Paid Hosting Taking 404 Error Traffic

Oct 23, 2009

HostGator is the only one I know of taking your 404 traffic by default. I have never experienced this with any other host I have used.

Personally it does not bother me much because I know how to change it simple. I'm a big fan of HostGator otherwise. They do provide a great service. I just find it weird your 404 page is a HostGator ad with a coupon code.

Is this a popular thing I have just never run into? I know it is the norm with free hosting providers.

HyperVM Backup Error Taking Too Long

Aug 10, 2008

It's been a while since I've made a backup in HyperVM but in the past I've had no problems. I decided to make a new one after so long, but when I did I got the error "no permission to make back up []". I contacted my provider to fix it, but it's been almost 24 hours and they still haven't gotten anywhere it seems. They even asked for my DA login information which I don't think is needed to fix the problem but I provided it anyways.

My question is, is this problem really that hard to fix? How would one fix it? Maybe I can just tell the provider how to fix it so I can get this done ASAP and then I can get back to using my VPS.

Unknown Company "Easy Web Hosting" Taking Over My Web Sites

Aug 14, 2008

I just received two e-mails which may be some new kind of phishing scam. Full text at bottom. The message describes the beginnings of a "site upgrade" for my web sites, but it's not from the company that does my hosting.

I received this for two sites that I have hosted with EZpublishing. I'm having terrible problems with EZpublishing; they lost most of my databases last Friday, have failed to respond to a trouble ticket, and phone calls divert to an answering service. I've filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. They may be going out of business and selling their remaining customers to another provider. So a message regarding migration to another host isn't unexpected.

But the message below looks phony. First, they know what my domains are, but they don't apparently have access to any of my customer account information.

Second, "easywebpublishing.com" doesn't have a live web site at it, just a sort of "coming soon" page. The WHOIS info for the domain shows ownership by "Internet Names for Business". "megawebservers.com", from which the email originated, is sort of a skeletal web site that looks like a hosting provider, but doesn't have any real info. "megawebhosting.com" WHOIS info shows "Moniker Privacy Services", which usually indicates a bottom-feeder if not a scam.

Anyone else see anything like this? .....

Hosting In Europe When Traffic Is US

Sep 20, 2007

I am about to set up a domain to build landing pages for PPC advertisements on, and maybe later a full fledged website. At the moment I have a shared hosting account in the Netherlands, that's where I'm from. Now I'm wondering if there will be any issues to consider when I send US traffic there.

I like the hosting company I am with now, they're cheap and they have good service, and I haven't found one is the US yet that offers the same so I'd rather stay with them if it's not necessary to switch.

Does it matter much when I host my site on a Dutch server?

How Much Traffic Can Shared Hosting Support

Apr 2, 2009

How much traffic can a typical $5/mo shared hosting account support?

A lot of them claimed "unlimited" bandwidth and storage. Of course there's no such thing as unlimited.

I have a site based on Python, Django, MySQL or Postgresql. It doesn't have any video or other bandwidth heavy elements, but the whole site is dynamic, each page takes about 5 to 10 DB query, 90% reads, 10% writes.

What kinds of traffic can a shared hosting account support for a site like that?

At stackoverflow.com, someone stated that a $5/mo shared hosting account can typically support 10-20,000 unique users per day or 100-200,000 pageviews/day. Does that sound about right?

Any recommendation for a good hosting company that'd suit my needs? My site will start small but hopefully will ramp up quickly. I'd like a hosting firm that can support that growth.

Hosting A High Traffic Site

Jul 10, 2008

We expect a site on one of our boxes to receive a significantly high level of traffic tomorrow as it is an event that will be covered and has already been covered by the press. The site operator expects > 100,000 hits a second.

It's a PHP page that pulls records from a database and lets people submit a form to insert a record. We have already put a caching script in place so that refreshing the page does not result in doing another database query.

The site was overloading a shared server, and we've moved it to one of our VPS boxes - it's the only VPS on the system at the moment. The box is a Quad Xeon 5410 with 4GB RAM with a 4 10K RPM drives in a RAID5 setup.

