Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Setting Up Master And Secondary DNS Servers

Jun 30, 2013

I have two VPS with two different Datacenters. I am running my website on one of the VPS which has Plesk Panel 11.5 installed on it. Since my second server is not in use, I would like to use it as a Secondary DNS Server for redundancy. I know this can be done with Plesk Expand. But, I am not in a position to invest further as I just run 4 domains on my main server. I was looking at installing some free control panel on my secondary VPS and set it up as a Secondary DNS Server if possible. But, I could not find any Guides on setting this up.

How I can do this? I see that we have an option in Plesk - 'Switch DNS Service mode' which can be used to either setup my first server as a Secondary or Primary. I have installed Webmin/Virtualmin on the second server, but how to set this up perfectly. I can reinstall the 2nd Server if required, but not my first one with Plesk.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: SOA-record Set To Secondary DNS

Mar 19, 2015

According to [URL] .... The SOA-record is set to the first NS-record set in Plesk.

I have noticed that new domains get my secondary DNS set as SOA.

I checked the DNS-template and there the correct nameserver is on top. Maybe the NS-record order is random or always swapped. I just noticed this.

If it's always swapped then I could give the authorative NS last in my template...

But why isn't it giving itself as authorative?

If Plesk is configured as master it also implies this, or am I missing something there? It could at least make sure it puts itself first.

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Hidden (Super) Master For A Domain

Jun 26, 2013

I've been trying to configure Plesk as a hidden (super) master for a domain and I've run into some problems.

First off, for those who don't know, a hidden master is a nameserver that is actually the master server, yet does not list in the NS records of the domain.

The servers listed as NS in the zone have accepted the server as their master, but the rest of the world does not know it exists. Hence the term hidden master. The slaves consist of two PowerDNS servers that acknowledge the Plesk server as a supermaster, thus enabling automatic zone configuration and the like upon receiving a notify from the Plesk server.

However, the Plesk server refuses to send automatic notify messages to the slaves (listed in the NS records, also added to the ACL / transfer restrictions template). When requesting an AXFR by hand the Plesk server happily transfers the requested zone to the PowerDNS slaves, but upon changing the zone files through the Plesk panel's DNS management system, no notify goes out to the slaves, which thus don't know anything has changed. I've tried adding an also-notify clause to named.conf (which was suggested elsewhere), but it appears Plesk overwrites the entire named.conf upon zone changes, thus erasing the also-notify clause, subsequently refusing to send out a notify.

Further research into the workings of Bind (the nameserver used by Plesk in this setup) suggests that, by default, it should send notify messages to all servers listed in the NS records part of a given zone. This is clearly not the case in this particular setup, but I can't seem to find where exactly notify messages have been disabled (there is no mention of notify in named.conf).

My questions therefore are:
1) Why doesn't Plesk / Bind send automatic notify messages to its slaves, which is the default behavior of Bind? Where and how has this been disabled?
2) Should 1 turn out to be impossible to fix, how do I override named.conf on a per-domain basis?

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Set Master NS (SOA) Record Properly (BIND Does Not Notify NS In SOA)

Oct 24, 2014

How to get plesk (12) to set the SOA record properly on existing domains?

Let me explain the issue first. We use PowerDNS supermaster mode as slave servers. The way this works is we configure PowerDNS so that it sees the plesk server as a so called supermaster.

When a so called supermaster notifies the slave servers on a zone update, if it doesn't exist it just adds the zone and pulls it in. This works very nice and without any scripting required (there's only the issue of removing them, I just have a script that deletes all domains that haven't been able to update in 2 weeks every day from the database).

The only issue here is that BIND does *NOT* ever notify the nameserver listed in the SOA. The nameserver listed in the SOA should be the master (and hence - thus plesk itself) and it being a master it should be where the changes occur and notifying it isn't necessary thus, which is why BIND doesn't do that.

Unfortunately plesk doesn't seem to grasp this concept. It will happily put any nameserver in the SOA record. Have adjusted the template and it seems to work ok for new domains now (not sure how reliably though), but it's a major pain for the existing ones. It's very hard to update them properly.

Reapplying template -> no change to master NS/SOA
Switching mode to slave and back to master -> no change to master NS/SOA
Resetting to default -> no change to master NS/SOA

The only way I've found so far is to delete the records manually, add them again and hope it doesn't change the order (yes it does this a lot, you'll have the correct order listed, click apply and the order just changes. Some times it adds them to the bottom of the list, some times to the top - not confusing at all).

Plesk really should be taught that if it's master, it should be the one in the SOA. Whilst my issue is larger due to the supermaster and slaves not creating the zone (and hence my slave not functioning), it is an issue in any setup because a slave listed as SOA will not be notified and doesn't pick up on the changes right away. Depending on the refresh times it might take quite some time for the slave to pick up the change then, which isn't desirable either as it will leave you with a slave that still returns incorrect records.

