How Does Server Notice Period Thing Work
Jun 2, 2008
I have a dedicated server with a provider. They have a notice period of 30 days, to cancel the server. The billing date of the server is 13th of every month.
I sent them the cancellation form on 30th of last month, asking them to terminate the server by 1st of next month (thereby 30 days notice). But they say that they will bill me on this 13th for another full month, and they'll cancel the server only on 13th of next month! WTF? So, the notice period becomes 43 days!
I have never experienced something like this with other providers I'm using but just wanted to know..

say you run a script like DIGG and then it just became huge and huge and one day u find out that a server cannot run it alone, that is u need to get multi servers to cope with the traffic and database requests. How would people go about doing that? Is it the script implementation side of change or just server side of change?

I am in the process of fighting a Hosting company on a dedicated server. It was turned off without notice a couple of months ago. They said I had not paid last years bill for this server (10 months ago). When I sent them the paypal confirmation number from last year finally they agreeed but said I owed an inflated 2008-2009 bill. The first bill I got was when the server was suspended. The bill increased over 20%. In order to get my clients back online I paid the increased bill but sent the initial price guarantee and asked for a refund of the difference. What I got was a half apology and the double talk below. I switched hosting companies and asked for a pro-rated refund and even though the server is paid up until Sept 2009 they have suspended the server. I am going to leave the hosting companies name out.
"Dear Mark,
As explained by Tom, the amount you paid is the amount that was due.
Since you originally purchased your server, our costs have risen by approximately 46%. The increase in price for your server only represents approximately 16%. While in the past, we have been able to absorb price increases and not pass them along, unfortunately, on this occasion we had no choice but to pass along part of the increase - the increase applied is just over half the increase we have personally seen since the start of this year. We have been able to keep the increase low through additional cost savings and reducing our profit margins, but, there is a limit to that and we unfortunately hit with the latest increase we've been hit with.
The issue with your server earlier this month was due to human error. We do not have any due invoices from 2007 (any unpaid would have been passed to collections), and as we are human, have gotten into the habit of simply looking at the day and month. One of my billing staff members alerted me that your invoice was overdue, believing it was a 2008 invoice due 1st August 2008 and requested that I authorise a disconnection. I then looked at it and also missed the 2007 date. Tom unfortunately does not have full access to billing details and cannot correct (nor view) errors such as that.
In terms of the invoicing - the system expected a recurring payment, through the Paypal subscription, to occur automatically and this is why no invoice was generated. As your invoice last year was manually paid, there was no subscription to update and pay. As a result, I had to manually update your account to reflect the payment details and manually generate the invoice. The invoice in your account when you paid the invoice correctly reflected the $1274.20 value. One of the emails quoted above, which should have been received after the emailed invoice, stated "generated the correct invoice for the 2008 to 2009 billing period.". I am sorry if that wasn't clear enough.

I have a big problem with my web hosts!
I had a domain registered with them, then I registered some more domains with them.
My original domain went down last Sunday and I checked the dns status which said it had gone into the redemption period (they are supposed to have an automatic renewal system).
I contacted them and after about 5 days, they got back to me saying there was a problem with the payment for the new domains, so they did not renew my original domain.
However, I did not receive any communication to say there was a problem with the payments and I even have a receipt from them to say I have paid! I also have multiple emails in my sent box to them following up the payments. They did respond to some of the emails, but they never mentioned payment issues.
I definitely do not want to lose my domain, but I urgently need some data from my site.
I know they back up their servers, so where do I stand on getting my data back?
I contacted the registration company (aitdomains), who said I need to get the hosting company to contact them to get the domain out of the redemption period (I was trying to do it myself so I could move the domain to a new hosting company). Without the hosts, it seems as though I cannot do anything.
I'm losing business every day my site is down.
Has anyone got any advice? Do they have the right to not renew one of my domains without any warning whatsoever, especially seeing as the actual issue is with a different domain? The domain with the actual issue is up and running by the way.

