Web Hosts Dedicated Server Bandwidth
Every web hosting company I've seen has a certain amount of monthly bandwidth for a dedicated server. For example, one hosting company offers a dedicated server with 10TB of bandwidth per month.
Question is, why don't web hosting companies offer 2 monthly bandwidth options like International and Local? Local bandwidth costs alot less than International bandwidth.
So for example, a web host based in the USA should have a Dedicated server with 10TB Local monthly bandwidth and 10TB International monthly bandwidth.
Can't hosting companies detect where the dedicated server is being accessed from?

Been Denied By Three Hosts For Dedicated Server Hosting
I have quite the story to tell. I have been denied service by three hosts within the past week for no particular reason. I have been conducting business for over three years and have a US-registered legitimate business to run, and am in need of two dedicated servers of my specifications in multiserver configuration to meet my needs. At all three of these hosts, I have chatted over live chat with the salesman getting me excited to venture with them, only to be let down and rejected service - as their own right, to refuse anyone for their service. The first company was HiVelocity, the second was WiseDedi, and the third is BuzzServers. All companies had given me false hopes and promises - I actually put in a preorder at Buzz Servers for this upcoming Monday for two servers. What's going on with this industry, and particularly, this forum? I've never had a problem with hosts in the past, or dedicated server hosting specifically. I'm moving, or looking to move to a new host, because I need a multiserver configuration - my current host could not configure it properly with DirectAdmin, and asked me to find another host to do this, and here I am, going back and forth between companies and getting rejected of service. My company is not illegal nor does it represent any sort of threat, and has been online and established for years. I also pay on time via some sort of subscription, whether that be PayPal or 2Checkout, or even Google Checkout. I've never had a negative feedback, either. I don't understand how or why this is happening, because now for the third time I've been denied by three hosts. Each and every have wasted my time by offering me their service and servers at the pricing I can afford ($350/mo), only to tell me later that the manager is denying my service. What's going on with this industry? Can anyone actually recommend me a solid, stable, established hosting company? ALL of the hosts that have rejected me are brand new, unestablished, and incompetent from what I see - they reject my business. Surely I will be there to speak out against them, and for good services, I always write good reviews and testify for them. Rob at HiVelocity banned me from their live chat support for asking about why my service was denied, and now Richard Anderson of Buzz Servers booted me from chat after I asked why as well with the answer "as a business we have the right to refuse.." - if it's not written on the website, that is not a right I believe as that is discrimination. You'd think with someone with a good reputation like me, whose been around for years, I'd get a bit more respect than false hopes and promises, when I need a solution...now.

Bandwidth In Dedicated Server
I have recently switched from shared hosting and there I had a strange deviation between cpanel bandwidth and AwStats bandwidth. Unitl I changed to a dedicated box I got about ~180GB in AwStats but Cpanel only reported ~130GB. So now I have whm setup and host my site on one cpanel account. Can I trust the bandwidth reported in that cpanel account or is there a definitive number I can get via other means? I just want to be sure I have an exact figure so I know where I'm at with regards to bandwidth. At the moment I am wondering whether it may be underreported as well?

Dedicated Server With True Unmetered Bandwidth
Looking for a dedicated unmetered server to stream movies and audio for over 500 visitors a day. Anybody knows any place that is good? Also, what kind of hardware specifications would be OK for me - in terms of speed and memory? And would we be OK with a 10mbit port or 100? Would I survive on a dedicated server with a shared bandwidth?

