Converting A Dedicated Server Into A Flash Media Server
May 10, 2009
I am going to be buying a dedicated server from kimsufi Most likely the 2XL Package.
My streamers will be using my server aswell, On weekends we will be running 3-4 streams at a time, weekdays 1-2 at a time.
Spreading all the streams out, at anyone time we will have 300 viewers.
I need to know your advice on this before i go spending money.
How do i convert my dedi into a flash media server, i need red5 or something, thats all i know so far. My streamers wil be streaming to server with FME, And i also want it coded so that my streams can only be embedded on my site.
Basically i dont have a clue where to start, how long would it take me to set up etc....
In addition, what kind of server do i need, windows / linux / traffic / burstable / standard etc..

I am thinking about making a web site that streams HD movies and videos that I have created myself. I was wonder could you use Adobe Flash Media Interactive Server 3.5 to do so I know i would have to buy a dedicated server and a fast one with a good load of bandwidth. The big question am asking is that can you base a website or content management system around the interactive server.

Don't have much experience with dedicated servers, Just wanted your opinions on this.
Quote:
100Mbit Burstable Unmetered Dedicated Server #1
CPU - Pentium E5200 (dual core)
Memory - 2GB RAM
Hard Disk Space - 300GB HDD
According to the package, it's " 100Mbit Burstable Unmetered Dedicated Server "
I plan on hosting only media, (video files). Are these specs enough to support alot of people downloading?
Also, I've never setup this sort of server before - when I go to click on order now it asks me certain preferances.
Quote:
Raid Controller, OS version, Operating system, Control Panel
There is quite a few options to choose from the drop down menu, I have no idea what they mean.
With dedicated server's is it the same as normal vps? Login, upload, Cpanel etc?
Or is there something else to it?
Just need to host media - nothing special.

Uvault.com does flash streaming media, features unlimited connections, and redundant servers.
Has been around for a while and is a Macromedia Alliance Partner but I cant find any feedback on them anywhere.

I just built a low end server using a 4u chassis I had at home. Before bringing it to the colo facility, I was wondering if I would be better to put the hardware in a 2u chassis instead to save money on the long run.
I am considering the 2u SC826 SuperMicro chassis. I am used to buy my parts from the local shop. I can fix my current 4u server since it does not contain 'proprietary' parts such as backplanes that are built for a specific server.
I could save about 55$ per month by colocating a 2u instead of a 4u server. The chassis is about 700-800$.
I was wondering how easy it is to replace a proprietary part such as a backplane if my server breaks in 3 to 4 years? Will I be left with an unusable chassis if I cannot find the part? Is it worth it to have a 2u chassis vs 4u when I can fit any standard component in the 4u while I need more expensive and hard to find parts for the 2u? How many years can I expect to be able to find replacement parts for proprietary hardware such as backplanes in such a 2u chassis?

I recently signed up with cartikahosting.com only to find out they do not support SQL server 2005 when I tried to install my application.
Their features and price are excellent so I would like to stay with cartika if possible, is there a way to convert my database to 2000? Or backup the database using sql server scripts?

Most people probably run Linux on their media servers, but since I don't know much about Linux and the media server we have is unmanaged, I was wondering how you guys feel about running Windows Server 2003 Std on a media server instead of Linux. We'll only be using the server to host Flash video files (.flv) and we'll be serving those vids on websites hosted on other servers, resulting in approx. 50,000-100,000 media views per day (filesizes range from approx. 5MB to 10MB). We don't want to run Windows Media Services, just a Web server (IIS6) and have the Flash video players on the external websites take care of the streaming/downloading part.

Here you can see the problem and I am unsure how to fix it.
I am using a phproxy script on this domain
www.youtubetvshow.com
When you browse through this site, and look at youtube.com and try and watch a video, it does not allow you to view the flash.
I know this script works as I was using it on my past server.
My server is running on CentOS, with WHM
Does anyone know how to fix this on my server so people can view flash through my proxy site?

how to optimize a server for playing flash videos?
Here is our website: operationsports.com
In the right menu you'll notice an embedded flash video player.
Often, we receive complaints that our videos are buffering slowly at the beginning causing the movie to stop/pause for a few seconds. After this pause the remainder of the video buffers lightening quick.
I'd like to remove the pause if possible.
The server is a dual processor linux based server dedicated entirely to our video files.
It has plenty of power.

