Setting Up VPN Internet Tunneling, Paid Support

Nov 3, 2007

I am trying to set a vpn system up on a windows 2003 server, that will tunnel my and some friends internet thru it, making it secure encrypted esspecially when using unsecure devices using wifi.

we tried this on a test server with 1 network card, we manage to setup the vpn and loggin, but we cannot manage to get our internet thru it.

That is basically the most important to it, we dont want local server harddisk access or anything, just to get our internet thru the vpn so it is secure and encrypted.

The test box had 1 network card, and if we take a cheap server for this purphose it will probably have 1 card also.

Who can help us achieve this and explain us how for future refernces ? We are willing to pay a fee.

Setting Up An Internet Connection On Server 2003

Jun 14, 2008

I have just started studying to get my MCSE certification; however, I have hit a road block early on. I am trying to start an internet connection to so i can use "configure Your Server Wizard". The internet connection is live ( I tested it on my vista tower).

Here is a some information of my setup. I am running 2 towers with server 2003 ( both are stuck with no internet) one tower with vista. I have a cable modem to a router. The router is supplying 3 ethernet cords to my 3 towers. I am using comcast for internet.

All I need right now is a basic connection to the internet so i can go further with training book one.

Here is my ipconfig/all dump from the vista tower that can connect to the internet:

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) Setting Up On CPanel Box With FreeBSD

Jun 7, 2005

Setting up an IRC/cPanel box with freeBSD

Well this "guide" if you like, doesn't really have a purpose, it both shows you how to setup a basic irc box (just installing oidentd), its mainly targeted towards installing cPanel on freeBSD.

I used freeBSD 5.4-RELEASE so you might not encounter problems I did.

firstly login to your server and we will just install cpanel straight away.

mkdir /home/cpins
cd /home/cpins
wget http://layer1.cpanel.net/latest
sh latest
This will take awhile so go grab a coffee. This will install everything for cPanel.

Once this is complete, go to WHM

http://yourip/whm

and login with username root and your root password. Now you will be prompted with the WHM setup screen. This is really simple, just follow the onscreen instructions to setup whm. This will setup your server hostname, resolvers, nameservers and so on.

Once this is done, you have done it. You have installed cPanel, but don't get your hopes up just yet. No doubt there will be bugs, you are best to search google but I will go over what ones I encounter. If I do that is.

So straight off I am going to go test the account creation, go to Create A New Account in WHM, and input any domain you want, for my example I just put google.com. After I hit created it created the account but returned a bind error. So we have to fix this first ....

Tunneling With A VPS To A NAT

May 18, 2009

my provider offers me a 10 mbit connection, but no public ip. This way, if I have a network printer behind my connection, I can't reach it.

From my understandings, if I have a VPS with a public IP, I could use it to open a tunnel with my local network printer using openVPN, and then reach the VPS to print from anywhere.

I made an example with a network printer, but it could be an FTP, a workstation, ... and all the nice things you could do with a beauty like a 10 mbit connection.

Controlling SSH Tunneling

Jul 11, 2009

I am thinking about setting something up that will allow an ssh user to tunnel through the server to view certain sites. However, I want the user who tunnels in to be allowed to view only certain sites, and not all sites.

I figured I could set this up through IP tables, however, if I block all outbound sites, so goes the tunneled user. Is there a way to keep the tunnel alive while blocking all traffic outbound besides a named website, say google.com for example? The users tunneling in will have different IPs, so, I cannot use that to allow the outgoing connections. The only thing I have thought of would be to somehow allow an active connection to be able to receive outbound traffic, if they have already been connected, but, I am unsure if iptables can be set up this way.

Anyone set something like this up before, or perhaps, could point me in the right direction.

OpenSSH Tunneling

Aug 1, 2008

I'm having difficulty setting up tunneling, and I was hoping someone might have some insight. My current setup works just fine if the starting computer is not located behind its own proxy. But I cannot get the connection to work from a corporate LAN, which will be necessary when I'm on premises and need to get out. I've been switching to Verizon wifi when I need various ports, but this is a bad solution due to speed.

