Limestone - Extremely Slow Response
Dec 20, 2008
Limestone's support is extremely slow. I just got a server with them to host VPSes, so I was inquiring about additional IPs in case I needed them.
Their first two responses were within 4-5 hours, which is bearable. However, yesterday, I actually needed to order more IPs and posted a new reply. I have yet to receive a reply after over 12 hours and my client has been left waiting to receive the additional IPs he ordered.
I haven't been with Limestone long, and I haven't had much other experience with their support, but I was unsure what else to do other than post this here and hopefully get a resolution.
I know their servers are unmanaged and pretty cheap, but I think they should still take the time to answer tickets in a decent amount of time.
Has anyone had similar experiences with Limestone?

I installed CentOS 5.0 and I configured it with software RAID 1, two disks - one IDE 160 GB and one SATA 40 GB.
Here is the setup of the disks:
RAID:
~40 GB RAID 1 md0 ext3
~500 MB RAID 1 md1 swap
Disk1:
~40 gb software raid md0
~500 mb software raid md1
Disk 2:
~40 gb software raid md0
~500 mb software raid md1
After the installation I noticed that the server was very slow so I did a performace test on disk 2, here is the result:
hdparm -tT /dev/hdd first gave me:
Timing buffered disk reads: 6 MB in 3.52 seconds = 1.70 MB/sec
Timing cached reads: 488 MB in 6.92 seconds = 70.57 MB/sec
then gave me:
Timing cached reads: 392 MB in 2.01 seconds = 195.01 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 2 MB in 3.62 seconds = 566.16 kB/sec
So I assumed something was wrong with the disk and replaced it with an 80 GB IDE disk (same setup as before) and got the following results:
hdparm -tT /dev/hdd:
Timing cached reads: 4 MB in 4.69 seconds = 872.73 kB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 6 MB in 3.72 seconds = 1.61 MB/sec
It feels highly unlikely that there is something wrong with both of the IDE disks. So what can be the problem? Can you think of anything?

I'm running into a problem with a relatively new (2 months old) server. I have just a few accounts on it, and I'm already noticing unusual loads, for the... load. After some benchmarking with bonnie++ (and plain old "dd") there is clearly a problem.
Version 1.03b ------Sequential Output------ --Sequential Input- --Random-
-Per Chr- --Block-- -Rewrite- -Per Chr- --Block-- --Seeks--
Machine Size K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP /sec %CP
SERVER NAME 2G 9096 16 7725 2 2543 0 20609 32 621627 55 +++++ +++
Isn't a write-speed over 7MB/s reasonable to expect? Also look at the low CPU times...
Anyway running the same test on a similar but older AND busier server showed much better results than this. In fact dd'ing a 1GB file from /dev/zero "finished" in about 10 seconds but then pegged the server at 99% iowait (wa) for a full three minutes (until done being written from cache I assume), bringing load to 15.00
That's all the info I have so far... the data center just replaced the card (which gave no errors) with no effect. Running these benchmark tests is about the extend of my hardware experience.

In the last few days the responses from Plesk's XML API have been extremely slow. It's now taking an average of 45 seconds to handle an XML API request where it used to be more around 5 seconds. What would cause that? What service handles these requests on the server so I can try rebooting it?

just noticed my server is EXTREMELY slow... as well as the limestone network control panel. I had a friend of mine test it too, slow for him. My load is nice and low.. Maybe they are getting DDOS'd? I moved from Burst to limestone and paying alot more, I expected more.
if anyone else is having a SUPER slow connection to the limestone network? I'm about to call their support

I have Qmail installed on my Centos box. There seems to be some problem with connection because when I run DNSreport from dnsstuff.com on it it shows me that it cannot connect to mailserver.
I tried telnet from local and this is what happened...
telnet mail.mydomain.com 25
Trying XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX...
Connected to mail.mydomain.com (XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX).
Escape character is '^]'.
then nothing happens for a while (about 30s)
and then I receive this greetings message:
220 [mydomain.com] ESMTP NO UCE/SPAM on this server ESMTP
How can I speed up this process? Are there any lookups possible or what?

