Rsync Some Files From Windows To A Linux Server
At work, we have a windows 2003 server. We have a set of files that get modified from day to day. Since they know I own a dedicated server (Linux) they ask me if it would be possible to have an offsite backup on my server of the set of files on the windows 2003 server. Also, I dont want to have the whole files set to be uploaded everyday. I am aware of rsync on *nix system, but do you have any suggestions on how to proceed with a windows 2003 server to a unix server?

Samba Server :: Can Linux And Windows Exist On The Same Server?
I have a linux server for a video sharring site The video encoder that I prefer to use will only work in a windows enviorment The windows server would pass off the converted video to the Linux server. Will a Samba server for Linux allow a Linux machine to connect and share files with a Windows machine work for this application. Although it's probably a dumb question but can Linux and Windows exist on the same server?

Windows Crash When Saving Files To Linux Share
We have a Windows 2003 Enterprise server with 6GB of RAM and about 20 terminal services users logging in. These users then launch a program called Accuthin Thin Client giving them access to a piece of software called Southware that runs on a Centos 5 Linux server on the same network. Problem seems to be that saving files to the network share causes windows to blue screen and crash. Has anyone ever heard of this before? I know it is a shot in the dark but we have been investigating this issue for 4 months, have replaced the Windows server 5 times, increased RAM to 8 GB and installed Enterprise edition clean but the issue follow no matter what we do.

Replace Linux With Windows Server Via Vkvm
I'm trying to replace my Linux OS with Windows Server 2003, which I already have a license. I'm talking about OVH Kimsufi XL. Following support's instructions, I booted my dedicated with netboot, specific with vkvm option. Then I specified an ftp location, (where there is my "totally working" .iso), and I started the virtual session. After some mins, a java windows appears, and starts the vnc session. After usual linux loading, it stops on this : Code: VFS: Cannot open root device "801" or unknown-block(8,1) Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions: 0300 244198584 hda driver: ide-gd 0301 5245191 hda1 0302 238428687 hda2 0303 522112 hda3 Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,1) And, besides I cant write a letter!

Windows Server Online Backup Provider
Due to some recent negative experiences, one of my customers had to cancel their account with IBackup.com's Pro services. It had provided exceptional reliability and did Windows backup of the System State, Exchange Server, SQL, and provided file versions going 30 back. But I couldn't get anywhere with technical support for 2 weeks on why it would freeze during the backups. The final straw came when I installed it to a brand new server and had the same issues. I'm looking for a suggestion on a provider that does at least file-level backups and Exchange backups. I've looked around online, read reviews, but it doesn't look like the providers do Exchange backup. I don't need mailbox-level backup, just brick-level for disaster recovery. File versions going back (in case a user makes a mistake and wants to restore an old copy) would be nice, but not required.

Dedicated Server - Run Windows & Linux
Can I run both Windows & Linux on a dedicated server? I currently have a website hosted on a shared hosting Linux web server (uses PHP, MySQL). I want to use RED5, which seems a bit tricky to set up. Why Windows? I would feel more comfortable installing RED5 on a windows server (I think it'd be easier for me, no experience with Linux command line etc.). Why Linux? I'd prefer to keep the existing PHP/MySQL website on Linux because I have Apache specific settings.

Server Dies :: Loaded It With Windows 2003 And Linux
I have a server that keeps dying on my mysteriously. I've loaded it with Windows 2003 and Linux. Both crash about once every other day. So I'm guessing this isn't a software issue, but a hardware one. When it crashes the screen turns blank. Only a hardware reboot will work. The power doesn't go off though. Anybody here experience something like this before? I'm guessing it's one of the following:Power supply CPU Motherboard However I'm thinking it's probably not the power supply as the server is relatively idle. I did stress test the server and it didn't crash then. The thing is, there are no event logs from the BIOS or anything.

How To Move 60GB Data From Windows Server To Linux
After long time consideration, selected linux eventually from singlehop, good company, good service. Now we got big problem. Since our forum has 60GB data, I have no idea how to move files over. If it was another windows server, I would just install a flashget (or similar download software) and put all HTTP links into it and just go to bed. The data has been ZIPed into dozens of files, 1-3 GB each. HTTP link are ready for downloading, like www.abc.com/files01.zip www.abc.com/files02.zip ........ www.abc.com/files50.zip I was wondering what's the best way to move data. Can we install a programme and put those links into it and download into my server? Thank you for your suggestion. I tried wget, seems not working, speed drops to 0 after 10 secs, don't know what reason.

Windows Server Hacked And Files Transferred Using Torrent Clients
I have noticed in a few Windows server tha the server gets hacked and there are tons of files which are mostly DVD rips and games being transferred away which results in huge amount of data transferred and bandwidth consumption increasing to as far as 29 Mbps. On further investigation, I find that all the files get stored in either the Recycler directory or the System Volume Information directories in any of the drives. Now these two directories are protected operating system files. Even if there is a windows firewall installed, there is no difference. I have even noticed that in some servers there is an automatic exception rule added in the windows firewall enabling the torrent client to communicate outside the server. This seems to be a common problem with Windows 2003 server and seems to be some backdoor of Windows allowing hackers to use the server for seeding. Has anybody come across such a problem or know the solution? Kindly help me with this.