So, I have OpenSSH setup on the computer in my home office. It's setup on port 443, and it uses my main login user and pass to accept connections. I have a .bat file that triggers the following command in PuTTy when I run it:

putty -D 8080 -P 443 -ssh xx.xxx.xxx.xxx

The connection works just fine. I can log in, see my computer structure list directories, manipulate files, etc. Wonderful.

I have a browser set up to connect using SOCKS5. Over my wifi (with no corporate firewall), this works great. When I check my IP at www.ipchicken.com (my personal fave), it gives me my home office IP, just like it should. However, when I switch to corporate LAN, the connection to my PC remains active, but I cannot tunnel out past that point. The corporate LAN is using ISA Server (WINP - 8080).

I've read a couple tutorials on how to get the corporate proxy to play nice with OpenSSH, but I can't seem to get it to work, no matter what I try. Is there something big I'm missing here? What more info can I post to help get me to the right answer?

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Setup VPM Tunneling - Access Samba Share From Server

Aug 18, 2014

I have a rented VPS with 2TB of disk space and a plesk license in order to host the sites that i develop and my sites, and found myself with around 1.8TB of free space, plesk samba management and plesk vpn management but with few missing pieces for my idea. My idea was to setup vpn tunneling between my laptop and desktop to plesk server and access samba share from the server like they were in my LAN.In the firewall I have opened only the classic mail and web ports (obviously plesk access too).

A month later, I am still being charged the subscription fees by paypal. Confused, I decided to look into the matter and found out that my paypal subscription to DotXM is still not canceled. I did not have a single clue that I have to cancel my subscription to DotXM in paypal too.

I have tried emailing DotXM owner several times with no reply. Shouldn't an ethical business person refund my money in this situation?

Paid Hosting Taking 404 Error Traffic

Oct 23, 2009

HostGator is the only one I know of taking your 404 traffic by default. I have never experienced this with any other host I have used.

Personally it does not bother me much because I know how to change it simple. I'm a big fan of HostGator otherwise. They do provide a great service. I just find it weird your 404 page is a HostGator ad with a coupon code.

Is this a popular thing I have just never run into? I know it is the norm with free hosting providers.

Paid Server Monitoring + Sms + Sending Notification To SoftLayer

Jan 4, 2009

As described in the title I need a paid monitoring service which provides sms alerts and tells SoftLayer immediately so they can investigate the issue and make what needed to bring the server online.

I like hyperspin.com service but it looks there is no way to send SoftLayer an automated notification because there is a need to open a ticket.

I can't be attendant at my office 24 hours so I need this service which alerts me with sms about the fail and simultaneously tells my provider so my server will not be down for a long time.

Infinitie.net - No Service, Beyond Slow, Refuses To Refund Money Paid

Jul 28, 2007

I signed up with service from infinitie.net after seeing an offer they had on this link [url]

This was on July 21st about 8PM EST. Link above states "PLEASE ALLOW UP TO 2 HOURS FOR YOUR NEW VPS ACCOUNT ACTIVATE ONCE ORDERED."

First reply took 8hrs, second 9hrs, third 5hrs, and to this date I haven't heard back from them since Jul 23, 2007 2:32 PM EST.

Incomplete login details were issued on Jul 23, 2007 2:32 PM EST. However, message stated "CPanel is finalizing its install and will be complete in 2 hours." I immediately asked them to please advise when setup is complete on Jul 23, 2007 2:56 PM EST. After not hearing anything back I decided to cancel and emailed request at Jul 24, 2007 2:54 PM EST.

I have a couple services I'm happy with elsewhere. I more or less just wanted to separate an account and see what other options were out there. I wasn't bothered by the fact setup was slow. The main issue was if they take this long to reply and handle simple issues prior to setup, what happens if I'm setup one day and there is a more serious issue? Since initial cancel request I attempted to contact them on several other occasions by both direct email and their ticket system. I never received a response other then the standard automatic "Thank you for writing to Infinitie's Support Team."