Most Secure Dedicated Web Server Setup
I am seeking a little input from others who use multi-CPU machines with large memory as web servers and mysql servers. I will be more than happy to give additional information I might have overlooked if you need it. Just ask. We are starting to run more and more dedicated hosts running joomla applications. I've been trying to find the very best settings for both performance and security that I can for the servers to function well specifically with their joomla applications. Serves are not used for *anything* else at all. The servers are strictly used to serve up web pages. No need for anything other than what apache/php, joomla requires and a few other things such as ffmpeg, etc. I would like to remove all tools which aren't needed for such a server, leaving a bare minimum server which is less susceptible to hacking. I've never messed with the root account so wonder if I can simply not allow any access as root other than terminal, perhaps not even su by giving another account full root access and of course, while allowing the system to continue to function properly with the many things which must run as root. I would like to do this on all of my public machines which are of course behind firewalls. I also have load balancers and cache devices in front of the web servers but at this time, they are not activated so aren't in the realm of this question. Development is done in a separate environment and the data is pushed to the web server via private network to the web servers. This means no need for shared tools, FTP, or anything else which users would need in a shared environment. The servers are 8-way IBM, running linux and apache, php/APC. Servers have 32GB of memory and I can install up to 64GB. Databases are run on separate machines which are also dedicated only to running mysql databases. Same machines as above. Machines all run multiple network cards bonded as a single IP. So, my questions are; How can I best utilize my hardware to take advantage of their memory capacities. For example, on the web servers, I'd like to find the best settings for httpd.conf which takes advantage of the machines resources. On MySQL servers, I'd like to do the same as the above, taking the best advantage of the hardware/memory. For web serving and for joomla, I seek the very best security settings I can possibly get. I say best because since they aren't used by users, there is no need to have a lot of tools and access to these machines so it should not be a problem to tighten these machines up a great deal. Any input from those who have such experiences would be very welcome as I've been finding no one place for help on this.

Dedicated Server Or Collocation For Web Application
We're a startup company located outside of the US that's deploying a web application that will be used by our clients in New York City and Boston. We're interested in deploying the app on a couple of strong (2XQuadCore with 4GB RAM each) servers. We're running CentOS and our bandwidth requirements are humble (10-100GB a month). Our application is database intensive. We also need 1G Ethernet between both servers, and a VPN SSL connection to the servers. This is our first time hosting in the US, what would be the best way for us to go? 1. Buy our own servers and have them collocated to a data center? 2. Go for dedicated servers? 3. Other suggestions? Other things we should be aware of?