It must be able to do auto-rsync to another server that is located in another data center. I do note that alot of the software out there can do the backup to local drives, or server located within the network but not external network. If anyone know of any software that is capable of doing the following, do post here.

How Do I Host Windows 2008 Server As A Guest OS On My Linux Dedi
How do I run a virtual instance of Windows server 2008 on my Linux dedi? Do I need to partition the server and create a VPS for this or can I run it on something like VMware? (Please look at my other thread here [url]t=857377 to learn more about my server, its resources and current config.) Why would I want to do this? Because my primary desktop OS is still Vista Ultimate 64 and I've invested a lot in Windows-based software and hardware--too much to make a total switch to Linux. But, I don't want to invest more than I have to in order to run a Windows server that allows my business partner to access documents remotely or for us to share various files securely and privately and still serve my mostly Windows-based clients and colleagues. I'm one of, well, two people I know who even use Linux (at least at the OS level and know it). Since my research shows I **can** do this on Centos 5, the responses that would be most useful to me would be those that focus on how I can do this successfully (even if it seems complicate; I can figure it out with help and/or direction) and what to consider or avoid when creating this virtual guest OS on my Linux dedi.

Transfer Large Many Files From Server To Server
In reference to my previous post, i want to tranfer accross 7GB of data, approximatly 80,000 files i believe it is (due to a gallery script). It's currently on another host (on a webhosting account) which uses their own control panel which has no options but to manage databases, the only way i can see to do this is via FTP but it'll take me days. I've tried using compressing and backup scripts, but the damn execution time on the hosts server is too low to allow the files to be zipped. Are there any ways? Can i login to my VPS via SSH and anyhow pull off the files from the other hosts server?

Using Domain Name Server (DNS) And A Backup Server
I currently have two VPS servers, each with 2 DNS names running on them as follows: dns1.mydomain.com (on Server A) dns2.mydomain.com (on Server A) dns3.mydomain.com (on Server B) dns4.mydomain.com (on Server B) I have websites running on each server and I would like to have something set-up so that when one server goes down, the other server displays a nice page saying the website is unavailable currently and will be back shortly - you know, something nicer then the normal "Server Not Found" default messages. What is the best way to do this? If I have CLIENTDOMAIN.COM and put them on Server A and they use all 4 DNS server names, will the top two DNS names always be used by people finding the website, and the bottom two choices only be used if the top two can't be found? I believe I have to create an account on Server B for them as well, just only placing the temporary page within the account, rather then a whole copy of their website. Correct?

New Server Without OS (Remote FTP Backup Server)
I just purchased a new server with 4 hotswap HDD of 250GB each and reload with new CentOS 5 without any host control panel. The purpose is to backup all my other Cpanel servers data remotely. All my Cpanel servers are fully managed servers. This is the first time i'm going to do all things by myself, so I'm really a newbie. Please don't advise me to hire a server admin because I end up learning nothing I need to learn.. 1. My first step now is to secure & harden the server. - Can anyone mind to share with me valueable knowledge of basic server security & hardening? I was also thinking to use sudo root password which my serveradmin actually did but I don't know how. But su - access level would be OK too. - I also need to install firewall and close all kind of port and block all SSH connection from all kind of IP except my server & my own IP address only. Can anyone provide me a guide? 2. Secondly what I need is to install FTPd and create user for each hard drive with 2 directory inside. /sda/server1/ /sda/server2/ /sdb/server3/ /sdb/server4/ /sdc/server5/ (reserved for future server) /sdc/server6/ (reserved for future server) /sdd/server7/ (reserved for future server) /sdd/server8/ (reserved for future server) Does anyone knows where to find documentation how do install ftpd and how to setup user pointed to the specific directory.

Media Server Running Windows Server 2003 Std: Yes Or No
Most people probably run Linux on their media servers, but since I don't know much about Linux and the media server we have is unmanaged, I was wondering how you guys feel about running Windows Server 2003 Std on a media server instead of Linux. We'll only be using the server to host Flash video files (.flv) and we'll be serving those vids on websites hosted on other servers, resulting in approx. 50,000-100,000 media views per day (filesizes range from approx. 5MB to 10MB). We don't want to run Windows Media Services, just a Web server (IIS6) and have the Flash video players on the external websites take care of the streaming/downloading part.

Windows Media Server & Web Server
I have a company that wants to stream some live events via Windows Media Encoder/Windows Media Player. I believe the best route is to use a WMS, stream to the WMS, then the CDN would pull from there for events. Can someone help me explain a Windows Media Server versus a web server? Can you host web sites on a WMS? Is WMS just an extension to a regular Windows 2003 server?
