Duplicate Website...good Way Of Comparing Hosts

Jun 27, 2008

I already have a web account with a shared web host. My site is growing. I want to buy a new account with a different web host but I'm afraid that the servers will be slower (the specs are better, but maybe it has more sites hosted on it or they are dishonest etc.?).

So, when I buy the new hosting account, can I simply copy and paste my site over and see which server serves the page faster? Then I should be able to decide which server to associate the domain name with...

Hosts Not Good For PHP Scripts

May 2, 2008

It has been my experience that some hosts require a lot more effort when working with PHP scripts. Problems may include such things as:

1. Non-standard session paths

2. Non-standard mod rewrite or even non-existent

3. fopen not allowed for external URLs

4. GD library or Image Magick not installed

5. PHP version old

Good Web Hosts That Allow Adult / Porn / Pornography?

Jun 14, 2009

My next website will be a sort of adult orientated social networking type site that will allow users to upload adult pics ect.

Most of the good recommended hosts such as : medialayer, Rochen, Known Host and so on don't seem to allow pornography of any kind.

Are there any as good as those that do allow this kind of thing?

Good ColdFusion, Adult, Fantastico, And Co-Location Hosts

Dec 8, 2005

I was wondering if I could get some information from those who frequent this site. I'm looking for some good hosting companies that specifically deal in some niche areas. If anyone could point me in the direction of some hosts with an affiliate program and deal in either ColdFusion, Adult, Fantastico, or Co-Location hosting, That would be awesome. The hosting company needs to be an overall good company as well, so if you've worked with a great company, or heard good things about a company that deals in the above categories, please respond to this post.

Do Any Good Hosts Provide A CPanel That Keeps Addon Domain Lists In Order

Feb 2, 2008

I find that I like using CPanel with addon domains in a new unlimited domains shared plan rather than using WHM with each name having its own CPanel in a reseller plan (which I have been used to until now at another host). The only problem is that all the addon domains are out of order - they are not even in the order in which I add them. This puts a damper on things and makes managing them much less efficient than one would expect with the addons in order.

After putting in a support ticket, I was told they can't do anything about it at all. They told me the order of the listing is the order in the "mail server apache configuration."

After posting this matter here in the Apache forum, I have been informed by an SP member that the answer I got wouldn't hold any water at all, or more accurately, consists of a whole lot of smoke. As a person who knows how easy and basic it is to sort data lists or drop-down form selector fields myself, I must admit that it's hard to believe nothing can be done in the 21st century.

I have no desire at all to go with another reseller plan, and like using CPanel instead with addons.

Does anyone know of the good and well known unlimited domain hosting providers who keep the addon domains in order within CPanel? Is there any other good option for shared hosting that doesn't involve using WHM and does offer common sense multiple domain management where everything is in order?

Trusted Web Hosts For A Design / Portfolio Website

Apr 11, 2009

I have almost finished designing my site and so I'm looking for a host. However, in looking for hosts I found that a lot of them were scams or were not to be trusted. There were lots of review websites that gave a top 10 listing, and the top 2 always used to be justhost and hostingmonster. Which I didn't really trust as Justhost gave me this silly thing when I tried to leave the page saying 'you can talk to a special agent to get a discount' and all that tosh.

So basically, I'm looking for a host that has a fair amount of space, preferably linux OS and preferably in the UK, and it must have MySQL support and be nice cheap one if possible, around £3.00 a month is fine.

Do You Have A Website With Any Of These Hosts? I Want To Share Speed Tests For Them

Sep 21, 2007

I am planning to change my shared server web host. As part of my evaluation, I want to test the speed of web hosts I'm considering switching to. I've looked but could not find any reliable data for speed. So, I want to create my own data.

Based on some specific requirements, I have chosen the following finalists: ANhosting/Midphase, Hostgator, IXWebhosting, and Websitesource. If you have a website that uses one of these hosts,

I think a good way of doing a fair, accurate speed comparison is for 2 or 3 customers of each web host to place a 20MB file on their website. I will then download the file from each customer site during a high-traffic time of day. I will then report the results here.