Do you think that having a 30 day cancellation period for a server is a bit excessive? This seems like ploy so that they get an extra month out of you don't you think? Do you think we know whats going to happen, and plan a month ahead of time for it? Some of these providers have 30 day cancellation periods, which I think is absurd.

time to write few words about the providers I've been working with. I was with Hetzner for about a year (2007-ish). Initially I've been reluctant a bit to go with them because of a high setup fee, but after exploring other options I've decided to give them a shot.
For those interested, all my correspondance with them was in English.
Ordering process was easy and painless. Initially I'd ordered DS3000 server, and in less than 24 hours I got login credentials for it. Due to some last-minute business changes I have made some calculations and realized that DS5000 would have fitted my needs better, and I asked whether it's possible to "upgrade" my account to DS5000 before any work has been done on DS3000. They politely replied I should cancel my old order within 14 days and I'll be given a full refund on "no questions asked" policy stipulated by a german trade law, I suppose, which gives you right to cancel (within 2 weeks) any contract that has been arranged remotely.
Now that felt good. The only catch is that the cancellation letter had to be in writing, so I had to find a fax machine from which it could be sent to their billing dept.
In the meantime I have ordered a DS5000 and again received a fully provisioned box in less than 24 hours. Few days after I received my first invoice, stating 83.19 EUR setup fee and 49.58 monthly recurring fee. Huh? Only then I've realized that their stated prices include VAT which can't be billed to non-EU residents. Excellent!
Now, to the service provided. Over a year long period, I only had two downtimes: one planned and one uplanned. The unplanned one was a half-hour long network outage. The planned downtime was due to the power lines work in the datacenter my box was in. It had been announced 2 weeks in advance, and the downtime was about 2 hours.
It is worth noting that all automated emails I've received from Hetzner were bilingual (German/English).
I had nothing but praise for their services/price ratio. Their network is excellent, and the hardware is top-notch. Keep in mind that my bandwidth requirements were low, as I have never used more than 500 GB/month.
To summarize:
For: excellent hardware deal, network (for European users), remote reboot and network rescue system provided free of charge
Against: if you need more than 1 TB/month, you should look elsewhere. KVM/IP charged extra.

so after 16 months using vps servers i thing i have it all cleared up. There is no such thing as the 10/10-allmighty-everything-is-so-good provider it all depends in what are you OK with.
Now t3h facts, what i care about a provider is
- Price
- Performance
- Uptime-AKA-Reliability
- Provided Resources
I've been with 4 different providers (SolarVPS, Knownhost, JarguarPC, FutureHosting)
I will not do a long review but i will tell you some facts of my experience with them.
I started with SolarVPS (Mercury Plan 256MB-384MB-10G-200G-Cpanel-unmanaged-33.75), i started having a lot of problems, black zone alerts every day most of the time, bad performance, the server felt really slow, but after many months in the vps market i think it was because 256MB with Cpanel don’t play well, specially if you have a busy forum that needs many apache childs and lots of mysql usage. After 1 months using it i jumped off the ship to Knownhost. I started blaming SolarVPS but then i realized it was because 256MB weren't enough for my need. So i can't really talk about them, only 3 weeks but i don't think ill be going back , maybe providers shouldn’t offer Cpanel with 256MB systems.
Then the Knownhost Experience (384M-768M-10G-175G-Plesk-semimanaged-42.50), Now after a bad first experience I wanted to go back to shared, but seeing a lot of good reviews about a starter company at that time, I decided to go with them, I used them for 11 months, I can tell you they are reliable, they are good priced, but the performance was my problem.
For example running WHT-UnixBench scored like 60-80 on knownhost, and I had problems with mysql, a lot of queries took too much time and I kept having visitors to the point that apache always reaches the server limit and mysql just wasn’t ready to give the results, so the server also reached the memory limits and virtuozzo killed some services and all that, to the point that just wasn’t ok with it so I started looking where to move. If you need some reliable service, looking closer to that 99.999% uptime and don’t have too much of that resource intensive sites, then imho knownhost is your choice.
I do not know that much of Microprocessors but what I hear is that at this time Intel is really better than AMD, but knownhost stays with AMD for many reasons im sure, I just think that the servers would be a lot faster if they were using Xeons instead of Opterons, but once again I’m not 100% sure
Ok now this is where JaguarPC comes into play, when I was looking for the new provider I find out that Jag was running an awesome deal, if i was moving from another provider they will give me 2 months free, and a lot of specials ->(384MB-1G-30G-450G-fully-managed-Plesk-33.50) <- , so that looked like a really really good deal, I did not hesitate and signed up quite fast.
Started up really bad, when they servers were badly configured so they had to restart the entire node to fix settings many times, virtuozzo was going crazy killing processes and all that, but they fixed it and after 5 months with them everything is really good, then only problem is the reliability-uptime, I can’t get above 99.89%, they have many downtimes, call it “fixing settings”, call it “patching kernel”, call it “getting better”, still it is a downtime, it is a client calling you cause they cant access the mail, or something like that. (BTW im monitoring the server with host tracker).
So why am I staying with them? , because I get a better Prices $$$ , I get more resources, and at this moment my business does not require 99.999% , im ok with 99.9% uptime, and also my sites works really faster, mysql handles the load like a champ. But if they could increase the uptime they will be the closer to 10/10.
If you noticed I didn’t mention futurehosting its because I use them for small experiments, like lighttpd, server administration, as backup server, and other administration learning related tasks. But the servers works really good, im using the Chicago DC and getting better latency than Texas
I hope some day I will use futurehosting more and give a proper review, right now im using the 384MB_SLM-10G-200GB-NoPanel-20$ , everything looks quite good but running unixbench scored less than jaguarpc.
Its just a matter of what you need, and what are you OK, im a student and give hosting to friends and family, I have my own forum that gets many visitors and it is really database intensive, so at this moment im staying with jaguarpc and hope to continue that way

