Secure Web Space Costs

I'm working for an organisation which is looking for a company who can provide us with a public website to be updated with a CMS and 132 secure areas which should be accessible from that public website.

Today I was sent a proposal by them stating that there would be a cost per year of:

£3,350 for data storage areas of up to 20mb space per secure area (i.e. £25 per secure area)

£6,700 for data storage areas of up to 75mb space per secure area (i.e. £50.70 per secure area)

We really would prefer much more space per area than this (upwards of 2GB per area) and are a bit wary of how much is being charged for the storage space.

I have three questions on this :

1) How do these prices compare with other hosts that you know of? Are they reasonable?

2) Is this 'secure space' much more expensive than normal space?

3) Are there hosts that offer unlimited secure space for reasonable prices?

Btw, these are the facilities that this host provides:

6 redundant Internet connections
24x7x365 onsite support
Fire protection
Backup power generators
Daily back up to magnetic tape media
Anti virus protection for all uploaded content
Industry Standard Cisco firewalls

How To Secure A Web Site
The searching I've done has uncovered numerous articles about securing a Web server...but I don't have control at that level. What I'm looking for is advice and tips on how to best secure an individual Web site to ward off hackers and the like.

More specifically, how to best do it using the tools available in cPanel, like Web Protect, HotLink protection, Leech Protect, Index Manager, etc., plus other things I should do if cPanel's tools aren't sufficient.

Most Secure Dedicated Web Server Setup
I am seeking a little input from others who use multi-CPU machines with large memory as web servers and mysql servers.

I will be more than happy to give additional information I might have overlooked if you need it. Just ask.

We are starting to run more and more dedicated hosts running joomla applications. I've been trying to find the very best settings for both performance and security that I can for the servers to function well specifically with their joomla applications.

Serves are not used for *anything* else at all.

The servers are strictly used to serve up web pages. No need for anything other than what apache/php, joomla requires and a few other things such as ffmpeg, etc.

I would like to remove all tools which aren't needed for such a server, leaving a bare minimum server which is less susceptible to hacking.

I've never messed with the root account so wonder if I can simply not allow any access as root other than terminal, perhaps not even su by giving another account full root access and of course, while allowing the system to continue to function properly with the many things which must run as root.

I would like to do this on all of my public machines which are of course behind firewalls. I also have load balancers and cache devices in front of the web servers but at this time, they are not activated so aren't in the realm of this question.

Development is done in a separate environment and the data is pushed to the web server via private network to the web servers. This means no need for shared tools, FTP, or anything else which users would need in a shared environment.

The servers are 8-way IBM, running linux and apache, php/APC.
Servers have 32GB of memory and I can install up to 64GB.

Databases are run on separate machines which are also dedicated only to running mysql databases. Same machines as above.

Machines all run multiple network cards bonded as a single IP.

So, my questions are;

How can I best utilize my hardware to take advantage of their memory capacities.

For example, on the web servers, I'd like to find the best settings for httpd.conf which takes advantage of the machines resources.

On MySQL servers, I'd like to do the same as the above, taking the best advantage of the hardware/memory.

For web serving and for joomla, I seek the very best security settings I can possibly get. I say best because since they aren't used by users, there is no need to have a lot of tools and access to these machines so it should not be a problem to tighten these machines up a great deal.

Any input from those who have such experiences would be very welcome as I've been finding no one place for help on this.

Web Customer Needs Secure Reports For His Customers
I host a website for a customer that performs accounting functions for a variety of clients and produces daily/weekly reports for these clients. He wants to be able to provide a link on his website with the customer number and password for customers to be able to access their reports but doesn't want anyone else to be able to access these reports. What is the best method for doing this and can anyone point me to sample code.

He writes the reports with his software then prints them as a PDF file and sends them to www.hisdomain.com/reports and this is where the customer picks them up from.

Web Space As Personal Backup
Does any reliable hosting company that offers hundreds of gigs space allow "personal backups", ie. non-web content? I've been looking at ToS of some big names but most if not all don't allow this.

It would be only 1-2 gigs, so I might get away with it anyway on most hosts, but would like to avoid problems in the future. Dreamhost offers both SVN and rsync, which I'd like a lot, but they clearly forbid such use.

And, I do have an external hard drive and very important files are also on DVD and memory stick, but since I need to purchase webhosting I'm looking at this extra option too.

Shared File Space For All Web Servers
Is it normal practice to have shared filespace that multiple web servers can access? Then I just provide my developers access to that filespace (one server, instead of multiple users on multiple servers) to manage files for different sites easily... right? (also meaning multiple servers can serve the same content)

So.. what would be the best way to do this? We're talking Linux systems here by the way. What sort of specs would such a server need?

