X264 Video Conversion Cluster- (To Reduce Encoding Time)
Oct 31, 2008
I would like to know if there's any way we could reduce "conversion times" for videos while converting them with "mencoder" and "x264 codec"?
Is it possible to cluster 2-3 or more servers (Quad core/8GB RAM) so that I can reduce the conversion timings effectively?
The original video sizes are around 500-700MB on an average and I'd like to convert them using mencoder in x264 codec @ 500Kbps bitrate and 2pass settings.
Ofcourse it'll take atleast 1-2hours to encode 1 such video at these settings on a 'single' such server, so is there a way to reduce the conversion times to around 10-15minutes/video by using "parallel encoding" with x264 codec?P.S: I know how to form a cluster, using beowulf/rocks, etc...what I need help with is 'using' the cluster with x264 codec

Nirvanix offers "Image manipulation such as image resizing, thumbnail generation, and rotating, video frame extraction, video conversion to Flash video". Is there any competitor? I guess building one on top of S3/EC2/SQS from Amazon would be a no brainer.

I have a video site (just embedding) that is pretty small right now. I do not need a dedicated server just yet.
I am currently using westhost and they do not support the typical suite of video software needed to convert videos to flvs. I would like to know if there are any reliable hosts with good support that offer installation of the following software on a shared vps:

Prior to installing FFmpeg and its dependencies, I want to know about FFmpeg server-side conversion without the php script. Does it require those php scripts in the first place or I can just run an ssh command?
Also, does this FFmpeg have a configuration file in which you can set the quality of the converted .fla videos?
How about a lossless quality conversion and keeping the size proportion of the video the same?
Meaning, for example, from .avi to .fla without sacrificing/loosing the quality much or noticeably.

We've come to a crossroad with our site and not sure where to take it from here. It would seem like a cluster option would be the best bet, but wanted to ask the professionals first to see if there were any other way to solve it.
The problem is (as usual) too high load making the servers slow. Actually, only the apache server. We recently seperated mySQL and apache on two servers to help out with the load. The mySQL server load is around 0.25-0.5 throughout the day, but the apache server load is almost always at 6.xx-10.xx.
Both servers has the following stats:
CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q6600-S3 (Quad Core @ 2.4GHz)
RAM: 8GB DDR2
HDD: 750gb SATA2
Average Daily Stats:
Uniques: 60 000
Pages: 1 300 000
Hits: 14 700 000
BW: 95 GB
Concurrent users on vBulletin forums 250-700.
* Shouldn't an apache server with these stats be capable to handle the current visits?
* Could this perhaps be solved if we swapped the sata drive with a scsi/sas?
If we're moving to a cluster solution, we'd be looking at minimum 5 servers.
2x Load balancing servers
1x SQL server
2x Apache servers
Preferably we should have 2 SQL servers for redudancy, but for a site that is hobby based, it would be insane to pay around $1245-1490 a month just to keep it up.
Key stats from httpd.conf
Code:
ServerType standalone
KeepAlive Off
MaxKeepAliveRequests 100
KeepAliveTimeout 1
MinSpareServers 15
MaxSpareServers 20
StartServers 15
MaxClients 275
MaxRequestsPerChild 1000
I have root access if anyone needs more info.

I have ffmpeg installed on a webserver. If I enter the command to begin a conversion process, or the command is sent through PHP via exec(), it keeps going until it finishes or runs into an error.
Is there a way to cancel a conversion process after it's been started either through the command line or via PHP exec()?

how to translate this into what would be needed in port speed to cover this server if converted to colo, in Mbps ? Is it 4.5?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The statistics were last updated Wednesday, 14 February 2007 at 10:50,
at which time 'XXXXXXXXX' had been up for 362 days, 17:47:15.
Last 30 days usage (Metered 95%): 4670.57 kb/sec
Last 30 days usage (Metered 95%): 1477797.53 MBytes
Total Utilization ( Last 30 days ): [In 637187 MBytes] [Out 65140 MBytes]
Max Speed: 12.5 MBytes/s
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, is there a real need to be on a burstable connection, or are flat rates OK most of the time? Just looking for the advantages and disadvantages of it.

I want to do a "near-lossless" video conversion, if that is even possible, in keeping the proportion of the original video. Veoh seems a little bit better / at a higher quality than youtube, and I want to achieve higher quality than that. Literally speaking, I want the converted flv video's quality to be as close as the original video. What ffmpeg command exactly do I need to achieve this? I currently use ClipShare and is experimenting with Ostube for the php script. The default "high-quality" setting for both scripts are not that good of a quality either, with choppy images.

