How To Deal With Scammers/fraudulent Websites

Mar 7, 2007

Something happened to me lately that forced me to think about this (please note, I am not a host): I noticed an unauthorized charge to my credit card by a shady online company that I probably should have never done business with in the first place.

I did a whois, and got their host information, IP, etc. And I was wondering what the procedure normally is for informing hosting companies about fraudulent clients.

Furthermore, what steps do hosts take to insure that frauds do not scam others as well. If I submit enough evidence to them, can they take any action?

VpsLink Fraudulent

Jun 19, 2008

i like to start is to know why this company treated its customers the worst treatment

engaged the services of this company in the month of march 2008

The workers have started well treated but the support was very slow in responding to the tickets, I was always solve their problems themselves

In the recent period've Arrest 5 server others have, and I pay a monthly $ 500, but this is not the problem, the problem was me that he was working on one of Saba servers, you've done with them, but closed all servers

Asked them to open servers and already opened and you have to close any dispatch from within the server

Two days later stopped both server and when you ask them again grocery SPIKE

The surprised them that I locked all means of transmission from the server

Then a senior, said, we Ntasef history and an old letter

Has been re-booting again Servers

Nicola want to Pak in August of servers you've licked

Director said after day 20 of this month

And then request a copy of my visa by paying

And sent them to the ticket by photo

And then close down its servers for the third time

He said after the access to your file Alaspam

Director does not allow you operate the service

-------------------------------------------

When you ask them retroactive, which paid me money, Give me a backup

The answer is rejected?

HostNine.COM - Fraudulent And NOT Trustworthy

Apr 14, 2008

I'd just like to tell you about my experience with HostNine.com from a web development point of view.

I have recently coded their new website from PSD to HTML files, for the agreed fee of £177. 50% has been paid upfront, and a further 50% paid upon completion.

The work was completed 6 days ago, and since this I have been in contact with the company on a daily basis. I have been ignored and shunned away. I have been blocked from viewing their website (prooven), blocked from their AIM accounts (proven) and their online and telephone supports have been highly dismissive.

Only today, when I put pressure on the Operations Manager (whom I was dealing with - Ben Gabler), by ringing him directly, did I get a proper email response:

Quote:

At this point we are not satisfied with your work and have no need for the layout. We have had several professional coders look at the code and have said it's not professional at all. I'm sorry things did not work out and we wish you the best.

I'd like to point out two things - my code is of the utmost excellence as many of you will know. I'm awaiting to hear what his professional coders have to say. Also, a deadline was never set in any of the E-Mail correspondance or MSN correspondance, all of which I have logs for. I completed the work in 3 days - timely enough one should think.

This company is rude, obnoxious and does not operate in a professional manner. Their telephone support answer the phone as "Hey, whats up?" and end the conversations with "Alright Jonny, see ya.." when I introduced myself as Jonathan Nathanson. Overall, I wouldn't reccomend them to anyone, and I am currently seeking guidance as to what I can do from here.

BEWARE Of This FRAUDULENT HOST - Do Not Sign UP

Jan 7, 2007

On 3rd of Jan 2007, a person by the name <name removed>has made a fraudulent purchase for a hosting site I developed and designed.

The whole site can be viewed at [url]

I developed and designed the site. I'm writing everyone a message here to warn everyone NOT to sign up their hosting packages when they see the above stolen site. The site is sold only exclusively so only the fraudulent buyer owns a copy of it. And I will not sell this site to anyone again. I can't tolerate cheat and will seek legal advice to file a case against Paypal and this fraudulent buyer.

This briefly what happened..

A payment is made by this fraudulent buyer on 3rd of Jan 2007. I checked the payment mode made is instant and not by credit card. He proceed to contact me at MSN after the payment is made. We chat on MSN and I prepared the files for him to review online and zipped up a copy for him to download from my server. Everything goes on smoothly until I received an email notification from Paypal stating the fund is unauthorized and my account is freezed.