Secondary Servers

Jul 29, 2007

I just ran into something about Secondary DNS services.

What exactly is that?

Is that where if my primary name server goes down, a secondary name server kicks in and resolves all my donmains to another server somewhere?

I've been thinking about getting setup with some kind of fail safe setup in case my primary name server goes down.

Would Secondary DNS services take care of that?

If so, anybody know where I can find a reliable, affordable secondary DNS service?

DNS Servers Primary Secondary

Mar 22, 2007

clarification on DNS.

We currently have gps devices which report x,y coords. The devices currently report to a fully qualified name: servername.mydomain.com. And only one fully qualified name.

We would like to have redudancy, so if the main server goes down, then the secondary takes over. I assume this is accomblished via DNS.

So out first task is to create name servers at our domain registar and have them register them, for example:

ns1.mydomain.com -> FIRSTSERVERIP
ns2.mydomain.com -> SECONDSERVERIP

Then on the both servers we setup DNS to accept the a record of servename.mydomain.com points to? This is where I get confused. Does the firstserver DNS say point to itself, and the second DNS server point to itself?

Primary And Secondary Servers (web And Mail)

Jun 30, 2008

I have 2 servers 1 US and 1 UK.

What I wanna do is synchronize both of them using rsync. Once they've got synchronized, the UK will be the primary server and US will be secondary, in case the UK goes down.

my questions are

1. Is it possible that when the UK goes down, the A records for domain.com automatically switches to the US server so it can take over while UK is down.

ie. UK ip 112.113.114.1
US ip 222.111.444.5

domain.com A records = UK ip when up... but when UK is down, A records automatically changes to US ip.

2. And when the UK server goes up again, whatever changes made to US server will be pushed to UK. May it be files, accounts or e-mails.

I.E.

UK and US are synchronized every 30mins. UK and US both have e-mails 1-10.

Just before the sync time, UK server received an e-mail 11-15 then goes down. So the US Server will take over but do not have 11-15 mails, since it was received before sync time. During the UK downtime, US server received e-mails 16-20.

When the UK server goes up, will it be possible to sync both servers that both of them will have the e-mails 1-20?

I hope you get my point...

If these are not feasible, what can you advice as an alternative solution. All I want is to avoid downtimes, especially with mails as the business relies on this.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Fail2ban Setting Findtime Per Jail

Jul 14, 2014

In Fail2ban (great idea to include it in plesk!) settings you can set "Time interval for detection of subsequent attacks" (findtime) in general. But it would be interesting this setting per Jail.

You could have 2 jail with same filter but different findtime. Example:

Jail 1) 5 failures in 600 seconds: 1800 seconds ban
Jail 2) 30 failures in 86400 seconds: 604800 seconds ban

There are bots that detect if you have some protection fail2ban or similar and it will adapt, login attempt every 300 seconds for example. Jail 1 no detect this attack, but Jail 2 yes.

See the example, live time :
[root@--------- log]# cat /var/log/maillog | grep 'warning: ---------'

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Setting Up Separate Mail Accounts For Domain Alias?

May 6, 2014

I've got a situation in which I need to have a set of mail accounts that share a domain name with a domain that's already in use as a domain alias and because the domain is already in use, I'm unable to create a new account using that domain. I tried explicitly adding "www" to the domain alias so I could keep the www.domain.com address as an alias and reserve the "domain.com" name for use as a separate account, but Plesk won't allow for that.

How to address this? The idea I'm currently considering is to delete the domain alias and then create the new account and manually set the DOCUMENT ROOT of the new account to refer to the other domain's document root. I'm sure this could create some difficulty in Plesk so I'm looking for input before trying it. I'm actually not even sure exactly where I would be able to redefine the document root with Plesk allowing the change and not overwriting it later.

If all else fails, I can setup a new account on a different and unrelated Plesk server, but I'd prefer not to do that.

Plesk Automation :: Automated Secondary / Backup MX Server

May 8, 2014

It has been bought to my attention during our upgrade planning, that PPA & Plesk Panel do not offer the functionality for setting up a backup MX servers. In our current configuration we use Sendmail as both secondary and tertiary MX servers. These are manually configured and prone to configuration mistakes.

Multiple scenarios need to be taken into consideration.

Scenario 1: Hosters Plesk hosted primary mail server + secondary & tertiary mail servers.
Scenario 2: Client hosted primary mail server + hosters secondary & tertiary mail servers.

I am looking for alternate ways for backup / secondary MX servers for our planned PPA / Plesk deployment. An automated solution would be ideal, but we are falling short trying to find a solution to streamline the process and remove margin for error.
