getting a 1/4th rack from either Colo4Dallas or Zogmo. So far, both have been great in answering pre-sales questions and they both have great reviews as far as support goes.
My question comes down to more of the networking side. Currently, Colo4Dallas uses Level 3, InterNap, and Time Warner. Zogmo uses Cogent and Verio. I know that Cogent gets its bad rep from providers overselling their bandwidth, but are they really a good bandwidth provider as a primary provider? From what I have heard, InterNap has a better network, so it would seem that Colo4Dallas has much better bandwidth operation going.
Does anyone have any comments as to which network would have better connection speeds and uptime? I'm not necessarily looking for the better deal cost wise, but I'm looking for the better network/support.
I am looking for a VPS host in the $50 dollar range for 2 small to medium sized vBulletin forums. I have read about RAM usage and hope that the price I can afford can handle a not so big vBulletin forum or two, I will optimize them anyway but still. I am also concerned about mysql max connection errors.
Two, among others, of the names that I keep seeing good things about are liquidweb and jaguarpc, however I notice through google cache that liquidweb used to have a customer forum, but it doesn't seem to exist anymore? maybe there is a good explanation that I am missing? but support forum not existing anymore doesn't sound good in my opinion.
Jagaurpc's own forums has around 30 'emergency maintenance' threads over the last 6 weeks alone, again that doesn't sound good to me, even if it means that they are on top of it still so many 'emergency' situations can't be good?
Of course I prefer to have managed VPS as the above two seem to offer and helpfulness especially initially during setup. I hope to get opinions on these couple of issues specific to them and general recommendations on VPS
I've searched on this site, and there are quite a few posts about selecting appropriate switches for different applications. I'm looking for similar advice from the networking gurus out there.
I need a reliable switch (probably only need L2?) to connect 6 Sun Fire X2100 servers in a colo rack. Each server has two network ports. I use one for the public addresses; and the second for a private, management network.
In an ideal world, I'd love to run the servers diskless, and consolidate all the drives into a separate, dedicated storage server running Solaris and ZFS. I'm guessing that I would need GigE ports on the switch to get maximum performance out of an iSCSI SAN?
That might push the price much higher though.
I'm currently running 3 of these servers with a Catalyst 2912XL, and I've been very pleased with the reliability of this switch (and it was super cheap on ebay). It's setup with two VLANs (one for the public net, one for the private net). The thing has been running for about a year without a single reboot.
While Cisco seems to be the favored brand, I'm considering a few other choices as well...
Foundry EdgeIron 2402CF
Extreme Network Summit 200-24
Cisco Catalyst 2950-24
Cisco Catalyst 2960-24
Just wondering what the pros and cons of these various units might be. And do I need a separate (GigE?) network for iSCSI, or could it function on the same interfaces used for the management (and MySQL) traffic?
I use APC Netshelter cabinets now; I have a need for some cabinets with 23-inch wide rails, capable of holding telco muxes, rectifiers, batteries, etc. Any suggestions on cabinet?
Something that would blend in with APC Netshelters (black, bowed/curved door on cold aisle) would be nice. I know I've seen a cabinet very similar to Netshelter delivered from NetApp, but with a grey/off-black color, and 1-piece door on the hot aisle. If APC is just sourcing their cabinets from some manufacturer who takes engineering requests, it would be great to find out who makes them.
My account has been hacked with every index.php page defaced. I've cleaned up and my shared wehost is pointing at me saying there shouldn't be any 777 permissions for any files in there.
I used 777 to allow php to add records in a txt file and in an xml file.
Is there a better / more secure chmod code I can use?
Those are the only two instances where I need php to write to a file and those files shouldn't be served to anyone, I do not want anyone to be able to access them.
How can I secure them while letting php write in them?
switched to ipower.com and not getting any help - really stuck as my customer wanted better spam filtering so I went to them on a recommendation and I do not know how to turn on and what is the best setting for spam filtering with their panel. Also using HORDE where I can set a filter using rules but it only works if I log on and hit apply filter so my customer still gets it in his in box -
View 2 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone know if they have power limits? Ie if I pay for 4u of space, can I throw in a dual xeon system with 16 drives and have them not complain? I'll call them monday, but in the meantime I am just curious if anyone is doing something similar. I don't see anything about power limits on the site.

View 8 Replies View RelatedThis will be an ongoing review on my experience with Colo4. I will update it as time goes on. Our experience comes from having rented servers for the past few years and wanting more server and more control, at less cost. Going colo made a lot of sense to us, so we finally took the plunge.
