Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Set Master NS (SOA) Record Properly (BIND Does Not Notify NS In SOA)
Oct 24, 2014
How to get plesk (12) to set the SOA record properly on existing domains?
Let me explain the issue first. We use PowerDNS supermaster mode as slave servers. The way this works is we configure PowerDNS so that it sees the plesk server as a so called supermaster.
When a so called supermaster notifies the slave servers on a zone update, if it doesn't exist it just adds the zone and pulls it in. This works very nice and without any scripting required (there's only the issue of removing them, I just have a script that deletes all domains that haven't been able to update in 2 weeks every day from the database).
The only issue here is that BIND does *NOT* ever notify the nameserver listed in the SOA. The nameserver listed in the SOA should be the master (and hence - thus plesk itself) and it being a master it should be where the changes occur and notifying it isn't necessary thus, which is why BIND doesn't do that.
Unfortunately plesk doesn't seem to grasp this concept. It will happily put any nameserver in the SOA record. Have adjusted the template and it seems to work ok for new domains now (not sure how reliably though), but it's a major pain for the existing ones. It's very hard to update them properly.
Reapplying template -> no change to master NS/SOA
Switching mode to slave and back to master -> no change to master NS/SOA
Resetting to default -> no change to master NS/SOA
The only way I've found so far is to delete the records manually, add them again and hope it doesn't change the order (yes it does this a lot, you'll have the correct order listed, click apply and the order just changes. Some times it adds them to the bottom of the list, some times to the top - not confusing at all).
Plesk really should be taught that if it's master, it should be the one in the SOA. Whilst my issue is larger due to the supermaster and slaves not creating the zone (and hence my slave not functioning), it is an issue in any setup because a slave listed as SOA will not be notified and doesn't pick up on the changes right away. Depending on the refresh times it might take quite some time for the slave to pick up the change then, which isn't desirable either as it will leave you with a slave that still returns incorrect records.

In 'Operations > DNS manager > Nameservers' the nameserver lists the hostname of the node as the nameserver. How do you specify or alter the nameserver to something different which would be more standard for example ns.domain.name?

I migrated from one server running Plesk 10.4.4 Update #59 to a new server running Plesk 11 which I then updated to 12.0.18 Update #32. Since moving to Plesk 12 the "Notify when disk space/traffic usage reaches" emails have been being sent to our customers set up on the server whereas previously they were sent to the server admin email address.
Is this a change with this version?

I have two VPS with two different Datacenters. I am running my website on one of the VPS which has Plesk Panel 11.5 installed on it. Since my second server is not in use, I would like to use it as a Secondary DNS Server for redundancy. I know this can be done with Plesk Expand. But, I am not in a position to invest further as I just run 4 domains on my main server. I was looking at installing some free control panel on my secondary VPS and set it up as a Secondary DNS Server if possible. But, I could not find any Guides on setting this up.
How I can do this? I see that we have an option in Plesk - 'Switch DNS Service mode' which can be used to either setup my first server as a Secondary or Primary. I have installed Webmin/Virtualmin on the second server, but how to set this up perfectly. I can reinstall the 2nd Server if required, but not my first one with Plesk.

Our partition become full and drop the vps, after that we are unable to start postifx, actually postfix start but master not.
So if I run :
/etc/init.d/postfix restart
Shutting down postfix: [FAILED]
Starting postfix: [ OK ]
/etc/init.d/postfix status
master is stopped
I already try to reconfigure all
/usr/local/psa/admin/bin/mailmng-service --start-service --mail-component=all
Into ToolsSettings i change between qmail and come back again to postfix (reinstalling)...

I've been trying to configure Plesk as a hidden (super) master for a domain and I've run into some problems.
First off, for those who don't know, a hidden master is a nameserver that is actually the master server, yet does not list in the NS records of the domain.
The servers listed as NS in the zone have accepted the server as their master, but the rest of the world does not know it exists. Hence the term hidden master. The slaves consist of two PowerDNS servers that acknowledge the Plesk server as a supermaster, thus enabling automatic zone configuration and the like upon receiving a notify from the Plesk server.
However, the Plesk server refuses to send automatic notify messages to the slaves (listed in the NS records, also added to the ACL / transfer restrictions template). When requesting an AXFR by hand the Plesk server happily transfers the requested zone to the PowerDNS slaves, but upon changing the zone files through the Plesk panel's DNS management system, no notify goes out to the slaves, which thus don't know anything has changed. I've tried adding an also-notify clause to named.conf (which was suggested elsewhere), but it appears Plesk overwrites the entire named.conf upon zone changes, thus erasing the also-notify clause, subsequently refusing to send out a notify.
Further research into the workings of Bind (the nameserver used by Plesk in this setup) suggests that, by default, it should send notify messages to all servers listed in the NS records part of a given zone. This is clearly not the case in this particular setup, but I can't seem to find where exactly notify messages have been disabled (there is no mention of notify in named.conf).
My questions therefore are:
1) Why doesn't Plesk / Bind send automatic notify messages to its slaves, which is the default behavior of Bind? Where and how has this been disabled?
2) Should 1 turn out to be impossible to fix, how do I override named.conf on a per-domain basis?