I am wondering what grace period after the due date your dedicated server provider offers you before suspending your server.
Please let me know how many days before the due date your provider sends out your invoices , and after late how many days before they suspend your dedicated server. We are looking to amend our policy on the matter and would like to hear what others in the industry are doing.

I have built a few servers at my home office.
I wanted to ask if there is a data center that might provide additional band wish or backup internet.
By backup internet i mean.
If my internet goes down. It will still be running on a second network.
Not sure how that would truly work however.
My server does connect wireless and the speed is excellent.
However like every provider at times it can go down. Weather, Maintenance etc.
[Mods if this is in the wrong forum just move it to the correct one i think this is the place to put it however]

I have a site where our budget is very constrained, and we're maxing out our unmetered pipe. The majority of the bandwidth is taken up by an active forum.
I offloaded most of the static content (images, .js, .css files) to a CDN (SimpleCDN) which I've been pretty happy with, the costs are very reasonable and fit within our limited budget.
They offered a service where if the content was not found on their network, it would check on our server for the file, retrieve it, and then serve it up from then on. Which was perfect for us as it allows us to use the CDN to serve image files uploaded by users in such a way that it's transparent to the end user.
However they're discontinuing this service, and though they're offering a similar service (based on rsync), they're charging $150 setup fee! So basically I have to pay $150 to keep using the service I've been using for a while. Which I can't really do.
So I'm trying to think of alternatives. I don't think I really need a full bore CDN, while we do have users from around the world, it's not a business site so a few ms isn't going to be the end of the world.
I just need a file hosting solution that has decent performance and fairly inexpensive bandwidth.
It's only 100-200GB / month maybe. At SimpleCDN that was only costing $8 / month.
I looked at Amazon, but they charge 1 cent for 10,000 requests which for us adds up very fast.
I'd almost think of just signing up for a Dreamhost account, but I would think using them to host just our images probably goes against their ToS.

I just got my servers up, DNS servers what not and my main plesk server for shared/reseller hosting.
Now for the weirdest thing ever!
I started working on my plesk packages a few days ago, after I got plesk installed.
Systems stats as follows
Supermicro AS1021M-T2 barebone
[url]
Has 16GB of infeon DDR2-667 memory.
2 250GB hard drives in mirrored configuration with the Acera 9500 w/ 256MB of memory
Running Cent OS 4.4
For some reason, Everytime I go into Plesk, or any of the websites that are contained in Plesk, The nic card drops out, wont allow any activity to get through, both ways.

I have sent a DMCA notice to softlayer because I saw warez forum thats abusing USA laws and they are giving away lots of hacked rapidshare accounts to its users. So I have made my complaint but I didnt said what infringed my copyrights. And softlayer can see the warez site and decide them selves.
So this what I got in reply after 2 weeks-
Quote:
Please review our DMCA procedures which follow the OCILLA. Also note, the sworn statements and all other information listed on our DMCA page are not only required but mandatory for any DMCA report. This will allow you to specifically identify the intellectual property that you own and is being infringed upon, which is required by law.
There are many verified third party DMCA/COPYRIGHT agencies who act on behalf of the intellectual property holders who can verify and submit these claims on behalf of the intellectual property owners. This will insure that legally, the intellectual property owner and the ISP is protected in the event of an account termination.
Softlayer DMCA information [url]
[url]
[url]
And they didnt took any actions against that site and what I see is that warez site is operating till now on softlayer servers. Looks like softlayer didnt warned the site admins too. 1 month passed after my complaint and its still operating.

