View 14 RepliesI am looking to get hosting for site that I want to build. At the moment I am looking for shared hosting. Things that I need from the host are unlimited MySQL databases, Unlimited Domains/Sub-Domains, 5GB Disk Space and 10 GB Data transfer. My budget is about $10/month. I know hostgator provides 1 month for 1cent after coupon. I know hostgator oversells but their plans meet my requirements and from what I have read here they aren't too bad. Are there any other hosts that provide the first month for free or close to free, I would like to try out the hosting service for a month to see for myself how they are.

I checked out cpanel.net and they have a "Rent or Buy licenses" and also "Purchase license" link. Those seem expensive. But how do the rest in the industry charge only $10 or even $5 for a cPanel install for dedicated server customers?
Does anyone know a webhost that permits potential customers the opportunity to test their VPS? I'm most concerned about the interface to the VPS -- will I have ssh/scp access to the VPS? Most VPS hosts seem to use other non-standard (ie. not ssh or scp) protocols for administering a VPS. I'm not sure if I would like them.

View 10 Replies View RelatedEvery web hosting company I've seen has a certain amount of monthly bandwidth for a dedicated server. For example, one hosting company offers a dedicated server with 10TB of bandwidth per month.
Question is, why don't web hosting companies offer 2 monthly bandwidth options like International and Local? Local bandwidth costs alot less than International bandwidth.
So for example, a web host based in the USA should have a Dedicated server with 10TB Local monthly bandwidth and 10TB International monthly bandwidth.
Can't hosting companies detect where the dedicated server is being accessed from?
Does anyone have any recommendations for a dedicated server host? I'm looking for a dedicated server with a Xeon Harpertown quad core with a 15K SA-SCSI hard drive.

As owner of a hosting provider company, I face the problem of abusive users almost every day. More than 90% of all abuse on my server comes from free trial accounts. I offer free trial access to my servers for people who want to try things out before they purchase a hosting package, but off course this attracts spammers. To prevent trial users from using my server for spamming purposes, I modified my exim.pl file to prevent trial users from accessing the Exim mail server.
Please note that this tutorial has been written for cPanel servers. If you want to use it on a server with a different control panel, you'll need to modify the cpgetpack.c source. If you do so, please share your work with the community by posting it in a reply here.
STEP ONE
First you’ll need to download, compile and install my cpgetpack.c application. Here’s how:
Code:
gcc cpgetpack.c -o cpgetpack
mv cpgetpack /usr/bin/
chown cpanel:cpanel /usr/bin/cpgetpack
chmod +s /usr/bin/cpgetpack
STEP TWO
Now open the /etc/exim.pl file in your favorite text editor (make a backup first) and look for the following inside the checkuserpass subroutine:
Code:
$trueowner =~ s////g;
$trueowner =~ s/..//g;
if (isdemo(${trueowner})) {
return('no');
}
Below, paste the following code:
Code:
my $name = getpwuid($uid);
open(UP, "cpgetpack $name|");
my $userplan = <UP>;
close(UP);chop($userplan);
if ($userplan eq "radix_FreeTrial") {
return "no";
}
You will have to replace the radix_FreeTrial string with the package you assign to your trial users. This will prevent trial users from authenticating which prevents them from sending mail remotely.
STEP THREE
Users are now still able to send mail locally (for example using the PHP mail() function), so here’s what to do next.
Find the checkdemo subroutine in the exim.pl file and replace the complete subroutine with:
Code:
sub democheck {
my $uid = Exim::expand_string('$originator_uid');
if (isdemo($uid)) { return 'yes'; }
my $name = getpwuid($uid);
open(UP, "cpgetpack $name|");
my $userplan = <UP>;
close(UP);
chop($userplan);
if ($userplan eq "radix_FreeTrial") {
return 'yes';
}
return 'no';
}
STEP FOUR
Now just restart Exim:
Code:
service exim restart
It might be a good idea to create a trial account and see if it’s working. Enjoy!