Traffic Accounting Packages For Dedicated Hosting

Oct 31, 2006

Can anyone give me some recomendations of some traffic accounting packages?

I'm looking for something that drives the backend stats you get as a customer when you login to your Dedicated Server providers control panel. Traffic graphs / total throughput stats etc

The obvious way to do this is to ping the switch ports and generate graphs and stats using RRD tool. The other way to do it would be to mirror the external switch port and generate stats from there (this would discount 'internal' traffic between boxes, although there will be a seperate private LAN for this).

We can obviously roll our own, but to save on man hours are there any out the box packages (open source or otherwise) to generate the graphs, traffic levels and dump it all out in a nice customer friendly report (i.e not something like Cacti).

In other words, what does everyone else use...or is it a case that everyone has based the backend on mrtg / rrdtool and built their own reporting lauyer ad-hoc on top?

Creating A High Traffic Hosting Setup

Oct 3, 2008

creating a setup that will host a site which is expected to receive 50-60K visitors in the first few hours after its launch. The site is membership based and the backend (member system) runs on PHP5-MySQL5.

Here is what I have thought of until now.

Site's sales page (which also happens to be the first page that visitors hit) hosted with Amazon S3 service. All public media files are off loaded to amazon S3 service to keep the number of requests on the hosted setup to minimum.

At the front we can have a high performance firewall like Cisco ASA 5520 followed by two dedicated load balancers in Active/Active state.

Behind the load balancers we have 3 front end servers acting as web-servers. These have SAS disks, 4GB RAM, RAID 1 setup, Dual Xeon Quad core processors each.

Behind the front end servers - we have a dedicated load balancer for the database cluster.

The database cluster consists of 3 Storage/API nodes and one of the front end servers acts as the management node. Each storage node has 8GB RAM, Dual Xeon Quad core processors, 4x RAID 10, SAS setup.

The private network is on a GigaLan.

Do you see any possible/obvious flaw in this design or anything that should be added/subtracted from the setup?

Hosting For Corporate Site (low Traffic, Uptime Important)

Nov 2, 2007

i work for a small but fairly successful and quickly rising company. we're looking for hosting for our corporate site. we could host it ourselves but that would put an extra burden on engineering and we're stretched pretty thin as it is. we moved to bluehost on my recommendation. i've been using them for 2 years now and never had a problem. unfortunately less than two days after we switched the server is now down. it's been down for over 4 hours now and we've blown past several estimated times from tech support. i know this is a rare thing but it doesn't look good and i don't think the higher ups much want to stay with them. so here's some info about our site. requires SSI, CGI, Perl 5.8+ with Perl DBI 1.32+ and Perl DBD::Mysql > 2.1021+ Perl Modules, ImageMagick 6.0.6+ Perl Module or GD Perl Module (GD.pm 2.17+), PHP 5. small traffic with occasional spikes. approx 200 uniques daily. occasional spikes if we happen to show up in the news. we do have the possibility of showing up in all major US news outlets. it's happened once before which resulted in almost 1,000 uniques which quickly tapered back off to normal levels. we're currently using 154MB of disk space and 8GB of bandwidth last month. we need multiple ftp accounts to allow marketing and contract web devs to upload their own files. probably around 10 or so would be adequate. email not required. we have a hosted exchange server. uptime and quick response to server outages important. being a corporate site and not our application downtime isn't truly horrible but it is perceived as such. this site is our identity. we're a tech company and it looks bad when our corporate site is down. even when our application isn't.

High Traffic Hosting Solution (dedicated Server?)

Jul 23, 2007

I'm working on launching this online store for a poster designer, and we're becoming more and more aware that we need a really robust and fast server. This site is looking at extremely high levels of activity whenever this designer posts a new poster. We're talking 1700 people surfing the store (downloading med-high resolution poster images) and 300 posters sold in 16 seconds kind of thing.

So, we need a really robust hosting, to work with PHP5 and MYSQL.