I design Web sites for clients, and also am a hosting reseller. The problem I'm having is selling all these hosting packages, but I don't know when their hosting package expires, except for periodically logging in and checking the setup date. I am currently using hostgator with the whm (WebHost Manager). Is there a way to set it up for 1 year and have it e-mail me when an account is about to expire, or is there some really cool database program elsewhere that I can use to help facillitate all these Web hosting packages?

One of the sites I help run has 1.5 million pages of parts that can be ordered and information about those parts. We started seeing a ton of hits at around 20-30 pages per second over the past couple days.
There is no information about them on the internet and they are also masking as GoogleBot.
Be on the lookout as I am pretty sure they are trying to steal content and post it up for search results. They are using Amazon EC2 servers to do it also.
This is how they are identifying themselves:
Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Adtuitionbot/1.0; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)"
Offending IPs: 174.129.155.59, 72.44.52.93
In a 24 hour period, we blocked 408,821 requests from them.

I really do not want to mention the name of the hosting. I have been with them since the beginning of 2007.
My VPS was shut down about 15 hours ago because there might be a problem with the recurring payment. Actually I was informed that the payment has been processed and approved successfully last week. And there is no any email telling me that there is problem with the recurring payment.
I have been asking their support to re-start my VPS first but they said this is the sales issue. It has to be handled by the sales. Just waiting....... waiting..... Very disappoint!
Will you shut down the VPS of your customers without any prior notice?

I just got a notice from Leslie at Colo4Dallas that they are raising their rates by 20% effective June, 2007. Did anyone else get this notice yet today? And in order to get the lower price (20% increase), I will have to sign a 12 month contract. So for example, my 1/2 rack will go from $399 to $478, or if I choose to stay month to month, the new rate will be $600.

Just seeing if there is anything that I can use to not go over my 95th percentile but still keep good flow on the server.

I doubt that anyone can solve this, but here goes...
This is my first server, and I simply cannot get it to work.
MY CONFIGURATION:
Speedstream 4200 DSL modem w/ethernet line to NETGEAR Wireless Router (WPN824). The router connects with CAT5 cable to my Windows XP server computer (which has the latest Apache and PHP). Wirelss signal is used for my other computer.
I am running Apache with no-ip as well. My site name is: [url]
MY PROBLEM:
I have set up HTTP port forwarding in my modem (which for some reason acts as a router as well) to port 80, with my server address as 192.168.254.10 The problem is that I cannot connect to my web site within my network. My friend is able to view the website from his home.
I am not able to configure my NETGEAR router to accept the port forwarding of 192.168.254.10 because it isn't a "valid LAN address" --- but I can't configure my modem to use a different address either.
1. My modem is plugged into the Internet Port on my WPN824
2. My XP server is plugged into one of the four LAN PORTS on my WPN824
3. My modem is set to forward port 80 to 192.168.254.10
4. My WPN824 is set to forward port 80 to your XP server address 192.168.1.3
Obviously something is wrong with my guess, because just forwarding the modem to 192.168.254.10 doesn't seem like it could get my friend connected all the way through to your Apache server.
IP ADDRESSES:
Default Gateway: 192.168.254.254
XP/Apache: 192.168.1.3
Speedstream 4200 Modem: 192.168.254.254
NETGEAR: 192.168.1.1
Server (forwarded on 80): 192.168.254.10
The 'default gateway' is set to (according to an ipconfig run) 192.168.1.1 (NETGEAR router) However, the 'default gateway' in the NETGEAR router page says that "gateway IP address" is 192.168.254.254 (modem)...
STATIC IP?
Also, my Network Connections is set to 'obtain IP address automatically'. I have tried to set it to a static IP, but it doesn't work. The router wil not allow me to forward to the server with any IP that is?.254.?
Unfortunately, this setup is very complicated and I think that something is conflicting.
I have this felling that I'm really close but that something very small is in the way.