This is the very first time I encountered this despite I've been providing online services and received payments by Paypal for years. I was fluttered and tried to contact the fraudulent buyer and I assumed it could be a misunderstanding. The buyer did not respond to my MSN message.

Within mins after I MSN him for clarification, I received an email from the said Paypal account owner stating he doesn't authorized the transaction and demand a full refund else he will commence legal actions. It is only to my awareness that this could be a fraudulent case. I MSN the fraud buyer and told him I have logged his IP which I really did. He quickly responded stating he doesn't know what happened.

While MSN with the fraud buyer, I simultaneously replied the email to the said PP account owner for verification and I requested the PP owner to sign in to MSN for verification. The PP account owner was suddenly not responsive and I carry on with the MSN conversation with the fraudulent buyer alone. The conversation turns ugly which he insisted this is an issue with PP and because I use PP, I am responsible for this to happen.

He last sentence in the conversation ends with " learn a few lessions your ****ing american, lovely 9/11, I partyed that day oh what fun" and that said PP account owner signed in shortly after. And instead of having the conversation with the fraudulent buyer and I together, he opened a new window and at that moment, the buyer disappeard offline. Yes, I do SUSPECT both identities belong to 1 person but I will not revealed much details on this part at this moment of time because I do not want the fraudulent buyer to get prepared to cover his ***.

I am very disgusted and disappointed by the way Paypal has handled this.

After receiving Paypal notification of unauthorized fund, the email request me to sign in to the resolution center to resolve it. HOWEVER, when I clicked the resolved button, there isn't any appropriate option for me to state my case as my item is not shipped, it is being downloaded. And when I click on "open a dispute", the options are meant solely for BUYERS only. Puzzled for a while and not knowing what to do, I use the option for OTHER and typed in a few lines telling me that I have logged all correspondences and the IP address which I will forward to them immediately when they requested it.

And before I get relieved from the dismay and I spent the entire day worrying and hoping for their call or email, Paypal closed the case within 36hours the dispute is opened! I was informed by a few short sentence stating the unauthorized access is valid and the case is closed. I, the seller, who have lost both items and money are not being asked for verification are shocked of how can this be justified? And I'm also liable for the transaction fee incurred!! This is ridiculous!

I have tried to contact Paypal after the case is closed. I tried to call PP but all I received is auto helpline which I couldn't find the appropriate group and I tried to go to the Help center and couldn't find the appropriate option to send my concern. The whole help center is designed to help Buyers to complain against Sellers and for PP to increase their users base. But I still send it under the option of Seller Protection Policy. I have also tried to email Paypal numerous times asking for verification on what are the steps they have taken to justify the case is closed? How do they proof that the access is unauthorized and how do they proof that the two identities are of two individuals and not in cahoots?

I was utterly angry with this and I can truly understand why that fraudulent buyer is laughing at me choosing Paypal as the payment gateway. The fraudulent buyer is obviously taking advantage of Paypal's inability, reluctance and lack of attention to protect their sellers from fraudulent acts.

The most hilarious part is, yesterday, I received a bounced mail from the email address I sent to Paypal. And today, I received an email from Paypal today telling me they have noted the transaction detail and THAT is a reply of mine which I sent within 5 mins on the very FIRST day I received the unauthorized fund notice. That means they closed the case even without even knowing what happened. WTF!!

And please all, do not allow this fraudulent buyer to get away easily. I DID NOT sell any copy of this site to anyone and only to that fraudulent buyer who cheated it. So, there shouldn't be anyone owning it except that fraudulent buyer. Do not let any innocents to fall into his trap again! He is setting up a hosting business and I am sure he will read this post here.

I've seek legal advice and I'm filing a suit against Paypal and the fraudulent buyer with all the proofs I have collected and documented. It is very obvious and clear that Paypal has encouraged fraudulent attempts by their lack of commitment and dedication to their users. Being rich and influential doesn't not give them the rights to led us by the nose.

