Recommendations For UK Dedicated Server

Apr 1, 2009

Anyone got any recommendations of reliable companys to buy a dedicated server from in the UK? Some of the features we are looking for are:

Quad Core Server
4GB Memory
100Mbit/sec dedicated connection (metered or unmetered)
Tech support when/if we have server crashes included in price with at least a phone number or live chat.

We are really looking for the big companies that can offer this and not so much of the new hosting companies.

Dedicated Server Recommendations ..?

Mar 24, 2008

so we were with ipowerweb, man, biggest mistake ever, wasn't my choice, was cheap, did the job for a while. Now we started overloading the box, ok, find an alternative, we found VRT Servers, wow, mistake 2 it would seem, currently we have a P4 w/HT, 1.5gig, 250gig, 2500gig/mo bandwidth and directadmin for 80/mo, can someone recommend someone that will provide something around these specs and actually have semi decent support (11hrs and counting for a reboot request...)

We basically need a 64bit box, with directadmin and fedora (i know technically they arent compatible but they do work after you screw with exim, pretty easy really) and a decent amount of bandwidth and support... i would order a box from FDC in a heartbeat but they are just out of the pricerange for this particular server at this point in time.

Web Hosts Dedicated Server Bandwidth

Jan 16, 2009

Every web hosting company I've seen has a certain amount of monthly bandwidth for a dedicated server. For example, one hosting company offers a dedicated server with 10TB of bandwidth per month.

Question is, why don't web hosting companies offer 2 monthly bandwidth options like International and Local? Local bandwidth costs alot less than International bandwidth.

So for example, a web host based in the USA should have a Dedicated server with 10TB Local monthly bandwidth and 10TB International monthly bandwidth.

Can't hosting companies detect where the dedicated server is being accessed from?

Been Denied By Three Hosts For Dedicated Server Hosting

May 16, 2009

I have quite the story to tell. I have been denied service by three hosts within the past week for no particular reason.

I have been conducting business for over three years and have a US-registered legitimate business to run, and am in need of two dedicated servers of my specifications in multiserver configuration to meet my needs.

At all three of these hosts, I have chatted over live chat with the salesman getting me excited to venture with them, only to be let down and rejected service - as their own right, to refuse anyone for their service.

The first company was HiVelocity, the second was WiseDedi, and the third is BuzzServers. All companies had given me false hopes and promises - I actually put in a preorder at Buzz Servers for this upcoming Monday for two servers.

What's going on with this industry, and particularly, this forum? I've never had a problem with hosts in the past, or dedicated server hosting specifically. I'm moving, or looking to move to a new host, because I need a multiserver configuration - my current host could not configure it properly with DirectAdmin, and asked me to find another host to do this, and here I am, going back and forth between companies and getting rejected of service.

My company is not illegal nor does it represent any sort of threat, and has been online and established for years. I also pay on time via some sort of subscription, whether that be PayPal or 2Checkout, or even Google Checkout. I've never had a negative feedback, either.

I don't understand how or why this is happening, because now for the third time I've been denied by three hosts. Each and every have wasted my time by offering me their service and servers at the pricing I can afford ($350/mo), only to tell me later that the manager is denying my service.

What's going on with this industry?

Can anyone actually recommend me a solid, stable, established hosting company?

ALL of the hosts that have rejected me are brand new, unestablished, and incompetent from what I see - they reject my business. Surely I will be there to speak out against them, and for good services, I always write good reviews and testify for them.

Rob at HiVelocity banned me from their live chat support for asking about why my service was denied, and now Richard Anderson of Buzz Servers booted me from chat after I asked why as well with the answer "as a business we have the right to refuse.." - if it's not written on the website, that is not a right I believe as that is discrimination.

You'd think with someone with a good reputation like me, whose been around for years, I'd get a bit more respect than false hopes and promises, when I need a solution...now.

Script For Dedicated Hosts That Need To See Which Domains No Longer Point To Server

May 27, 2009

I'm trying to find a script of some kind that determines which domains (from a list on the box) no longer point to the server. I have to believe this exists somewhere, but with searching I'm coming up empty.

Plesk and cPanel are my targets. I could build it myself with some time, but honestly, I'm one of those guys that doesn't like to reinvent the wheel when it's already out there...even if as a paid script.

Dedicated Hosting Company Recommendations

Aug 31, 2006

My boss has recently asked me to source a new host for our servers. At the moment we're running 8 Windows boxes but are unhappy with the service we're receiving from our hosting company. We are looking for a managed hosting company, that has offices in the UK and US to look after the servers.

At the moment we haven't nailed down our exact requirements so I'm just really looking for any recommendations you guys might have. I've done a wee bit of Googling and have found a company called Rackspace but I'm ideally looking to contact around 5 companies to see who can offer us the best deal.

Server(s) Recommendations

Apr 16, 2008

We are looking at taking on a higher profile customer. However I am a little off as to what type of setup should we recommend.

I have limited information but this is what I know.

Avg traffic 8 - 12 Million Hits a day. Unique Hits Unknown. Bandwidth Unknown
PHP/MySQL/Flash Movie Heavy.

TV Commercials, so needs to handle spikes without issues or without warning.

Currently what I have which won't help but kind of gives me a benchmark.

I have one customer that is on a Dual CPU Quad Core Xeon 1.6 with 8GBs RAM, a single SATA HD. This client has an avg of 1 Million hits a day, and 2.4 Million SQL calls. The load on this server runs between 0.6 and 1.8. Which tells me there is more head room for growth.

