Load Averages In Linux Are Confusing

Jan 26, 2008

the Load averages in Linux I tend to find confusing, I've read that its the system load averaged over 1, 5 and 15 minutes but beyond that I never seem to find a clear cut answer as to what is considered a normal system load.

For instance I have a p4 D 3Ghz with 2gb ram and a single 250gb SATA HDD

the 15min average sits around 0.85 during the busiest time Is that good bad or indifferent?

The server hosts my sites and that of a few friends.
[url]shows what MRTG is outputting about the load averages.

It also says the CPU is 520% although I believe it multiplies it by 10? (i changed the title to say that) so its around 52%

I understand how the load averages are calculated and what the numbers represent but what would be considered a high load average and at what point would the server need upgraded?

Load Averages

Jun 15, 2009

That would be impossible as the LOAD as given in linux/unix has nothing to do with the cpu load of a server but the total of processes queued (waiting for their turn). If their main node has such a high queue count it should be fairly easy to see for them which process is causing that. No idea why some hosts keep sending their customers to fairytale land every time when it comes to linux load information. Anyways; Exim with that many processes doesnt sound to good either.

As for one VPS bringing down the main node; this is really not that strange as you keep in concideration that a VPS is still a node with many shared customers. Where some things can be regulated, like cpu cycles and memory, but if your node goes completely balistic on its disk IO it will bring a VPS-main node to its knees.

Server Load Averages

Mar 26, 2009

I've never fully understood load averages, I've read articles about what it means but I still don't fully grasp what they are and their meaning.

For example, if I'm to understand correctly, if the amount of processors is greater than the load, then the server is not behind on processing. For example, if a server has a load average of 3.4 and is quad core, this would mean it's not 'under strain', correct?

I have a dedicated server, 2 3GHZ CPUs and the following load averages:

Quote:

Load Averages3.25 3.61 3.69

Does this equate to my server being strained, or handling fine?

Confusing BlueHost Chat: Server Load = Percentage?

Jun 1, 2009

So... I just had an interesting chat over at BlueHost.

One of my clients' sites has been really sluggish lately, and I'm trying to patch and streamline what I can until we can get them migrated over to something more stable.

Anyway, I was looking over things in cPanel and saw that the Server Load was way in the red zone (over 24 on an 8 CPU box)! So I jumped into their live chat, thinking that was the best way to help bring it to their attention quickly.

Here's what I got instead:

Travis [10:13:19 AM]: box439's Server Load is skyrocketing -- in just the past three minutes it has gone from 21.24 (8 cpus) up to 34.12! Even now, it's "stabilizing" at 25 (which is WAY too much for an 8 cpu server).

Brent [10:13:46 AM]: actually, it's not. It's a percentage.
[10:13:52 AM]: 25% of the load
Travis [10:14:03 AM]: No, it's not. 25 = 25cpu equivalent.
Brent [10:14:32 AM]: no, really, it is.
Travis [10:15:24 AM]: Brent, anything over 8.5 generates the "red exclamation mark" icon on the server status page
Brent [10:16:13 AM]: yes it doesn, but it doesn't mean there is an overload
Travis [10:17:06 AM]: ((BlueHost's Server Status page)) says, "2009-06-01 09:10:45: Box under heavy load -- you may experience degraded system performance"
Brent [10:17:39 AM]: i didn't say it wasn't under a heavy load. I was trying ot explain more of what that server cpu item means
Travis [10:18:25 AM]: from ((url)): "At this time of writing, red light is shown for the server loads where the numbers are 18.12 (8cpus). This means there are 18.12 processes in queue - which is over 2 times of CPU capacity."
Brent [10:18:49 AM]: that information is not correct, as we have modified the way our servers display the cpu.

[10:23:32 AM]: I apologize, but it seems you've stepped away. Due to other customers awaiting assistance I am going to have to end this chat. If you have additional questions, we are here for you at all times. Thank you for trying our Live Chat! If you have additional questions, many answers can be found through our Knowledgebase. If you have other issues arise please let us know over live chat or give our Ticket Center a try. Remember our World Class Support is just a click away!

So I'm wondering whether he was completely BS-ing me, or if BlueHost really did modify that output. (And if it's the latter, then why would 25% CPU usage bring the server to a slow crawl?)

Apache/High Load Averages

Sep 10, 2008

been checking out this site for a while and finally decided to register because I have a problem. Also hope this is the correct forum for this topic, sorry if it isn't.

So I have a problem with Apache. One of the sites that I run/host has a moderately large vBulletin board, and Apache just seems to eat up the CPU. Load averages have shot up between 20-30 and I've seen it as high as 80. Apache and MySQL are optimized already, I'm using suPHP for security because there are other sites on this box.

