View 6 Replies View RelatedI have seen many articles about setting up your server. WAMP, LAMP, IIS and more. But they are based on software.
I want to know that What server hardware is required to setup a server? What type of internet connection is needed? What will be total cost?
I am from middle class family from india. I have airtel broadband 256 kbps dynamic IP unlimited plan for my daily use. Airtel provides business plans too with static IP address. You can check their tariff here:

I want to know that if I want to host upto 10 websites with upto 20 lakh pageviews/month on a server...
which internet connection should I use?
what type of server hardware should I use?
what should be its configuration?
How can I set domain name on my webserver IP?
I am not going to host 10 sites on server. Even I am not going to setup a server.
I have never seen anybody talking about server hardware. They always talk about software (apache, php, iis, sql etc).
I want to know about server hardware and its configuration.
I have built a server so I can co-locate it to be used for shared hosting. The specification is high, compared to most dedicated server offerings, so I was considering splitting it up into different virtual machines for different purposes. The specification is: Intel Xeon 3230 (4x 2.66ghz), 8GB DDR ECC RAM, Seagate Cheetah SAS 15,000rpm (4x 147GB), Adaptec RAID 5405 (RAID 6 Array with Battery Backup), Dual on-board NIC, etc.
The original plan was to use this machine as just one linux server, but I am concerned most of its potential will not be exploited. So I am exploring the possibility of setting it up as 2 Virtual Machines, installing Linux on one and Windows on the other. This way I can offer hosting for ASP and ASP.NET, and possibly MS SQL and/or Exchange depending on costs for their licences.
What Microsoft licences are suitable for servers used for shared hosting? From what I can gather there are several ways of being licenced, but I can't figure out which is the most cost effective. It seems you buy the server OS edition that supports your requirements, then pay another licence per user (CAL?) - I haven't got a clue how many users I will need to have though. Then if you want to use MS SQL, DNS or Exchange you need the correct edition - and buy licences for these too.
Does anyone know roughly what I should be looking to pay for what? I would ideally like to have MS SQL, DNS and Exchange - but am aware that the licence could be so expensive that it wouldn't be worth doing.
I'm looking for a good place to get a dedicated server from that allows IRC other than Staminus and has decent DDoS mitigation just to be safe. I would prefer total network bandwidth capacity to be no less than 10GB/s that pier with premium tier-1 bandwidth providers.
Needing:
Processor: No less than a dual core
RAM: 1-4 GB RAM
HDD: No less than 150GB HDD
IPs: 64 or 128 IP Addresses
No less than 1500GB/m bandwidth on 100MB
Budget: $150 - $190 USD
I am using Hostgator's basic dedicated plan, and wondering how practical it would be to consider starting a sort of internet TV, where I will be hosting the content. I see big guys are doing that YouTube is doing that for example, and there are lots of other sites that are offering online shows, like BBC, CNN, etc.
Anyone has any idea how this works, from the server's point of view? Is it practical to think that with a basic dedicated server one can host an internet movie / TV channel? I know that the obvious question will be the number of visitors, and how many hours / day they are watching the TV, well, that would be a tough question to answer, but I would prefer to be ready for the worst, say 1 00 000 people watching 2 hours a day, or even worse (I mean, good so far as the popularity is considered, but not so good for the server).
here is the deal my speed tests are all saying 1500 down/1000 up
but im getting really slow browsing and occassionally the "web page not found" error.
no, i dont have spyware or anything, i just changed ISPs so i know it is some kind of setting... which one
Does anyone here know about a dedicated server hosting company located in either Florida or Texas (United States) which allows the use of IRC? I plan to link to an already established network. Nothing illegal!

I am not concerned about management levels. Managed or un-managed doesn't matter. I would prefer a U.S. based location.
1. Dont ask me what specs I am looking for; the under $100 budget will dictate the specs.
2. Yes, I am aware that there have been two topics about dedicated servers that allow IRC in the recent past. I was unable to find a host from those topics.
3. Yes, I am sure I am looking for a dedicated. Don't post links to shell providers.
4. I am about 99% sure, I will not purchase a dedicated server from your sig. If you don't have something useful to say, please don't say it at all.
5. I'm not looking for someone to tell me that its hard to find a dedicated server that allows IRC under 100 dollars. I am also fully aware that most dedicated providers don't allow IRC. On top of that I understand WHY a lot of providers don't allow IRC. Please don't post if your only going to say why IRC isn't allowed.
6. I have checked the offers sections. No luck. Please don't tell me to check the offers section.
7. I am looking for a dedicated server under 100-dollars. That's the bottom line. Thanks for reading the entire post Wait! Did I tell you thanks for reading the entire post?