I have several domains configured in my Plesk, and one of them is set as the "Detault site" under Home >> Tools & Setings > IP address management. This has the unpleasant side effect that any domain I point to this IP renders content from the Default site unless it's setup. How can I configure the default site to render content from only one domain?

I am looking for a replacement to my existing ISPConfig 3.x installation and have heard a lot of good things about Plesk, so I decided to put up a test server with a trial version of Plesk 12.The server is running Centos 6.5 64-bit minimal install with all system updates applied before installing Plesk. After installing Plesk I used the commands from the attached text-file.After compiling PHP 5.5.20 with no errors displayed on screen I created a new subscription plan as a copy of the #default domain" plan and changed the name to "PHP 5.5 website" and in the Hosting Parameters I changed PHP to run still run as a FastCGI application but use my compiled PHP 5.5.20 instead of the OS vendors PHP 5.3.3.The configure options used are the same as I did use for my ISPConfig 3.x servers.I also tried the configure options shown here: [URL]... But the command ends with a "configure: WARNING: unrecopgnized options: --enable-fastcgi"
If I compile with the attached script I get a HTTP 500 error when visiting the selected website (which is a clean installation of Drupal 7.34) and in the error_log for my test site I get this:
"
[Sun Dec 28 18:51:48 2014] [warn] [client x.x.x.x] (104)Connection reset by peer: mod_fcgid: error reading data from FastCGI server
[Sun Dec 28 18:51:48 2014] [error] [client x.x.x.x] Premature end of script headers: index.php
"
x.x.x.x is the internal IP of my router/firewall.I have also looked in the Plesk Administrator GuideIs there a known issue with Plesk 12 and CentOS 6.5 64-bit when wanting to use multiple versions of PHP, since both the version compiled using the KB article above and my own attached script worked fine on my ISPConfig 3.x servers.

I am relatively new in Plesk and have problems with mail not being sent properly. On the server, there is installed a WordPress installation. Mail from this WordPress installation never reaches for example suscribers. Almost all mail remains in the Queue and will be deleted after 7 days. Could it be because I do not have an SSL Certificate? I use:
Plesk 11.5
CentOS 6.6
postfix

According to [URL] .... The SOA-record is set to the first NS-record set in Plesk.
I have noticed that new domains get my secondary DNS set as SOA.
I checked the DNS-template and there the correct nameserver is on top. Maybe the NS-record order is random or always swapped. I just noticed this.
If it's always swapped then I could give the authorative NS last in my template...
But why isn't it giving itself as authorative?
If Plesk is configured as master it also implies this, or am I missing something there? It could at least make sure it puts itself first.

i have to delete all PTR records in over 80 domains in a Plesk 12 panel, when i tried to run the dns command to remove the PTR record from a domain, i got the error :
Code: Unable del record in DNS server: unable find DNS record ...
There is a KB article about this specific problem : [URL] .... , but it refers to older Plesk versions (8.x-10.x). I gave it a shot by copying the fix file from all 3 different versions to /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/api-common/ and i got the following PHP errors:
Code:
PHP Warning: include_once(class.PHostingManager.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory; File: /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/api-common/cuDns.php, Line: 4
PHP Warning: include_once(): Failed opening 'class.PHostingManager.php' for inclusion (include_path='/usr/local/psa/admin/plib:/usr/local/psa/admin/externals'); File: /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/api-common/cuDns.php, Line: 4
[URL] ......
Is there any workaround this PTR issue? Also, is Parallels going to update the article and provide solution for Plesk 12?

A customer wanted me to install the Google Apps MX records. However, it seems that they are not being created in Route53, at all.
Also if I delete the existing MX reccord the change does not reflect to Route53. Try to replicate?
Fact is that you've put this module in the catalog and would get in touch with you guys to tweak it to perfection as I think it can be a real USP for small hosters like me as this utilises the power of Amazons giant network yet you only have one server to take care of for all your regular hosting.