A Review Of Web Hosts
With all the web hosts out there people must be like "Which is best?" Well here is a review of some of the big names out there in web hosting. GoDaddy.com: GoDaddy’s web hosting packages come loaded with features. GoDaddy is proud of their world class data center and physical services, and reasonably so. GoDaddy actually owns their hosting facilities, which feature state of the art security and advanced backup technology for complete and competent network servers. Each GoDaddy hosting plan comes with web site statistic tools to help you keep an eye on how your hosted page is performing. Setup is absolutely free, and includes access to the GoDaddy.com Hosting Connection, where you can interact with other GoDaddy users and find free applications to use on your web site. Each GoDaddy hosting plan also comes with a variety of free software and credits to help you get the word out on your site. The Deluxe plan that we reviewed includes a $25 Google AdWord credit, a $50 Microsoft adCenter credit, and a $50 Facebook credit. GoDaddy provides other tools as well for further adding function to your site. You can host forums on your GoDaddy website, start a blog, and show off your photos. And while GoDaddy doesn’t include a free shopping cart, they do have e-commerce solutions available, including merchant accounts and the Quick Shopping Cart. Customer Service: GoDaddy has a variety of help and support options available, and they’re accessible all of the time. The online support forum and FAQs section are well organized and contain a wealth of knowledge for beginners and advanced users alike. GoDaddy service representatives can also be contacted on the phone, or through email. GoDaddy is a large company with several users, so personal help would be expectedly slower than others. However, GoDaddy’s support team is quick to respond, and the expected response time for emails has significantly decreased since our last review. The 10 to 12 hour response time has been cut down to 1. Control Panel: GoDaddy helps beginners easily set up their site, and includes additional tools for advanced developers to work with. GoDaddy also offers a variety of professional site building services and designs for additional fees. Regardless, all GoDaddy solutions support several programming languages. The deluxe plan we reviewed supports CGI (Python and Ruby), PHP, Perl, ASP, MySQL, ColdFusion, and FrontPage extensions. Most functions within the Account Management tool are similar to other control panels. In addition, with GoDaddy.com you can perform account management tasks, email management, web security, database setup and management, and manage statistic tools. Summary: GoDaddy is a worthy competitor and worthwhile web hosting service. They provide all the essentials and then some, complete with secure facilities. The setup process is straightforward, and GoDaddy has an option for all levels of management, from beginner to expert. Though not as complete as a couple of our other reviewed web hosting services, GoDaddy has what it takes, and is definitely a great option. Article from here HostGator: Hostgator, founded in 2002 is one of top shared hosting companies, ranking consistently among the best by most of the review sites. What makes hostgator stand out from the crowd is their excellent support and customer friendliness. If you are not satisfied with the support, you could even get hostgator president Brent Oxley to personally take a look at your problem. Hostgator offers linux hosting only(even though they are expected to start windows hosting in the near future). All their packages come with all the features needed for a serious website. Baby and Swamp packages allow unlimited domains(add on), which makes a lot of sense if you have multiple websites. They use cPanel, which is the best control panel around. You get Fantastico script installer which will install most of the popular open source scripts with few clicks. They support PHP4 & 5, SSH, Cron jobs, Python, Ruby On Rails etc. Also, all the packages include enough POP3 accounts(20 for Hatchling and unlimited for others). We started realtime testing of hostgator uptime on Feb 2008. The test is done on a site hosted with hostgator, using a third party uptime monitor service. Overall, hostgator had been the best performing host from all the hosts monitored. They provided consistently high uptime, month after month. There has never been a single case of site being down for more than 10 minutes at a stretch. Hostgator indeed lived up to their reputation. They have three hosting packages starting from Hatchling ($6.95 pm) to Swamp ($14.95 pm). The price is reasonable for the features and space/bandwidth provided. Recently Hostgator increased the space and bandwidth to unimaginable levels. They also reduced the price of all plans, by introducing 24 and 34 month pre-payment options. The monthly payment now have a small set up charge and is costlier than 12 month rates. Our advice - don't get excited by the unlimited space and bandwidth. They do have limits on file numbers(inodes) and CPU usage to make sure that only reasonable sized accounts remains in the shared servers. But for any site with a reasonable traffic, hostgator plans are more than sufficient. You obviously can not expect a site with few million page views a month to run on a shared host, no matter what bandwidth they offer.

The current hosting seems to be a bit clunky and we have experienced a bit of down time now and again. One of the main issues is that we currently register au domains with a different company who only let you manage one domain at a time rather than having an account with all your domains in there like the UK. Can anyone recommend a high quality Australian web host that allows you to purchase / manage domains as well?

Web Hosts Being Hacked Using PHP?
Out of the three websites that were hacked the hacker left a get.php file in the root and i decided to see what it was and i ran it. To my shock and horror it gave me all the different types of people hosted on the server and it also gave me their database passwords etc... Now each time i ran it, it gave me different results of different users on the server each time with a long never ending list. I just couldnt believe my eyes a simple short written php script showed me a lot. Now im not a PHP guru but this is quite serious and ive notified my web host showing them my findings. I was quite astonished it showed me passwords in peoples configs. Now my question is... is this something new or old and that my web hosts forgot to look into that area...? I mean its a php script thats all.

Bad Web Hosts Megathread
Just wanted to share this with you all... I run a hosting company of my own, yes, but I choose to host my corporate site elsewhere (for some seemingly obvious reasons). This company is just a group of maybe 4 people that colocates servers to companies all around the world, which basically makes them the middle man. So I'm paying someone more to do half-a**ed work, when I could just pay the same, or maybe more (with better support) to have it done right. Quote: Initially when I signed up a few years ago with [url] their support and uptime was good, not great, but good. Over the years it's gone way downhill. From responses like "idk" instead of I don't know, or just halfway done work, work not done when it was said to be done, major screw ups like accounts being removed, and other issues causing downtime, as well as just a general bad uptime. Surely not 99.9% as promised. The company does not manage their own datacenter. They just colocate a few servers around the world, which just makes them the middle man. So anything that a Noc would need to look at, just takes that much longer. Ticket response time is alright, but a lot of times the issue is not solved on the first ticket, and management either does not respond, doesn't respond for a long time, or doesn't seem to genuinely care. They don't care when you threaten to leave their company and host elsewhere, and when I explained to them how horrible their support, uptime and service is, I got a response from (I think the owner, Nick Hudson) saying "we are canceling your account in 24 hours, I suggest you remove all of your data from our network asap." I guess they don't need customers?

