Colo4Dallas Raising Rates 20%, Anyone Else Get The Notice
May 1, 2007
I just got a notice from Leslie at Colo4Dallas that they are raising their rates by 20% effective June, 2007. Did anyone else get this notice yet today? And in order to get the lower price (20% increase), I will have to sign a 12 month contract. So for example, my 1/2 rack will go from $399 to $478, or if I choose to stay month to month, the new rate will be $600.

What are some current prices I can expect for a 200-300Mb/s commitment delivered over a 1Gb/s connection in NYC ?
From some any provider besides Cogent and HE, companies like Verizon / Savvis / Level3 / Internap or any other top providers out there.

I was reviewing my colocation bill and noted that XO communications had increased my cabinet electrical fee by $80.
I have a contract that fixes the price for the term of the contract (2 years.)
I telephoned XO and was told *directly* that there are loopholes in every contract, and as far as they were concerned, they were using this one. The woman did not tapdance - she spit it right out like it was reheresed. She, and others at XO, further stated that they were raising the rates for electricity in order to remain competitive. I referred back to my contract; they referred to their Terms and Conditions.
Well, their Terms and Conditions state nothing about rate increases, and moreover, states unambiguously that when there is a conflict between their Terms and Conditions as posted on their web site, and a Service Order & Agreement (contract)(SOA) the SOA is the controlling document.
Knowing this has not helped. I even sent an email to the General Manager, Kevin Odden, who insisted that I fax a copy of my SOA because he simply could not trust that I typed the following to him accurately:
E. RATES AND CHARGES: Service rates and charges shall be set forth in the Terms and Conditions or in this SOA and shall remain in effect during the initial Term. In the event of a conflict between the rates and charges set forth in the Terms and Conditions and those established in this SOA, the rates and charges set forth in this SOA shall be controlling.
I know others here have XO. I am thinking Class Action.

Even though it is not mentioned anywhere on their web site, powweb billed me $8.77/mo instead of the advertised $7.77. I asked about this in their forum and that << removed >> Ian promptly deleted my post. Has anyone else heard about this?

I have a web site currently at ipower. Until a few months ago, the transfer rate was good at over 1.5 mega-bytes per seconds, but after a transition to new servers, it's now down to 350 kilo-bytes per second.
Ipower's advertising claims 15,000GB bandwith per month, but in order to get that, it would require a continuous transfer rate of 5.787 mega-bytes per second, 16 1/2 fold increase in transfer rate over the current 350 kilo-byte per second rate. Yet another example of false advertising.
Anyway, other than signing up with a service, testing download rates, canceling the seriver, signing up with another service, is there anyone here that can recommend a web hosting service with around 1 to 2 megabyte per second transfer rates, or a link to a review of web hosts that includes transfer rates?

I currently have a server sitting with Provider A and another server sitting on provider B. I only recently purchased the server with provider B and planned to phase out server A. My concern is, when I ping both servers from the same location, server B's times are nearly twice server B (90+ ms versus 48ms). How big of a difference will larger ping times like this make with respect to the end user (e.g., web page loading, etc?)

Maybe this will help in my search for a web hosting or VPS site. Please reply to this list if you know the data. I'm showing tranfer rates and bandwidth in bytes not bits.
Ipower
Observed transfer rate, throttled to 360KBPS, virtually guaranteeed though. I've seen peaks over 600GB / month with no complaints from Ipower.
Westhost
Average transfer rate 170KBPS, peak rate 250KBPS.

Does anyone know if they have power limits? Ie if I pay for 4u of space, can I throw in a dual xeon system with 16 drives and have them not complain? I'll call them monday, but in the meantime I am just curious if anyone is doing something similar. I don't see anything about power limits on the site.