I've gone through a few shared web hosts, and they don't meet the needs for a new project I'm working on. I was hoping someone could perhaps recommend me a good reliable US based web host with the following requirements:
- Dedicated
- 80GB storage (minimum)
- 1024MB RAM (minimum)
- Reasonable bandwidth
I'm wondering how much importance I should place on the CPU, as the website is relatively low traffic, but serves large files. The model itself isn't too far different from something like 'yousendit.com', but not open to the public.
I need traffic. Small Server. Let me know what you think.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have quite the story to tell. I have been denied service by three hosts within the past week for no particular reason.
I have been conducting business for over three years and have a US-registered legitimate business to run, and am in need of two dedicated servers of my specifications in multiserver configuration to meet my needs.
At all three of these hosts, I have chatted over live chat with the salesman getting me excited to venture with them, only to be let down and rejected service - as their own right, to refuse anyone for their service.
The first company was HiVelocity, the second was WiseDedi, and the third is BuzzServers. All companies had given me false hopes and promises - I actually put in a preorder at Buzz Servers for this upcoming Monday for two servers.
What's going on with this industry, and particularly, this forum? I've never had a problem with hosts in the past, or dedicated server hosting specifically. I'm moving, or looking to move to a new host, because I need a multiserver configuration - my current host could not configure it properly with DirectAdmin, and asked me to find another host to do this, and here I am, going back and forth between companies and getting rejected of service.
My company is not illegal nor does it represent any sort of threat, and has been online and established for years. I also pay on time via some sort of subscription, whether that be PayPal or 2Checkout, or even Google Checkout. I've never had a negative feedback, either.
I don't understand how or why this is happening, because now for the third time I've been denied by three hosts. Each and every have wasted my time by offering me their service and servers at the pricing I can afford ($350/mo), only to tell me later that the manager is denying my service.
What's going on with this industry?
Can anyone actually recommend me a solid, stable, established hosting company?
ALL of the hosts that have rejected me are brand new, unestablished, and incompetent from what I see - they reject my business. Surely I will be there to speak out against them, and for good services, I always write good reviews and testify for them.
Rob at HiVelocity banned me from their live chat support for asking about why my service was denied, and now Richard Anderson of Buzz Servers booted me from chat after I asked why as well with the answer "as a business we have the right to refuse.." - if it's not written on the website, that is not a right I believe as that is discrimination.
You'd think with someone with a good reputation like me, whose been around for years, I'd get a bit more respect than false hopes and promises, when I need a solution...now.
I'm looking for a server with 3-4 TB of disk space and moderate traffic requirements (1.5-2 TB a month will suffice).
CPU, RAM do not really matter.
Location: EU or US.
Price: ~100 USD a month with some setup fee or ~120 USD without.
So far I found OVH's SP Storage (http://www.ovh.co.uk/individual/products/superplan_storage.xml) which offers 4 x 1.5 TB RAID0/1 drives for a total of 3 TB disk space. However I can't register with them and their sales did not react quickly enough yet to help me.
Is there anyone else with similar offerings with whom you have personal experience?
I'm trying to find a script of some kind that determines which domains (from a list on the box) no longer point to the server. I have to believe this exists somewhere, but with searching I'm coming up empty.
Plesk and cPanel are my targets. I could build it myself with some time, but honestly, I'm one of those guys that doesn't like to reinvent the wheel when it's already out there...even if as a paid script.
I need not expensive more dedicated server with configuration:
CPU - (P4 other not specifically)
Memory 2Gb
4 x 1000Gb HDD
Uplink port 100Mbps
Bandwidth 10.000Gb/per month
(~ 20-30 Mbps unmetered)
OS: CentOS (only ssh root)
Did you know good DataCenter fast support/phone.
Good uplink speed / out USA or Europe
Not expensive more than 200-300$
I was in the market for a new dedicated server after a couple of years with my previous provider. The previous provider did nothing wrong but they were no longer competitive when it came to CPU and memory.
I moved first to geekrack. And I left them after a week and a half as they never were able to get my rDNS records setup.
I found Universal Hosts on this forum and gave them a shot. I had asked for an operating system that they didn't offer normally (Debian 64 bit) and they said that they could do it. However, when my server was setup it was 32 bit Debian instead. They apologized and had Debian 64 bit setup less than 24 hours later.
When I asked them to get rDNS records setup it took a few hours but they were setup correctly and they worked.
Universal Hosts is also a BurstNet reseller but compared to my other attempt at using a BurstNet reseller they are fantastic. While the initial config was incorrect they worked quickly to fix it and were very professional about it.
So after two weeks - so far so good. Keep up the good work UniHosts!
I am running Apache2.2, PHP5.I have been running with virtual hosts on a Windows 7 environment fine for a couple of years successfully, but have just had to move to a Windows 8 environment.It looks like Apache and PHP have installed and are working fine, but my Virtual hosts are now not being recognised. From what I can tell, it is the Windows 8 hosts file that is having a problem, as it looks as though it is now just setup to Block websites.
If I make the host file just have the one line127.0.0.1 localhost entry, then the very first Virtual Host from my apache config file will come up, but the rest are not found.If I put the usual 127.0.0.1 mywebsite.name aliasname is appears as though my website works momentarily and then is blocked..
My website suspended by a hosting service provider they told me that I try to send some spamming emails, the details about my website it's very small with 282 users (before suspended) I used phpBB version 2 and send news to users with phpBB send mail function. Frequency of sending is not more than 2 times a month and not every month.
I've already contacted the hosting provider they didn't help anything just say "Hold on" for 1 day a ago.
Offering Ruby on Rails on a regular shared environment server. I can easily install this but the question is, should I install it?
Is it going to use up a lot of server resources?
Should I dedicated one server alone for a Ruby on Rails installation?
Is it worth installing? If you have used ROR in the past, what is your experience
regarding it...does it raise conversion rates?
Recently I stumbled along a host on here with a good rep and that uses direct admin.
Because they were very nice on the live support I signed up to see what direct admin was like.
Its very diferent from cpanel. Some parts seem to be harder to use like the phpmyadmin requires the username and password to the database you created not the control panel username and password like cpanel. Although I guess that could be a good security feature just in case some one gets into the control panel they can not get into the phpmyadmin, then again if they are smart and were able to get into the control panel they could get into ftp and look what the username and password is on the config file for the script you are using.
The bandwidth meter seems to be better in direct admin although I think its acting up for me as its putting yesterdays bandwidth on todays. I was told by the host that it updates every 2 hours and at first it did but now its gone to every day. Oh and unlike cpanel this bandwidth meter includes bandwith used by the control panel.
Niether one from what I can tell counts sftp though at least for the hosts I have right now.
my friend install VMware on his server to run vps, it looks likely interesting, do you use VMware to offer vps?

Hi everyone - I'm looking for a dedicated service provider (US based) that can provide at least 256 IP addresses on a per server basis
I would also like the provider to offer 100mbit and preferably 1Gbit connections. If possible I would like to keep my costs under $200 a month, not sure if that's realistic but ya never know.
Total storage and data transfer limits aren't really an issue.
I found a company server . lu that provides a /64 IPv6 allocation, which is mindblowing - but they're europe based so that won't work.