I *think* it's NAS that I'm trying to get at.. unsure though if that's correct or not!

UK Web Hosting 500MB Space 1GB Bandwidth Existing .org.uk Domain
I'm the webmaster for a church website: stpetersbraunstone.org.uk and our domain & hosting renewal is coming up, so I'm looking to see if there's a better deal.

We're with namehog.net (and have been for 2 years with no problems at all) on their Professional package. The renewal fees are 105GBP (web hosting) + 5.90GBP (domain name) + 17.5pc VAT to cover the next 2 years, which comes to 130.31GBP.

The site is powered by WordPress, so PHP and MySQL are needed. And we upload lots of photos, so need at least 250MB webspace I'd have thought. So far, our highest monthly bandwidth usage has been under 800Mb, and our visitor numbers are increasing and our highest monthly figure so far was 401.

Any recommendations gratefully received. There seems to be many different companies out there who offer what I want, so I'm after some personal recommendations please.

I've already used this site to discount streamline.net due to bad reviews.
I'm looking at fuzioned.com and redfoxhosting.co.uk - any thoughts?
I've also come across no-wires.co.uk - has anyone had any good or bad experiences with them?

And yes, I have submitted my details to the "request quote" thing.

Uplink Costs
I'm not much of a co-location expert as we do not own our own equipment but a customer we help from time to time is asking me about this. They have a cabinet at theplanet and only a pair of redundant 100mbit uplinks coming into their cisco 2924 they rent from theplanet. Theplanet wants $350/mo along with $350 setup for a pair of redundant gigabit uplinks. Then another $225/mo for a Cisco Catalyst 2960G.

Does this at all seem reasonable to anyone? The switch can just be purchased so it's not that big of a deal. The uplink cost cannot be avoided though. If it's not reasonable obviously they can go back to their account manager to discuss it but I don't know what you'd expect to pay in Dallas for that.

Also before anyone suggests any other provider not an option. Last time they looked around theplanet was the only provider in dallas capable of handling the attacks. Others would just null route the IP's rather than trying to mitigate the attacks. So no point in making suggestions as it's been explored in the past.

Datacenter Support Cant Tell Me How Much A KVM Costs
So I needed to reboot one of my colocated machines into a different kernel, compile and load a kernel module (for a network interface) and then bring up that interface. So I called the datacenter support to ask if they could compile and load the module for me and inquire as to about how long that would take. On their website they say they provide Best Effort third party application support and 24/7 Phone Support with on site server admins so this doesn't really seem like a unreasonable request. I want to pay them for support and they're there to do it right?

Apparently not.

The support guy said that compiling and loading the module was dependant on "very many factors". The first "factor" he inquired about was what OS we were running--Debian. "Debian isn't a supported OS, we can't do that for you." What? I'm sorry you CAN'T do it? I thought you provided "Best Effort" support. This seems more like zero effort support to me. (I'm willing to provide step by step instructions but apparently they won't do that because they don't want to.)

Ok, fine, you won't compile and load something for me no big deal that's what KVMs are for.

"Can you hook up a KVM?"

"Sure"

"How much would that cost"

"I don't know, this is the support department not the sales department, you'd have to ask the sales department tomorrow."

Really? So if my server is exploding at night and you wont even try to do anything about it and my only option is to have you setup a KVM you can't tell me how much that will cost? What am I going to tell my boss when we get a rediculous bill for a KVM--the support guy wouldn't tell me how much it costs? Not good enough. Not only that but you're going to be a give me a snarky response to my question--a question I only asked because you wouldn't provide remote hands?

Is it just me or is it pretty rediculous that the support guys can't tell you how much KVM costs? Not all situations where you'd need KVM are planned or happen during the hours the sales department is open. It apparently isn't a problem to have them hook up the KVM 24/7 you just wont know how much it's going to cost you until the next business day. Is this typical of datacenter support?

My guess is that support is completely hit and miss, I've had great experiences with a small datacenter before (Joe's helped out when a hard drive in a RAID failed) and bad experiences with larger datacenters (one you've all heard of, I asked ahead of time if they could ghost a drive and replace it. They said yes. I provided step by step instructions with screenshots they tried it and failed saying "I don't really know linux, I'm a windows guy, I don't know what I'm doing, I messed it up somehow, I don't know what I did" and yet still billed me for it).

I'm getting the impression they won't honor the remaining time on the account (prepaid for (1) year). This possible fraud?

