Plesk 11.x / Linux :: FileShare Email Links Not Working With MSMTP Relay Only Mailserver
Jun 20, 2014
We were using the mailserver on our linux install, but have since changed over to an ms exchange server. With that I removed the mailserver and installed MSMTP relay only mailserver (SMTP client) option.
I configured the External SMTP Server settings under Tools & Settings / Mail with a valid email address password host name and port of 587. When I save it says settings saved.
Since doing this I have been unable to use the email link option for share files in the file share portion of my domain. When I try to select a user from the list to send the email to or even type an external email all I get is the error "Unable to send email".
When I checked the maillog file in /usr/local/psa/var/log, I get this error "Jun 20 15:42:59 u16271698 msmtp: host=smtp.1and1.com tls=off auth=on user=to@email.ca from=psaadm recipients=to@email.ca errormsg='cannot use a secure authentication method' exitcode=EX_UNAVAILABLE"
Where I have proper emails configured where I placed "to@email.ca"
How can I get this working with the MSMTP relay only mailserver (SMTP client) option installed?
I have Plesk 12 on CentOS 7. I have only MSMTP installed not Postfix or Qmail. No matter what settings I use in the external SMTP settings the mail is never sent and I cannot find any error logs.
I have tried gmail smtp, sendgrid smtp and another smtp server that I own.
This is not a firewall issue as far as I can tell since if I install postfix it just works. Also any Wordpress or Joomla installs that use SMTP settings with gmail or sendgrid work just fine.
Screenshot for information only. I used accurate usernames, passwords, etc.

Quick update. I tried the recommended CentOS 7 with the same result. Can installing Plesk 12 without a mail server and using the msmtp relay option actually works?Click to expand...
I have been having issues with spam on my mail server. I tested the server at abuse.net and test 6 fails with the following result:
Relay test 6 >>> RSET <<< 250 Reset OK >>> MAIL FROM:<spamtest@mydomain.com> <<< 250 OK >>> RCPT TO:<admin%abuse.net@mydomain.com> <<< 250 Accepted >>> DATA <<< 354 Enter message, ending with "." on a line by itself >>> (message body) <<< 250 OK id=1MGLZF-0002Jz-IZ
I have been trying for hours to close this hole with no success. I am running the server using cPanel / WHM which supposedly closes open relay by default, I have tried tweaking the settings,
I can receive email and check them via Horde but i'm unable to get them forwarded to my gmail account. Is there anything i can check/do ?I'm an ex-cpanel user.
I've just installed a Plesk 12 vServer and created a customer with a email adress. I took the informations shown in the Power-User-Panel under "emails" with the correct ports. After clicking on "finish" it shows that Thunderbird has a problem with a certificate from Plesk.
I don't want that this error message will be shown for customers. My primary domain of the vServer has a SSL-certificate. Could I use this primary-domain to avoid the error message (the server-adress would be different)? If I use the primary domain inside the server-adress Thunderbird will say "there is no email account on this server".
We set up a Plesk 12 server for web hosting purposes only.
All mail-related services, exception from "smtp server" and "Plesk milter" are disabled or uninstalled.
For specific domains, we want to prevent the useage of the php mail function with "localhost" to avoid problems with outgoing spam by unsecured scripts. Instead, we want to force webmasters to use external smtp servers.
Is there any directive or setting on domain-level that we allow for this limitation?
Just went through a migration and everything appeared to go pretty smooth, but we figured out there was an issue with symbolic links.
A site on an old server running plesk 12 had symbolic links in it. When the site is Migrated through the plesk migration tool, the symbolic links aren't preserved on the new server.
I'm using plesk with CentOS 6.6 and the postfix/courier mail services...I tried to connect an existing mail account with a mail program like thunderbird. But I'm not able to connect to it, except when I'm using "no connection security"...So I tried, if manually contacting the POP3s Port is working:
Code: openssl s_client -ssl3 -host mail.domain.de -port 995 with the following result:
Code: CONNECTED(00000003) write:errno=104 --- no peer certificate available --- No client certificate CA names sent
[code]....
the same results come for trying to connect to port 465 (ssmtp) and 993 (imaps)port 443 (https) seems to work fine..i already checked if the corresponding certificates exist (e.g. /usr/share/imapd.pem) and filled with the standard certificate informtaion given by plesk checking openssl on the server gives the following result:
Code: # openssl version OpenSSL 1.0.1e-fips 11 Feb 2013
I am testing out Plesk control panel 12 - looks promising, but the moment I hit chroot-ed environment, many things go wrong.
Set up:
Virutal server, running linux (64 bit Ubuntu 14.04 Server LTS); Plesk Control Panel 12.0.18, Update #14; Currently running on a trial license; Brand new installation on a dedicated server;
I have two disks, one is for system stuff, plus plesk; second disk is supposed to be dedicated to /var and /home
(to save place, I've removed the regular stuff that is everywhere and makes not difference for this case ... I think)
The plesk installation went just fine; update ran fine; I can register customers, their websites run fine ... as long as they get no shell at all, or regular shell to the server.
BUT: we need to jail all our customers under chroot. If that is not possible, we can't use Plesk.
I created a Service plan cloned form the Default domain plan and changed only to give the users ssh access to the server with a chroot env.
