Horrible Connections But Great Pings

Nov 27, 2007

Pings with 800 byte packets are going through fast and with 0% loss, but http requests, remote desktop, and basically anything more complex than a ping is incredibly unstable and laggy. It can't be a server problem as it's happening on all the servers on a particular network. It's not DNS issues because direct IP connections still have the same issues. What could cause this?

VPS Not Responding To PINGs

May 14, 2009

i'm unable to the response times of my server. The server resolves the correct ip to the ping domain but gets a request timed out.

I'm using a firewall but i don't know whether is that the case. If so what should i do to correct this issue.

How Much More Would You Pay For Low Pings For A Web Server

Jun 30, 2008

For a dedicated web server meant to serve a forum such as this one for example but aimed at a specific geographic location, how much extra per month would you pay for say 50 ms. vs. 85 ms. ping times to that location?

Webkore.net Pings

Aug 6, 2007

Thought prices could be a little bit better, but then again I'm used to seeing bargain hosts advertised on WHT.

Still, I needed a fast VPS and they were located locally so I decided to give them a try. First thing I did was to check the latency.

..then I re-checked it.

PHP Code:

root@vps [/home]# traceroute  74.86.101.142
traceroute to 74.86.101.142 (74.86.101.142), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
 1  host-72.232.246.186.static.reverse.anchorvps.com (72.232.246.186)  0.059 ms  0.034 ms  0.029 ms
 2  lt-pod3b.databank.com (63.164.96.245)  0.495 ms  0.409 ms  0.490 ms
 3  63.164.96.databank.com (63.164.96.61)  0.701 ms  0.392 ms  0.491 ms
 4  sl-st21-dal-8-0-0.sprintlink.net (144.228.250.93)  0.771 ms  1.041 ms  0.699 ms
 5  sl-st20-dal-3-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.9.94)  0.873 ms peer-01-so-1-0-0-0.dlfw.twtelecom.net (66.192.246.53)  1.014 ms  0.981 ms
 6  ge-2-0-0.r01.dllstx09.us.bb.verio.net (206.223.118.12)  1.197 ms  1.229 ms  1.282 ms
 7  po-2.r03.dllstx09.us.bb.gin.ntt.net (129.250.4.38)  1.190 ms  1.143 ms  1.049 ms
 8  softlayer-6.border3.ext1.dal.pnap.net (216.52.189.30)  1.297 ms  0.964 ms  1.041 ms
 9  po54.fcr02.dal01.dallas-datacenter.com (66.228.118.174)  1.125 ms  0.866 ms  1.619 ms
10  wirednoc.net (75.126.143.125)  1.438 ms  1.207 ms  1.841 ms
11  74.86.101.142-static.reverse.softlayer.com (74.86.101.142)  0.952 ms  1.130 ms  1.228 ms

I know that this isn't a miracle provider, and pings from other locations vary from 35ms+ but the 0.9ms traceroute result made me smile.

If anyone else wants to, feel free to post a traceroute so I can at least know who will be getting the latest latency on this baby.

Fastnext Aka Hostony Are Horrible

Aug 28, 2008

I have signed up for wht on good word from a friend that this is "the place to be" when it comes to knowledge of all things web development and hosting. But I also come with sincere warning. If you have come across fastnext.com (which as i have just learned through a mistake in their ticket system used to be hostony) then steer clear. I have been waiting for a response from them on the most ridiculous thing for just over 5 hours now. Apparently when I am trying to download some backup files via ftp the firewall is banning me. They have told me in my ticket that I have now been whitelisted however this does not ring true when I can still not connect to even my mail server. I have had this issue with numerous members who have all been dilligently sending me traceroute reports showing the same thing. My site is a social networking page and apparently when you check your profile too many times or gasp! try to upload or download via ftp. The firewall blocks you. Also they have a ridiculous report to a supervisor link in your ticket that states it will "punish" the tech who is not helping you? I know you guys are from ukraine but what are you going to do to ivan for not helping, send him to a gulag?