My previous go-to hosting provider was Lunarpages, but their customer service has gone down the crapper, and I've just about had it with them. My main questions are:
Should I be looking into getting a dedicated server, or are there hosting companies that can handle this kind of traffic on a shared server? I don't have experience administrating a server, so if we got a dedicated one we would have to pay the host to do at least some of the setup/administration, I would assume?
Dedicated server or not, what's a hosting company that has really good customer service, where we can be assured of getting somebody knowledgeable without having to wait on hold for 20 (or even 10) minutes?

Setting Up VPN Internet Tunneling, Paid Support

Nov 3, 2007

I am trying to set a vpn system up on a windows 2003 server, that will tunnel my and some friends internet thru it, making it secure encrypted esspecially when using unsecure devices using wifi.

we tried this on a test server with 1 network card, we manage to setup the vpn and loggin, but we cannot manage to get our internet thru it.

That is basically the most important to it, we dont want local server harddisk access or anything, just to get our internet thru the vpn so it is secure and encrypted.

The test box had 1 network card, and if we take a cheap server for this purphose it will probably have 1 card also.

Who can help us achieve this and explain us how for future refernces ? We are willing to pay a fee.

Infinitie.net - No Service, Beyond Slow, Refuses To Refund Money Paid

Jul 28, 2007

I signed up with service from infinitie.net after seeing an offer they had on this link [url]

This was on July 21st about 8PM EST. Link above states "PLEASE ALLOW UP TO 2 HOURS FOR YOUR NEW VPS ACCOUNT ACTIVATE ONCE ORDERED."

First reply took 8hrs, second 9hrs, third 5hrs, and to this date I haven't heard back from them since Jul 23, 2007 2:32 PM EST.

Incomplete login details were issued on Jul 23, 2007 2:32 PM EST. However, message stated "CPanel is finalizing its install and will be complete in 2 hours." I immediately asked them to please advise when setup is complete on Jul 23, 2007 2:56 PM EST. After not hearing anything back I decided to cancel and emailed request at Jul 24, 2007 2:54 PM EST.

I have a couple services I'm happy with elsewhere. I more or less just wanted to separate an account and see what other options were out there. I wasn't bothered by the fact setup was slow. The main issue was if they take this long to reply and handle simple issues prior to setup, what happens if I'm setup one day and there is a more serious issue? Since initial cancel request I attempted to contact them on several other occasions by both direct email and their ticket system. I never received a response other then the standard automatic "Thank you for writing to Infinitie's Support Team."

I have disputed transaction with paypal today. At a last attempt I emailed infinitie.net yesterday and told them unless refund was issued this is action I would be forced to take. No response so I proceeded. I will update and let you all know how this turns out.

LiquidWeb Not Taking New Customers

Oct 9, 2009

I'm currently considering a host change, so I'm putting out feelers to potential candidates. As always, I'm putting on my difficult customer mask (turning down my rationality and patience module) to find out if the host can actually handle real-life customers (one of the things I find most important and that I don't want to find out once the server is already on fire). Most companies pass the test very well. Here's how LiquidWeb handles new customers:

Quote:

MY SITUATION: I'm a do-it-yourself webmaster who has been managing his own server for years. It's become a curse though because managing your own server means you have to be online virtually every day. I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to be offline for several weeks (a REAL vacation, something I haven't had in a decade), knowing that whatever major issue there is with my sites, someone will take action and make sure the service stays available.

- Last year, I've switched to my first managed solution, but as it turns out, they're not doing what I need. Yesterday, for example, I came home to find my sites offline. The site was unavailable for over 40 minutes, and after asking about it I learned that they didn't take action because the server wasn't quite dead yet, only really, really, really slow. To me, this is hairsplitting, the only thing that matters is whether or not my site is available to visitors. - And once the service has been restored, I would also expect a managed host to figure out what caused the issue, and to propose a solution (or just implement one, e.g. change the mysql configuration) so that a similar issue won't happen anymore under the same circumstances.