I'm giving a chronological view of the whole incident and I'll follow up with more details. I will only do so after the case is filed and the hearing is done. And the identity of the Paypal account owner will be revealed after the filing is made.

If you are that fraudulent buyer reading this, I've given you chances to admit it and paid for it but you disregard it. I will honour my word and make sure everyone gets what they deserved. This is my hardwork which I spent time and effort doing it and you take it away within mins without guilt, I've told you it is going to cost you 100 times more when you cheat. Be very prepared for it.

Anyone knows if crucial.com.au is really Crucial Paradigm? I placed an order on this website for a VPS for a customer of mine on 19th, paid the invoice on the same day using PayPal, but my order was never setup. 2 days ago I submitted a Support ticket but they still don't answer it. It's now over 1 week since I ordered. Just a warning to anyone considering this company.

Scammers - Prolimehost.com

May 15, 2008

Anyone knows about this company? I have taken hosting from them yesterday everything was fine. When i woke up today the server was unreachable. Then i waited for 6hours waiting to upload my 1000$ project custom script made for my site. Its unconnectable still.

Then i got a funny email from prolimehost ceo(kid)

'Hello
Hope you are fine there
we apologize for our site down issue
as you have heard that there is terrorist attack in India
and we are also affected by it,that is the reason why our site is down and all our service are too down
we will be back in next 48 houre
we hope that you will cooperate with us In This bad time
Regards
Rounak jain
Ceo-prolimehost.com"

WTH terrorists taking down servers? (He himself looks a terrorist to me)

He tries to act like a ceo in real he looks like a jerk scamming peoples money on the net. I lost my precious 2 days due to this jerk.

From his name he looks like an Indian illiterate scammed my 3$ eventhough its less amount i was about to pay him 1 year hosting. Beware of this scammer never go for such lame hosts. Thank god i dint have any data loss.

They say they have 24/7 people staffed, where were those kiddies during the server down?, I'd just say STAY AWAY from these kids.
although, if you'd like to loose your data you may happily order your account from them. Good Luck

I have reported them to various anti-fraud companies and i hope they wont come back.

EASYRACKS.NL - SCAMMERS 266 Euro Lost - Paul Scammer

Nov 22, 2007

I am writting this becasue i am tired of playing games with this company called E-Dentify Internet, aka EASYRACKS.NL and they are refusing to issue me a full refund

I paid for 3 servers appox 1 month ago
Intel Pentium 4 3,2Ghz/1GB DDRRAM/160GB 7200RPM HDD
Intel Pentium 4 3,2Ghz/2GB DDRRAM/160GB 7200RPM HDD
Intel Core2Duo E6750 2,67Ghz/4GB DDR2RAM/320GB 7200RPM HDD

After i paid i sent an email straight to them to confirm my payment and email me back and tell me the eta on the server setup. I waited around 4 days, i sent them another email stating if i didnt hear anything back i might have to open a dispute with paypal. I finally got a reply, this is what it said

'Money recieved, you can see in your paypal.
Core2Duo and 1 P4 machine will be done tomorrow."

Waited the next day, still nothing, so i sent another email,
Finally after 8 days of waiting i got 1 server, but guess what? its the wrong server. I got Core2Duo 6600, 2.40GHz/ 3.5gig ram when i paid for Core2Duo E6750 2,67Ghz/4GB. Now if i walked into a store and paid for something i expect exactly what was advertised and stated

I emailed these guys back to ask why this has happened, and no reply what so ever so i figured id call. I called this guy named "Paul", i talked to him for about 10 minutes explaining what i got and i did not get what i paid for and these were his exact words " thats ******** ". Now i dont run a company but i do know that their should be some respect between the buyer and seller. I then told him, i have been waiting around 2 weeks for a server and i just want a refund.