I just want you to get me access to my bloody server. Seriously Ive been having issues with them intermittently since day one but not as bad as this morning. And oddly enough I powered down all network equipment on my local area network and forced an ip change through my isp and still cannot get past the 10th hop into chi.fastbighost.com which is not a good thing. I will be moving hosts next month but have not told them this as other stories lead me to believe they may be unprofessional enough to block my access for the remainder of my term therefore hours of work stay on their server unreachable to me. My last backup was before a two day binge of coding work and I just want to get it onto my hard disk to move to a new host. Seriously just do some research and ignore those paid for affiliate sites that have hundreds of "reviews" stating how great they are. dig deeper you will see.

Horrible Service From AnchorVPS

May 17, 2007

Everything was fine a until a day or so ago.. The server went down and I asked Otto, the owner why it was down. He says it was hacked and the hard drive was corrupted. All my files were lost. So I figured yeah I didn't back up... my fault.. But he said he secured the server when I got it so part was his fault and he admitted it. So he says he'll make a new one with LXAdmin for free as an upgrade since he screwed up... Well now here today, the new server is totally down and I can't access it at all and he's not responding to my messages. So I lost my work for clients and I lost my own personal sites and the money from the people I was hosting. His service was horrible and I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.

Virpus Support Horrible.

Jul 1, 2007

My vps has been down all weekend. The stellar support team of Bob, Clide, and Ann has been of no help. They tell me to wait as we look at your problem, the tell me my problem has been escalated, to the higher level of support (who also seem to be Bob, Clide, and Ann), who have told me everything is fixed now (it isn't) and now immediately close any tickets I start, leaving no response.

Is this the normal experience with virpus? Do I need to change hosts?

VPS Land HORRIBLE, TERRIBLE Service

May 2, 2008

I signed up for a VPS Land server over a week ago, and everything worked great for the first week. I then began having issues where the server would crash and I would then be stuck at this error:

"System could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case."

Over the last 4 days or so this error has continued to plague me, and after multiple support tickets their only solution was to "Buy more RDP connections" as I was using 2, one for myself, one for my employee to use. I bought 2 more connections for $5 as they recommended and it did NOT fix the problem. In fact, since about Wednesday I've been completely locked out of the server and my support tickets have basically been replied to with:

"We can logon to your box no problem, please email us back if you continue to have issues."

Well, of course, since I'm locked out of the box, I emailed back asking if there is ANYTHING I could do to get it working, as I am losing $200/day in employee fees while he cannot work.

My replies go unheard, and I continue until late Friday night to be completely locked out of the server and my support tickets go unanswered.

I realize that I'm only paying for a cheap $30 a month VPS, but I need this to be reliable. I'm being treated as if I'm completely unimportant and now and I have lost several day's work and employee fees because of this. I even asked if I could pay more to get better service and my emails go unanswered.

I NEED a reliable VPS and cost at this point is no object. With the money I have lost while using VPS Land's HORRIBLE unreliable service I could have had a dedicated box from a real host that actually cares about whether or not it's customers are getting screwed.

I can't logon to the box and they act as though I'm lying.

How To Contact HostDime's Management? Having Horrible Times

Apr 30, 2008

how to contact hostdime's management? Because I can't get any answer that works for me from hostdime hosting and "no" answer from instantcpanellicense..

I am in a very bad situation now.. I did a special agreement with Hostdime's external cpanel seller brand instantcpanel and they don't reply my tickets since 5 days. I am not sure what to do.. My due date has arrived, I need to cancel some licenses, I need some new ones. Also they have removed my special promotional code without telling me!

I have 3 big problems will leave me in some legit sanctions but I am sure they don't care of me. I am willing to pay the problematic payments again Hostdime that's no problem.

Godaddy Setting Up A Subdomain, Horrible Customer Service!

May 30, 2008

I can't believe the hours of BS I had to go through with Godaddy hosting to get a subdomain to work. Their online "help" is horrible, incorrect, and incomplete.