View 14 Replies View Relatedi just buyed a dedicated server with 100mbps dedicated port..
how can i test the traffic on port to see is is realy working on 100mbps?
I've got a CentOS 5 box that I want to cap/throttle the speed of the port to ensure that no more than 50 meg is passing in either direction at any given time.
- I know you can do this with FreeBSD using ipfw but that's not an option for me at the moment...
- I also know you can do this with some reasonably decent switching gear but again that's not an option. It's not my switch and they don't provide capped ports.
So, the question then becomes is there any way to lock the port down to 50 meg using only linux itself?
looking for a dedicated server outside usa/canada, with irc access under 75$.

View 8 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone know of a hosting Linux package (must be UK based) that has the usuals (PHP, MySQL, subdomains, email, Apache ModRewrite) that is geared towards hosting lots of low bandwidth sites?
I use several great hosters but they limit the amount of addon domains or charge you through the roof for extra ones. I'm thinking a package that will let me do 15 - 25 domains. More would be a bonus. The bandwidth allowance is not a problem. A lot of my customers' sites use less than 100 MB a month.
what is the best server hosting company that i can get speed from to the midle east --?

I am looking for somewhere in the US or Canada that can host a VPS with the following requirements:
10gb space
256mb ram - burst 512mb
200gb bandwidth
2 ips (or 1 with cheap price for an extra ip)
Public IRC Capable (not linking with EFNet, etc.)
I've been searching for something that can meet my needs but I've been at a loss. BuyAVPS became a big issue, and I pulled out quickly before the most recent downtime, SolarVPS before that with their lovely billing problems and collection threats.
Do website builders generally go with shared hosting or dedicated server? I mean, if they work on several websites would they get a dedicated server instead of shared? From what I understand through reading shared hosting is basically if you only have one website. So one with multiple websites would go with a dedicated server?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI currently have two servers with vaserve, one under the a2b2 brand and the other under the EpicVPS brand, which I am very happy with, but they don't allow the hosting of IRC or bots in any way.
I was wondering if anyone could suggest a (very) low cost (very) low spec plan that would allow me to host a single IRC bot. I'm looking for something around 64mb ram, and whatever disk/bandwidth you think would be enough for the bot.
Wixed is an amazing hosting company, never had or encountered downtime and if I have a question the staff is always there to help me out. And this for good prices.
- uptime: 10/10
- service: 10/10

I have a client that wants to expand their website with a downloads section that has thousands of files and tens of gigabytes. I'm considering two options:
1. dedicated hosting:
- Is it an advantage to use a dedicated hosting service in the same city as opposed to one in another country?
- How would I go about changing hosting providers if one doesn't work out?
- How would I go about making and restoring backups?
- How does one access a dedicated hosting machine nowadays? Is it still via Telnet or something like that?
2. own hosting
- Do you think it's practical to have a dedicated server and link in company offices?
- Do the benefits of being easily able to change internet link providers and to make snap daily backups outweigh the benefits of a hosting provider's reliable infrastructure?
This dedicated server would only be a file server. The website itself would be on a normal hosting platform that would just redirect users to the dedicated server for the files to be downloaded. How is this kind of thing usually done?
I am not the brightest when it comes to IRC. Ideally we want to create a "Chat Room" for our website members. We only need one room, so I am thinking a whole server is over kill However I am interested in knowing if not requiring a whole server, is there a service perhaps that allows us to have our own branded irc channel, IE: irc.ourwebsite.com ?
I am only thinking IRC as we want our users to use the web based interface, and there is a plethora of these that can run through a java applet to the IRC channel. Or are there better solutions?
I am open to suggestions, we are only looking to have about 30 people in the chat room.
So far 1and1.com seems to be the worst I've ever dealt with. I think they should fire the call centers they're hiring and actually find people to represent their company who actually care about their customers. All the people they are currently using sound so ignorant that I feel like I'm speaking to a robot. Through your personal experience, who do you think is the worst?