This will be an ongoing review on my experience with Colo4. I will update it as time goes on. Our experience comes from having rented servers for the past few years and wanting more server and more control, at less cost. Going colo made a lot of sense to us, so we finally took the plunge.
We first approached C4D six weeks ago after reading the reviews posted here. The initial phone call with Patrick Chapa was pleasant, but brief. I really just wanted to get down pricing and learn a little bit more about the facility.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. We were ready to make the server purchase, so it was time to nail down all the details regarding the contract. Gave Patrick a call back.
He was very straightforward, which I very much appreciate. He listened to what we needed, and made suggestions based on that, without trying to push anything onto us we didn't need. In the end, we still came in $500 less than our monthly budget (Patrick knew our budget all along, and I have to think he could have charged us more based on this knowledge, but didn't). We ended up going with a full rack, 2x 20a power drops, 10Mbps premium, 20Mbps value. C4D also provided two remote access APC PDU's and a 2960G switch with a hot backup.
Contract was signed and immediately a ticket was setup in their support area asking all kinds of initial setup questions. We also went on and placed the order with Dell for the servers (Friday afternoon at 3pm EST) and to our suprise, all servers arrived at C4D on Tuesday afternoon around 2pm EST. The switch C4D was providing arrived a few hours later. By 10pm EST the switch was setup, as were the pdu's, servers and their individual drac's.
The two support people I've dealt with so far have been Marc U. and Ricky V. (won't post their last names in case they don't want them posted). They have both been very helpful, even answering a couple of pretty silly questions on my part.
I put in a new ticket this morning and it was answered within 8 minutes by Ricky, with a promised resolution time of 1.5 hours (there's no real rush on this particular issue).
I'd give Patrick a score of 10 (1-10 scale). He was a true pleasure to work with. I'd also give post-sales support (so far) a 10.
The only thing I wish C4D had -- and I know I am certainly in the minority here -- is an MCSE or MCSA on-site, or at least a list of references to local providers that have been approved by C4D. In our business (vacation rentals), we have many homeowners who are out of town and have no idea which local vendors they can trust. We provide a pre-screened list of vendors for them and it is something they greatly appreciate.
So far, no regrets at all going from renting servers to colo, and no regrets going with C4D.

I know C4D is a very good provider already. Searching about Zogmo, it seems no bad reviews at all. Houston or Dallas? Which one do you recommend? Going with Zogmo will save more money, especially with their current promotion

if someone can suggest a colocation company with better support than Colo4Dallas. I have been with them for a few years now. Our server was down all last night. The only way to report that is through their web-based ticketing system.
If tickets could be created with an email, I can trigger an email if my monitoring company reports that server is down but they don't allow that. I also had a bad experience with firewall support they provided. My server was down for two days because they did not do any tests after making changes. They did apologize for screwing it but that's about it.
Is this to be expected from COLO companies. Am I expecting too much from a Colo company? Are there colo companies in DFW Metroplex that have better support?

getting a 1/4th rack from either Colo4Dallas or Zogmo. So far, both have been great in answering pre-sales questions and they both have great reviews as far as support goes.
My question comes down to more of the networking side. Currently, Colo4Dallas uses Level 3, InterNap, and Time Warner. Zogmo uses Cogent and Verio. I know that Cogent gets its bad rep from providers overselling their bandwidth, but are they really a good bandwidth provider as a primary provider? From what I have heard, InterNap has a better network, so it would seem that Colo4Dallas has much better bandwidth operation going.
Does anyone have any comments as to which network would have better connection speeds and uptime? I'm not necessarily looking for the better deal cost wise, but I'm looking for the better network/support.

I have sent a DMCA notice to softlayer because I saw warez forum thats abusing USA laws and they are giving away lots of hacked rapidshare accounts to its users. So I have made my complaint but I didnt said what infringed my copyrights. And softlayer can see the warez site and decide them selves.
So this what I got in reply after 2 weeks-
Quote:
Please review our DMCA procedures which follow the OCILLA. Also note, the sworn statements and all other information listed on our DMCA page are not only required but mandatory for any DMCA report. This will allow you to specifically identify the intellectual property that you own and is being infringed upon, which is required by law.
There are many verified third party DMCA/COPYRIGHT agencies who act on behalf of the intellectual property holders who can verify and submit these claims on behalf of the intellectual property owners. This will insure that legally, the intellectual property owner and the ISP is protected in the event of an account termination.
Softlayer DMCA information [url]

[url]
And they didnt took any actions against that site and what I see is that warez site is operating till now on softlayer servers. Looks like softlayer didnt warned the site admins too. 1 month passed after my complaint and its still operating.

I design Web sites for clients, and also am a hosting reseller. The problem I'm having is selling all these hosting packages, but I don't know when their hosting package expires, except for periodically logging in and checking the setup date. I am currently using hostgator with the whm (WebHost Manager). Is there a way to set it up for 1 year and have it e-mail me when an account is about to expire, or is there some really cool database program elsewhere that I can use to help facillitate all these Web hosting packages?