Trusted Web Hosts For A Design / Portfolio Website
I have almost finished designing my site and so I'm looking for a host. However, in looking for hosts I found that a lot of them were scams or were not to be trusted. There were lots of review websites that gave a top 10 listing, and the top 2 always used to be justhost and hostingmonster. Which I didn't really trust as Justhost gave me this silly thing when I tried to leave the page saying 'you can talk to a special agent to get a discount' and all that tosh. So basically, I'm looking for a host that has a fair amount of space, preferably linux OS and preferably in the UK, and it must have MySQL support and be nice cheap one if possible, around £3.00 a month is fine.

2mhost.com - Web Stress Testing To Use Up Bandwidth Quota?
I was just curious as to whether anyone has ever came across a situation where your monthly bandwidth/transfer quota is being consumed at an exponential rate without any increase of traffic to the site? My current situation is this. I have an account 2mhost and a monthly bandwidth transfer quota of 100,000 MB. For the past few months it's been steadily growing. When I first transfered the site to this host their cheapest package quota wasnt sufficient and I ended up with a bandwidth overage error page on my site, so I had to upgrade. In doing so I've always ended the month just shy of 80% total quota. My problem is that it's only the 17th, and a few days ago i was at about 32%, now im at 51% with no increase of pageviews. Looking into awestats shows the alexandria2.2mhost.com using 30 gigs!! I questioned the tech support via live chat and they said it was wordpress accessing the images. So I downloaded the raw access logs and noticed that Every few seconds the server ip would make a request to a dozen or so images, each image being requested 3 times. here's a portion of the log: ....

UK Web Hosting 500MB Space 1GB Bandwidth Existing .org.uk Domain
I'm the webmaster for a church website: stpetersbraunstone.org.uk and our domain & hosting renewal is coming up, so I'm looking to see if there's a better deal. We're with namehog.net (and have been for 2 years with no problems at all) on their Professional package. The renewal fees are 105GBP (web hosting) + 5.90GBP (domain name) + 17.5pc VAT to cover the next 2 years, which comes to 130.31GBP. The site is powered by WordPress, so PHP and MySQL are needed. And we upload lots of photos, so need at least 250MB webspace I'd have thought. So far, our highest monthly bandwidth usage has been under 800Mb, and our visitor numbers are increasing and our highest monthly figure so far was 401. Any recommendations gratefully received. There seems to be many different companies out there who offer what I want, so I'm after some personal recommendations please. I've already used this site to discount streamline.net due to bad reviews. I'm looking at fuzioned.com and redfoxhosting.co.uk - any thoughts? I've also come across no-wires.co.uk - has anyone had any good or bad experiences with them? And yes, I have submitted my details to the "request quote" thing.

Universal Hosts (uni-hosts) Two Week Mini Review
I was in the market for a new dedicated server after a couple of years with my previous provider. The previous provider did nothing wrong but they were no longer competitive when it came to CPU and memory. I moved first to geekrack. And I left them after a week and a half as they never were able to get my rDNS records setup. I found Universal Hosts on this forum and gave them a shot. I had asked for an operating system that they didn't offer normally (Debian 64 bit) and they said that they could do it. However, when my server was setup it was 32 bit Debian instead. They apologized and had Debian 64 bit setup less than 24 hours later. When I asked them to get rDNS records setup it took a few hours but they were setup correctly and they worked. Universal Hosts is also a BurstNet reseller but compared to my other attempt at using a BurstNet reseller they are fantastic. While the initial config was incorrect they worked quickly to fix it and were very professional about it. So after two weeks - so far so good. Keep up the good work UniHosts!