He said that a refund cannot be made as we already delivered the servers. I told him i received a server which was not what i paid for, and i still have not received the other 2 servers. He then said ok we will give you a refund but we have to minus out the price for the server info we sent you. I stated my claim professionally and asked that they refund me via paypal and issue me a full refund of 266 EURO and he stated that cannot be done and the refund amount would be less then 266 EURO. After 10 minutes of telling him he said ok but still was hesitant to talk about the refund.

After i hung up i emailed them, and i got a response saying forward me your bank details. I asked why? he said thats the only way they refund. I really do not understand why they would want to do it via bank as i live in another country. Anyway i sent him my bank details

It has now been over 17 days since he confirmed that my refund would be sent

I have now filed a dispute with paypal and i explained everything in my claim, Paul did reply as i am guessing they dont like disputes and this is what he said

" Hello,Servers we're delivered but rejected by the customer. All in
agreement with out TOC.Refund will not be issued."

Is this guy some kind of joke? I did not reject the servers, if he had delivered what was paid for, i would have happily waited

Where is my refund Paul? This is absolutely shocking the way i have been treated and your lies are extremely bad

I did not pay 266EURO to you for nothing. I do not want your services anymore and i highly recommend everyone stay away from this company. They will take your money and not respond to your emails. I have to send 5 emails just to get their attention to respond to me

again i repeat do not deal with www.easyracks.nl or E-Dentify, complete scammers and liars.

Im glad they have the dispute system in paypal, i am guessing i will get my money back after nearly 1.5 months of waiting around.

If you guys dont beleive me just do a search here for easyracks.nl their is a post about paul scamming another dude on this forum. These guys need to be stopped. I can also get my server admin to confirm all

I have an adult video site so all i need is bandwidth.

I appreciate your feedback on current prices and what i paid there. $425 for unmetered 100 mbps dedicated + cpanel is okay? paying a lot more? After all 10tb is a reseller, so should i go to another reseller that charge less?

How Do You Deal With Too Much Bot Traffic

Oct 28, 2008

Recently I noticed the load on one of my servers way beyound what I would expect it to be. I run multi processor servers and even during a backup the load is only around 1.5.

But lately I noticed peak loads that high under normal web traffic.

I know 1.5 is low on an multi processor server, but I am hoping to add much more to those machines and with sustained load that high it leaves no room for expansion. The servers are not cheap, so adding another server to the cluster can only be done if I make money from the last one I added.

I checked the traffic levels and they were very high. After further review I had some bots hitting sites at over 1200 pages a minute. Multiply that by a few hundred bots and clearly I could have a load issue. The potential is there to bring any server to its knees when delivering those volumes.

I created programing to watch connections and block the abusive bots. While logging I became aware of over 600 bots crawling my servers. Many bots from, Japan, China, Germany and so on and on, useless to my customers even if they are legit search indexes.

Another problem I see is that the bots are running from many ip addresses and hitting the same sites from multiple ips at the same time. Why would the need to do that?

Among other things I decided to validate googlebot, msn and yahoo with dns lookups so I could determine that they were actually their bots and not imposters. In 24 hours I found valid bots from the big three hitting one server from 1100 different ips.

Now we are looking at thousands of vaild bots and thousands more email harvesters and content theives.

As a host, the number of sites I can host on a server is greatly reduced by the bot traffic. My customers do not want to hear that their website was being crawled at 3,000 pages a minute and that is why they could not access it. Of course they will blame it on me.

I was able to filter the bots at a firewall level and drop connections based on reverse dns lookups and site crawl rates and my server sits around 0.05 most of the time even with hundreds of pages a minute being accessed.

I am wondering how the rest of you hosts deal with this problem. Do you leave it up to your hosting customers? Or do you have some type of filter to get rid of the bots.

When you have a few sites it is not really a problem, but as you grow it grows exponetially out of control.