One of the sites I help run has 1.5 million pages of parts that can be ordered and information about those parts. We started seeing a ton of hits at around 20-30 pages per second over the past couple days.
There is no information about them on the internet and they are also masking as GoogleBot.
Be on the lookout as I am pretty sure they are trying to steal content and post it up for search results. They are using Amazon EC2 servers to do it also.
This is how they are identifying themselves:
Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Adtuitionbot/1.0; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)"
Offending IPs: 174.129.155.59, 72.44.52.93
In a 24 hour period, we blocked 408,821 requests from them.

How much Notice do I need to give nocster/burst before cancelling?
Not ready to cancell just yet but probably will be at the end of next month. (Moving to co-lo and as i'm in the UK burstnet's datacenter would be a bit far to travel so Won't be using them for Co-lo)
Couldn't find mention of the minimum notice period on their site.

I am in the process of fighting a Hosting company on a dedicated server. It was turned off without notice a couple of months ago. They said I had not paid last years bill for this server (10 months ago). When I sent them the paypal confirmation number from last year finally they agreeed but said I owed an inflated 2008-2009 bill. The first bill I got was when the server was suspended. The bill increased over 20%. In order to get my clients back online I paid the increased bill but sent the initial price guarantee and asked for a refund of the difference. What I got was a half apology and the double talk below. I switched hosting companies and asked for a pro-rated refund and even though the server is paid up until Sept 2009 they have suspended the server. I am going to leave the hosting companies name out.
"Dear Mark,
As explained by Tom, the amount you paid is the amount that was due.
Since you originally purchased your server, our costs have risen by approximately 46%. The increase in price for your server only represents approximately 16%. While in the past, we have been able to absorb price increases and not pass them along, unfortunately, on this occasion we had no choice but to pass along part of the increase - the increase applied is just over half the increase we have personally seen since the start of this year. We have been able to keep the increase low through additional cost savings and reducing our profit margins, but, there is a limit to that and we unfortunately hit with the latest increase we've been hit with.
The issue with your server earlier this month was due to human error. We do not have any due invoices from 2007 (any unpaid would have been passed to collections), and as we are human, have gotten into the habit of simply looking at the day and month. One of my billing staff members alerted me that your invoice was overdue, believing it was a 2008 invoice due 1st August 2008 and requested that I authorise a disconnection. I then looked at it and also missed the 2007 date. Tom unfortunately does not have full access to billing details and cannot correct (nor view) errors such as that.
In terms of the invoicing - the system expected a recurring payment, through the Paypal subscription, to occur automatically and this is why no invoice was generated. As your invoice last year was manually paid, there was no subscription to update and pay. As a result, I had to manually update your account to reflect the payment details and manually generate the invoice. The invoice in your account when you paid the invoice correctly reflected the $1274.20 value. One of the emails quoted above, which should have been received after the emailed invoice, stated "generated the correct invoice for the 2008 to 2009 billing period.". I am sorry if that wasn't clear enough.

I really do not want to mention the name of the hosting. I have been with them since the beginning of 2007.
My VPS was shut down about 15 hours ago because there might be a problem with the recurring payment. Actually I was informed that the payment has been processed and approved successfully last week. And there is no any email telling me that there is problem with the recurring payment.
I have been asking their support to re-start my VPS first but they said this is the sales issue. It has to be handled by the sales. Just waiting....... waiting..... Very disappoint!
Will you shut down the VPS of your customers without any prior notice?

I have a dedicated server with a provider. They have a notice period of 30 days, to cancel the server. The billing date of the server is 13th of every month.
I sent them the cancellation form on 30th of last month, asking them to terminate the server by 1st of next month (thereby 30 days notice). But they say that they will bill me on this 13th for another full month, and they'll cancel the server only on 13th of next month! WTF? So, the notice period becomes 43 days!
I have never experienced something like this with other providers I'm using but just wanted to know..

Not sure if this is even feasible but is there any server side software that will monitor the bandwidth usage on the server/nic and notify/email the admin when certain mbps levels have been reached in a certain time line. Just seeing if there is anything that I can use to not go over my 95th percentile but still keep good flow on the server.