Direct Admin License Costs
I've just had a quote for a VPS that seemed good value for money until the cost of a Direct Admin license was added ($15 extra).

Looking at DA's pricing the cheapest license you can buy is an internal license (in bulk) which is available to server providers only at 9$ a month.

If that is the case why is it that quite a few providers in the offers forum are providing DA for 5$ or 6$?

As these licenses are being offered on low end VPS with tight margins anyway, I can't understand how they can afford to make a loss on the control panel (if they are in fact).

Omnis Network - A Host Be Avoided At All Costs
I had been a Omnis.com customer for the last 6 years.
Was hosting 8 Domains with them and paying nearly $100 on each domain per year.

Now this issue happened many times before but i ignored it, but not anymore.

One of the accounts - they had capped email limit of 200MB - now we all know that is not much.

One morning i getup and i have no emails - wondering what the issue is , i login to my account and notice that i am 30MB over the limit, now that is not too much, so i think i willjust login and clear some emails and make room.

To my surprise on logging in - i see NO EMAILS whatsoever in any of my email accounts. Now the dilema is what to delete when i see no emails , so my next step is to call customer support.

Thinking that i am in Los Angeles, these guys are in Los Angeles - they would be nice and helpful , to my surprise i have never spoken to more rude and egoistic people in my life.

The support guy has only 1 solution for me - go in to my email control panel and delete the accounts and recreate them to get free disk space - but is that not amazing - he says i cannot see any of my emails because i am over the limit -- he says he cannot upgrade my account even if i pay right away , because i am over the limit - so only solution delete the account - with a sad heart i deleted my wife's account which had 40MB in it and recreated it.

Even then the emails did not show up - so very nicely the support guy says - Sir! give it 4 - 5 hours to refresh and then you will see your emails.

Now tell me my friends is this the kind of host you would ever want to go with ? that also after spending nearly $700 every year for the last 6 years..

Please stay away from them - i am in the process of moving over to innohosting after reading this forums , rameen of innohosting was so helpful - wish all hosts were the same.

Server Costs - High Traffic Websites
I have a client with a site (wordpress blog) that gets 10,000 + hits a day. I need to find him a dedicated managed server so that his site runs smoothly and also has no outages. I just received a quote from another host for his Managed Dedicated Servers.

CPU1: Intel Xeon 5310 Clovertown (Quad Core)
CPU2: Intel Xeon 5310 Clovertown (Quad Core)
Total CPU Cores: Eight (8)
System RAM: 6144MB (6GB) DDR2 ECC Registered System RAM
Primary Hard Disk: 73GB Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) 15,000 RPM High-Performance Hard Disk
Second Hard Disk: 250GB SATA-II 7,200 RPM Hard Disk (nightly backup disk)
Data Transfer: 2000GB Premium Monthly Bandwidth (100Mbps uplinked port)
Operating System: CentOS Enterprise Linux 5 64-Bit (x86_64)
Control Panel License: cPanel / WHM + Fantastico Auto Installer$695 a month

He posts about 5-10 blogs a day too, so it's definitely a growing community website. He also has a forum with 6500 posts and 389 members.

Is this a reasonable price for a dedicated server? Would you recommend a different configuration of hardware that might make it cheaper? I would also like some examples of other sites on similar configurations if you have any, so that I can show my client what they use.

Looking To Cut Costs Without Loosing Quality. Switch To Managed Cluster From Dedicate
actually we are hosting around 130-140 sites on a dedicated server in spain. We are paying 325 € (442 $) per month for the server, 250gb of backup space included, plus 105 € (143 $) per month for admin of the box, that help us to migrate new sites, install scripts, hack attacks, etc.

That includes cpanel, fantastico, q9300 cpu, 4 gb ram, 2x500 gb sata in raid 1, 100 mb port and 16 ip's. I know we can get more for less, but the connectivity in spain is fast for our clients, very reliable, and the phone support of datacenter is fast when we need it.

Apart from that, i have to pay for rvskin, rvsitebuilder and easyantispam.

What i want to know, is there a way i could get a good european host with good network uptime and datacenter support if needed (i.e. ram needs to be changed, kvm doesn't work, etc) and, if possible, good management (although i can continue to pay what i pay).

I was thinking that as our box is underused (176 gb home dir, around 200 gb total, avg load for week 0.97) maybe a managed cluster host could help to cut our costs greatly (at least 30%) maintaining or even improving speed & quality of service? or even grid hosting or vps?