The funny thing about this is that it only started happening about a week ago. After checking for rootkits and all that garbage, I reinstalled the OS just to be on the safe side. Everything comes back clean still. I also got fed up and hired Platinum Server Management for a month, to see if they could find a solution (and I've been interested in reselling their services, but that's not relevant). So far the only thing they can come up with is disable suPHP, which isn't an option. I do realize that suPHP is ~20-25 times slower than mod_php, but what totally baffles me is that it worked beforehand and started going all crazy like this. I did try running the site using an dso configuration, the load did drop, but nothing to be proud of.

This site, and the server overall hasn't had any increase in load, I've held off putting new accounts on it until I get this fixed.

In the meantime, I have said forums running on lighttpd, which lowered the load. (Also writing a tutorial on having lighty work with cPanel)

way to get MySQL stats such as queries per day and things like that?

Php.ini On Ubuntu Is Confusing Me

Mar 11, 2009

I am all too familiar with php on my win box but now am working on Linux.

the extension_dir is commented out (??) however CURL does work but there is nothing about CURL in php.ini. I cant find any php.so files.

Also the php.ini file lives in /etc/php5/apache2

Does this look like a standard install? Where do the .so files live?

Ultimatly I want to install Turck MMCache which requires some extensions and when ever I try to do phpize there is the error message
Cannot find config.m4 (google is not helping solve the problem)

apt-get install m4 says I have the latest version.

phpize is a shortcut in usr/bin that points to etc/alternatives/phpize which in turn is a shortcut to usr/bin/phpize5

Dedicatednow - Extremely Confusing Billing Areas

Jun 3, 2008

Any Dedicatednow.com customers here? Where do you pay your bills?

I got an invoice but there are about 3 different areas for logging in it seems and I can only log into one of them. But that area does not have an invoice...

Here are the 3 different possible areas.

Which the heck is the correct area for all your billing, so I can contact them for my login? I have been paying last 2-3 months but I cannot remember how on earth I paid. I also don't know how to contact them except their technical support which is support@.

I looked at their initial welcome emails which also don't provide much information, a billing info directs me to the pwebtech website which is just ubersmith - and it looks out of date, I have 2 servers with them but only 1 appear and the latest invoice that was email does not appear nor its server.

Trace High(ish) Linux Load

Apr 27, 2007

This is a RHEL3 box. It has a couple hundred sites, most of which are pretty quiet most of the time, lately I can't get the load below 3 most of the time. I've tried all the usual TOP PS and the rest, but I'm not seeing my problem. I've attached a text file with extended outputs. but here's what I'm seeing now from TOP and VMSTAT. I'm not sure what else I could be looking at.

I've been watching, and it seems to be Apache most of the time at the top of TOP, and I'm logging slow-queries for myslq, but there aren't many there.

top
10:02:03 up 3 days, 21:23, 2 users, load average: 2.81, 2.83, 3.05

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: High CPU Wait I/O And Load Average During Backup

May 20, 2014

PRODUCT, VERSION, OPERATING SYSTEM, ARCHITECTURE
Parallels Plesk Panel 11.5.30 MU #44 CentOS 6.5 (Final) 64bit

2 of our our servers are suddenly experiencing high Wait I/O Times, and high Load Averages during the backup process. During this period the Plesk grinds to a halt, sometimes crashing out completely (although SSh is still possible. We have been in talks with our server suppliers (assuming this would be node related) however they have done a lot of testing etc. and categorically state the node is fine , with no other users affecting it.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE : We backup the server using the scheduled backup service and Wait I/O immediately goes up.

ACTUAL RESULT: Plesk downtime / Website downtime

EXPECTED RESULT: No downtime, successful back up

Some other info :
All other processes (MYSQL, apache, Nginx etc) are all running between 1 - 10%

Partition "/usr" utilization 4.2% used (1.81 GB of 43.3 GB) (?)
Partition "/var" utilization 50.6% used (61.8 GB of 122 GB) (?)

We are struggling to identify what has changed on the server that would cause this sudden change.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: File Sharing Stops - Unable To Load Folders List

Apr 6, 2015

After enabling File Sharing in Plesk 12, the service appears to function correctly. If only a few files are uploaded, they are ok. However, after uploading a directory structure with a handful of MB, and subdirectories, File Sharing stops. It shows at the top of the screen:

"Internal error: The File Sharing service is temporarily unavailable because the site is down for maintenance."

it also says in the main window:

"Unable to load folders list."

Clicking on Upload Files, that dialog also shows "Unable to load folders list."

I have checked that the ownership of those files on the server is www-data:www-data , and that permissions are 755 for directories and 644 for files, because it seems like ownership and permissions could be an issue, however that doesn't fix it. Removing all the files in the share does fix it, however that's not useful if the files should be available for sharing.
