Poll: Does Having A Dedicated IP On Your Shared Service Affect Your Purchase Decision
Aug 27, 2008
Just have a question for everyone. Does having a Dedicated IP on your shared service affect your purchase decision?
(i.e., When searching for Shared Web Hosting, do you make it a requirement that you get assigned your own Unique IP or do you not care if you are assigned the Main Box IP.)

While dedicated server providers are quick to promote that they support the server hardware how proactive do you expect them to be in terms of identifying hardware problems?
When hardware goes bad a customer might see performance problems and report it, or perhaps notice hardware errors in the logs.
Or is it the host's job to be monitoring hardware components status? Would you consider such monitoring to be part of the basic service or an optional management extra?
I'm interested in your expectations with a typical dedicated server.

Just wanted to post my experience with Cari.Net.
I was chatting with Drew online, he was very professional and helpful. We discussed my needs, the price and their network. Then I decided to give it a try. My server was delivered within half an hour. It was very fast in my estimation. A+ on the sales and delivery.
I will post my review later on down the road about the performance. But even now I get incredible speeds from my server.
A+ Cari.Net, keep up the good work.

How many of you use RBL/CBL checks on your email servers?
I've generally stayed away from them because of the chance of them having false positives, but have been meaning to try them for a while. With spam becoming a larger and larger problem, and the lists getting more and more mature, I figure they can't do anything but help.
I'm very surprised at the difference they made, and I've attached a graph to demonstrate the difference.

i found cheapvps.co.uk and they have that special 20% off deal on XEN VPSs. Sounds good to me.
the plans i am debating are the 256mb ram and 384mb ram.
now from my calculations,
the Linux 256mb /10GB/300GB plan is $18 per month. (-15% discount for 1 year = $183.60 - 20% off the discount coupon = $146.88
the Linux 384mb /15GB/600GB plan is $24 per month. (-15% discount for 1 year = $244.80 - 20% off the discount coupon = $195.84
So now the question is: Will the 384mb plan make a difference vs the 256? I will be using XEN.
I have decided to go with the U.K. server since i am currently working in the middle east and found out its hops are much closer and ping better than that of the U.S.
Also, what OS should I choose for easy package installation and such? (dont want apt-get or portage to sit there updating its package system wasting my bandwidth)
Please help decipher the following terminology! All plans include1 Fixed IP with 1 extra IP free with justification (What?)
Burst RAM double that of the guarenteed RAM on Linux (What does this mean? So if i pick 384 guaranteed ram how much burst do i get?)
Free HyperVM or Virtuozzo Power Panel (VZPP) management panel for reboots, reloads and status checking. (Does HyperVM work with XEN or is it for OpenVZ only?)
Unlimited reboots
Unlimited reloads
24×7 Support
DirectAdmin is $10/mo and $15 setup email sales@cheapvps.co.uk to order
cPanel is $15/mo and $15 setup - email sales@cheapvps.co.uk

Well I think that I have finally narrowed down my choices to three different possible hosts (leaving room for more suggestions of course)
But I was wondering based on speed - which host would you suggest. I would like to have mp3s load up and start playing as fast as possible.
The choices I was considering were:
knownhost
downtownhost
hostgator
As for whether to go with a shared or a reseller package, I am still unsure. But it seems that Hostgator offers a huge shared package - I am hoping to keep the cost of all this down to $7 - $10 a month.

I have been doing my homework on windows ASP.NET shared hosting providers and have narrowed down my choice to discountASP & CrystalTech. I am now struggling with making the final decision and would appreciate any thoughts/input/comments/experience that you might have.
My requirements are:
- ASP.NET 2.0
- SQL Server 2005
- SSL Certificate
- Daily backups
- Ability to backup SQL database in real-time
- 20GB Bandwidth
- 100MB Disk Space
- 300MB SQL Disk Space
Site Description: Publish educational material. Users can navigate the site and see articles for free or login and see premium content with subscription. Currently getting 7500 views a day, 1500 visits and 25,000 hits.
Specific items of note:
- discountASP runs apps in isolated application pool, CrystalTech does not
- CrystalTech has phone support, discountASP does not
- CrystalTech is $16.95/month, discountASP is $30/month
- neither provide guaranteed uptime (compared to aspwebhosting.com which does for example - any others that guarantee uptime??)
Will a shared plan with one of these providers be adequate for my needs? If not, any other recommendations?

I have an account that is going from a shared hosting account to a dedicated with theplanet and I want to transfer it. Concerns I have is that the site is using an SSL. What things do I need to watch out for when transferring. Since I don't have root access I will have to do this transfer with the account function, correct?
This site has a database and SSL, so I thought it would hopefully be easier to use the cpanel account migration tool

I'm trying to setup a shared virtual storage enviroment (much like a external harddisk) for about 5 users working offsite/remote in a drag n drop environment like windows folder.. It's mostly just doc/xls file.
Is there any service out that that allows this or software I could use if I have my own webspace/server?

Couple days ago all of a sudden my host that I've been with for years all of a sudden went down the drain. Why? Supposedly, my site was used for spam? Stupid. They are "trying" to compile my database and files, but I DOUBT that will happen.
With an already 24 hour downtime. I am receiving a lot of emails and phone calls on site. I need my community to get back up asap! So I guess it's time to find a new host.
I need a RECOMMENDATION on a westcoast host that will provide me with great customer service and the requirements I need to run my community.
Must handle vBulletin real well, have the requirements I need, and have great customer service.
This is a local forum, which is why I would like to be on a Westcoast Host.

