Worth Upgrading To Quadcore Server (win2003 Server)?
Dec 8, 2008
Site is currently running on a single code single cpu p4 server. Am thinking of upgrading to a quad core Xeon server.
My site is pretty dynamic with lots of hits to php / mysql, and has trouble keeping up with the requests sometimes. Would a quadcore Xeon significantly help?
Server Software:
Windows 2003 Server
php 5.2.6
apache 2
mysql 4.1
Current Setup:
P4 2.8 single core/cpu.
Proposed setup
Xeon 3210 quadcore
I guess my confusion lies in the following:
1. Can win2003 server make use of the quadcores?
2. Does php / apache / mysql make use of the quadcores?
3. Will i see a significant increase in the amount of pages i can serve?

How do I lock this down? How can I block these guys from trying to login? The IPS are coming from all over the world though. I did whois for a few, and they range from Poland, Russia, to China.

I don't have any SMTP server
Its a dedicated unmanaged server that has windows 2003 and apache running. I heard you need IIS to enable SMTP on a Windows machine but I don't want to run IIS because I feel Apache is better.

I have a collocated server which I'd like to do some upgrades to. I'm having it shipped back to me so that I can do the upgrades myself. However, since I use this as my primary email server, I need help setting something up so I have no email downtime.
I have a cheap shared hosting account with DreamHost so one idea I have is to point the domain to their servers and handle things through there for a bit. This seems like the "brute force" way to do it though since I have to wait for DNS propagation and what not. Another idea was to use a service like DynDNS' MailHop BackupMX which does storage and forwarding. However, this service is kind of expensive ($30) considering I'm only going to use it a week or so.

I have a Win2003 dedicated server (with The Planet) that i use to host a large IPB forum site.
I got it about 3yrs ago and as I was a complete newbie to server management I got Plesk CP installed so that it would take care of all the SQL, PHP and mail installation and setup in one easy go.
I've since found Plesk for Windows to be a complete waste of space.. but it's still on there and has never been upgraded. I don't actually use it as a CP.
Similarly PHP and mySQL have never been upgraded.
Now I've got to the stage where, to upgrade the IPB forum software, I need to upgrade PHP and mySQL.. but looking at the installation, they seem to be embedded in the Plesk installation. They're inside the SWSoft/Plesk/ folders and none of the ini or config files appear to be in the places you'd expect them to be.
My question -
Would these upgrades be simple?? A case of just running an update package?? Or is the fact that PHP/mySQL are embedded in Plesk mean that it'll all mess up?
I'm worried that a failed upgrade will knacker the forum, which is why I've delayed for so long.

What is the point of a high end quadcore cpu with 7200 rpm sata drives ?
i see tons of offers with really nice cpu's with either a single sata drive or 2 drives on crappy fake raid.
I have old dual single core xeon servers under 50% cpu usage that end up hitting the disk IO wall before they ever get to over 60% cpu usage.
Either me and my customers dont user software thats crap and eats up cpu for no reason or im missing something.

According to microsoft, Only SQL Express 2005 can be installed on windows 2003 web edition. N other sql server editions allowed. Sure, ok. So I downloaded express (SQLEXPR_ADV.EXE) and go to install. Install always stops (shuts down) with no warning ...
smooth Microsoft, really smooth.

I am no pro and not really sure what I am doing with setting up the server for SMTP. I have installed SMTP Virtual Server but do not know what settings I need or what else I need to setup to get it to work.
I have always used hosted space before where it is all setup for me.

* I have a Windows 2003 Professional Edition server with 8GB installed.
* /PAE is enabled to use more than 4GB memory
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Enterprise" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptOut /PAE
* I can see 8GB installed in the Task Manager
* This server is not for hosting but for running some cpu intensive applications. (I am not into webhosting industry)
But the maximum I ever seen been used is 4.66GB, and after that I run often into "Memory allocation failed" "Out of memory exception" application error.
How to use the full 8gb? Or is my box configured to use 8gb? Or is it dependent on application. Do I need a memory manager third-party software?

Im running a windows 2003 web edition server with apache 2.2.4 installed and a ported module; mod_dosEvasive, my server is vurnable for some sort of single machine dos attack. Not only my own server is vurnable but basically ANY apache 2.2.4 win32 server, even without additional modules (lik php) installed ( i checked by installing apache2 on 4 machines, all vurnable)
The tool used to attack apache is described here:
[url]
When attacked by the specific syn flood attack apache2 becomes useless and doesnt send any responses out anymore. When the attacker stops sending this flood Apache starts responding again.
how to secure a windows apache server against such an attack?

Rackspace worth the $$?
The name, service and reputation is excellent but their prices seem to be much higher than similar services at other reputable providers.
The client looking at rackspace MUST have a reliable server, backups and security. These are not optional.
Is rackspace worth the extra dollars? Buying peace of mind or buying the name?

So I run a small music forum site. We used to have the ability for our users to download music track sets. We had over 100 files that are generally around 80MB and the users could add more so our space requirements would increase over time.
We initially set this up with dreamhost.com (unlimited bandwidth/space) but they eventually asked us to stop using the space as a data repository and wanted to charge $1 per GB transferred (which at that time was about $100-120/month).
The Problem:
This is something our users want and would probably pay for. I'm sort of asking for advice on how to approach this problem. Need to figure out how we could set this up and what to charge the users for downloading the music files (price per file, monthly plans, etc). Considering we want to keep it cheap enough that users will pay and the hosting costs would probably rise with the demand and exposure of the program. What sort of hosts should I be looking for?

I'm currently designing a website for a friend of mine for her new photography business.
And she does not know anything about the web, basically I am setting her up with hosting, domain, everything.... I've done this for about 3 people so far.
My question is, Is it worth it for me to buy a small reseller hosting plan, and have her pay me about $5-7 /mo, and since I will be handling everything, I get the support from my host and have her basically pay for my reseller hosting which I may end up with more clients from more web design? or just stick with the traditional recommending her to a company... Is there such thing as me making a few bucks from giving someone else business?

RAM price is so low nowadays that one could buy 8 GB of cheap ram for 300$ (4x2GB) to build a server. I have a server with 2x1GB cheap ram that has been running for 18 months without any issue.
My bet is that ECC ram is not worth it when you can buy normal ram for such low prices.
How many of you would run a server with 8GB of cheap ram?

I am planning on doing some media streaming (youtube style)
I am debating whether to colo my dual opteron (1u) - I am looking for 100mpbs port unmetered with some quality mixed bandwidth. How much will that run me for? does it make more sense to rent a dedicated server?
How about all those extras I hear about, like managed switches and power consumption..is that big issue?
Could somebody give me a quick quote as to how much colocating a 1u rack with 100mpbs premium b/w will cost? and then how much going the dedicated server route would compare
note: I need something that will get good speeds to asia. I anticipate 15 percent of visitors to be from Asia.

As I've mentioned in other threads, I work in the hosting industry at the support end of things. I can't go more than 10 minutes into my shift each day without seeing a ticket where someone is complaining about or contesting the "99% uptime guarantee". One day a couple weeks ago, I had someone complaining about an Alertra report with 98.7% uptime, and how it was unsatisfactory for their site to be down for 10 minutes every month. What's more, it was just a stupid World of Warcraft forum that probably saw 5 visitors per day.
My co-workers and I have been debating this, though. What worth is there in 99% uptime? Is it something that can be achieved? If so, would people pay more for it? Would it be able to be marketed to the shared hosting community? Would people be willing to pay more for 100% uptime? Would the same answers apply?