When I try to register a new client with this new service plan, it fails with lots of error messages (one per directory it tries to make), like this:
chrootmng: cannot set permissions for "/var/www/vhosts/demowh1.blah.blah/lib":Too many levels of symbolic links ... Dropping the GUI and xperimenting in a shell, as root: If I run: root@testthing:/usr/local/psa/admin/sbin# ./chrootmng --create --source=/var/www/vhosts/chroot/ --target=/var/www/vhosts/demowh1.blah.blah open_basedir_with_nofollow: opeat failed: `var', Too many levels of symbolic links
I changed the Plesk mailserver from Courier to Dovecot. All went good, but after the Install i can not see new E-Mails in my Inbox. Even the Search does not Work.
I can change the Mailserver again and use Courier. This works and i can see my emails. But only with Courier.
Some details:
Inbox has 100 E-mails. After scrolling down to the first emails, i can even see the newest email. But i have to scroll down and load all E-Mails.
Changing "Sort by" from "Date" to "Unread" all emails appear, even the latest. But changing to "Date" the newest email is missing again. Only a Number on my Inbox button shows me there has to be a new email in there.
The Open Xchange Team can not find any errors, the open xchange log looks good.
We are using Plesk 11.5 with postfix MTA. Spamassassin is working fine for incoming mails and leaves outbound mails unchecked - as it should.
Now there is one of my domains whose mails are relayed to another server (using postfix transport tab; mail support for this domain is disabled in plesk). For the moment, these mails arrive without beeing checked and marked by spamassassin. How could I change this? I have tried to register an additional mail-handler like
If there is a direct way to enable spam-control for relay domains, Otherwise I could still access spamassassin via postfix' config-files, but how to use two different implementation of spamassassin at the same time.
My hosting provider recently (and without any warning) decided to block outgoing connections to port 25. What this means is for any client/domain/email address that has a forwarder setup, the mail will never reach its destination because the connection to the other server always times out. The error logs look like this:
postfix/smtp[8414]: connect to ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM[74.125.131.26]:25: Connection timed out postfix/smtp[8421]: connect to aspmx2.googlemail.com[74.125.131.26]:25: Connection timed out postfix/smtp[8425]: connect to aspmx3.googlemail.com[64.233.186.26]:25: Connection timed out postfix/smtp[8423]: connect to aspmx4.googlemail.com[64.233.166.26]:25: Connection timed out
I haven't been able to find a way to force relay to 465. Or maybe I shouldn't have relay on at all and do this another way?
I'm having difficulty sending an email to another email address (with a different domain) which is on the same VPS.The trouble is, on the other domain's VPS control panel, within the DNS settings, the MX records have been pointed externally (to an exchange server). Their email is turned off. But bizarrely, their mailbox is full.
It seems as though Plesk is ignoring the MX records, and sending MY email internally to the OTHER domain's mailbox on the same VPS.How do I get Plesk to send my mail to the correct EXTERNAL MX records?
I have a domain with a few forwarding email accounts that forward to mac.com email accounts... for some reason every once in a while these accounts stop working...
This is the error I get when I email to that account:
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.
A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: ...
I send a few emails today and got a phonecall that people did not get my email. So I went into WHM and viewed "Top Email Relayers" There I saw my emails.
I am using WHM 11.11.0 cPanel 11.15.0
So what are Email Relayers?
How can I get my mails out of there so they can be send?
Occasionally when sending an email to an international address, I receive a rejected notice:
550 5.7.1 Relaying denied. IP name forged (PTR and A records mismatch) for (serverIP)
Nothing was changed anytime recently so I'm not sure why this would happen. How would I trace this type of error? Its a legitimate outgoing mail from my server to the intl recipient.
SPF has been set since day one and unchanged.
The mail server IP has rdns set to it and has been for a long time.
After installing a separate SSL to domain.com and www.domain.com, for some reason host.domain.com, which is the subdomain for plesk login, isn't being secured by FTP when choosing "Secure Plesk" after choosing the correct SSL. No error occurs, nor does the dashboard respond to it. It stays the same and unsecured. I tried rebooting server, restart services, etc.
I am unable to connect over TLS/SSL using my FTP client. I have ports 989 & 990 enabled in my server's firewall. My FTP client is attempting connection on port 990, but times out waiting for the server to respond. I also tried adding "TLSProtocol TLSv1" or "TLSProtocol SSLv3" to /etc/proftpd.conf, but get the same result, except that a non-TLS/SSL connection attempt then returns "server closed the connection".
Recently I configured parallels 12.x on Linode Cloud with cent OS. Using DNS Settings I added 'A' record (abc.example.com) as abc and point to IP. But the record is not propagated after 24-48hrs.
Configuration: Config server / Preferred domain for web sites / domain.tld Config hosting to domain / Preferred domain / domain.tld
Problem: I've created a primary domain.tld and work without problems I type www.domain.tld and work fine redirect to domain.tld format but I've created different alias and only work www.domain.tld format don't work domain.tld format.
In google webmastertools i see this error in domain.ltd panel
I have two servers with the exact same configuration, besides from the version of CentOS that they were running when I deployed Plesk using the autoinstall script. My first server was running CentOS 6.5 during Plesk installation. My second server was running CentOS 6.6. No 3rd part repos were installed before Plesk.
On the first server everything is fine, but on the second server I have issues with FTP. I have tried applying this fix: [URL] ....
Before applying the fix I got 530 Login incorrect when trying to connect to FTP. After applying the fix and restarting the entire server I got 550 /: permission denied