I have a company that wants to stream some live events via Windows Media Encoder/Windows Media Player. I believe the best route is to use a WMS, stream to the WMS, then the CDN would pull from there for events. Can someone help me explain a Windows Media Server versus a web server? Can you host web sites on a WMS? Is WMS just an extension to a regular Windows 2003 server?

my Hosting service (Hostway) offered Windows Media Server at the time. I wanted visitors to have the ability to quickly stream .wma's, so I went for the cost.
now...I'm unemployed; & money is real tight...so, I was thinking of dropping Hostway...going over to GoDaddy; & switching my means of musical delivery to .mp3's.
So:
1) How much slower is mp3 streaming from a conventional server than .wma from a dedicated server?
2) Is there a way to speed it (mp3) up (save decreasing file size)?
3) Will .wma's stream without the dedicated server; & if so...how is that implemented?
I really need to save money in this economy...but I don't want my listeners to suffer. Is that possible?

they are about 400kb/s and streaming to about 100 people at once.
storage space is about 80gb and bandwidth of 2000gb/month
server must be fully managed and the files are archived, I do NOT need live streaming

I need to build a video server that supports remote inbound live streams (multiple sources) and multiple outbound streams. I'm interested in hearing feedback or suggestions on Real Media Server, Microsoft Media Server, or other alternatives. Please share your thoughts on any of these. I would prefer Linux hosting and would prefer Windows Media formats. I would love to hear what some of you have had successes with.

I currently use a Dedicated Server:
Quad Core, 8GB Ram, 3TB HDD
as a Media server which streams video clips etc... on my websites.
But Im moving my sites to a UK colo,
I have been advised that its better to have Multiple Web Servers connected to a NAS / Storage Server?
As I dont want to have multiple servers doing seperate jobs I want 1 cluster e.g. Web Servers + Load Balancers + Storage + SQL
I Purchased a HP StorageWorks NAS 1200s 1TB
LINK: [url]
Will this do the job? Or should I use this as backup storage and get something else?

how's media temple these days?
In particular the grid service.
Does their service stay up? How often is it down? I heard a lot of horror stories back in the day, and went with another provider.
Sadly, my current provider has had a string of downtime each day and I'm looking to switch.
Before I go with another provider, i want to make sure that MT's grid service is good.
And how it would compare with their dedicated virtual service.
Especially when you consider their dedicated virtual service compared to the gs with a mysql container.

I have Plesk 11.5 (service provider mode) on a Windows 2008 server IIS7.Most of my sites are developed in .asp and therefore i use a custom 500-100.asp error page that check s the IP of the visitor then displays either a friendly error, or if its my IP a full error of what has happened (it also emails me the error). This allows me to debug pages easily whilst developing and to keep an eye on anyone trying SQL Injection hacks on my sites (as the error and email also have session variables and IP address).I dont have root access to the server as it is a Webfusion dedicated server.I have following the Plesk documentation -
1) Switch on custom errors for the subscription
2) Look in virtual directories and navigate to error documents
3) Find the error in question (500:100) and change it to point at either a file or URL
FILE - I had the data centre add in the 500-100.asp error page in to the virtual template so that my page is available in the list of virtual files - this didn't work but that maybe because its not a static page??
URL - when i add the path it says its incorrect, if i add a fully qualified address, it accepts it but it doesn't work.give me a specific example of the URL that can be entered relative to the root as the format in the documentation isn't accepted. The last step is to restart IIS which is also an issue as i cant seem to do this from the Plesk panel..It is as if it isn't catching the 500:100 error, and only catching the general 500 error??

I am currently using a shared hosting but due to increasing traffic and server load my existing host is not able to provide reliable services and I am planning to upgrade my hosting service.
While I was searching for Dedicated Servers, I learnt about Virtual Dedicated Servers but I am not very sure about their reliability? Are Virtual Dedicated Servers useful? My website current serves over 2500-3000 visitors a day resulting in 30,000 pageviews and I am expecting the traffic to grow by atleast 2 folds in the next few months as I start some PPC campaigns and Email Marketing for my website. Can a Virtual Dedicated Server cater such needs assuming my website to be more of less dynamic website written in php?