RAID Setup Necessary On Typical Site? | Server Recommendations

Dec 3, 2008

I've taken the scalable approach when it comes to servers for my various sites. With shared servers, I never really worried about backup or even hard drives going down. Same goes for VPS. For some reason, when I moved to dedicated servers, I outfitted them with 74GB SATA drives in a RAID setup. My understanding is that it protects me if one drive happens to fail. I've been lucky and haven't had that problem.

I'm at the point now where I'm looking to upgrade from a VPS paying around $75 per month to a dedicated server. I can stand to be down a day if a hard drive goes, if it means $75 a month in savings. My biggest concern would be suggestions on the best way to protect myself in the event of a catastrophe.

Contacted SoftLayer about possibly adding a second server for me and honoring the price I'm paying on my old server.

Finally, both the old and new site are seeing roughly 3,000 visits per day. The server I'm considering is a Clovertown 5320 1.86 dual quadcore, 4GB RAM, RAID, 2 74GB Cheetah drives,100mbps, 2000GB bandwidth. Is this overkill or the right server for the job?

Universal Hosts (uni-hosts) Two Week Mini Review

Apr 2, 2008

I was in the market for a new dedicated server after a couple of years with my previous provider. The previous provider did nothing wrong but they were no longer competitive when it came to CPU and memory.

I moved first to geekrack. And I left them after a week and a half as they never were able to get my rDNS records setup.

I found Universal Hosts on this forum and gave them a shot. I had asked for an operating system that they didn't offer normally (Debian 64 bit) and they said that they could do it. However, when my server was setup it was 32 bit Debian instead. They apologized and had Debian 64 bit setup less than 24 hours later.

When I asked them to get rDNS records setup it took a few hours but they were setup correctly and they worked.

Universal Hosts is also a BurstNet reseller but compared to my other attempt at using a BurstNet reseller they are fantastic. While the initial config was incorrect they worked quickly to fix it and were very professional about it.

So after two weeks - so far so good. Keep up the good work UniHosts!

Apache :: Virtual Hosts With Windows 8 Hosts File

Aug 11, 2013

I am running Apache2.2, PHP5.I have been running with virtual hosts on a Windows 7 environment fine for a couple of years successfully, but have just had to move to a Windows 8 environment. It looks like Apache and PHP have installed and are working fine, but my Virtual hosts are now not being recognised. From what I can tell, it is the Windows 8 hosts file that is having a problem, as it looks as though it is now just setup to Block websites.

If I make the host file just have the one line127.0.0.1 localhost entry, then the very first Virtual Host from my apache config file will come up, but the rest are not found. If I put the usual 127.0.0.1 mywebsite.name aliasname is appears as though my website works momentarily and then is blocked..

Directadmin Hosts Or Cpanel Hosts

Aug 16, 2008

Recently I stumbled along a host on here with a good rep and that uses direct admin.

Because they were very nice on the live support I signed up to see what direct admin was like.

Its very diferent from cpanel. Some parts seem to be harder to use like the phpmyadmin requires the username and password to the database you created not the control panel username and password like cpanel. Although I guess that could be a good security feature just in case some one gets into the control panel they can not get into the phpmyadmin, then again if they are smart and were able to get into the control panel they could get into ftp and look what the username and password is on the config file for the script you are using.

The bandwidth meter seems to be better in direct admin although I think its acting up for me as its putting yesterdays bandwidth on todays. I was told by the host that it updates every 2 hours and at first it did but now its gone to every day. Oh and unlike cpanel this bandwidth meter includes bandwith used by the control panel.

Niether one from what I can tell counts sftp though at least for the hosts I have right now.

What Domain Name Server (DNS) Changes To Make When Moving Hosts?

Mar 10, 2008

I have example.com as a reseller account hosted on a shared server. I have ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com on that server and client domains use these nameservers.

I want to move to a VPS for more control and so I have acquired vps.example.com. This also has vps_ns1.example.com and vps_ns2.example.com with it.

Can I move everything to the VPS? Assuming that I move the files over, if I simply changed the DNS of example.com to point to nameservers vps_ns1(and 2).example.com, what would happen?

Have I made it over complicated for me to understand, and it's actually a lot easier than I think? Or have I shot myself in the foot by using vps.example.com as the name for the VPS?

I am using cPanel/WHM for both servers.

VPS Recommendations

Jun 17, 2007

Currently I have a websites thats pretty new, about a month or too. Anyway, the site has a forum which is the area most used, and it's quickly growing. The topic of the site is automotive.

Basically I'm looking for decent ram, about 15gb of storage (forum db, pictures, and an occasional video), and 100gb+ of bandwidth. Once things really pick up, I'll just go out and get another server for this site, at the month however I want to stick to a VPS.

So who do you guys recommend? Please don't recommend primaryVPS, as I've been with them for less then a month and my experience has been less then pleasant.

Recommendations For Vps

i run a forum and wiki with an average of 20-30 users 24/7, and up to 60ish at peak hours.

currently, it uses <100gb transfer per month, but it could grow.

i'm looking for a us vps that can run this quickly and smoothly, while staying under 30 usd per month.

users are mostly from the us, although there's a large percentage of eu, asia, and australian users as well.

doesn't matter if it has a control panel or not, as long as it's got lamp and shell access.

what specifications and hosts would you recommend?
