Decent Ping But Extremely Slow Download Speed
Jul 28, 2008I have just gotten a new server and the ping results were pretty fine. However, when it comes to the download speed its horrible. What could be the issue?

Limestone - Extremely Slow Response
Dec 20, 2008Limestone's support is extremely slow. I just got a server with them to host VPSes, so I was inquiring about additional IPs in case I needed them.
Their first two responses were within 4-5 hours, which is bearable. However, yesterday, I actually needed to order more IPs and posted a new reply. I have yet to receive a reply after over 12 hours and my client has been left waiting to receive the additional IPs he ordered.
I haven't been with Limestone long, and I haven't had much other experience with their support, but I was unsure what else to do other than post this here and hopefully get a resolution.
I know their servers are unmanaged and pretty cheap, but I think they should still take the time to answer tickets in a decent amount of time.
Has anyone had similar experiences with Limestone?
Extremely Slow Software RAID
Sep 18, 2007I installed CentOS 5.0 and I configured it with software RAID 1, two disks - one IDE 160 GB and one SATA 40 GB.
Here is the setup of the disks:
RAID:
~40 GB RAID 1 md0 ext3
~500 MB RAID 1 md1 swap
Disk1:
~40 gb software raid md0
~500 mb software raid md1
Disk 2:
~40 gb software raid md0
~500 mb software raid md1
After the installation I noticed that the server was very slow so I did a performace test on disk 2, here is the result:
hdparm -tT /dev/hdd first gave me:
Timing buffered disk reads: 6 MB in 3.52 seconds = 1.70 MB/sec
Timing cached reads: 488 MB in 6.92 seconds = 70.57 MB/sec
then gave me:
Timing cached reads: 392 MB in 2.01 seconds = 195.01 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 2 MB in 3.62 seconds = 566.16 kB/sec
So I assumed something was wrong with the disk and replaced it with an 80 GB IDE disk (same setup as before) and got the following results:
hdparm -tT /dev/hdd:
Timing cached reads: 4 MB in 4.69 seconds = 872.73 kB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 6 MB in 3.72 seconds = 1.61 MB/sec
It feels highly unlikely that there is something wrong with both of the IDE disks. So what can be the problem? Can you think of anything?
Disk Writes Extremely Slow On SATA RAID
Jan 10, 2008I'm running into a problem with a relatively new (2 months old) server. I have just a few accounts on it, and I'm already noticing unusual loads, for the... load. After some benchmarking with bonnie++ (and plain old "dd") there is clearly a problem.

Isn't a write-speed over 7MB/s reasonable to expect? Also look at the low CPU times...
Anyway running the same test on a similar but older AND busier server showed much better results than this. In fact dd'ing a 1GB file from /dev/zero "finished" in about 10 seconds but then pegged the server at 99% iowait (wa) for a full three minutes (until done being written from cache I assume), bringing load to 15.00
That's all the info I have so far... the data center just replaced the card (which gave no errors) with no effect. Running these benchmark tests is about the extend of my hardware experience.
Plesk 12.x / Linux :: API Requests Suddenly Extremely Slow

It's now taking an average of 45 seconds to handle an XML API request where it used to be more around 5 seconds. What would cause that? What service handles these requests on the server so I can try rebooting it?

Dec 20, 2007I've been having trouble with my VPS for a while now. In the QoS alerts page in Virtuozzo it seems to be a problem with numtcpsock and tcprcvbuf, mainly numtcpsock.

Checking For Streaming Capabilities [traceout, Ping, Speed Test]
May 8, 2009We have a dedicated streaming server with Leaseweb in Netherlands that we use primarily to stream video content to North American clients. This server only utilize 75 to 80% of it's allowed bandwidth capacity. However, some clients have buffering issues with the live content.
When we talk to Leaseweb they have asked us to provide traceroute between server and client. Can some one please explain to me what below traceroute means in terms of streaming?

What download speed do you get
I have 100MB/Sec port and normally always get around 500-600kbps download speed with DedicatedNOW but today I am only getting around 170kbps
I have a 10mb connection and when downloading file from here [url]I get 1.2MB/sec download speed
I asked support to confirm if I had 100MB/sec port and got a reply with:
"Your server is on a 100mbps port:
-bash-3.2# ethtool eth0 |grep Speed:
Speed: 100Mb/s
-bash-3.2#"
Sounds like a local issue. I am able to download at:

Sep 30, 2009I've two shared hosting accounts, one is hostgator and other is godaddy.
I've uploaded a file (.flv) on hostgator and same file on godaddy.

Now i am use a Download manager " free download manager" to download files
The hostgator file downloads at 17-35kb/s
The godaddy file downloads at 200kb/s
I am using 2Mbps dsl.
Also my hostgator cpanel loads slow. and other files are downloads at very low max 40kb/s.
What are the issues. I've contacted hostgator support and they say that every thing is ok on their end.
I have to stream videos on hostgator but the speed is too slow. and it buffers alot.

Aug 27, 2010Apache seems to have a maximum client download speed of 5Mb/s. That too after I use these commands:

Which without, the speeds are even slower!
I know for sure the server I am running Apache on can go to much higher speeds (2MB/s to even 12MB/s) because I tested it via FTP.
Leaseweb Network Speed Slow
Nov 3, 2009My new server is on a 100 Mbps port.
Doing a wget [url]
gives me only 6.63 MBps.

gives me 1.17 MBps.
The folks at leaseweb say it could be due to a network maintenance that they are performing and should be sorted tomorrow. No problem with that.
However, I just wanted to know if anyone else with a leaseweb server is experiencing the same problem now.
What is the speed you are getting?
On the positive side, leaseweb support replies have been fast and to the point. I like it so far.
Server Network Speed Gets Very Slow Then Unconnectable
Mar 5, 2008I have a server with a overheating problem and a network problem.
(With a lot of users connecting to it every second)
Well, recently the server started to get slow then finally it was up on KVM but network connections do not work.
After reboot, it works for around 10+ hours but it won't last for a day as it gets slower then unconnectable.
When I look at the logs, I see this:

NFS Slow Speed When Moving Many Small Files

It appeared to be an issue of cron run by their another client and after promising that they would move that client to another node (I have spent more than 25 days to follow up on this till now) they backed off from their words but informed me about an alternative. Now, they say that the cron of that client was executing many scripts and they have spaced those scripts.
I am looking for a long-term host and was wondering:
1. VPS provides a minimum guaranteed stuff so what is the use of that guarantee if one client can make the server crawl (imagine 5 minutes or more to open a site).
2. Can a host be trusted who does not honour words.