This forum doesn't allow urls for the file to download, I think, but I hope it is allowed to put the URL for the download into an attachment, enclosed...

I anticipate that other webhosts that are reading this will want to participate. I welcome this, so here are some key features I need: php/linux, add at least 3 dedicated IPs to one account (could be extra fee), at least 20 addon domains on one acct., catchall/default email, shared ssl.

Comparing VPS Vs Dedi Plan...

Sep 6, 2008

I am trying to make a decision on switching from my current VPS hosting to a dedicated solution. If I rent the server in the next 24 hours from Theplanet, I can get a Celeron 2.0+ with 1GB of ram and an 80GB hd for $74/month (plus $25 setup). $15/month of that is for doubling the ram to 512MB, so I could get the same without that for $59/month.

Comparisons:
VPS: 2 1.6Mhz Dual-Core AMD Opteron Processor 2210 HE's, I don't know how many people share that
Dedi: Celeron 2.0, all mine. (and yes, I know that is potentially a bit of a downgrade)

VPS: 512MB ram and 1024MB swap
Dedi: 1024MB ram (guessing I set my own swap size?)

VPS: 25GB allocated space
Dedi: 80GB hd

VPS: 1.5Mbps connection
Dedi: 10Mbps connection

VPS: CP+ control panel
Dedi: None included (could install Webmin myself, which is free, never used it before though)

VPS: Their DNS servers
Dedi: Need to use my own

So basically the parts I don't know the difference between would be the processor, the control panel, and what the performance impact on running primary and secondary DNS servers on the same box as the webserver. Anyone have any feedback on those points?

Separate question... assuming I go for it, what would be the deciding factors on OS, if the choices were CentOS 4.x, CentOS 5.x, FreeBSD 6.3, or FreeBSD 7.0?

Reliable Way Of Comparing Provider's Speed

Oct 27, 2009

What's a reliable method of comparing the network speed between two providers? They often put up a 50MB or 100MB file to download, but I'm not certain how to go about testing their bandwidth.

I can't just download the file from my home connection -- my link is probably capped at 10 Mbps. Is there an external service that I can use?

Comparing High-end Shared 2 VP 2 Low Dedicated

Jul 9, 2008

As a non-tech but looong term sufferer in the Hosting biz both as a consumer and VERY briefly a supplier ( strictly for masochists IMHO ), over the years I found it was only specific individuals - not the Hosting Company that was the key point.

Good support people are really needed more today than ever before. It is sooo complex - as follows:

We are looking at leaving our unsupported VERY small Dedicated Server after two years of frustration trying to get a secure, reliable system going without success. A mixed bag of problems: Us being non-geeks, OS problems, Server problems.

We are looking at going back to a VPS in the light of amazing claims being made for them today.

A fraction of the cost of Dedicated and yet *claims* of astounding capability. CLAIMS...

That's why I'm here today with you. I need help sorting the facts out. Can a VPS that : is "burstable" for RAM and with amazing pipe access and volume allowance and the new concept of "sorta like load balancing" sharing workload over possibly hundreds of Servers in a giant cluster" actually be real?

If this is true it would be Server heaven for me as the Provider has to do all the Geek-stuff!

Where/How To Duplicate Hard Drives

Jul 3, 2007

I am in a little bit of trouble I got a couple (5) of 750GB hdds that I need backed up to another couple (5?) of 750GB hdds so I can save the data storage on them. They are in a Linux box with a LVM setup I also have a RAID ware card on it but not using any RAID # on them. I decided after finding out what I could do with it to go to Windows 2003 on the server and installing RAID5/6 on it.

It seems that I will have to give up all my data and have everything wiped off from the hard drives this is very sad for me but I still have a chance to save the data on them. So I am thinking of copying them to another bunch of hard drives and then re-add it once the system is in place.