To Find Web Host For Personal Web Site
This is my first attempt at using a web hosting company. I currently use a free service from my ISP that gives me 25 MB of space for a personal web site. After only a few weeks, I have exceeded that limit and now find myself needing much more.

My personal website will contain information of a bowling league that my friends and I belong to. I plan to have many pages of data from an Excel spreadsheet included, either in a database format, or just plain html. I also plan to have several family photos and some video on my web site. I will be adding pages on a weekly basis.

I did some research and I felt I needed something like 25G of storage for all my pages containing tables and photos. Since I am not using it for business purposes, I am looking for something very basic, if that is possible.

If anyone knows a decent host that can accomodate my needs, which is simple, but requiring a lot of space, please share your recommendations. My budget is between $5 to $10 per month.

Where Is A Database Most Secure
I'm building an ASP.NET 2.0 web app on a shared hosting plan. It looks like I have two good places to store my database. One is the App_Data folder that my .NET training tells me is the place to store databases. However, like many shared hosting plans I have a directory above the publicly accessible webroot folder with serves as my application root. Right next to my webroot folder is a databases folder which my web host apparently sets up as a default location for databases. So which is more secure? My App_Data folder? Or a "sibling" folder to my webroot?

If it matters, I have an Access .mdb, which I may upgrade to a SQL server .mdf.

Tom: Hi, where is your password recovery form for the helpdesk?
Support: How may i help you?
Tom: Did you see my message?
Support: Yes
Support: Let me know your email address
Tom: [REMOVED]
Support: Okay Let me check
Support: Your new password is [REMOVED]

So, the only think really stopping someone from logging into my helpdesk and posting a server cancellation ticket is a little bit of research to find my email address and a traceroute to find my host.

Way To Secure SVN
So I just got SVN installed on my server, and now I'm wondering about the best way to go about securing it. This is what I've had done so far

the executables were installed to /usr/bin as ROOT

Then I created a directory in /usr/local/svn as ROOT to hold the svn repositories (the conf folders, etc).

I've decided that I'd like to use the SVNSERVE tool rather than have to run Apache2 which my current VPS provider does not provide any support for.

So I've run SVNSERVE like so:
svnserve -d -r /usr/local/svn --listen-port=7126

Then for each repository within the /usr/local/svn folder I've gone into the conf folder and added:

anon-access = none
auth-access = write
password-db = passfile
realm = myrealm

The passfile is located in the same directory (ie. /usr/local/svn/test) and contains my users in the format:

[users]
harry = harryssecret
sally = sallyssecret

I then run my checkouts like so:
svn checkout svn://mysite.com:7126/test

Now my question is how secure is this. I was tempted to use svn+ssh but I couldn't seem to figure out how to get it configured. Is the protection I have adequate? How easily can this be compromised? What steps should I take to lock it down further. Can I limit the connection to SVNSERVE to only come from certain specific IP's... similar to how apache does:

Order deny,allow
deny from all
allow from 192.153.123.12

HOW TO SECURE YOUR SERVER
I see that one of the most important things nowadays is the security of our servers.

I would like to know from people here that are running big and small servers what they have done to secure their servers. What tips, what softwares they have used, which applications using and are more secure than others.. generally everything that could make good in the protection and security of our servers.

Even if you asked helped from a company doing that work, what changes they have done to your servers? which options they changed?

I am making this thread so as to collect all info we know in one place.. One knows about that tip.. the other one knows another tip.. having all of them somewhere could make a tremendous difference..

Moderators please dont move that thread in any software discussion or other forum as this is one of the most active ones and also has instant relation with the dedicated servers we buy.

Most Secure CMS
What would be the most secure free CMS at the moment? I ask this because im looking to setup a website, and i dont have enough money to invest in a custom coded website, so to start out with ill use a free CMS, but i dont want to be hacked.

Now i know that because the CMS's are open source, they can still be hacked, what im looking for is something that is the most secure, preferably with sql injection protection.s?

No Need To Secure Server
I have a friend that works in the IT. He is about to start his own business, something in the line of network connection or something like that. I was telling him that I'm planning on getting my own dedicated server but that I have no idea how to secure the server. He told me that most linux desitributions come with their own build in firewall and that I don't need to worry about security. He told me to just ask my dedicated server provider to make sure the firewall is enabled and that's it. When he told me that I thought to myself, either this guy has no idea what he's talking about, or those guys at Webhostingtalk have no idea what they are talking about!

Secure FTP
Secure FTP?

Entirely dependent on Client Software or do we need to buy an SSL certificate and install it on our server as well?

How it works?
