700/month, so that's not looking too good - especially if I have to spend another $4-500 on the server itself.

Moving Main Account CPanel/WHM

Feb 21, 2007

I have several sites under a cPanel/WHM reseller account. I want to move the biggest site under this account to another host. This site is the main site for the reseller account. The user name associated with it is my account name with the host, and all the other sites on that account are shown in WHM to be owned by it.

After I have the site running on the new host, I want to delete it from the old one. How can I do this whilst still retaining access to WHM which is only accessible through the cPanel of this site?