I have disputed transaction with paypal today. At a last attempt I emailed infinitie.net yesterday and told them unless refund was issued this is action I would be forced to take. No response so I proceeded. I will update and let you all know how this turns out.

First Paid Host - Which Host To Chose

Dec 12, 2007

I have just made a personal website using photoshop, html, css and php. My site contains an index page, a gallery page with 8 photos, a contact page with a form and an extra page with some quotes. I am planning to use a paid host for the first time. Based on feedbacks from some of my sitepoint friends, I decided to go in for shared hosting. I thought of using Hostdogs.com as they have the option of a monthly billing cycle. I thought that I have the option of changing my host after a month if I am not happy with them. I have also read a lot about Hostgator.com. A lot of sitepoint members seem hooked to it.

1. Can anyone give an opinion as to which host I should go in for? Hostdogs also give a free domain. Is there any reason I should go in for Hostgator instead of Hostdogs?

2. One more question, I have heard that once I have a site running, I can earn money through the advertisements placed on it? How do I place advertisements on my site?

3. One last and very important question is whether it is right to go in for shared hosting at this point of time. I just read this

Quote:

When you look for a suitable host, be sure to check out the amount of bandwidth that will be available to your site. Even a site that doesn't require a great deal of data transfer per month could run slowly if you're hosted on a shared server; particularly if you are on the same server as a more popular or bandwidth-intensive site.
The more sites hosted on a server, the more likely they are to compete with each other for available resources, including bandwidth. This is why you may notice a reduction in server response times during busy periods, or during a sudden peak in traffic at a busier site on a server that you share.

This made me wonder whether I should go in for shared hosting. But then mine is a personal home page which may not have so much of traffic.

4. What does the paragraph below mean? How does one handle ones registration manually?

Self-Management (no cost)
Select this option if you prefer to handle your registration manually.Your web host can establish service with any Top-Level Domain (TLD), international or domestic.

Softlayer Support Vs Theplanet Support

Jul 12, 2008

I'm undecided between an upcoming dedicated hosting server and am moving between Softlayer and ThePlanet. My decision partly comes down to support.

I've read many reviews on WHT about both companies, but not necessarily comparing them from people who have experienced both.

So my questions (keep in mind this is my first dedicated. I have used VPS in the past with good support) Which offers MORE support (not better) - I'm curious which company might consider my support questions as "part of the default service package" or "need additional service plan for that" More detailed support - my usual experience with support is support staff assume you already know a high level so it may take going forward and back 5 times via email to get a full answer
Overall support satisfaction - any other comments

I've been with Hivelocity for 2 years. Occasionally we have problems, but it works. Their support staff can do very simple things relatively fast, however if you have some serious problems, e.g. failed disk and need to be replaced and do restoration from backup, it will be hell!

They will NOT do what asked in Reload Request, delayed answer to chat, no answer to tickets for many hours.

So far I'm very disappointed of Hivelocity support.

TurnKey Internet

I recently placed an order (based on an add I found while browsing this forum) for a quad xeon. Everything went smoothly and their live support was very helpful. About 2 hours after receiving my confirmation I received an email containing a credit card form. The form is asking me to fill out everything I filled out during the billing process (including my credit card number, security code, and bank number). I know this form is basically a contract so they can bill me if I go over my bandwidth limit, but it seems pretty odd. Is this a normal thing or should I be weary about filling this out?

Solid Internet

Sep 14, 2009

My site/e-mail/etc that is hosted by Solid Internet has been down for almost 2 weeks. This is causing me some major problems.

Their support forum doesn't work, their phones go straight to voicemail, their voicemail inbox is full, they don't respond to e-mails or support tickets. I'm not sure what else I can do to find out what the problem is?