I administrate a server with IIS 6 on it running Windows 2003 server. The problem is the person is does the webpages uploads webpages onto the server and when viewing them in the browser you see weird characters. The default encoding used is ISO, so when I change it to UTF-8 the characters go away and it looks normal. Now I know I can have him go into each page and add a meta tag to tell it to use UTF-8 but he has thousands of pages.

I've seen this header being sent by a small number of visitors. I suppose it's due to some personal antivirus or firewall, as Norton Internet Security strikes out the Accept-Encoding header too (in a different fashion though - it asterisks them out).

We been working on building a Japanese site for some time now. We finally finished off and are in the testing stage. Through out the development of the site we've been having trouble with way that Japanese characters display in our auto emails. The problem is, neither us nor programming we team work with are Japanese. And there is very little to no information about this in English.
We've had issues where.
garbled text show up in one or two fields of an email (title/subject/body) but displays fine in others.
garbled text show up in one email account type (yahoo) and not in another (gmail).
Recently one point which really puzzled us, is that we have some auto emails (specific emails from our system to our users relating to topic) that show up fine in all email account types. Yet some emails generated for the same system with basically the same mix of character types have errors. Could this be and error on our part in the incorrect implementation of a coding method that has worked before?
We are using UTF-8 character set now.

Last year my web host stated that my site was over utilizing allowed resources for my plan. Specifically, they state that I was overusing the CPU. At the time, I had to upgrade my plan in order to stay online. I would like to move to a new host, but the prospective hosts are all suggesting a dedicated server because of my CPU usage. I don't want to pay that kind of money, so I would really like to curb the CPU problem. Does anyone know how to reduce the CPU of a Wordpress blog? I tried posting this question over at Wordpress.org, but I haven't received a single reply.

Since updating to plesk 12, we haven't been able to back up the server; even tough sites are backed up individually - apparently backups are ok, haven't had the need to try them.
The troubling domain is a huge joomla site which was backed up w/o trouble through previous versions of plesk 9, 10 and 11.
This is the error message at the server's backup admin:

How to reduce downtime - multiple name servers ?
Say I have two different hosting accounts at two different web hosts. One at host1.com and another at host2.com. In both the hosts I keep the same files. I use an external registrar and use the name servers for one of my domains as follows:
ns1.host1.com
ns1.host2.com
ns2.host1.com
ns2.host2.com
What would happen in that case, if say host1 is down sometime? Will the name servers point to host2.com?
If this could work, then the probability of downtime of a site would become almost 0 .
Google will like this ?
Another question is how to easily sincronize both cpanel accounts?

Few months ago I bought new small VPS box (OpenVZ, 128 MB RAM) in order to place there a new monitoring node of my site monitoring system. Such small amount of RAM is a challenge for operating system optimisation techniques (OpenVZ doesn’t have “swap” as Xen does).
First of all I discovered that apache2-mpm-worker (Apache implementation that uses threads) consumes more memory (100MB) than the classic version that use separate processes (20MB). I had to switch to apache2-mpm-prefork version then.
Next unpleasant suprise: small Python app eats 100MB of virtual memory! I checked that virtual (not resident) memory is taken into account by VPS. I applied some tools to locate memory bottleneck, but without success. Next I added logs with current memory usage to track call that causes big memory consumption. I tracked the following line:
server = WSGIServer(app)
is guilty for high memory increase. After few minutes of googling I located problem: default stack size for a thread. Details:This line creates few threads to handle concurrent calls
Stack size is counted towards virtual memory
Default stack size is very high on Linux (8MB)
Every thread uses separate stack
=> multi threaded application will use at least number_of_threads * 8MB virtual memory!
First solution: use limits.conf file. I altered /etc/security/limits.conf file and changed default stack size. But I couldn’t make this change to alter Python scripts called from Apache (any suggestions why?).
Second (working) solution: lower default stack size using ulimit. For processes launched from Apache I altered /etc/init.d/apache2 script and added:
ulimit -s 256
Now every thread (in apache / Python application) will use only 128 kB of virtual memory (I lowered VSZ from 70 MB to 17 MB this way). Now I have additional space to enlarge MySQL buffers to make DB operations faster.
There’s even better place to inject ulimit system-wide: you can insert this call in:
/etc/init.d/rc
script. Then ulimit will be applied to all daemons (as Apache) and all login sessions. I reduced virtual memory usage by 50% this way.
Note: you may increase stack size on stack overflow errors. In my opinion 256 kb is safe option for most systems, you may increase if in doubt. Still memory savings are big.

how do i tweak apache settings and what settings do i make to avoid this ?
im wondering what will happen after few months when my websites actually have good traffic coming in ?
We have checked your server. Please see the load average and process list given below:
The value 4.42 was the CPU load average at the time. A normal load should be below 1.00. I could see that Apache service is causing high load in your server.
So you can tweak Apache in order to reduce the CPU load. Please check and let us know if you need any further assistance.