For people who may have this problem, here's what I had to go through:

You can go into "Domain Management" and "Add a Subdomain" and have it point to a specific directory. Fine. That's all well and good, but that in itself does nothing and their help implies that's all you have to do and you're set, boom you have a subdomain. Not so fast.

You have to go into your "DNS Manager" and add a CNAME record with the same name as your subdomain and have it point to @. So apparently you have to change the DNS first so web browsers recognize the subdomain and get redirected to your host, then the domain management "subdomain rule" kicks in and it knows to go to a certain directory.

The funny part is the customer cervice person knew none of this. He kept insisting I had to add an A record, obviously just reading from a script. And even if I did have to mess with my DNS settings to enable my subdomain why wasn't this in the "help" on your website? Unbelieveable.

Intel DG35EC +CentOS 5.x Horrible Write Speed By ICH8 SATA Controller

May 5, 2009

we've been testing CentOS 5.3 on Intel DG35EC board (G35+ICH8+82566 Gb NIC), and found that the write speed out of 7200rpm SATA-II drive, connected to on-board ICH8 controller, is consistently under 10MB/sec which is quite horrible!

the same set of hardware can get 100MB+/sec transfer rate with Debian 5.0 and FreeBSD 7.1, just not the CentOS5.3! it doesn't matter whether AHCI mode is selected in BIOS or not, and of course BIOS has been updated with latest version.

DTH Is Simple Great

May 27, 2009

Because i have couple site hosted by both hosting company (DTH=downtownhost and TCH=totalchoicehosting) and have positive experience with them i needed to make decision who will be hoster for my new project.

The problem was by both company and by 99% others that traceroute command is not enabled by default and it is essential for my new project.

After exchanging a couple emails with both companies DTH was winner again because DTH allow on shared hosting traceroute command (in situation that you need it).

Answer from TCH was that only on VPS (semi-dedicated) is traceroute command possible and not on shared envirovment.

I must again praise DTH for the way how they handle with their customers and that they are ready to do everything for their customers. Not wonder that they are one of the greatest hosting company.

Medialayer Still Great

Jul 14, 2008

I'll keep it short and sweet. I signed up for medialayer on December 23, 2007. Its been more than 6 months and there has been not one unscheduled downtime, the support is phenomenal on the rare occasion I need to use it and its the fastest host I've ever used, dedicated or shared. My sites have been on the front page of Digg, Osnews, Stumbleupon and I've yet to see my hosting so much as shudder. Unbelievably powerful servers. They are accommodating, friendly and brilliant.

No, they don't have terabytes of bandwidth and it doesn't cost $1 per month; but it doesn't get much better than this otherwise.

Hosted sites ticketed to mod team. Keep up the great work, Medialayer.

Mddhosting Is Great!

Nov 22, 2008

After getting completely fed up with bluehost (my site was so slow!), I recently switched to mddhosting. I had considered other hosts, but luckily, I found this forum before switching -- and I discovered mddhosting here!

I'd highly recommend mddhosting. They took the time to talk to me and answer all my questions before I switched (and I asked a lot of questions!). After I took the plunge, they basically did all the work for me migrating my website. I was shocked! There was one small glitch in the migration as some software wasn't installed on their server that I needed, but they cleared this up in less than an hour after I submitted my support ticket. Since then, its been smooth sailing. My site is really fast -- I've never had to wait for a page to load. I host some videos, so I was a little worried about these, but they are just as fast as the rest of my content. The only other time I've needed support was when I changed SSL certificates, and again, they pretty much handled everything for me.

Great service! I'd highly recommend them.

I also like calling HostGator and not talking with someone in India who has no knowledge of what I'm trying to get help with and doesn't even know much about that company, I get that enough when I call Dell lol. VPS Media Great 1st Month

Jun 3, 2008

I found vps media through WHT about a month ago, I saw they allowed several gaming servers on their vpses, and it was interesting to give a CS 1.6 and CS Source a try on a vps.

I signed up using a 20% off special, which is pretty cheap, compared to other xen providers.