I've only just renewed for a further year too so I'm not overly keen on flushing all that money down the toilet.

I don't think I have any site back ups, certainly no recent ones so I don't want to lose everything which I assume I'll need to do to move to a new host?

Vps @ TurnKey Internet

Jan 17, 2009

first off i will start by saying, as you can see.. this is my first post. Normally i just browse around, but i had to sign up and post a brief thread, about the awesome service i have received over at TurnKey.

A few weeks before christmas break, i signed up with Turnkey VPS, which was quickly setup. I've never really worked with a vps before, or much with servers at all really.

But their prompt and detailed explanation of how things work inside the control panel really helped me out. Then, a week after christmas break, with the economy going south, i had got laid off from work. I sent them an email saying that i wished to cancel cause of my current job status, and was suprised to see that Adam, their president had emailed me back himself and offered me a 90 day free run till i could get back on my feet. and if at the end of the 90days i hadent got on my feet, i could cancel completly. Since then, my job had announced that it would only be set backs and not termination - so i still have my job, and i dont have to cancel anymore!

Wholesale Internet

Wholesale Internet HAS THE WORST BILLING SYSTEM / CUSTOMER SUPPORT SYSTEM EVER
It has been 3 months and I have yet received my refund. If your server is up then its fine but I have contacted Aaron (great guy) 30+ times but he's always busy

Here's the issue. In ubersmith we have paypal + a spare credit card running. I setup a paypal subscription so I was to be billed automatically.

Ubersmith however was not tracking the subscription payments and instead billed our credit card.

This left me with double the charges for 3 months on my credit card and paypal ...

I have asked for a refund since September and have heard NOTHING.

I have vouched for Wholesale internet plenty but if this does not get taken care of Aaron I will be chargebacking every single charge for the last year ... maybe that'll get your attention

The billing department = Rebecca - a woman who neither answers the phone nor emails

Wholesale Internet ..

Jul 25, 2008

We aquired a dedicated with wholesaleinternet a few months back. Other than slightly annoying but very short periods of downtime several times a week there were no major problems. Then the server became unreachable.

After many hours I finally get a tech response to my priority TT stating a fsck had to be performed. My initial worry was that the HD was failing as huge sectors should not be corrupt - certainly no software was running to cause this.

Over the next 2 weeks the server went down every 24-48 hours with exactly the same problem and the same resolution. Each time it took over 4 hours for a priority TT to be responded to and for the problem to be fixed. 8 hour waits were far from uncommon.

After pointing out the HD worries several times (what else could it be at this stage?) 2 weeks later the girl 'looking after the problem' finally agrees with us and agrees to replace the HD. I drag off any data I need (ie since the last backup) in a brief period of uptime and give her the go ahead. The server goes down again and over 48 hours later they tell me a new HD has been installed.

BEFORE the server went down for the final time we made it very clear that we simply cannot wait any longer and had no choice but to cancel our account. This was ignored and the HD changed anyway. We also made it clear that the huge problems caused should mean that there was no way we should require a month's notice to leave them. The downtime, huge delays in responding to priority tickets and inability of tech staff to recognise a simple HD failure means we need to go elsewhere. The downtime has cost us a LOT of money and several very good google results still have not recovered so the cost to us continues in a big way.

Despite the 2 weeks of more or less continual downtime causing us to have no choice but to switch hosts they now have the audacity to send debt collectors after us for not giving 1 months notice. On cancelling the account my reasons were made very, very clear and that given the situation I would not expect to need a months notice and certainly not to be charged.

So my advice...look elsewhere. There are some very professional companies about with competent tech staff and who give a damn about even their lower end customers.

BQ Internet Corp.

Mar 28, 2008

I have used BQ Internet (bqbackup) for a dedicated server backup for months... On one occasion a while back, I started getting the now infamous "out of space" error message.

They fixed it, that time, fairly quickly telling me it was because they were "changing servers..."

Now, for the last two weeks, their server is telling me it's outta space, and I am getting absolutely no response from them whatsover...