I have a dedicated server that I am renting that appears to randomly respond very slowly for some reason (pings are between 90-4000ms with about 75% packet loss).
This has been happening lately (about once a week for the past 4 weeks) and I thought I had originally found the cause of the problem but it appears I haven't.
Originally, when this problem was happening we were getting an abnormally high about of traffic but a reboot always fixed the issue. I've checked every where I can think of but I cannot find anything out of the ordinary.
ight now we're averaging less than 2Mbps in traffic, the CPU load is less than 0.75, the memory usage is at 55% with no swap being used, Apache connections are normal, no active SSH, FTP, or mail connections, I've restarted all services which had no impact, I've checked the access and error logs but can't see anything out of the ordinary.
I have a ticket open with the data center but I'm trying to figure this out on my own to fix whatever is causing this so I can move my data over to a new server we just got setup over the weekend in a local data center.

I recently made a shift to FDC for one of my servers that I use for downloadable content.
I went for a $199 server with a 100mbps shared bandwidth port. Now, the only problem I seem to be having with it is that downloads appear to be, I would say recognized, very slowly by the server before they start, however, once the download starts I get a full speed. This usually happens during peak times.
I'm using about 10/15mbps on the server according to my cPanel statistics. I just wanted to ask here prior to contacting FDC on this, whether this slow server response time has something to do with the bandwidth port, or perhaps the server's RAM, CPU, etc? Given I'm using quite minimal bandwidth on the port, should I consider having them fix this or upgrade the server instead?
And if I had to upgrade, would I need to upgrade the port or the RAM, or both for this?

This is in regard to ongoing stress I've had over this server from DN...
Keep in mind this is a NEW server order; my first with this company.
I was assigned IPs that appear to be on multiple spam block lists. The "biggest" problems are mail being dumped to bulk by yahoo and dumped to bulk or completely black holed by hotmail. It was also blocked by comcast, mail.ru, and anyone who uses SORBS (those are the only ones I KNOW about so far). This helps reinforce the suspicion that bulk mail was being delivered from the IPs at some point.
I Contacted support at 9PM on the 13th and was referred to abuse. Only after complaining again on the 17th, was I told they requested removal from ONE of the blacklists and they would "look into" the others. I replied saying I wanted new IPs or I would request a refund and that I did not feel the service I recently purchased was actually delivered.
Now here is the part that is giving me the feeling this will not end well for me; I no longer see the abuse department ticket when I log into their ticket system.
What If I ordered the server to use as a mail server? Am I out of line for finding a new server unable to deliver mail to the hotmail/yahoo inbox unacceptable?
Telling my customers to wait and maybe someday their mail will be delivered to the major free mail services is not the kind of reputation I want to have. Its feels like I was sold a problem someone else created and am expected to wait an unspecified amount of time to see if it can be resolved. I do not feel its fair to be left hanging while waiting for white listing attempts on IPs I did not soil in the first place.
I really hate bulk mailers and spammers. : /

I've been having trouble with my VPS for a while now. In the QoS alerts page in Virtuozzo it seems to be a problem with numtcpsock and tcprcvbuf, mainly numtcpsock.
Copy these into the browser:
i18.photobucket.com/albums/b106/gnatfish/qosnumtcpsock2.jpg
And when i run cat /proc/user_beancounters:
i18.photobucket.com/albums/b106/gnatfish/beancounters2.jpg
This line is particularly scary:
numtcpsock 164 164 166 166 7321
What do i need to do, to get the website running again? It's only one site on the vps a proxy. So i thought a vps would be able to handle one proxy.

I have built a database driven site with PHP & MySQL. Pages download quicker on some connections than other (obviously), however this is not due to connection speed. The web host server seems to respond very slowly to my boss's network (which is on a proxy server). Could it be that this problem is related to the web host? i.e. could it be that the web host is unequipped to deal quickly with this type of network?
On my home connection (2Mbps), pages often download instantly, however occaisionally I have to wait 10-20 seconds to receive the page from the host.
Finally, could you recommend an excellent web host to use with our site? My boss wants to offer a professional service where server response is quick. We are based in the UK.