I was looking at this
[url]

But thats clearly too expensive as I just need to back up 5 hard drives (750GB/each) and just need to do it one time. Anyone have any suggestions to this or how should I go about doing it. It doesnt have to be right away but its good to know my options.

Is there any place where they might to do this kind of stuff they let you rent their machine for a couple of hours for a fee so you can back up your data? The server is a COLO and the hardware is mine so I have every right to take it off and back it up with no problem from the datacenter.

Making Duplicate (ns1 & Ns2) Nameservers In WHM Before Transfer

I don't want this. How can I choose?

1 Domain + 2 IPs = Duplicate Content Penalty

Nov 26, 2007

I have several websites setup as follows:

- uploaded on host 1 at dedicated IP 111.111.111.111

- and also uploaded at host 2 (backup host) at dedicated IP 222.222.222.222

The dns A-record constantly points at host 1 (IP 111.111.111.111); in case that host fails, I manually switch the dns A-record to host 2 (IP 222.222.222.222).

Being dedicated IPs, I can simply type them in my browser's address window, and I see the index page of my website.

So, in fact, my site can be accessed via 3 urls: my_site.com, 111.111.111.111 and 222.222.222.222.

The question is: will that get me into trouble with Google and other search engines that may see there a duplicate content at 3 different urls and penalize me for that? If yes, how can I avoid it?

Universal Hosts (uni-hosts) Two Week Mini Review

Apr 2, 2008

I was in the market for a new dedicated server after a couple of years with my previous provider. The previous provider did nothing wrong but they were no longer competitive when it came to CPU and memory.

I moved first to geekrack. And I left them after a week and a half as they never were able to get my rDNS records setup.

I found Universal Hosts on this forum and gave them a shot. I had asked for an operating system that they didn't offer normally (Debian 64 bit) and they said that they could do it. However, when my server was setup it was 32 bit Debian instead. They apologized and had Debian 64 bit setup less than 24 hours later.

When I asked them to get rDNS records setup it took a few hours but they were setup correctly and they worked.

Universal Hosts is also a BurstNet reseller but compared to my other attempt at using a BurstNet reseller they are fantastic. While the initial config was incorrect they worked quickly to fix it and were very professional about it.

So after two weeks - so far so good. Keep up the good work UniHosts!

Apache :: Virtual Hosts With Windows 8 Hosts File

Aug 11, 2013

I am running Apache2.2, PHP5.I have been running with virtual hosts on a Windows 7 environment fine for a couple of years successfully, but have just had to move to a Windows 8 environment. It looks like Apache and PHP have installed and are working fine, but my Virtual hosts are now not being recognised. From what I can tell, it is the Windows 8 hosts file that is having a problem, as it looks as though it is now just setup to Block websites.

If I make the host file just have the one line127.0.0.1 localhost entry, then the very first Virtual Host from my apache config file will come up, but the rest are not found. If I put the usual 127.0.0.1 mywebsite.name aliasname is appears as though my website works momentarily and then is blocked..

SEO, Duplicate Content, .htaccess And PR Blog Annihilation

Jun 20, 2009

we have a subdomain blog.ourdomain.com that we installed wordpress on to publish content for our static website. We were short of time so we set up Comment kahuna to publish articles in the spaces between our posts (bad idea we now know).

Our page rank has stayed at PR2 for over 2 years.

Now - We have moved to a cms that has a blog included and wish to start blogging on that platform (fresh new regular content).

We cannot transfer all the posts to the new platform and why would we as it is duplicate content.

Problems if we change the subdomain to the new blog we will generate about 110 pages of 404 errors as all the pages are indexed from the old blog.

if we leave the subdomain as is we can htaccess all the old urls to the front page of the new blog (we do not know the .htaccess syntaxt to do this so any ideas)
existing subdomain is apache, new system hosted at different ip on windows server and is SAAS no access to iis.

Issues -What will happen to our PR if we remove duplicate content but create the 404 errors

Should we just redirect the subdomain to the new blog and be patient?