I have sent emails using my regular email accounts plus sent emails using a gmail account.

Are they in some sort of trouble or something?

I guess I am going to have to look for another rsync backup provider...

"Offsite" backups are extremely important to me and my customers, and not having it available for two weeks is completely unacceptable.

Wholesale Internet

I've been with wholesale internet services for a few months now and I must say working with Aaron (when available) has been a pleasure. However, working with anybody else on the team...Billing Departement I'm looking at you has been a COMPLETE Nightmare.

I orderded an extra IP Subnet range only to take it days (more than three) and a few tickets later to order. Their Billing/Sales department takes days to answer.

I then cancelled my services and was confirmed cancellation only to find out today that I've been billed and my credit card has been charged.

Not impressed with this incompetent operation. Aaron you do a great job but your team is nothing like you! I have yet to receive an e-mail back from sales about refunding me the money for the current billing statements.

I'm creating yet another ticket now in hopes that somebody there responds.

The server was fine as was the network, never had any issues, but the lack of support for billing was not.

Wholesale Internet

Aug 28, 2008

I decided to let everyone know about WholesaleInternet (wholesaleinternet.net) company and how people from this company treat clients.

2 days ago my server was taken offline. After contacting support team, I was told someone was hosting phishing page. However, they didn't send me any email. I asked them to send abuse report for me.

As soon as I got it, I told that I will remove bad site from server as soon as they will activate server. Since then they just ignore all my tickets. Server is down for 2 days, I have opened support ticket and all my requests are ignored. Phone support is total 'scam', because I always here same message 'We can not answer your call' for 2 days.

I understand this company is being managed by single person only, but I didn't believe it's so awful.

My server is still down, and I have no idea what to do next. They even don't allow me to remove bad site or move all sites from server to another provider.

And yes, I also PMed Aaron via this forum, but he just replied 'Abuse has the impression that you are intentionally using the server for illegal activities. I looked at the ticket and I can see why they think that especially when you tell them you will move the phishing site to another server.' Then he started ignoring all my messages too.

What abuse team!? Company of single person has abuse team? Sure... I can't believe that moving site to other server (after removing phishing content from it) is treated as illegal activity by Wholesale Internet.

Well, I lost hundreds of dollars already, and it looks I need to start everything from 0 (because company just ignores me), so the only thing I can do - tell everyone RUN AWAY from this awful provider as soon as you can. Because if someone will hack one of your customer accounts and upload phishing page, they will destroy your hosting without any questions asked.

I will post more detailed review about this company later, including screenshots from my support desk, etc. So if you think getting a server with them, think again!

Internet Network

Nov 17, 2007

I am about to build the company network and I have some questions to know what I am speaking about with the company we will hire to do the job, so I would like to ask some questions, being sure here someone skilled will be able to help me.

The current company network is made of two optical fiber with each one it’s own router and ISP behind. I am thinking about to take a third ISP and ask for our own /24 PI, rather than current two /25 PA we have with each provider.

I would like to setup a highly available Internet link. Most probably I will ask a third provider to offer us the /24 PI and use it as main provider and use the two others to feed and to help us to reach high availability as BGP4 is able to balance over different networks.

It is not impossible to tweak performances later with OSPF protocol. The total maximum (theoretical) speed would be 150 Mbit/s for the 3 links together (but pushing as it will probably never happend), current peaks are more about 30-35 Mbit/s.

So I have some questions :
- Do we need to get an AS to achieve this?
- Is Foundry Networks NetIron NETIRON MLX-4 or NETIRON MLX-8 good for this job?
- Will we be able to push (in case) up to 300-400 Mbit/s with this wheel (over 3 providers)?
- What is the approximate price of such wheel?
- What else do I have to think about?

At this time, I am only interested about the Internet network. The prority is the availability and not the speed, but it would be good to do not have to change machines if the average traffic to Internet is going to double in 1 year.