We are seeing intermittent slow responses from SMTP on a RHEL6 server running Qmail on Plesk 11.5. The response is being measured from a remote Zabbix server.
The response time seems to be slow (>10s) for a period of 2-3 minutes and then returns to normal (<1s). All other services continue to be ok during the period of slowness.
The server_args line in /etc/xinetd.d/smtp_psa already contains "-Rt0" and all the DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf are resolving properly.
From looking at the maillog file the server was receiving about 35 SMTP connections a minute at the time of the slowdown. We have the server configured to use 2 x RBL's.
I wonder if we are hitting a limit on the maximum amount of SMTP connections. The file /var/qmail/control/concurrencyincoming does not exist so, according to the Qmail manual, there shouldn't be a limit on the number of incoming SMTP connections.

Just a warning to everyone.
I ordered 5 servers from alphared.com, I spent an entire evening explaining to their sales person what I required.
In the end I decided on 4 Duo's and one P4. All to be connected with a Gigabit private Lan and to share 10Mbit premium bandwidth. I was promised it would take approx three days for this to be setup.
One week later I was met with an apology that the price quoted would unfortunately have to be tripled due to a mistake.
I paid $3,500 setup. Its now three weeks later and I have NO service.
I follow up every few days and am promised the service will be up soon.
STILL NO SERVICE!
Today I'm met with ANOTHER email saying it will be 10 days to allocate me 32 IP's. Not to mention the mess that every few days I'm asking how I want the servers setup.
I have missed my deadlines, my current provider is still billing me, my clients are moaning that I"m doing nothing about our current providers issues.
Are there any decent providers out there? or is finding someone who is competent and does what they say a pipedream?
And I guess I've lost $3,500 ... haven't I?

They don't appear for some time if I kill them (a day or more). But it repeats again and again. One day there were 8 similar processes in total in max which used all 4 cores at 100% (and even ssh console was extremely slow to do something there).
I think that somebody is trying to make a small attack of some sort but I need to check it first. I tried to look at apache logs but there were too many posting requests from different IPs and no dublicates for little period of time so I had no success.
Anyway, that script worked for us for 4 years already and we didn't have any problems with it even on our old single core P4 2.8 ghz.
way to make sure is this an attack of some sort or just this script doesn't work correctly on our new machine?
Are there any ways to get IPs of visitors who are running posting.php with CPU overloading?

today i got a message from a client asking about hosting his video himself, catch is, he has a shitload of viewers, im looking at servers in the range of quad core (maybe dual quad), 8gig, 4 hdd raid10, gige uplink, however the kicker, depending on how out of whack my estimates are, 100 to 400mbit SUSTAINED upstream (spiking all the way to max'n that 'little' gige pipe)
Has anyone got suggestions on who i should even consider for this? I'm a bit dumbfounded myself as i'v never even thought about a server on this much sustained bandwidth before today.

--An extremely positive review of 3DGWebHosting
We now have passed 60 days with 3dgwebhosting (3dgwebhosting.com) and what had started as a VPS only endeavor continues to expand based upon the incredible level of support and technical performance we are receiving.
If you would have asked me three months ago about 3dgwebhosting I would have been unable to respond...I did quite a bit of research when we decided to switch from a shared hosting offering with some large shared hosting providers to a VPS. I contacted close to a dozen providers and inquired regarding performance, packages, support, etc. and at the end of the day there was a level of comfort with 3DG that I did not have with the majority of other VPS Providers. Don't get me wrong...there were some shining stars in the bunch but something about 3dg (beyond the great pricing and flexibility) sold me on giving them a try.
Being a serial entrepreneur I have always been partial to working with smaller (at least those that felt smaller!) customer-centric firms for all of my support services from back office to technical. This was no exception. Performance is obviously critical in the technical space but I also view customer service and attentive vendors as critical factors in vendor selection.
Well the short of it is we have been on board with 3DG for over 60 days. Performance has been top notch and the level of customer support has been unmatched by any technical services provider I have used in the past. In addition, 3DG has become a strategic partner and has provided some great insight into how to globalize our technology and incorporate our clients’ needs into our technology platform (i.e. SharePoint). I truly did not expect to see this level of involvement on a consulting front and level of customization on a technology front from a hosting provider – a pleasant surprise! Kudos to David and the 3dg team. We have many sites on the VPS but our primary is glotegy.com.
If my business provides a level of service that is worthy of praise I always hope that my clients will speak their mind and help me spread the word about what I am trying to do. With that said I cannot recommend 3DG highly enough!
Since the inception of the VPS we have also put in place a dedicated server at 3DG that is running Office SharePoint Server and will be live with a hosted solution of Microsoft Dynamics 4.0 CRM with 3DG sometime next week.
Sorry for the long post but as you can probably tell I get pretty passionate about my business and those firms who help me with my global endeavors! To sum it up...finally...3DG is attentive, customer-centric, and a valued business partner.