We first approached C4D six weeks ago after reading the reviews posted here. The initial phone call with Patrick Chapa was pleasant, but brief. I really just wanted to get down pricing and learn a little bit more about the facility.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. We were ready to make the server purchase, so it was time to nail down all the details regarding the contract. Gave Patrick a call back.
He was very straightforward, which I very much appreciate. He listened to what we needed, and made suggestions based on that, without trying to push anything onto us we didn't need. In the end, we still came in $500 less than our monthly budget (Patrick knew our budget all along, and I have to think he could have charged us more based on this knowledge, but didn't). We ended up going with a full rack, 2x 20a power drops, 10Mbps premium, 20Mbps value. C4D also provided two remote access APC PDU's and a 2960G switch with a hot backup.
Contract was signed and immediately a ticket was setup in their support area asking all kinds of initial setup questions. We also went on and placed the order with Dell for the servers (Friday afternoon at 3pm EST) and to our suprise, all servers arrived at C4D on Tuesday afternoon around 2pm EST. The switch C4D was providing arrived a few hours later. By 10pm EST the switch was setup, as were the pdu's, servers and their individual drac's.
The two support people I've dealt with so far have been Marc U. and Ricky V. (won't post their last names in case they don't want them posted). They have both been very helpful, even answering a couple of pretty silly questions on my part.
I put in a new ticket this morning and it was answered within 8 minutes by Ricky, with a promised resolution time of 1.5 hours (there's no real rush on this particular issue).
I'd give Patrick a score of 10 (1-10 scale). He was a true pleasure to work with. I'd also give post-sales support (so far) a 10.
The only thing I wish C4D had -- and I know I am certainly in the minority here -- is an MCSE or MCSA on-site, or at least a list of references to local providers that have been approved by C4D. In our business (vacation rentals), we have many homeowners who are out of town and have no idea which local vendors they can trust. We provide a pre-screened list of vendors for them and it is something they greatly appreciate.
So far, no regrets at all going from renting servers to colo, and no regrets going with C4D.
I know C4D is a very good provider already. Searching about Zogmo, it seems no bad reviews at all. Houston or Dallas? Which one do you recommend? Going with Zogmo will save more money, especially with their current promotion
View 12 Replies View Relatedif someone can suggest a colocation company with better support than Colo4Dallas. I have been with them for a few years now. Our server was down all last night. The only way to report that is through their web-based ticketing system.
If tickets could be created with an email, I can trigger an email if my monitoring company reports that server is down but they don't allow that. I also had a bad experience with firewall support they provided. My server was down for two days because they did not do any tests after making changes. They did apologize for screwing it but that's about it.
Is this to be expected from COLO companies. Am I expecting too much from a Colo company? Are there colo companies in DFW Metroplex that have better support?
I want the absolute best quality possible, Im open to other providers also
ips and about 5-10 servers tower based
1-5mbps
I honestly cant decide Ive used both of the above and am torn between this
Is there anyone here using Cogent network at Colo4Dallas? I have a request for file transfer hosting, dont need premium network.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI just got a notice from Leslie at Colo4Dallas that they are raising their rates by 20% effective June, 2007. Did anyone else get this notice yet today? And in order to get the lower price (20% increase), I will have to sign a 12 month contract. So for example, my 1/2 rack will go from $399 to $478, or if I choose to stay month to month, the new rate will be $600.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a Sonicwall NSA 3500. Does anyone know if you can use it to create bandwidth charts of Network Objects (e.g. IPs or Groups of IPs)?
I am thinking something like Cacti, but I don't know the code to pull that info or if it's even technically possible.
which case is more preferred: a shared web hosting service with unlimited space/bandwidth, or a dedicated one with limited space/bandwidth?

View 7 Replies View RelatedHow will I assign the bandwidth for a VE in virtuozzo power panel. I could not find any fileds that corresponds to bandwidth in the steps during creation. I could find how to restrict memory(vmguarpages) and disk space. But where will I assign the bandwidth that a VE can use.
Also what is this bandwidth rate 8kb/s or so?
Now I keep very close tabs on my site stats. Just tonight one of my sites suddenly showed 167gb for "traffic not viewed".
That was a jump from 5gb over the course of a day.
That was done in 604877 pages and 607138 hits.
Can someone explain to me what "traffic not viewed" actually is within AWSTATS.
Next I located where most of the bw went and it appears to be http code 206 showing 159gb. My latest visitor report for the addon domain only showed one ip with an odd couple direct requests. The referring site was my own cpanel but registered to a ip in India.
How can i locate where the leak is, latest visitors isn't being much help, I have since denied the india ip which i suspect was the problem maker. How can I prevent instances such as this in the future? Being a streaming video site I have the bw to spare but it is still a bit un-nerving.
