Hosting Decision Based On Speed
Aug 30, 2008
Well I think that I have finally narrowed down my choices to three different possible hosts (leaving room for more suggestions of course)
But I was wondering based on speed - which host would you suggest. I would like to have mp3s load up and start playing as fast as possible.
The choices I was considering were:
knownhost
downtownhost
hostgator
As for whether to go with a shared or a reseller package, I am still unsure. But it seems that Hostgator offers a huge shared package - I am hoping to keep the cost of all this down to $7 - $10 a month.

I have been doing my homework on windows ASP.NET shared hosting providers and have narrowed down my choice to discountASP & CrystalTech. I am now struggling with making the final decision and would appreciate any thoughts/input/comments/experience that you might have.
My requirements are:
- ASP.NET 2.0
- SQL Server 2005
- SSL Certificate
- Daily backups
- Ability to backup SQL database in real-time
- 20GB Bandwidth
- 100MB Disk Space
- 300MB SQL Disk Space
Site Description: Publish educational material. Users can navigate the site and see articles for free or login and see premium content with subscription. Currently getting 7500 views a day, 1500 visits and 25,000 hits.
Specific items of note:
- discountASP runs apps in isolated application pool, CrystalTech does not
- CrystalTech has phone support, discountASP does not
- CrystalTech is $16.95/month, discountASP is $30/month
- neither provide guaranteed uptime (compared to aspwebhosting.com which does for example - any others that guarantee uptime??)
Will a shared plan with one of these providers be adequate for my needs? If not, any other recommendations?

i found cheapvps.co.uk and they have that special 20% off deal on XEN VPSs. Sounds good to me.
the plans i am debating are the 256mb ram and 384mb ram.
now from my calculations,
the Linux 256mb /10GB/300GB plan is $18 per month. (-15% discount for 1 year = $183.60 - 20% off the discount coupon = $146.88
the Linux 384mb /15GB/600GB plan is $24 per month. (-15% discount for 1 year = $244.80 - 20% off the discount coupon = $195.84
So now the question is: Will the 384mb plan make a difference vs the 256? I will be using XEN.
I have decided to go with the U.K. server since i am currently working in the middle east and found out its hops are much closer and ping better than that of the U.S.
Also, what OS should I choose for easy package installation and such? (dont want apt-get or portage to sit there updating its package system wasting my bandwidth)
Please help decipher the following terminology! All plans include1 Fixed IP with 1 extra IP free with justification (What?)
Burst RAM double that of the guarenteed RAM on Linux (What does this mean? So if i pick 384 guaranteed ram how much burst do i get?)
Free HyperVM or Virtuozzo Power Panel (VZPP) management panel for reboots, reloads and status checking. (Does HyperVM work with XEN or is it for OpenVZ only?)
Unlimited reboots
Unlimited reloads
24×7 Support
DirectAdmin is $10/mo and $15 setup email sales@cheapvps.co.uk to order
cPanel is $15/mo and $15 setup - email sales@cheapvps.co.uk

We've tried before several times RAM based hosting (where you have all files on RAM disk). Our systems were crashing, but my guess is that we were putting about 100,000 or so files on it and since it was formatted with ext3 (everywhere else we are using XFS) - this was a reason for crashing.
Since we have a lot of bandwdith in our data center, we are thinking about becoming a mirror for CentOS, gOS and some other distributions. I am thinking again about using RAM disk based hosting (you use 1 Gb/s port 100% no problem with it even on CoreDuo level of CPU).
Anybody has any experince, good or bad of running RAM based hosting? I am talking about dedicated, not VPS environment.

Just have a question for everyone. Does having a Dedicated IP on your shared service affect your purchase decision?
(i.e., When searching for Shared Web Hosting, do you make it a requirement that you get assigned your own Unique IP or do you not care if you are assigned the Main Box IP.)

I've been investigating and testing Xen for a few months in order to add Xen VPS to the hosting services I have available. With the recent news re: VMware Server, and my experience with VMware, I've started to look, and easily prefer, using this product over Xen. Has anyone else started to look at it as a possible alternative for hosting purposes?

I was going to use reliablesite.net to host my website, but I guess I'll wait and try to find something better.
What I need is a hosting provider that is relatively cheap, windows based (I use .net) and that can handle big amounts of visitors.

I am looking for a host that allow adult content.
it is to be used for a blog, wordpress based with a minimum of space requirements.
EU based is a must have.
currently it is using 25mb + 200mb bw/month.
I need it to be cpanel based and with awstats.
Mysql is not required as it is hosted aldready.
so I am looking for something reliable with a fair amount of space/bw for a small monthly price.
not required but a nice thing to have would be the posibility for more domains on the account.
Eny host you can recommend for this?

my friend and i are working on some web-based-commerce ideas and at current we're at godaddy.com. i can only imagine the vitriol they've rightfully earned here, as we decided to be done with them when the $30 SSL license they told us we could get one night quickly became $78 because there was a new "turboSSL server" package we needed, nevermind the guy the first time said with our hosting options we only needed to go through them for the SSL license, so basically, either the first guy lied to us or the second guy tried to hustle us, either way, i dont like companies whose sales model is revealed like the plot in a horror movie, so we're looking to go elsewhere.
basically we're looking for a virtual private server setup, although actually another question i'd love to ask someone is if joomla is better served on unix/linux or windows, with a few dozen accounts needed, and by accounts i mean domains and whatnot, as right now it's basically the blanket idea that you grab the names you need, or might go to if you change your mind on company names...
so basically, with all the people here talking about bad experiences with places, are there any good experience type places where someone can get competent tech support, no hustling in sales pitches, and quality service at a nice solid price?
again, sorry to show up and start asking for things, but i'm not necessarily well versed in these arts yet... rest assured once i have some information i shall contribute to the community and help others who are in my position now

I am having some serious speed issues with my 1Gbit server at FDC. After opening a ticket, they've simply dismissed it as a server configuration problem. However I am convinced it isn't because certain ISP's (usually universities) get good speeds, usually 700kb/sec but the vast majority of my users get between 20-50 kb/sec and it's causing a lot of complaints.
Furthermore I have other servers with FDC which are 100mbit which perform better than my 1 Gbit one. There are no server bottlenecks (CPU/RAM/HDD), since I've closely monitored them (PRTG) and they aren't even heavily utilised. So the problem is with the network at some point.

where abouts you are downloading from, your ISP and net connection. Wget's from servers are also welcome as are traceroutes.

Can anyone of you guys recommend a web based FTP that will allow me to upload folders ---instead of single files.
For the people using it, File Vista was the most logical choice. I was playing around with their demo, but it does not do folder uploads.
Does such a beast exist?

I'm looking for a cheap VPS with the following requirements:
- Based in the EU
- Unlimited monthly bandwidth
- Price under 50 EUR / month, the cheaper the better
- At least 20GB space, at least 10 MBit, other specs do not matter
- Linux distro or FreeBSD, SSH access
- Good reliability, doesn't mean i want a 99% uptime guarantee, but something that doesn't have too many problems
Preferred locations are near Austria, but anywhere in the EU is good. Also it is a plus if they have upgrade options to better packages if i need it at a later time.
I liked Kimsufi, however I cannot rent from my country even though I can pay by credit card or paypal. I am based in Slovenia and i can pay by Visa debit or Paypal (Visa preferred).

Just a general question here but does it put you off signing up with a host if their HQ's are not based in the US or UK?
For example, would you always choose a host based in the US or UK over a host based in India, China or the Phillippines (i.e. English not being their first language as per communication with techs/sales staff)?