I currently have a reseller accounts from Thawte, Comodo, and RapidSSL, but have realized that I can purchase Comodo and Geotrust SSL certificates cheaper from Namecheap.com and Enom.com
Namecheap.com support is (as always) superb. Any opinions from Enom.com support?
What about Resellerclub.com? I know that they recently started to sell Thawte certs at very good prices. How good is their support?

I am having a hard time trying to find Apacer RAM sticks. Specifically I am looking for part number 77.G1147.402 1GB REG PC3200 CL3.
We have Apacer RAM in some of our older servers and need to stock up the on-site spares.
I have checked all the normal places like Provantage, New Egg and a few others but can't locate any Apacer RAM for the life of me.

Many guy will be answer: "yes, we are interested". And many DC have a such offer. But, usually it mean some time for setup - from 15 minute to few hours. I speak about true instant server - you will select config what comply to your requirements, order it, pay for invoice and within a few minutes after payment receive welcome message.
What you think about such offer? What server config will be interesting and with what O/S, addons, budget, etc.

Which is the best place to purchase SuperMicro servers from, Germany or some other European country? Mind you that they will be deployed in Germany!
I am in search of SuperMicro servers as you can read from the title. What I need is to purchase 6-10 SuperMicro servers which will eventually be deployed in Germany. So the question here is whether it would be more suitable, with regards to prices, to purchase the servers from Germany or from some other European country that has better offers?

From my previous experience I know that unless I purchase a domain-only validated
SSL cert, I will need to send to the registrar documentation of the company owner of
the domain the SSL will be attached to. I remember that from the times when Verisign
was the monopoly.
I am in Peru and the official language is spanish, so I was wondering if in case documents are required to be sent, do they need to be officialy translated?

I'm having trouble deciding whether it'll be alright to use dedicated hosting for an upcoming service.
1. In what scenario would dedicated hosting be insufficient?
2. When should I go for self service instead?
3. What do you recommend for learning server administration?

I would like to start a site for a gaming community. It will cover a few upcoming mods, so I don't know what to expect at the moment in terms of how much space/bandwidth I need.
The mods support the redirect feature, where if the player does not have the next map, it is automatically downloaded. This is where a portion of the site comes in. I would like to offer the downloadable content (maps/skins/etc.). Maybe looking at multiple users (possibly up to 20) downloading maps around 10-30MB each.
So what would be the best type of host to use in this case? Can I get away with using a cheaper host (shared, VPS)?

Also, do you have a recommendation for VPS or dedicated. My budget is not large. Is this enough 30/40$ per month for this web site?

creating a site where people will be able to upload videos (haha its much more specific like that lol not like YouTube or anything).
Anyway i've played around with shared hosting for a while, numerous other projects of mine, and all of them seem to have limits on how long a script can run etc.
So say I want users to be able to upload videos up to around 100MB, on a normal shared host they wouldn't be able to do this right? Mainly because the script would time out or CPU usage would be too high? The site is pretty targeted, so I'm not really expecting that many videos to be uploaded, and old ones could be deleted after use.
My question is, to do this properly, do i need to look into a dedicated server? I really don't know much about hosting etc, but it seems that most shared hosts have heavy restrictions on CPU usage.

We just set up our current dedicated server and have an ip address. When we created the user account on plesk, we dedicated the ip address to that website. My questions is we would like to add another website to this server and if we change the current dedicate IP address to a shared IP address for the new website, will it mess anything up with our server, how search engines see our site or how the dns or domain name gets forward to our server?
My understanding is you only really need a dedicate IP for either ssl or anoyomous ftp.

I'm planning to launch a user submitted news site tailored for my country and since i've been a coder all my life i know very little about hosting.
Money is a bit of a problem, i want to know whether is it a good idea to start off with a shared hosting and then move on to dedicated hosting as the site grows. I dont want to dump money in dedicated servers at the begining only to find out that me and my buddies are the only ones using the site.
I have a few options at hand. godaddy, bluehost, lunarpages etc... but i really liked the grid computing deal from mediatemple.net (100GB, 1000GB for $20/mo + scalability)

I have a reseller account with cPanel and WHM.
I purchased the extra "dedicated" ip address for my use. I understand it is dedicated exclusively to my accounts, but shared between each of my accounts...
The provider also provides a "shared" ip. I understand that if I did not have my own dedicated ip, then I would use this ip and it would be shared between my accounts, and among all the other accounts on his server...
My question pertains to the way WHM initializes a new account. It assigns the company shared ip to each of my new domain accounts, instead of my dedicated ip.
Pinging the newly created domain account results in seeing the company shared ip - not my dedicated ip.
Is this correct? I think WHM should be assigning my dedicated ip, and ping should show my dedicated ip.

I recently inherited the responsibilities of 2 websites and will be in charge of creating 2 more.
Of these 4 websites, only 2 have serious traffic. The current site, made in Drupal, peaked at 3,000 unique visitors a day and on average receives about 500 uniques a day. This site will most likely be the highest in traffic.
My boss would like to know if dedicated hosting is necessary (I'm the entire IT department), I should be on shared hosting correct?
The 4 websites will be built upon the following platforms:
Drupal
WordPress
PHP
TWiki (open source Wiki web collaboration platform)