Now on top of everything Virtuozzo isn't showing anything of the sort, what do i believe?
I like the LSN server company and have a server there that I plan to keep forever, they do a great job just that I am confused about their bandwidth. Also the prices aren’t exact!
Just wondering what everyone else here thinks about this:
So... LSN are doing a Q9300 server at the moment for $130 “ish” with 2TB of bandwidth. Now let’s say someone wants an extra 0.5TB of bandwidth they pay around $50 for it and if they want 1TB they pay about $95.
So you buy a server for $130 and get 2TB of bandwidth and also the costs of the hardware, space, power is covered for the hardware. Yet they charge nearly the same price for 1TB extra to a single server, which uses no extra space, hardware or power. Another thing is they charge $25 server to pool the bandwidth between your servers.
So what I see:
2 Servers 4TB B/W @ $260 + $50 (pooling charge) = $310
1 Server 3TB B/W @ $230
1 Server 4TB B/W @ $300
So as you can see from the above you can get twice the space, RAM, CPU and Power for only $10 more? Surely it costs them more than the $10?
Also my final point is LSN have a private network, that is not bandwidth monitored and your servers can use, I asked LSN if you could tunnel the traffic from one server to another, their answer was “yes if you have the technical knowledge to do so”... Well that would get rid of the $50 pooling costs... making it actually alot cheaper to get two servers.
I'm looking to get a VPS offshore (please look at my other threads/posts to learn why) primarily for email for 4 or 5 domain names (most of which I'd download to my desktop but would also backup on the server) as well as perhaps to run a virtual desktop through and/or store some data.
For ease of use (for ME at least), I'd install (or have installed) a CP and probably run Centos 5 or Debian as the OS on the VPS. I won't be running websites from the VPS and I'll be the only user.
I've seen offers of all types related to bandwidth but, in some countries, bandwidth is expensive and they offer little as a result. How do I determine how much bandwidth I need for what I want to do and how do I know what's too little?
I have a server with a 10Mbps connection. Is there a way to limit the connection of my VPSs?
Lets say I have 10 VPS on that server, is there a way to limit them to 1Mbps each? Or do something like:
VPS_01 = 0.5Mbps
VPS_02 = 0.5Mbps
VPS_03 = 0.5Mbps
VPS_04 = 0.5Mbps
VPS_05 = 1Mbps
VPS_06 = 1Mbps
VPS_07 = 1Mbps
VPS_08 = 1Mbps
VPS_09 = 2Mbps
VPS_10 = 2Mbps
And/Or is there a way to monitor the data transfer of each VPS (how many GB/month)?
I've found a colocation company that gives me as the default 1.544Mbps as the initial bandwidth. I think this is OK for me most of the time, the problem is their bandwidth isn't really 'burstable', and If I want to expand to more bandwidth, my options are something like buying another T1's worth muxed in for $250.
Is this strange? Old-fashioned? Should I be worried about this?
i'm not familiar with colo. help this noob out.

what is tis error?:
my monthly bandwidth ussage and Partial Content 206 erros is same. what does it mean?
Is it better to pay for 95th percentile or (what ever that is) is it better to pay per GB used.
I pay per 100GB used and I can upgrade it at anytime during the month which makes it very easy to manage but I would like to more about the differences here.
My issue is and not really that big of one but when I have paid for 400GB and then on the last day of the month I go to 410GB and have to buy 100GB more so I do not get charged overages. I end up with 90GB left unused which someone is banking my cash on.
Besides that I think this really works well for me.
Which way do most co-lo users pay?
Hello all, I run a popular Canadian site called CKA at www.canadaka.net
I am trying to improve the performance of the site and I am looking at getter another server to offload many of the other smaller sites I also host on my main Dual Xeon rackserver. At the same time I am looking for a new Colocation host, because I feel im paying way too much at my current host.
But something I am confused about is how much bandwidth I need. I am not talking about bandwidth in the data transfer sense, but in the connection speed.
Many hosts have options/packages ranging from 1Mbps to 100Mbps. Many packages with 1,3,5,10Mbps are "unmetered" where are 100Mbps is usualy metered. I'm not sure what speed I need for my site so that there is no bottleneck at peak times. Because the price difference changes a lot between these options, so if a 10Mbps won't have any noticable difference over a 3Mbps, why pay more?
I'm not really that imformed on all this, but i have MRTG setup on my server here: [url]
so someone more knoledable than me might be able to better acess what I need?
As far as data transfer, the server uses between 300GB - 500GB a month.