The Deal On Connections

Jan 7, 2007

My site is hosted on Dreamhost and gets over 1 million hits a day. The site is highly optimized, so it can handle the load easily without slowing the server down. Most pages have a loading time of under 0.2 seconds.

However, Dreamhost is telling me now that I'm using up too many "connections" and have limited my connections to 150 every 3 seconds (or so they say). Now 503 errors are coming up left and right, and its highly annoying to me and my users. Oh, and Dreamhost has mentioned several times that I'm oh such a very good candidate to upgrade to $400/mo dedicated hosting (from $8/mo currently).

So my question is, is this connection restriction really a valid concern of Dreamhost or are they just trying to milk me for money because my site is popular?

How To Deal With Unixbench 4.1.0 WHT Compilation

Jan 21, 2007

Whenever I try out a vps or dedicated the first thing I do is run Unixbench WHT on it.

I have been trying to compile on different systems a mixture of 32bit, 64bit, Fedora, Ubuntu etc, and in many instances the compilation fails the first time around.

e.g on a 32bit Ubuntu system I had to switch to gcc-3.4, instead of 4.0.3 for compilation to succeed.

Is there any place I can try and have this issues resolved when they arise?

Unsurprisingly it always appears to compile okay on 32bit Fedora/Centos Virtuozzo systems.

Best Banwidth Deal (with Quality)

Dec 14, 2008

We've browsed/searched a lot these last years and I believe fdcservers has the best bandwidth deal, with stability and a good service.

We've been searching the last days and found some other companies (ex 10TB.com). Are there any other companies that would offer something as 'good' as fdc regarding bandwidth?

10TB says they use softlayer's DC but it seems they don't use their network (got that information on a chat with SL's sales) so in my opinion there is no benefits to be on SL's DC if we don't use their network which is really good/stable. We've found that 10tb.com is a new company and their site has 404 and incorrect contact e-mails address which made we 'quit' the signup process.. (and because it is hard to 'trust' a new company with lot of bandwidth - and errors on their website - when there are others on the market for a long time that couldn't offer it).

What do you think about 10tb.com? Other options? What about fdc? Is it worth going with them to host streaming ? We need as much bandwidth as possible, but we also need quality.

What Dedicated Server Deal Is The Best

Server 1:
Quad-Core Xeon X3220 2.4 Ghz/2x4MB (expensive)
1066FSB 2GB RAM ECC
500 GB SATA 7200 133 RPM

Server 2 (the cheapest):
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Dual Core
6 GB DDR2 RAM
2 x 750 GB SATA II

Server 3 (medium price):
Core™2Duo 2x2,0 GHz
3 GB DDR2 RAM
2x320 GB SATA

I have a website where each page is around 200KB and uses a simple MySql db. Around how many pageviews would each of the servers above manage a day? They are all 100mbit dedicated. What server is the best choice.

Deal With Outages On Shared Host

I run and maintain many websites on a shared server (ICDSoft)

While I am extremely happy with their service and support, the outages are still a problem when they happen. Especially for the e-commerce customers.

They are beginning to ask what do we do in this situation? Generally I reply, there is nothing to do but wait in this situation.

OnSmart Worst Company To Deal With

Nov 15, 2007

This company is going down hill as far as I am concerned. There are too many other options out there than to waste your time with this company. They used to be great... I have set-up 3 accounts with them and referred others there as well... I also have a web designer friend who uses them all the time is also becoming concerned. He also said that their security certificate is expired.

My problem is a large percentage of emails sent to me from various addresses are now rejected by their server and I am receiving phone calls from numerous people saying they can no longer email me. Onsmart refuses to address the issues and has been extremely rude and unhelpful. The error messages clearly say they are rejected by them.. go figure? They are not willing to help me with the problem and are at the point of ignoring me as well.