- If my sites are unavailable due to a fatal error (e.g. a table needing repairs, or max users reached, "can't connect" or whatever else) I would also expect my managed host to catch it on their own, restore things to normality, and possibly think of ways to keep similar issues from happening in the future.

- If my site suffers a DOS attack, I would expect a managed host to think about how my site can be protected.

And so on.

- My largest database tables are 2.5 GIGs in size, but the /tmp disk my host configured has only 600 MB available, so everytime I perform a major operation (even if it's about slimming it down and running an OPTIMIZE afterwards) everything goes down the crapper (/tmp 100% full and load average shooting up to 200). Seems like the fact that /tmp is 100% full doesn't even trigger any alarms with my host, they send the alert to me, and expect me to contact them and ask for a fix. - When I needed to run a business-critical script that keept failing due to the small /tmp, it was me who reconfigured mysql so that it would temporarily use another partition for /tmp - no suggested solution from the host whatsoever. Not good at all.

- I would also like to see a host being able to learn from past incidents. This would require the host admitting though when they made a mistake, or gave the wrong advice. A host not admitting mistakes means that they will not learn, and will therefore keep making the same mistakes all over again (for the client that's a horrible outlook).

- I also think it's embarrassing if a host tells the client that fixing a certain issue is beyond the scope of their support, if it turns out afterwards that the issue happened because of some update done by the host. If in doubt, the host should always provide assistance.

- And if an issue does go beyond what can be expected from managed hosting, it would be the icing on the cake if the host could offer to fix it anyway, possibly against a fee. Such a situation could occur if a major site error is due to a broken script that was provided by the client. ("Looks like your script blah.php is causing the fatal error, we can look into it but this will likely take X hours and cost you Y USD.") Again, the ultimate goal for me is to be able to be offline for several weeks at a time, knowing that any major interruptions to my sites can be resolved without me.

- I would also appreciate a system that will allow trusted site members to report issues - i.e. one where I can give users the ability to report problems without at the same time giving them the privilege to push any red buttons that may damage my site.

So in a nutshell I'm trying to figure out if Liquid Web is the right hosting solution for me. Please let me know if your hosting philosophy meets me needs (and don't hesitate to let me know if it doesn't ).

Thanks!

THE BAD NEWS:
- Even if it's a one-time emergency, you are paid extra and not providing help would ruin the client's business because the client is currently in a thunderstorm in the middle of the Atlantic, it is not possible to convince Liquid Web support to fix a fatal error that may have been triggered by a programming error in one of the client's scripts.
- Although Liquid Web's server monitoring is called "Sonar" it is - in practice - just as slow as the one I've described in my intitial mail (because if it was any better, you would have told me by now how LW would have handled the given example differently).
- Even if all my sites are down because your staff has misconfigured mysql to break under heavier traffic, or because one of the tables crashed, Liquid Web's staff will do nothing until notified because as long as the mysql service itself is up, you don't see any reason to intervene (if this is something you'd care about and fix, I'm sure you would have let me in on it by now). - EDIT: Or wait - you guys are installing mySQL but you're not configuring/tweaking it so it actually works for the client? Not sure, seems like I actually have to *guess* on that one.

- Liquid Web's ticket system cannot provide sub-accounts with lesser privileges (because if it could, you would have advertised it to me).

- When Liquid Web sets up new servers, /tmp is below 1 gigabyte as well, and when this causes issues, it is definitely not Liquid Web's fault (because if you would be handling this any differently, you would have pointed it out).

- Liquid Web has too many customers already, which is why even customers who know what they want aren't told what they can get, but instead receive links to canned information that doesn't answer their questions, along with the info that Liquid Web probably isn't for them anyway.

- Generally you're in a hurry and can't spend more than 5 minutes on the average ticket.

THE GOOD NEWS:

- LiquidWeb offers DoS protection (I had missed that, but see it clearly now).

Hope there was nothing I missed. So - thanks for all the extensive information you gave me (and sorry for using up so much of your precious time), I will make sure to honor it when I reach my decision.

No further replies.

Anyone know what's wrong with these people? Are they full, or do they only take on easy customers who need nothing?