I've been really happy with their service, as they are very easy to communicate with, and I love their notifications whenever a scheduled maintenance is due.

Their community is still small, but they're growing little by little, I saw a big spike of people registered in their forums right after a new WHT offer post. Their blog is current, well written and specially good content, mostly just news about their service, but always interesting in reading them.

Hostamina.com Is A Great Web Host!

Nov 24, 2008

So earlier this month I decided to buy hosting from Hostamina.com - I called them on their toll free number and they seemed like they would be very helpful and they said they were willing to help me from the ground up because I'm kind of new to websites.

It kills me to say this (because everyone says it's so easy), but I barely even know HTML. Anyway, I signed up with them and didn't even know where to begin. They showed me where I could choose from thousands of free website templates, and then they even helped me customize it! They explained to me what was wrong with my HTML code and how to fix it, and even fixed some of it themselves!

So, after reading so many hosting horror stories all over the internet this made me feel kind of lucky that I picked a good one for my first host.

Also, my pages always seem to load really fast - I think this has something to do with them not overselling like a lot of the supposedly unlimited space/bandwidth companies, but I'm not quite sure.

Racksrv.com Review - So Far, Great

Sep 11, 2008

I need to remind you before you read any of this, I have only been with them (racksrv.com) for half of a month, but within that half of month, I have tested them (racksrv.com) in many, many ways.

I couldn't see many reviews of them (racksrv.com), so thought I would give one. I will keep updating this review as time pass's.

Alright, where to start. Some time ago, I came to them in need of a dedicated server. I would like to first point out their support / sales. To be honest, test them. Send a ticket in, and see how long it takes them to reply. Even on weekends, go for it.

My point is, somehow, they seem to answer all of my tickets, whether they be sales or support, super fast. I literally have not seen them reply later than around 30 minutes, ever. Most times, it was way, way under that.

They must have it synced with their PDA's or something. Well, either way its amazing. I ask questions, regarding anything, and they always come up with an answer for me.

Now onto when my services was setup. I was sort of a special customer. I needed a special deal, something they did not really have listed on their site. I contacted them on the weekend, and got reply's to all my questions.

They told me what they could do for me, when they could set it up, and everything was done correctly. They setup the server when they were supposed to, they installed the right operating system, and on top of that they updated the server for me (only a simple "yum update", but still, never saw that from any host).

Onto the network. It is quite amazing. From North America, the pings are still low. There are no slow downs, and the port you get is dedicated. Yes, dedicated. I know that as a fact, as I have tested it at many different times of the day, and getting 100mbit full was possible every time.

They are a bit expensive yes, but to be honest, its worth it. All in all, so far, they are great.

I know you are IMMEDIATELY thinking, "bah, it's only been half a month, how can you review over that short of a period?!". Simply because I have been with over 30 providers over the years. And I have seen nothing as good as this.

Like I previously said, I will post another review later on or update this one. That is about it.

Great Time With Sentris So Far

Aug 13, 2008

I'm coming upto the end of my third month with Sentris.com

Their prices are good, support has had good response times and resolution on problems I have had. They seem to sort out nearly anything despite only being on basic management.

I haven't had any downtime, on a good network and machine. When I first ordered my server they didn't have the said processor in stock, said they would get it the next day or that I could upgrade to a better processor; which I did and my server was up within a few hours .

I've seen a few negative reviews about Sentris from the past but not many new positive reviews so I though I'd right one for them.

GalaxyVisions - Great VPS Host

We spent days and days looking at all the available options for a VPS account. We decided on Galaxyvisions.com after reading some reviews on other sites.

We've been in the Internet business since 1996 and have used literally dozens of hosts. Galaxy Visions ROCKS! The level of support they have provided is seldom matched - quick, efficient, and knowledgeable. Great prices also - what else could you ask for?

I usually don't take the time to review products or services that I pay for - but after Galaxy quickly helped us out of a major jam with the VPS account - I felt compelled to do so.

They completely rebuilt the account for us within a couple hours of the request - we usually wait longer than that for any kind of response at all from other host.