I switched hosts (did not have a choice) and I am now receiving flawless performance. Peter one of the Reps closed a chat window on me after replying with a rude comment and Sandy then came on with no greeting and took forever between replies. Personally I have done nothing wrong but unfortunately they do not feel that way. You get the feeling they sit around complaining about you when you have a problem. Here is the chat log right after being "hung up" on by Peter. Save yourself the hassle they are the most unreliable host I have ever dealt with and have the worst customer service.

Chat InformationPlease wait for a site operator to respond.
Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Sandy'
Sandy: hi (note there was a long pause here)
myname: Hi there... I was in the middle of talking to Peter and then it said chat ended?
Sandy: ok (even longer pause here)
myname: I am sure you are getting frustrated with me but I am really trying to find out why I am receiving numerous calls ect why people cannot send emails to me?
Sandy: Please hold while I check on it.. (they always say this and do nothing)
myname: thanks
Sandy: I've send email to xxxx@xxxx.com
Sandy: and its deliverd properly
Sandy: here are logs from server
Sandy: 2007-11-14 13:29:58 removed for privacy
myname: Thanks I realize that. I can send emails to myself aswell. But am not sure why all of a sudden people who regularly email me get these error messages along with new people. I know it is easy to blame them which I would love it if it was the case.
myname: Do you know why it may be happening to them?
Sandy: or our server IP address blocked in their network
Sandy: so many reasons not to get emails
myname: I know but honestly if you had an email address you have been using for almost a year and then 5+ of people you know say "hey I can no longer send you emails..." wouldn't you be concerned? I'm not trying to be difficult I really don't think this is their problem but just don't know what to do...
myname: I haven't received your email yet either...
myname: ok I just received your email... (like 5 minutes later)
Sandy: did you check xxxx@..
myname: just got it
Sandy: humm..
Sandy: ok
myname: I understand this is a weird problem I am sorry. I am sure you feel that everything is working but I honestly don't believe it is. I appreciate your time but as of now my emails don't work all the time.... can you contact me if you find anything cause clearly this isn't going anywhere...
myname: I think I may need to find another host if this persists.... see ya
Sandy: did you check through webmail
Sandy: ok
myname: I tried that
Sandy: ok
myname: They werent there either
myname: if you find out anything just let me know. thanks

near the end of the chat I was waiting minutes to receive a response... couldn't help but feel they were trying to get me to close the window.

Hosting Deal Gone Wrong. On Options.

Mar 6, 2007

I represent a small software development company out of Bellevue, WA. For the longest time we had our server (3U rack) based in Sunny Southern California. We were paying $150/m for 3mbit connection with six IPs. We use the server for work as well as hosting a gaming community. We'd host half-life 2 servers for friends and family for the longest time.

We began to go over our monthly bandwidth allocation limits late last year and had to shell out for the overage charges. Not a big deal. However, a good friend of one of my associates said he could get us free hosting up here in Seattle if we moved our machine.

I was skeptical, but he said he knew someone who was an employee at one of the major datacenters here in Seattle and that she could get us in as long as we hosted her website. We moved our box in November of 2006. It is now March 6, 2007, and we just received word that we've been had. I guess the employee at said datacenter broke some rules and as a result lost privilages to host her own private machine.

So, while she was busy leading us along, we were basically frozen as a small start-up company as our servers were offline and our ability to function without this machine online was greatly hindered.

So, today I was turned onto this website as a place to find answers to questions about hosting. Well, here's my question.

Does anyone know of anywhere in the Pacific Northwest and/or Northern California that provides affordable hosting and quality service? We're looking for rack space for our 3U server and a 3mbit connection. Ideally we'd like more bandwidth than this as 3mbit wasn't enough at our old location... however, considering the amount of loss we've taken during this disaster, we'll settle for anything. We also only need 1 IP, but more wouldn't be a bad thing.

The key word here is affordable. We are starving college kids and hosting is expensive.

We're quite desperate, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Again, we're looking for cheap/affordable hosting sollutions in the Pacific Northwest that meets the above requirements.
