Out Of Country Based Dedicated Web Hosting

Feb 5, 2007

I have a personal web site and am developing an online business that I hope will grow(of course) and am wondering if anyone could give me advice about using an overseas web host.

I am wondering if the extra distance bewteen customer and web host will cause a significant lagtime when they are using my website.

How Important Is The Country The Host Is Based? Host Overseas?

May 21, 2009

I'm wondering if you can tell me something about your experience with a host/server in a different country or overseas.

My webpage will be mostly frequented by Australians.

What do you think is the advantage and the disadvantage of having a host in your own country and having one overseas?

I'm thinking about stability, traffic speed, peak hours in different time zones, customer service, ....

What are your experiences?

Why Country Specific Hosting Is Important For Marketing

Jul 3, 2009

Something not many people know when choosing a web host is the importance of choosing a host that will aid your marketing and your websiteís niche. This can be very important if you are running an online store depending on the geographic region you are focusing on. So first letís start with an explanation of why this all depends on who your siteís visitors will be.

Most internet connections are very fast but it still matters where the physical server is hosted in terms of speed. If I was starting an online store focusing on customers in Texas the site is going to server faster to people from Texas if it is in Texas. Similarly if you are building a site aimed at United Kingdom residents you donít want the server to be in the United States or even Europe in some cases. By hosting in a location near your customer base you are speeding up their access time to the server. This might not seem like a big deal but in a number of studies the importance of a quick loading page can mean a big difference in the number of conversions. Or if you are hosting a game server ping time will obviously matter when you are shooting your next zombie.

In terms of marketing it is also important in the eyes of Google and other search engines. One of the many factors for knowing whether they should rank you in a country specific search engine is dependent on your IPís location as well as your domain name ending. By using a host in the country your site is serving you is sending one more indication to Google of where you should be ranked.

We have had plenty of customers at UK2 who came to us from USA based hosting and after they started using our servers which are in the United Kingdom they found that conversions increased and they had lower shopping cart abandonment rates. Which when you are running an online store are two very key factors. This is also why we offer our customers dedicated server hosting in both the United Kingdom and USA, we want to be able to give them the best of both worlds.

UK Based Dedicated Server Providers

Dec 5, 2008

The reason for this post is some slight unhappiness with my current US-based server provider. In the last sixth months, they've upped their prices over 30%, turned my server off for 6 and 24 hours by accident on two separate respective occasions (then tried to cover it up), before finally giving me some less than brilliant customer service.

That, combined with the fact that the pound is rapidly weakening against the US dollar has led to me paying for an overly expensive server, and also leaves to me wanting to move to a different and UK-based provider.

Now, I don't need (nor can afford) a massively powerful server - the one I'm currently on is fairly basic (single core Athlon, 512mb RAM, 10mbit and a fair whack of bandwidth) - but I do need the control it provides. A VPS providing a similar amount of processing power could be considered, but obviously on the guarantee that the provider isn't overselling etc. I'd like the server to come with DirectAdmin, to simplify migration a bit.

It's also important that the UK-based provider actually has their servers in the UK, rather than just being registered in the UK - the former would still leave me rather vulnerable to exchange rate fluctuation.

Does anyone have any suggestions: either to swing me one way in the dedi/vps decision, or for some decent providers?

Urgent Need Relaible UK Based Windows Dedicated Server

May 18, 2008

I usually host just PHP but a new client needs to use ASP and SQL Server. So I urgently need to find a UK based reliable Windows Managed Dedicated Server for around £100 to £150 per month.

The site only gets 1000 visits per week and runs a multi community from a 500MB SQL Server database.

I'm scared to go with a cheap host like 1&1 or Fasthosts but also think Rackspace may be way too expensive.

Is a dedicated server overkill for such a site?

Anyone know of a solid relaible host that can offer this with great 24/7 skilled support and daily backups.

I need to have a solution for client by Tuesday or they may go elsewhere.

RAM Based Hosting

Apr 22, 2009

We've tried before several times RAM based hosting (where you have all files on RAM disk). Our systems were crashing, but my guess is that we were putting about 100,000 or so files on it and since it was formatted with ext3 (everywhere else we are using XFS) - this was a reason for crashing.

Since we have a lot of bandwdith in our data center, we are thinking about becoming a mirror for CentOS, gOS and some other distributions. I am thinking again about using RAM disk based hosting (you use 1 Gb/s port 100% no problem with it even on CoreDuo level of CPU).

Anybody has any experince, good or bad of running RAM based hosting? I am talking about dedicated, not VPS environment.

Hosting Decision Based On Speed

Aug 30, 2008

Well I think that I have finally narrowed down my choices to three different possible hosts (leaving room for more suggestions of course)

But I was wondering based on speed - which host would you suggest. I would like to have mp3s load up and start playing as fast as possible.

The choices I was considering were:

knownhost
downtownhost
hostgator

As for whether to go with a shared or a reseller package, I am still unsure. But it seems that Hostgator offers a huge shared package - I am hoping to keep the cost of all this down to $7 - $10 a month.

Good Hosting Site For A Joomla Based Environment?

Jun 3, 2008

my friend and i are working on some web-based-commerce ideas and at current we're at godaddy.com. i can only imagine the vitriol they've rightfully earned here, as we decided to be done with them when the $30 SSL license they told us we could get one night quickly became $78 because there was a new "turboSSL server" package we needed, nevermind the guy the first time said with our hosting options we only needed to go through them for the SSL license, so basically, either the first guy lied to us or the second guy tried to hustle us, either way, i dont like companies whose sales model is revealed like the plot in a horror movie, so we're looking to go elsewhere.

basically we're looking for a virtual private server setup, although actually another question i'd love to ask someone is if joomla is better served on unix/linux or windows, with a few dozen accounts needed, and by accounts i mean domains and whatnot, as right now it's basically the blanket idea that you grab the names you need, or might go to if you change your mind on company names...

so basically, with all the people here talking about bad experiences with places, are there any good experience type places where someone can get competent tech support, no hustling in sales pitches, and quality service at a nice solid price?

again, sorry to show up and start asking for things, but i'm not necessarily well versed in these arts yet... rest assured once i have some information i shall contribute to the community and help others who are in my position now

Australian Based Virtual Private Server (VPS) Hosting Options?

Oct 30, 2007

have a number of vps servers with USA based VPS hosts, very happy with these companies but as they are USA based load time could be improved with AU based server. Also search engine considerations as well fictate we need to offer AU based hsoting. So now looking to setup future accounts a little closer to home with australian based vps hosting

Does anyone know of a really good, fast, reliable affordable vps host offering cpanel/whm vps hosting in a top notch australian data centre.

hoping to pay arounf $100 per month, with room to grow when we have more clients on the server...

This is the average package we are on with us based hosts so looking for something as close as possible to this...

$89 Monthly
$0 Setup
2 GB Burst RAM
512 MB Guaranteed RAM

Time For A Dedicated? And Opinions On Future Hosting Dedicated Servers?

Mar 26, 2009

Some information about my forum:

I run a VBulletin forum with - 575,614 post, 14,369 members and 2.9 million page views per month. On average there are 300 - 400 people on the site.

The server right now is a Linux CentOS VPS with 1.1 gigs of memory. The hosting provider keeps telling me that I need a dedicated server.

Question # 1 - In your opinion - do you think its time for a dedicated server?

The server I am looking at has these stats:

E8300
2 GB RAM
250GB HD
cPanel
Management

The price I was given is pretty good. So the offer is going to be hard to pass up.

Question # 2 - Has anyone here used Future Hosting for their dedicated server solution?