We've found out a abnormal usage of one of our servers, our RTG graphs shows:
Last 24h
IfInOctets: 30.5GB
MAX: 6.9MBits/s
AVG: 3.4Mbits/s
Cur: 4.7Mbits/s
And a strage traffic:
IfOutOctets: 42.5GB
MAX: 76.6MBits/s
AVG: 4.7Mbits/s
Cur: 600Kbits/s
We are running two websites on this server, and we looked at raw log apache, we've compilers disabled, we block most of outgoing / incoming packets on firewall, we ran chkrootkit, rkhunter and nothing was found. We checked for cronjobs, suspect files, netstat, but we can't see anything strange. We use the latest server software (apache 2.2.x), PHP 5.2.x, MySQL 4.1.x, we have most of the server optimized.
We are running iptraf now, and it seems normal:
„ Incoming rates: 85.8 kbytes/sec
„ Outgoing rates: 636.4 kbytes/sec
Anyone have an idea? And some way to properly monitor incoming traffic? I'm looking to find how/where is the source of this traffic.

I've got 25 domains on a Virtuozzo/Plesk8.6/CentOS5 VPS. Each domain has one up-to-date install of WordPress, most have very little traffic (average 200mb per month), maybe 2 domains get 5-7gb traffic per month.
I monitor port 80 connections and rarely see more than 10 at a time.
That should in my opinion be no problem at all for a VPS with 768mb guaranteed ram and 2.4ghz cpu. I've got 30gb hard drive spare too.
But.... about 8 or 10 times a day it grinds to a complete halt: server load at 500-1000%, sites timing out, plesk takes 3mins to load, often I can't even connect with SSH, and the plesk web server, apache
INSERT INTO module_watchdog_sys_stat (time, type, value, service_id) VALUES(FROM_UNIXTIME(1226404705), 'MAINMEM_USAGE', 17472, 11);
80 seconds sounds like a huge amount of time for a MySQL insert to me! Does anyone know if this is likely to be the cause of my trouble? Some problem with Plesk and the database? Or could it be something else?

Any Dedicatednow.com customers here? Where do you pay your bills?
I got an invoice but there are about 3 different areas for logging in it seems and I can only log into one of them. But that area does not have an invoice...
Here are the 3 different possible areas.

Which the heck is the correct area for all your billing, so I can contact them for my login? I have been paying last 2-3 months but I cannot remember how on earth I paid. I also don't know how to contact them except their technical support which is support@.
I looked at their initial welcome emails which also don't provide much information, a billing info directs me to the pwebtech website which is just ubersmith - and it looks out of date, I have 2 servers with them but only 1 appear and the latest invoice that was email does not appear nor its server.

hosting solution for 3 very high traffic blogs, all running on WordPress.
I have been researching dedicated and I came across a couple posts where people recommended Clustered hosting over Dedicated for better handling high traffic DB driven sites in the times of Digg or Slashdot frontpage exposure.
I would like your feedback, and your opinion on what to choose from the following options:
1. Netfirms Enterprise III (Clustered)
2. ResellerZoom Failover (Clustered)
3. LiquidWeb Dedicated Webmaster Series (Dedi w/ 2GB DDR and a 3Ghz Intel Hyperthreaded)
4. HiVelocity Dedicated (Dedi w/ Quad-Core Xeon 2.4GHz and 2GB DDR)

so limestone seriously has some dedicated servers in the same spec and price range as I have now. So I really want to switch to them, but I did a whois on them and I notice they haven't been established for too long though.
The guy with the username Crissic Solutions has spoken extremely highly of them, so I think my decision to go with them will be a great one.
But I'd like like some feedback on what people think about this company, just to kinda reassure myself I'm making a good decision.
